This study examined teachers’ perceptions and experiences regarding the interrelationships between behavior policy, student behavior, and autonomy-supportive behavior. It approximated the realities experienced by teachers to gain a deeper understanding of the challenges they encountered in implementing behavior policies and fostering autonomy-supportive behavior. While attrition, shortage, and dissatisfaction were not the primary focus, they significantly influenced the teacher participants based on their experiences with high teacher turnover in their schools. I collected qualitative through semi-structured interviews to explore teachers’ realities, using six participants from Memphis Shelby County Schools. By utilizing conflict theory and the ambiguity-conflict matrix adapted from Matland (1997), …
Incorporating Visual Information Into Natural Language Processing, Maxwell Mbabilla Aladago
Incorporating Visual Information Into Natural Language Processing, Maxwell Mbabilla Aladago
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Natural language describes entities in the world, some real and some abstract. It is also common practice to complement human learning of natural language with visual cues. This is evident in the heavily graphical nature of children’s literature which underscores the importance of visual cues in language acquisition. Similarly, the notion of “visual learners” is well recognized, reflecting the understanding that visual signals such as illustrations, gestures, and depictions effectively supplement language. In machine learning, two primary paradigms have emerged for training systems involving natural language. The first paradigm encompasses setups where pre-training and downstream tasks are exclusively in natural …

Magnetic topological materials LnSbTe (Ln = lanthanide) have attracted intensive attention because of the presence of interplay between magnetism, topological, and electron correlations depending on the choices of magnetic Ln elements. Varying Sb and Te composition is an efficient approach to control structural, magnetic, and electronic properties. Here, we report on the composition-dependent properties in PrSbxTe2-x. We identified the tetragonal-to-orthorhombic structure transitions in this material system and very large negative magnetoresistance in the x = 0.3 composition, which might be ascribed to the coupling between magnetism and transport. Such unusual magnetotransport enables PrSbxTe2-x topological materials as a promising platform for …

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications
Single-molecule techniques allow researchers to investigate individual molecules and obtain unprecedented details of the heterogeneous nature of biological entities. They play instrumental roles in studying DNA-protein interactions due to the ability to visualize DNA or proteins and to manipulate individual DNA molecules by applying force or torque. Here, we describe single-molecule DNA-flow stretching assays as hybrid tools that combine forces with fluorescence. We also review how widely these assays are utilized in elucidating working mechanisms of DNA-binding proteins. Additionally, we provide a brief explanation of various efforts to prepare DNA substrates with desired internal protein-binding sequences. More complicated needs for …

People often view mathematics as abstract, cold, and irrelevant to real life, and their school experiences likely influence such views. In this case study, we investigated the mathematics experiences of two women who participated in an afterschool girls-only STEM club 30 years ago when they were in fifth and sixth grades. We explored how the participants' early in- and out-of-school experiences informed their images of mathematics. We collected data through a survey, focus group interviews, and individual interviews. We employed oral history methods in interviews to grant participants a significant degree of freedom to retrospectively recount and reconstruct their experiences. …

Sandpiper Food Search Algorithm: A New Optimization Approach For Agents With Limited Knowledge, Jessica Christa Wira Hadipoernomo
Student Research Symposium (SRS)
Optimization plays a crucial role in refining complex system designs, improving performance, and maximizing efficiency across various applications. Traditional methods like convex optimization and the Newton-Raphson method are often insufficient for today’s increasingly complex challenges. To address this challenge, numerous metaheuristic algorithms, often inspired by nature, have emerged including Particle Swarm Optimization, Genetic Algorithm, Bat Algorithm, and Firefly Algorithm. However, most of these existing algorithms have global knowledge, which is unrealistic for some real-world complex systems such as underground mining and spacecraft trajectory. To bridge this gap, this article develops and presents a new biologically inspired optimization algorithm, the Sandpiper …

Big Data As A National Security Issue, Paul B. Stephan Iii
Big Data As A National Security Issue, Paul B. Stephan Iii
University of Chicago Legal Forum
Modern enhancements of data mining have unfolded in a legal near-vacuum. No extant legal system adequately specifies the property rights in the information elements that make up big data. The miners rely on their technical ability to gather and exploit, without waiting to confirm their entitlement to do so. Innovators have tolerated the legal vacuum because, as a practical matter, most potentially valuable information is accessible. Information by its nature implies a sender and a recipient. This sharing relationship necessarily complicates ownership, in particular the power to exclude. At the same time, the capacities that the mining of big data …

Deeper Magic: Theology Of The Body In C. S. Lewis And John Paul Ii, George French
Deeper Magic: Theology Of The Body In C. S. Lewis And John Paul Ii, George French
Sehnsucht: The C. S. Lewis Journal
C. S. Lewis tells us that science and magic are “twins.” “They were born,” he says “of the same impulse”3 of man to master the natural world. We think of them very differently because science has succeeded where magic has failed, but that should not make us blind to their “strong family likeness.”4 Science and magic are intertwined for much of their history, and it is in the Enlightenment that the two begin to separate. While magic died and science survived, Lewis thinks that modern applied science still retains much of the “family likeness.” Unfortunately, not all of the family …

One Dominant Age: The Technological Singularity In The Abolition Of Man, Christopher Tissell
Sehnsucht: The C. S. Lewis Journal
I doubt whether we are sufficiently attentive to the importance of the third part of C. S. Lewis’s The Abolition of Man. Much ink has been spilled analyzing Lewis’s thoughts on the dangers of subjectivism as outlined in the first two parts of the book, but less so on the endpoint to which Lewis thinks subjectivism leads when whole societies succumb to it. Yet Lewis himself, or at least his editor, thought the final part important enough to name the lecture series after it, and dramatize it in a novel afterward. If Lewis saw the train leaving the station over …

Exploration Of Energy Efficient Location Based Routing Protocols For Wireless Sensor Networks, Huthiafa Q. Qadori, Idris Abubakar Umar, Mohammed Khalaf
Iraqi Journal for Computer Science and Mathematics
Few routing protocols designed for wireless sensor networks (WSN) have been adopted for commercial use in today's technology. This is because when designing the protocols, there is a need to trade-off some features to improve others, but for some designs, these compromises are deemed adamant especially when resources are constrained. An Ideal sensor node is expected to have a small code size capable of coordinating communication activities with the least energy possible. This survey studies some energy-efficient location-based routing protocols that were proposed over the years, with a key interest in factors influencing energy utilization, as it is the most …

Oppenauer-type oxidations are catalyzed by air- and moisture-stable, sustainable, (cyclopentadienone)iron carbonyl compounds, but the substrate scope is limited due to the low reduction potential of acetone, which is the most commonly used hydrogen acceptor. We discovered that furfural, an aldehyde derived from cellulosic biomass, is an effective hydrogen acceptor with this class of catalysts. In general, reactions using furfural as the hydrogen acceptor led to higher isolated yields of ketones and aldehydes compared to those using acetone. Importantly, primary benzylic and allylic alcohols─typically a challenging class of alcohols to oxidize with these catalysts─could be oxidized. The selectivity for primary vs …
