The trade-off between robustness and tunability is a central challenge in the pursuit of quantum simulation and fault-tolerant quantum computation. In particular, quantum architectures are often designed to achieve high coherence at the expense of tunability. Many current qubit designs have fixed energy levels and consequently limited types of controllable interactions. Here by adiabatically transforming fixed-frequency superconducting circuits into modifiable Floquet qubits, we demonstrate an XXZ Heisenberg interaction with fully adjustable anisotropy. This interaction model can act as the primitive for an expressive set of quantum operations, but is also the basis for quantum simulations of spin systems. To illustrate …

The safe and secure implementation of increasingly complex features is a major challenge in the development of autonomous and distributed embedded systems. Automated design-time procedures that guarantee the fulfillment of critical system properties are a promising approach to tackle this challenge. In the European project XANDAR, which took place from 2021 to 2023, eight partners developed an X-by-Construction (XbC) design framework to support developers in the creation of embedded software systems with certain safety, security, and real-time properties. The design framework combines a model-based toolchain with a hypervisor-based runtime architecture. It targets modern high-performance hardware, facilitates the integration of machine …

The Ring Cycle: Journeying Through The Language Of Tolkien’S Third Age With Corpus Linguistics, Michael Livesey
Journal of Tolkien Research
This article explores the journey taken by the One Ring across J.R.R. Tolkien’s Third Age writings. It employs a digital humanities approach to analyse linguistic patterns in Tolkien’s use of the word ring, across The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Specifically, the article employs corpus linguistic methods to track shifts in the quantities and qualities of the Ring’s appearance across these texts. It uses techniques of keyness and collocation analysis to trace transformations in these quantities/qualities, including: a) the Ring’s transition from a central to a peripheral place in the Third Age’s narrative arc; and b) …

While visual literacy has been identified as a foundational skill in life science education, there are many challenges in teaching and assessing biomolecular visualization skills. Among these are the lack of consensus about what constitutes competence and limited understanding of student and instructor perceptions of visual literacy tasks. In this study, we administered a set of biomolecular visualization assessments, developed as part of the BioMolViz project, to both students and instructors at multiple institutions and compared their perceptions of task difficulty. We then analyzed our findings using a mixed-methods approach. Quantitative analysis was used to answer the following research questions: …

Research On Error Evaluation Model Of Electricity Meter Combining Improved Svr And Fading Memory Recursive Least Squares Algorithm, Hao Wang, Peng Yang, Chong Li, Hongtao Shen, Qiang Xue, Qian Li
Journal of Electric Power Science and Technology
Aiming at the problems of on‑site verification difficulties and high periodic replacement costs of electricity metering devices, a combined electric meter error assessment model is proposed, which integrates the sparrow search algorithm (SSA), support vector regression (SVR), and fading memory recursive least squares algorithm (FMRLS). Firstly, this method utilizes an improved K‑Means algorithm to classify platform areas, and imports the classified samples into an SVR model optimized by the SSA for training to build a platform area line loss rate prediction model. Then, the obtained line loss rate is taken into the improved line loss model to construct an equation …

In parallel with the multi-messenger revolution, major advances in time-domain astronomy across multiple science disciplines relevant to astrophysics are becoming more urgent to address. Aside from electromagnetic observations of gravitational wave events and explosive counterparts, there are a number of “classical” astrophysical areas that require new thinking for proper exploration in the time domain. How NASA, NSF, ESA, and ESO consider the 2020 USA Decadal Survey within the astronomy community, as well as the worldwide call to support and expand time domain and multi-messenger astrophysics, it is crucial that all areas of astrophysics, including stellar, galactic, Solar System, and exoplanetary …

Small leaks, many of which often go undetected using conventional gauges, remain an urgent problem for an aging pipeline infrastructure. This article proposes a method that allows for an automated and robust leak detection and localization system by fusing distributed acoustic sensor (DAS) and distributed temperature sensor (DTS) data for machine learning. Distributed fiber-optic sensing creates an advantage over conventional gauges by providing real-time continuous measurements along the entire length of the fiber-instrumented pipeline at a high spatiotemporal resolution and sensitivity that can detect small leaks, as well as the leak location. High sensitivity, however, can create noisy data. Thus, …

The stiffness of the extracellular matrix induces differential tension within integrin-based adhesions. However, it has been unclear if the stiffness-dependent differential tension is induced solely by myosin activity. Here, we report that in the absence of myosin contractility, 3T3 fibroblasts still transmit stiffness-dependent differential levels of traction. This myosin-independent differential traction is regulated by polymerizing actin assisted by actin nucleators Arp2/3 and formin where formin has stronger contribution than Arp2/3. Interestingly, we report a four-fold reduction in traction of cells when both Arp2/3 and myosin were inhibited, compared to cells with only myosin inhibition, while there was only a slight …

Background: Carriers of the 1q21.1 distal and 15q11.2 BP1-BP2 copy number variants exhibit regional and global brain differences compared with noncarriers. However, interpreting regional differences is challenging if a global difference drives the regional brain differences. Intraindividual variability measures can be used to test for regional differences beyond global differences in brain structure.
Methods: Magnetic resonance imaging data were used to obtain regional brain values for 1q21.1 distal deletion (n = 30) and duplication (n = 27) and 15q11.2 BP1-BP2 deletion (n = 170) and duplication (n = 243) carriers and matched noncarriers (n = 2350). Regional intra-deviation scores, i.e., …

Abstract- Nowadays, several machinery and vehicles utilize mechanical elements which transmit power ranges from low, middle, and high levels depending on the type of equipment needed. Gears are the most influential design elements on any process during the running of a specific application, moreover engineers tried to obtain the optimality of a gear design which is a more compact, reliable- long service with simply operating features by following a systematic calculation of the mathematical model from standards and handbooks, however this process doesn't give the optimal design of the gears. Optimization techniques have been added to the design process for …

A turbulent flow field has a major effect on the premixed flame structure and temperature distribution that specifically determines the effectiveness of the burned fuel and the amounts of produced emissions. However, the premixed flame tangential and axial velocity distribution through the flame length help to predict the combustion and emissions attributes of the burned fuel. In this regard, an experimental and analytical investigation on premixed turbulent burners at different equivalence fuel-air ratios with different swirl vane angles has been achieved in the present work to assess the combustion performance and emissions characteristics. A theoretical methodology was carried out to …
