Utilizing Culturally Responsive Strategies To Inspire African American Female Participation In Cybersecurity, Deanna Bailey, Michel Kornegay, Ladawn Partlow, Charnee Bowens, Karen Gareis, Kevin Kornegay
Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)
The number of African American females participating in cyber fields is significantly low. Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education requires a new approach to student engagement to increase African American female participation in cybersecurity. The most common approach to engaging more African American females in STEM is to provide students access to professional images or role models active in STEM; however, more is needed. More race-centered strategies beyond role modeling are necessary to attract and retain African American females in STEM. Research studies show that integrating personal experiences and making cultural connections can help improve student participation in STEM …

On Water Arrangements In Right- And Left-Handed Dna Structures, Liliya A. Yatsunyk, S. Neidle
Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Works
DNA requires hydration to maintain its structural integrity. Crystallographic analyses have enabled patterns of water arrangements to be visualized. We survey these water motifs in this review, focusing on left- and right-handed duplex and quadruplex DNAs, together with the i-motif. Common patterns of linear spines of water organization in grooves have been identified and are widely prevalent in right-handed duplexes and quadruplexes. By contrast, a left-handed quadruplex has a distinctive wheel of hydration populating the almost completely circular single groove in this structure.
Bitcoin Bubbles And A Monetary Measure Of Fundamental Value, Paul Hallwood
Bitcoin Bubbles And A Monetary Measure Of Fundamental Value, Paul Hallwood
Pennsylvania Economic Review
Several papers estimate the time series properties of bitcoin prices. However, to know that bubbles occur, an estimate of fundamental value is needed. Few estimates of bitcoin’s fundamental price exist, and these are either statistical in nature or based on questionable economic theory. This paper calculates the non-bubble dollar price of bitcoin using a modification to the quantity theory of money, and it is estimated to be about $54.00. At the November 2021 peak market price of bitcoin, the bubble component was more than 99%. Even at end-August 2023 after bitcoin prices had more than halved, the bubble component was …

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research
Digital games are a multi-billion-dollar industry whose production and consumption extend globally. Representation in games is an increasingly important topic. As those who create and consume the medium grow ever more diverse, it is essential that player or user-experience research, usability, and any consideration of how people interface with their technology is exercised through inclusive and intersectional lenses. Previous research has identified how character configuration interfaces preface white-male defaults [39, 40, 67]. This study relies on 1-on-1 play-interviews where diverse participants attempt to create “themselves” in a series of games and on group design activities to explore how participants may …

A method for achieving a target joint preload includes identifying a thread pitch of a first fastener element used to secure two components together. The first fastener element is passed through the two components and a second fastener element is threaded onto the first fastener element. A tightening torque is applied to the second fastener element, which is measured as the trial tightening torque. A loosening torque is applied to the second fastener element, which is measured as the trial removal torque. A required tightening torque that is required to be applied to the second fastener element to achieve the …
Attochemistry Regulation Of Charge Migration, Aderonke Folorunso
Attochemistry Regulation Of Charge Migration, Aderonke Folorunso
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Charge migration (CM) is a coherent attosecond process that involves the movement of localized holes across a molecule. This phenomenon is potentially useful to understand the fundamental principles of photochemistry, such as light harvesting. The first part of this dissertation discusses the molecular modes of attosecond charge migration. In this work, we used first-principles calculations to investigate the modes of charge migration (CM) in halogenated hydrocarbon chains at attosecond timescales. We have simulated the creation of a localized hole on the halogen atom using constrained density functional theory (DFT) and then tracked its subsequent dynamics with time-dependent DFT (TDDFT). Our …

Robust 6d Fluorescence Microscopy, Jasmine Cheng
Robust 6d Fluorescence Microscopy, Jasmine Cheng
Electrical and Systems Engineering Undergraduate Student Research
Single-Molecule Orientation Localization Microscopy (SMOLM) measures the positions and orientations of single fluorophores precisely, approaching fundamental classical and quantum limits. However, a disadvantage of SMOLM is the time-consuming nature of its acquisition and reconstruction processes. In my thesis, I introduce an innovative framework that simplifies the detection and estimation algorithms used in SMOLM into a computationally efficient high-dimensional deconvolution algorithm. This framework extracts six-dimensional information of continuous biological structures from just a single camera image (i.e., a single shot). While this method is diffraction limited, unlike conventional SMOLM algorithms, it nevertheless offers accurate and precise estimations of the orientations of …
Estimating The Cholesterol Affinity Of Integral Membrane Proteins From Experimental Data, Theodore L. Steck, S. M. Ali Tabei, Yvonne Lange
Estimating The Cholesterol Affinity Of Integral Membrane Proteins From Experimental Data, Theodore L. Steck, S. M. Ali Tabei, Yvonne Lange
Faculty Publications
The cholesterol affinities of many integral plasma membrane proteins have been estimated by molecular computation. However, these values lack experimental confirmation. We therefore developed a simple mathematical model to extract sterol affinity constants and stoichiometries from published isotherms for the dependence of the activity of such proteins on the membrane cholesterol concentration. The binding curves for these proteins are sigmoidal, with strongly lagged thresholds attributable to competition for the cholesterol by bilayer phospholipids. The model provided isotherms that matched the experimental data using published values for the sterol association constants and stoichiometries of the phospholipids. Three oligomeric transporters were found …

Fuel Hydrogen cells become nowadays a major candidate to replace the diesel in powering the traction locomotives since they offer low emission of pollutant gases, high efficiency, and flexible modular structure without the need for installation of electrification infrastructure for railway networks. However, they cannot respond appropriately to the fast load transients due to their slow internal electrochemical and thermodynamic responses. Therefore, they shall be integrated with fast dynamics Li-ion battery cells to form a hybrid power source for traction systems. Accordingly, this paper presents a development of a new smart integrated power source of fuel hydrogen and Li-ion battery …
