Modeling Of Nearshore Wave Transformations Behind Submerged Breakwaters, Mona Mahmoud Abdelay, Ibrahim Mohamed Rashwan, Ahmed Shalby, Hewida Mohamed Omara

Journal of Engineering Research

Breakwaters can generally be divided into three categories based on where the sea level is: submerged breakwater, emerged breakwater, and lower limit breakwater. Nearshore barriers with an underwater structure called submerged breakwaters are used to dissipate the force of wave strikes and safeguard the shoreline. The wave transmission coefficient value can be used to assess submerged breakwaters' contribution to the wave energy decrease. In the past mathematical and physical models were used to understand how the submerged breakwater affects incoming wave energy, hydrodynamic processes, and morphological changes. In the present study, the MIKE21 SW software as the numerical model was …

The Effect Of An Existing Tunnel And A Newly Excavated Tunnel On Ground Loss Beneath Sand Slope-3d Numerical Study, Ashraf Nazir, Ahmed Nasr, Asmaa Saeed

Journal of Engineering Research

Abstract- Most researchers perform their numerical models for tunnels by modeling perfectly horizontal ground surfaces above the tunnels. The prediction of surface settlement of a sandy slope due to the interaction mechanism between the slope and the tunnels is one of the critical problems in urban areas. As a result, in this work, a numerical analysis using PLAXIS 3D TUNNEL has been performed to investigate the effect of tunnel excavation on the deformation of a shallow sandy slope, and empirically by the Herzog method. The study also assesses the influence of parameters on slope deformation that have not been …

Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Faculty Publications

In the last decade, despite rapid advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) transforming many industry practices, construction largely lags in adoption. Recently, the emergence and rapid adoption of advanced large language models (LLMs) like OpenAI’s GPT, Google’s PaLM, and Meta’s Llama have shown great potential and sparked considerable global interest. However, the current surge lacks a study investigating the opportunities and challenges of implementing Generative AI (GenAI) in the construction sector, creating a critical knowledge gap for researchers and practitioners. This underlines the necessity to explore the prospects and complexities of GenAI integration. Bridging this gap is fundamental to optimizing GenAI’s …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Wu-tou decoction (WTD), a traditional Chinese medicine prescription, is used to treat rheumatoid arthritis (RA). It works by controlling intestinal flora and its metabolites, which in turn modulates the inflammatory response and intestinal barrier function. Small molecular compounds (SM) and polysaccharides (PS) were the primary constituents of WTD extract. In this work, a model of adjuvant-induced arthritis (AIA) in rats was established and treated with WTD, SM, and PS, respectively. 16S rRNA gene sequencing was used to examine the regulatory impact of the various groups on the disturbance of the gut flora induced by RA. Further, since PS cannot be …

Low Complexity Radio Frequency Interference Mitigation For Radio Astronomy Using Large Antenna Array, Zaid Bin Tariq, Teviet Creighton, Louis Percy Dartez, Naofal Al-Dhahir, Murat Torlak

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

With the ongoing growth in radio communications, there is an increased contamination of radio astronomical source data, which hinders the study of celestial radio sources. In many cases, fast mitigation of strong radio frequency interference (RFI) is valuable for studying short lived radio transients so that the astronomers can perform detailed observations of celestial radio sources. The standard method to manually excise contaminated blocks in time and frequency makes the removed data useless for radio astronomy analyses. This motivates the need for better radio frequency interference (RFI) mitigation techniques for array of size M antennas. Although many solutions for mitigating …

Model Predictive Control Of A Lab-Scale Thermal Energy Storage System In Relap5-3d, Jaron Wallace, Daniel Hill, David Thurston, John Hedengren, Matthew Memmott

Faculty Publications

Increased renewable energy penetration of an electrical grid generally creates more supply fluctuations. Traditional base-load systems, such as nuclear power, can be retrofitted with thermal energy storage (TES) systems to meet supply demand fluctuations. These systems can store energy during low electricity demand times to allow the reactor to operate at constant power while simultaneously fluctuating electricity output. The control of these systems is of vital importance and Model Predictive Control (MPC) is a leading control mechanism for optimized production plans with forecast information. This study combines high fidelity RELAP5-3D models with MPC to control an experimental benchtop system that …

The Optimization Of A Model Pipeline For Rapidly Rotating Stars, Jackson Ladd Sackrider, Jason P. Aufdenberg Jan 2024

The Optimization Of A Model Pipeline For Rapidly Rotating Stars, Jackson Ladd Sackrider, Jason P. Aufdenberg

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

Stellar intensity interferometry observations of stars at 416 nm complement Michelson interferometry observations in the near-infrared where stellar surface intensity gradients (e.g., limb darkening) are weaker. Intensity gradients due to gravity darkening in rapidly rotating stars are also expected to show higher contrast at 416 nm relative to the near-infrared. Using Python, Fortran, Perl, and KornShell scripts, we created a software pipeline to model stellar photospheres of rapidly rotating stars and compare predictions at these wavelength regions. The pipeline highlighted in this poster can produce model images, visibility predictions, and synthetic spectra.

The highest adsorption efficiency, reaching 94.4367%, was directly correlated with contact time, adsorbent dosage, pH value, and agitation speed, and inversely related to other variables. Morphological studies on the treated adsorbent, indicated structural …

Sandpiper Food Search Algorithm: A New Optimization Approach For Agents With Limited Knowledge, Jessica Christa Wira Jan 2024

Sandpiper Food Search Algorithm: A New Optimization Approach For Agents With Limited Knowledge, Jessica Christa Wira

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

Optimization problems have become increasingly complex, stretching the limits of conventional methods such as convex optimization, Newton-Raphson method, and others. To address this challenge, numerous metaheuristic algorithms, often inspired by nature, have emerged due to their adaptability and robustness (for example, Gray Wolf Algorithm and Ant Colony Optimization). However, functions that are non-symmetrical or have unique profiles such as basins, valleys, or plates remain challenging for these algorithms. Moreover, most of these existing algorithms have global knowledge, which is unrealistic for some real-world problems such as underground mining and spacecraft trajectory. To bridge this gap, a new biologically inspired optimization …

Quality Control Of Synthetic Spectra For Sirius A, Katelyn Sonnen, Jason P. Aufdenberg

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

The elemental composition of a star's atmosphere is essential to understanding its evolution. Sirius A (Alpha Canis Majoris) is ideal for spectral analysis due to its slow rotation, lack of atmospheric convection. Its parameters, mass, radius, surface gravity, and effective temperature, are all constrained to 1%. Kurucz and Furenlid (1979) published Sample Spectral Atlas for Sirius, however their atlas only covered 354 nm to 440 nm in wavelength. A spectral analysis from 124 nm to 870 nm is necessary to achieve a more accurate abundances using prominent lines of the elements O, Na, Mg, Si, Ca, Cr, Fe, and Zn …

National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications

Advancements in remote sensing techniques have greatly enhanced crop monitoring and yield estimation, with spectral vegetation indices (VIs) serving as a key component. Our study investigates the use of Sentinel-2 data, notable for its red-edge bands, in estimating sugarcane yield in Ethiopia's Awash Basin. Utilizing 22 VIs from S2 imagery, our approach combines Random Forest (RF) regression with the Recursive Feature Elimination (RFE) algorithm to improve the accuracy of sugarcane yield predictions. The results demonstrate the superior performance of the RF-RFE method over traditional RF with full datasets and Stepwise Multiple Regression (SMR). Particularly, VIs focusing on the red-edge spectral …

Extended Event Calculus Using Neutrosophic Logic: Method, Implementation, Analysis, Recent Progress And Future Directions, Antonios Paraskevas

Neutrosophic Systems with Applications

Brains do not reason as digital computers do. Computers reason in clear steps with statements that are either true or false, while humans reason with vague terms of common sense. Neutrosophy is a new branch of philosophy and machine intelligence that deals with neutralities, specifically the idea of indeterminacy that is evident and experienced in our everyday lives. Indeterminacy is interpreted as everything that falls between a concept, idea, statement, declaration, etc. and its opposite. The fundamental thesis of neutrosophy is to employ neutrosophic logic, an extension of fuzzy logic, to incorporate fuzzy truth into complex schemes of formal reasoning. …

Open System Neural Networks, Bradley Hatch Jan 2024

Open System Neural Networks, Bradley Hatch

Theses and Dissertations

Recent advances in self-supervised learning have made it possible to reuse information-rich models that have been generally pre-trained on massive amounts of data for other downstream tasks. But the pre-training process can be drastically different from the fine-tuning training process, which can lead to inefficient learning. We address this disconnect in training dynamics by structuring the learning process like an open system in thermodynamics. Open systems can achieve a steady state when low-entropy inputs are converted to high-entropy outputs. We modify the the model and the learning process to mimic this behavior, and attend more to elements of the input …
