Integrating Moral Norms And Stewardship Identity Into The Theory Of Planned Behavior To Understand Altruistic Conservation Behavior Among Hunters In Southwestern Utah (Usa), Jacob C. Richards, Zachary D. Miller, Russell Norvell, Jordan W. Smith Jan 2024

Integrating Moral Norms And Stewardship Identity Into The Theory Of Planned Behavior To Understand Altruistic Conservation Behavior Among Hunters In Southwestern Utah (Usa), Jacob C. Richards, Zachary D. Miller, Russell Norvell, Jordan W. Smith

Environment and Society Faculty Publications

We integrate moral norms and stewardship identity into the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) to predict the use of non-lead ammunition in the California condor recovery zone of southwestern Utah. Data were collected from licensed hunters via an online survey. Structural equation models of the TPB without and with the moral norms and stewardship identity constructs were compared to evaluate the utility of integrating these constructs into the TPB. Moral norms did have a significant direct influence on hunters’ behavioral intentions. Both moral norms and stewardship identity had significant indirect influences on behavioral intentions via the core constructs of the …

Embedding Development Education And International Service-Learning In Undergraduate Stem Programmes To Address Sustainable Development Goal Target 4.7, Ciaran O'Leary, Claire M. Mcdonnell

Irish Journal of Academic Practice

Development education and international service-learning are approaches to education that have the potential to offer students an opportunity to develop their understanding and appreciation of global issues such as poverty and inequality. In this regard, both approaches are aligned with Global Citizenship, Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) target 4.7. In this paper, the experiences of eight students who participated in an international service-learning project between 2011 and 2013 are evaluated using a survey and a thematic analysis. By undertaking the evaluation a decade following the running of the module, the analysis benefits from the pivot …

Chimera Baryon Spectrum In The Sp(4) Completion Of Composite Higgs Models, Ho Hsiao, Ed Bennett, Deog Ki Hong, Jong-Wan Lee, C. -J. David Lin, Biagio Lucini, Maurizio Piai, Davide Vadacchino

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

In strongly coupled gauge theories that serve as completions of composite Higgs models, the fermionic bound states formed by fermions (hyperquarks) transforming in different representations, called chimera baryons, could serve as top partners, by embedding of the Standard Model appropriately. We report our results on the spectrum of chimera baryons in the Sp(4) gauge theory with hyperquarks transforming in fundamental and two-index antisymmetric representations. For this study, we adopt the quenched approximation. We investigate the mass hierarchy between the lightest chimera baryons with different quantum numbers, as a function of the lattice parameters. Inspired by baryon chiral effective field theory, …

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Silacyclohex-2-ene and 1,1-difluorosilacyclohex-2-ene have been synthesized, and the chirped-pulse, Fourier-transform microwave spectra of each have been observed and analyzed from 4.9 to 23.1 GHz. Quantum chemical calculations have been performed at the B3LYP-D3BJ/Def2TZVP level of theory and predict μa to be the largest dipole moment component with a significantly larger value in this component for 1,1-difluorosilacyclohex-2-ene. In accordance with this prediction, the spectra were predominantly a-type with the observation of a few b- and c-type transitions. The signal-to-noise ratio was adequate in both spectra to observe 29Si, 30Si, and all singly substituted 13C isotopologues in natural …

Five-Step Guide To Writing About African Children: A Satirical Homage To Decolonizing Our Minds And Challenging Stereotypes, Randall Yesmont, Bright Alozie Jan 2024

Five-Step Guide To Writing About African Children: A Satirical Homage To Decolonizing Our Minds And Challenging Stereotypes, Randall Yesmont, Bright Alozie

Black Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

This essay is a work of satire, in the style of the late Binyavanga Wainaina’s “How to Write About Africa” and Bright Alozie’s “How to Write About Nigeria” and “How to Write About African Women.” In this satirical homage, we explore the pesky stereotypes that often accompany Western perceptions and writings about African children. We hope that stereotypes satirically highlighted in this piece shed light on the dangers of a single story while advocating for the recognition of the humanity, agency, voices, and dignity of African children.

Mitosis is a critical criterion for meningioma grading. However, pathologists' assessment of mitoses is subject to significant inter-observer variation due to challenges in locating mitosis hotspots and accurately detecting mitotic figures. To address this issue, we leverage digital pathology and propose a computational strategy to enhance pathologists' mitosis assessment. The strategy has two components: (1) A depth-first search algorithm that quantifies the mathematically maximum mitotic count in 10 consecutive high-power fields, which can enhance the preciseness, especially in cases with borderline mitotic count. (2) Implementing a collaborative sphere to group a set of pathologists to detect mitoses under each high-power …

On The Singular Pebbling Number Of A Graph, Harmony R. Morris Jan 2024

On The Singular Pebbling Number Of A Graph, Harmony R. Morris

Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal

In this paper, we define a new parameter of a connected graph as a spin-off of the pebbling number (which is the smallest t such that every supply of t pebbles can satisfy every demand of one pebble). This new parameter is the singular pebbling number, the smallest t such that a player can be given any configuration of at least t pebbles and any target vertex and can successfully move pebbles so that exactly one pebble ends on the target vertex. We also prove that the singular pebbling number of any graph on 3 or more vertices is equal …

Compartmental Modeling For The Neophyte: An Application Of Berkeley Madonna, Olcay Akman, Siddharth Bhumpelli, Cody Cline, Christopher Hay-Jahans

Spora: A Journal of Biomathematics

Compartmental modeling serves as a necessary framework in many fields, especially biomathematics and ecology. This article introduces readers to a user-friendly approach to constructing compartmental models and solving the resulting systems of differential equations to simulate real-world applications. The platform used is Berkeley Madonna, a software package that has an intuitive graphical interface which empowers users—even those with limited mathematical and programming backgrounds—to focus on modeling concepts rather than mathematical or programming intricacies. This makes Berkeley Madonna an ideal platform for students, educators, and researchers.

Side Lobe Level Reduction And Array Thinning Of Concentric Circular Antenna Arrays, Alzahraa H. Nosier, Ahmed M. Elkhawaga, Mohamed E. Nasr, Nessim M. Mahmoud, Amr H. Hussein

Mansoura Engineering Journal

This paper presents a new beamforming technique based on the hybrid combination of the convolution algorithm (CA) and the genetic algorithm (GA) for reducing side lobe level (SLL) and array thinning of concentric circular antenna arrays (CCAA), which is denoted as C/GA technique. The CA determines the excitations of the elements, while the GA optimizes the radii of the circular arrays to adjust the half-power beamwidth (HPBW). For CCAA consisting of uniform feeding circular arrays, we assume that there are excitation coefficients that are distributed symmetrically around the array center and arranged in a vector. The excitation vector is convolved …

Mathematical Modeling Of Fruit Drying And System Analysis Of The Process (On The Example Of Persimmon), Gani Dadayev, Jasur Safarov, Shakhnoza Sultanova, Qobiljon Muxiddinov

Technical science and innovation

Vegetable raw materials, as an object of drying, are characterized by a large amount of water and a low content of dry substances. Vegetable raw materials have a capillary-porous structure. Food products contain both bound and free moisture at the same time. The removal of moisture from the material during drying depends on the total moisture content and the form of connection of moisture with the material. Adsorption and osmotic - bound moisture is retained at the interface of colloidal particles with the environment. Food products contain both bound and free moisture at the same time. The quantitative ratio between …

Capacitive Electrode Based Moisture Measurement Converter Errors And How To Eliminate Them, Hamdam Jabborov, Temurbek Rashidov Jan 2024

Capacitive Electrode Based Moisture Measurement Converter Errors And How To Eliminate Them, Hamdam Jabborov, Temurbek Rashidov

Technical science and innovation

The article discusses the errors associated with the moisture measuring transducer that is based on the cylindrical electrode, along with their sources and calculation formulas for error elimination. The initial capacitance of the capacitive electrode humidity converter is dependent on its geometric parameters, such as the radii of the electrodes and their length. Accurate calculation of these geometric parameters enables the reduction of regular measurement errors in the input and switching circuit of the moisture converter to a minimum value, resulting in a significant increase in the informativeness and accuracy of the output signal. Consequently, some sources of measurement errors …

What Does ‘(Non)-Absoluteness Of Observed Events’ Mean?, Emily Adlam Jan 2024

What Does ‘(Non)-Absoluteness Of Observed Events’ Mean?, Emily Adlam

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Recently there have emerged an assortment of theorems relating to the ‘absoluteness of emerged events,’ and these results have sometimes been used to argue that quantum mechanics may involve some kind of metaphysically radical non-absoluteness, such as relationalism or perspectivalism. However, in our view a close examination of these theorems fails to convincingly support such possibilities. In this paper we argue that the Wigner’s friend paradox, the theorem of Bong et al and the theorem of Lawrence et al are all best understood as demonstrating that if quantum mechanics is universal, and if certain auxiliary assumptions hold, then the world …

Group 14 Metallocene Catalysts For Carbonyl Hydroboration And Cyanosilylation, Haley J. Robertson, Mallory N. Fujiwara, Allegra L. Liberman-Martin

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

A series of six Group 14 metallocene compounds (M = Ge, Sn, Pb) were studied as catalysts for carbonyl hydroboration and cyanosilylation reactions at room temperature. Both bis(pentamethylcyclopentadienyl) and tetramethyldisiloxa[3]metallocenophane compounds were compared. The tin and lead metallocenophanes exhibited the highest reactivity in hydroboration and cyanosilylation reactions. Hammett analysis of aldehyde hydroboration provided a ρ value of 0.73, suggesting a buildup of negative charge during the turnover-limiting step, consistent with the transition state for hydride transfer to the carbonyl center. NMR studies of Lewis acidity indicate that the Ge, Sn, and Pb tetramethyldisiloxa[3]metallocenophane compounds are weak Lewis acids.
