Preparing Pakistan For Meeting The Challenges Of The 21st Century, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Talks, Speeches, & Discourse

The three decades 1990-2020 ( despite the set backs of the Global financial crisis of 2009 and the pandemic of 2019) have resulted in remarkable gains for the Emerging and Developing Countries (EDCs). The hollowing out of the Soviet economy followed by the disintegration of the Soviet Union itself gave impetus to the trend of Deregulation, Privatization and Liberalization which was being followed by Japan, Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong and Taiwan .This trend was then emulated by the larger East Asian countries of Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand the Philippines. The major and unprecedented break through came when China, the most populous …

Introduction To Soil Health For High School Students, Jiyul Chang, Becki Ritter, Dean Feller, Madhav P. Nepal Jan 2024

Introduction To Soil Health For High School Students, Jiyul Chang, Becki Ritter, Dean Feller, Madhav P. Nepal

iLEARN Teaching Resources

Growing food from soil is a basic and important work to continue supporting the growing human population. Producing more foods and producing healthy food are challenging tasks, because producing foods use soil nutrients but can deplete the soil. This can adversely affect the natural balance. If the soil is healthy, we will not only increase production but also grow healthy food. This class is a starting point for learning about Soil Health – where students will learn about how the soil functions and how it directly influences the food we grow. In summary, it is all about striking the right …

The Fulfillment Service In Online Marketplaces, Jun Li, Wenjing Shen, Yi Liao, Gangshu (George) Cai, Xiangfeng Chen Jan 2024

The Fulfillment Service In Online Marketplaces, Jun Li, Wenjing Shen, Yi Liao, Gangshu (George) Cai, Xiangfeng Chen

Information Systems and Analytics

In recent times, fulfillment services in online marketplaces have witnessed a surge in popularity. Dominant e-commerce platforms, such as Amazon.com, now allow small retailers to join their online marketplaces, while concurrently providing comprehensive fulfillment services. In return, small retailers pay a fulfillment fee per unit of sales. We examine the advantages of these fulfillment programs in the context of a dominant retailer that possesses an online marketplace, alongside a small retailer who operates within this marketplace and possesses private fulfillment cost information. We analyze two scenarios, contingent upon the presence or absence of competition between the two retailers, and we …

Extended Event Calculus Using Neutrosophic Logic: Method, Implementation, Analysis, Recent Progress And Future Directions, Antonios Paraskevas Jan 2024

Extended Event Calculus Using Neutrosophic Logic: Method, Implementation, Analysis, Recent Progress And Future Directions, Antonios Paraskevas

Neutrosophic Systems with Applications

Brains do not reason as digital computers do. Computers reason in clear steps with statements that are either true or false, while humans reason with vague terms of common sense. Neutrosophy is a new branch of philosophy and machine intelligence that deals with neutralities, specifically the idea of indeterminacy that is evident and experienced in our everyday lives. Indeterminacy is interpreted as everything that falls between a concept, idea, statement, declaration, etc. and its opposite. The fundamental thesis of neutrosophy is to employ neutrosophic logic, an extension of fuzzy logic, to incorporate fuzzy truth into complex schemes of formal reasoning. …

The Impact Of Intergroup Idea Exposure On Group Creative Problem-Solving, Jared B. Kenworthy, Paul B. Paulus, Lauren E. Coursey, Laura R. Marusich, Jubilee J. Dickson, Brock C. Rozich Jan 2024

The Impact Of Intergroup Idea Exposure On Group Creative Problem-Solving, Jared B. Kenworthy, Paul B. Paulus, Lauren E. Coursey, Laura R. Marusich, Jubilee J. Dickson, Brock C. Rozich

SAGE Open Access Agreement Publications-Archive

Intragroup and intergroup network creativity were assessed in an experiment varying the degree of access to ideas generated by other groups. In an open-access condition, all members of two concurrent groups had access to the other group’s ideas. In the brokered condition, one member of each group had access to the other group’s ideas. In the control condition, two groups performed independently. Following three phases of idea generation and elaboration, groups developed their final plan for surviving a zombie apocalypse. The brokered condition led to the highest level of intergroup activity, and the final product novelty across all conditions was …

Kinetic Modelling Of The Cellular Metabolic Responses Underpinning In Vitro Glycolysis Assays, Nitin Patil, Zohreh Mirveis, Hugh Byrne Jan 2024

Kinetic Modelling Of The Cellular Metabolic Responses Underpinning In Vitro Glycolysis Assays, Nitin Patil, Zohreh Mirveis, Hugh Byrne

Articles

This study aims to demonstrate the benefits of augmenting commercially available, real-time, in vitro glycolysis assays with phenomenological rate equation-based kinetic models, describing the contributions of the underpinning metabolic pathways. To this end, a commercially available glycolysis assay, sensitive to changes in extracellular acidification (extracellular pH), was used to derive the glycolysis pathway kinetics. The pathway was numerically modelled using a series of ordinary differential rate equations, to simulate the obtained experimental results. The sensitivity of the model to the key equation parameters was also explored. The cellular glycolysis pathway kinetics were determined for three different cell-lines, under nonmodulated and …

Editorial: Observations And Simulations Of Layering Phenomena In The Middle/Upper Atmosphere And Ionosphere, Bingkun Yu, Xuguang Cai, Daniel J. Emmons Ii, Chong Wang, Jainfei Wu

Faculty Publications

The middle/upper atmosphere and ionosphere are the transition between neutral and ionized components of the Earth’s atmosphere, including stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere, ionospheric E region and ionospheric F region (Laštovička et al., 2006; Xu, et al., 2007; Smith, 2012). The atmospheric thermal structure and composition are significantly affected by dynamical processes through coupling. The layering phenomena such as mesospheric metal layers, sporadic E layers, and noctilucent clouds are important tracers to study mechanisms of the vertical coupling from the lower to the upper atmosphere (Dou et al., 2010; Plane, 2012; Xue et al., 2013).

Residual Mechanical Properties Of Ggbs-Fa-Sf Blended Geopolymer Concrete After Exposed To Elevated Temperatures, Min Yu, Tan Wang, Yin Chi, Dawang Li, Long-Yuan Li, Feiyu Shi Jan 2024

Residual Mechanical Properties Of Ggbs-Fa-Sf Blended Geopolymer Concrete After Exposed To Elevated Temperatures, Min Yu, Tan Wang, Yin Chi, Dawang Li, Long-Yuan Li, Feiyu Shi

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Geopolymer concrete has been increasingly used in industry. However, if the geopolymer concrete is blended using a single percussor its performance is often very limited by the properties of the percussor. Thus, it is preferable to use multiple percussors to produce geopolymer concrete. In this paper an experimental study is reported on the residual micro- and macro-mechanical properties of the steel-fibre reinforced geopolymer concrete blended by using combined percussors of ground granulated blast-furnace slag, fly ash, and salic fume. The experimental work included the examination of the effects of exposure temperature, the volume fractions of coarse aggregate and steel fibre …

Quantum Scars And Regular Eigenstates In A Chaotic Spinor Condensate, Bertrand Evrard, Andrea Pizzi, Simeon I. Mistakidis, Ceren B. Dag

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Quantum Many-Body Scars Consist Of A Few Low-Entropy Eigenstates In An Otherwise Chaotic Many-Body Spectrum, And Can Weakly Break Ergodicity Resulting In Robust Oscillatory Dynamics. The Notion Of Quantum Many-Body Scars Follows The Original Single-Particle Scars Introduced Within The Context Of Quantum Billiards, Where Scarring Manifests In The Form Of A Quantum Eigenstate Concentrating Around An Underlying Classical Unstable Periodic Orbit. A Direct Connection Between These Notions Remains An Outstanding Problem. Here, We Study A Many-Body Spinor Condensate That, Owing To Its Collective Interactions, Is Amenable To The Diagnostics Of Scars. We Characterize The System's Rich Dynamics, Spectrum, And Phase …

Detection And Classification Of Sporadic E Using Convolutional Neural Networks, J. A. Ellis, Daniel J. Emmons, M. B. Cohen Jan 2024

Detection And Classification Of Sporadic E Using Convolutional Neural Networks, J. A. Ellis, Daniel J. Emmons, M. B. Cohen

Faculty Publications

In this work, convolutional neural networks (CNN) are developed to detect and characterize sporadic E (Es), demonstrating an improvement over current methods. This includes a binary classification model to determine if Es is present, followed by a regression model to estimate the Es ordinary mode critical frequency (foEs), a proxy for the intensity, along with the height at which the Es layer occurs (hEs). Signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and excess phase profiles from six Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) radio occultation (RO) missions during the years 2008–2022 are used as the inputs of the model. Intensity (foEs) and the …

Grand Challenges In Membrane Transport, Modeling And Simulation, Jacob Monroe, Chidambaram Thamariselvan, Ranil Wickramasinghe Jan 2024

Grand Challenges In Membrane Transport, Modeling And Simulation, Jacob Monroe, Chidambaram Thamariselvan, Ranil Wickramasinghe

Chemical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Today, membranes play an increasing role in separation processes across a wide range of industries, including water treatment, biomedical applications, bioseparations, and gas separations (Yeom et al., 2022). Numerous different membrane types exist, which can be broadly categorized as either porous or non-porous, where pores may be or may not be filled with a separate phase from the bulk solvent and membrane phases. In addition, various driving forces exist - pressure, concentration, electric field, etc.—that lead to transport across the membrane. For a porous membrane, solute transport is usually governed by convective flow through the pores. Micron-sized pores are used …

Mendelian randomization has been widely used to assess the causal effect of a heritable exposure variable on an outcome of interest, using genetic variants as instrumental variables. In practice, data on the exposure variable can be incomplete due to high cost of measurement and technical limits of detection. In this paper, we propose a valid and efficient method to handle both unmeasured and undetectable values of the exposure variable in one-sample Mendelian randomization analysis with individual-level data. We estimate the causal effect of the exposure variable on the outcome using maximum likelihood estimation and develop an expectation maximization algorithm for …
