Ode Models Of Wealth Concentration And Taxation, Bruce Boghosian, Christoph Borgers Jan 2024

Ode Models Of Wealth Concentration And Taxation, Bruce Boghosian, Christoph Borgers

CODEE Journal

We refer to an individual holding a non-negligible fraction of the country’s total wealth as an oligarch. We explain how a model due to Boghosian et al. can be used to explore the effects of taxation on the emergence of oligarchs. The model suggests that oligarchs will emerge when wealth taxation is below a certain threshold, not when it is above the threshold. The underlying mechanism is a transcritical bifurcation. The model also suggests that taxation of income and capital gains alone cannot prevent the emergence of oligarchs. We suggest several opportunities for students to explore modifications of the model.

On Progress In Exploring Controlled Viscous Limit-Cycle Oscillations In Modified Glauert Airfoil, Ethan Deweese, Lap Nguyen, Erik Vataker, William Mackunis, Vladimir Golubev, Ron Efrati, Oksana Stalnov

Publications

The paper reports on the progress in the development of a novel robust, nonlinear flow control technology that employs an array of synthetic-jet actuators (SJAs) embedded in 2-DOF, elastically mounted, optimized Modified Glauert (MG) airfoil design in order to control limit cycle oscillations (LCO) at low subsonic flow regimes. The focus here is on the conceptual design of the wind energy harvesting system that employs, e.g., a piezoelectric device to extract energy from plunging LCO, with the closed-loop controller being capable to sustain the required LCO amplitudes over a wide range of wind speeds. The current high-fidelity studies first include …

Fluid Flow, Mineralization And Deformation In An Oceanic Detachment Fault: Microtextural, Geochemical And Isotopic Evidence From Pyrite At 13°30′N On The Mid-Atlantic Ridge, Andrew J. Martin, John W. Jamieson, Sven Petersen, Mostafa Fayek, Javier Escartin

Geoscience Faculty Research

Hydrothermal fluids in ultramafic-hosted hydrothermal systems associated with oceanic detachment faults can be more oxidizing compared to mafic-hosted vent sites. These fluids form a mineral assemblage of pyrite, magnetite and hematite. At 13°30′N on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, chlorite-quartz breccias recovered from an exposed fault scarp contain pyrite, with abundant magnetite and hematite, indicating that the redox of the fluids was variable. In primary micron-scale zonations in pyrite, Ni, Co, and Se have a decoupled relationship, recording fluctuations in the chemical composition and temperature of hydrothermal fluid as the grains grew. Secondary zonations that erase and overprint primary zonations are limited …

Priority Skills For Engineers On The Island Of Ireland: Key Stakeholder Perceptions, Rosalind M Henry, Margaret Morgan, Una Beagon, Ruchita Jani, Janet Mckennedy, Brian Bowe

Reports

Executive Summary

Life on a shared island, in particular the island of Ireland (comprising Ireland and Northern Ireland), presents both challenges and opportunities, including for engineers tasked with addressing problems to help solve the SDGs that are indifferent to boundaries. Research demonstrates that (relative to current engineers) the engineer of the future will require a more diverse range of skills to navigate an increasingly complex work environment. Given this context, identification of relevant priority skills would therefore prove useful in focusing engineering educational initiatives.

Building on a European study (Beagon et al, 2022a) which identified at a European level the …

Smartgrid-Ng: Blockchain Protocol For Secure Transaction Processing In Next Generation Smart Grid, Lokendra Vishwakarma, Debasis Das, Sajal K. Das, Christian Becker

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

With the advent of Blockchain and the Internet of Things (IoT), the Smart Grid is a rapidly growing technology in decentralized energy distribution and trading. However, this advancement came with some serious cyber security challenges and attacks, such as single-point failure due to a centralized architecture of smart grids, slow transaction processing, emerging cybersecurity threats, double-spending, fork, and fault tolerance. We propose a comprehensive framework for the smart grid called SmartGrid-NG to solve all these issues. Instead of using blockchain as a blackbox plugin tool, we also propose a reputation-based blockchain protocol called GridChain to increase the performance of blockchain-based …

Making-To-Be: Documents, Facta, And Material-Discursive Agency, Elliott Hauser Jan 2024

Making-To-Be: Documents, Facta, And Material-Discursive Agency, Elliott Hauser

Proceedings from the Document Academy

This paper presents the performative analysis of agency within and surrounding documents as a path towards uniting the otherwise incompatible insights of both meaningcentric and materialcentric approaches. I contrast the terms agentical, providing agency, and agentic, possessing agency, to help clarify the apparent incompatibilities of prior approaches. I argue that a relational conception of agency, wherein the agentical/agentic distinction is blurred, preserves important virtues of both meaning and materialcentric approaches to documents. This paves the way for a unified materialdiscursive account of documents and a cure for document studies’ inherited duality malady. Extending prior work on capta (Drucker, 2011) and …

Integrating External Controls By Regression Calibration For Genome-Wide Association Study, Lirong Zhu, Shijia Yan, Xuewei Cao, Shuanglin Zhang, Qiuying Sha

Michigan Tech Publications

Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have successfully revealed many disease-associated genetic variants. For a case-control study, the adequate power of an association test can be achieved with a large sample size, although genotyping large samples is expensive. A cost-effective strategy to boost power is to integrate external control samples with publicly available genotyped data. However, the naive integration of external controls may inflate the type I error rates if ignoring the systematic differences (batch effect) between studies, such as the differences in sequencing platforms, genotype-calling procedures, population stratification, and so forth. To account for the batch effect, we propose an approach …

Enrichment Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon Metabolizing Microorganisms On The Oral Mucosa Of Tobacco Users, James V. Defrancesco, Lin Tao, M Paul Chiarelli, Sylvia Pavlova, Antonia Kolokythas, Joel Schwartz, Benjamin Salameh, Stefan J. Green, Guy Adami

Chemistry: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Certain soil microbes resist and metabolize polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The same is true for a subset of skin microbes. In the human mouth, oral microbes have the potential to oxidize tobacco PAHs, thereby increasing these chemicals' ability to cause cancer of adjacent epithelium. We hypothesized that we could identify, in smokers, the oral mucosal microbes that can metabolize PAH. We isolated bacteria and fungi that survived long-term in minimal media with PAHs as the sole carbon source, under aerobic conditions, from the oral mucosa in 17 of 26 smokers and two of 14 nonsmokers. Of bacteria genera that survived …

Constant-Stress Partially Accelerated Life Testing For Weibull Inverted Exponential Distribution With Censored Data, Samah M. Ahmed

Iraqi Journal for Computer Science and Mathematics

The novelty of this article is estimating the parameters ofWeibull inverted exponential (WIE) distribution with a constant stress partially accelerated life test (PALT) under adaptive type-II progressively censored samples. Moreover, the maximum likelihood estimators (MLEs), their asymptotic variances confidence intervals, and Bayes estimators (BEs) of the model parameters and the acceleration factor are obtained. Furthermore, the approximate bootstrap and credible confidence intervals of the estimators are acquired. The accuracy of the MLEs and BEs for the model parameters and the acceleration factor is investigated through the simulation studies.
