In this article we analyze the fine structure of the essential extensions of an object of W, the category of divisible archimedean lattice ordered groups with designated weak units. In particular, we show that an object Ghas an ordinally indexed sequence {ταG}δG of essential extensions with the following features. τ0G is (isomorphic to) the identity function on G.
• For every α>0, ταG is an essential extension of G into a W-object which is of the form RLfor some frame L, and which is λ-replete for some λ.
• Every such …

Karbala International Journal of Modern Science
The viral disease affects the whiteleg shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) and causes losses. Immunostimulants are recognized as a more environmentally friendly approach to disease management and antimicrobial properties of aquatic organisms. Watercress (Nasturtium officinale) is an aquatic plant species that contains antioxidant properties that can protect the organism from disease and boost the immune system. Shrimp rely heavily on innate immunity to combat infectious agents due to their absence of adaptive immunity. Peroxinectin and scavenger receptor class B (SRB) play essential roles in the shrimp defense system. This research employs a bioinformatic to assess the immunostimulatory potential …

Empowering Teaching And Learning With Educational Technology: Literature Review, Suijing Yang, Daniel Taylor-Griffiths, Fabienne Van Der Kleij, Pauline Taylor-Guy, Ralph Saubern
Digital learning research
Many existing reviews of educational technologies focus on the affordances of specific types of technology rather than how different technologies can be designed and used to achieve specific teaching and learning objectives. Furthermore, there appears to be a widely held assumption that the use of educational technology will result in improved outcomes. However, there has been limited scrutiny of evidence about the extent to which use of educational technologies impacts teaching and learning outcomes in school contexts. To address these gaps in understanding of educational technologies, this literature review examines the design of technologies, exploring how they have been leveraged …

Quantifying Dust Nutrient Mobility Through An Alpine Watershed, Jeffrey R. Nielson, Janice Brahney
Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications
Dust has the potential to play a significant role in the nutrient dynamics of alpine watersheds with important ecological implications. However, little is known about how dust nutrients circulate through the environment and which watershed characteristics facilitate dust impacts on water quality. This study explored the contribution of dust-deposited nutrients, focusing on a high-elevation Long Term Ecological Research site, where dust samples have been continuously collected since 2017. We incorporated observed dust nutrient compositions, including fractions of inorganic and organic nitrogen and phosphorus, into a popular hydrological model, the Soil and Water Assessment Tool, and ran simulations for 2019–2021. Travel to and from distant cancer treatment facilities can place a significant burden on cancer patients, particularly rural and minority survivors. Thus, the purpose of our investigation was to examine the association between patient travel distance and delays in types of treatment for breast cancer (surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, and hormonal therapy) and treatment delays. Using a novel linkage between the state cancer registry and administrative data from Medicaid and a private insurance plan, 2155 BC patients were successfully linked to create the cohort. ArcGIS was used to geocode all case residences and treatment facility addresses and calculate network distance between …

Exploring Spatial Structure Effect On Modeling Spatial Interaction, Engdawork Desta
The Geographical Bulletin
Measuring the relative importance of locations and accounting for the influence of spatial structure are important considerations in spatial interaction modeling. To determine the volume of attracted and/ or generated flows between interacting locations, different formulations of a gravity model are used. In a system of interaction space, whether it is origins, destinations or both, that should be appraised is still not resolved . The exercise in this paper employs various tracks of the gravity model to evaluate the influence of spatial structure on spatial interaction. The conclusion reached does not fully support the findings of similar previous works. The …

Study On Ratio Of Cutting Height To Caving Height For Efficient Top-Coal Recovery In Extra Thick And Gently Inclined Coal Seam – A Case Study Of Seam 7 Ha Lam Coal Mine, Vietnam, Duc Hung Pham, Tien Dung Le, Phi Hung Nguyen, Van Quan Pham
Journal of Sustainable Mining
The mechanized longwall top-coal caving technology (LTCC) has been used in Quang Ninh underground coal mines owned by Vietnam National Coal – Mineral Industries Holding Corporation Limited (Vinacomin). The application of the LTCC technology has achieved significant achievements, contributing to the production of coal for national economy development. The use of LTCC has shown that the top-coal recovery efficiency is directly affected by the sequence of top coal drawing, ratio of cutting height to caving height, and caving span. These parameters, especially for extracting thick and gently inclined coal seam conditions as in the Quang Ninh coal field, have not …

Continuing Discrimination In The Times Of Technology: Women, Work, Algorithms And Law In India, Sejal Chandak Ms
Indian Journal of Law and Technology
Human societies are discriminatory. So, it has been an unrelenting effort to eliminate what divides us. While there have been leapfrog developments in this regard, we need to consider newer challenges now that technology is taking over public and private spaces. The author, in this article, discusses gender-based algorithmic discrimination in workplaces and argues that there is an urgent need to enforce laws for regulating algorithmic discrimination. India is in a precarious position. It has been consistently faring poorly when it comes to the gender gap in work. It lacks a comprehensive and codified anti-discriminatory law; and lacks laws to …

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research
The Tibetan Plateau, known as the “Asian water tower,” is a hotspot for complex hydroclimatic changes. We reveal that the previously decreasing atmospheric evaporative demand (Eo) trend at the end of the 20th century has reversed over the last two decades. Although both wind stilling and solar dimming have persisted, their effects on Eo rates have been overshadowed by increasing air temperatures and decreasing relative humidity, leading to a net rise in Eo for 1980−2015. Using the empirical “top-down” Budyko approach, we estimate that across seven sub-catchments draining the Tibetan Plateau, a 10% increase in annual-averaged …
The Economics And Productivity Of Us Cow-Calf Production, Richard Nehring, Hannah Shear, Kelvin L. Leibold, Andrew Swanson
The Economics And Productivity Of Us Cow-Calf Production, Richard Nehring, Hannah Shear, Kelvin L. Leibold, Andrew Swanson
Journal of Applied Farm Economics
We explore US beef cow-calf production in 2018 and estimate net returns, returns to scale, and technical efficiency associated with backgrounding versus nonbackgrounding by size and production system. We determine the relative profitability of cow-calf operations by type, region, and size. Results, using both stochastic production frontier analysis and data envelopment analysis, indicate that larger operations tend to be more scale and technically efficient than smaller operations. While larger operations may be more scale and technically efficient and have lower variable costs per cow, off-farm income helps smaller operations become competitive. The availability of detailed cost of production information in …

Comparison Of Two Strategies Of Screening Experiments: Single-Shot Experiment Vs. Two-Stage Screening Experiment, Kelvin Njuki, Emil Agbemade
Comparison Of Two Strategies Of Screening Experiments: Single-Shot Experiment Vs. Two-Stage Screening Experiment, Kelvin Njuki, Emil Agbemade
Data Science and Data Mining
Experiments involving many factors are often complex, time-consuming, and expensive. Screening out the least important factors helps the experimenter(s) allocate the limited resources efciently to the most important factors. Supersaturated and orthogonal array designs are among the designs used to conduct screening experiments. Supersaturated designs (SSDs) are those where the number of runs (observations) is less than the number of factors, while orthogonal array (OA) designs are those where at least the columns are orthogonal to each other. In this study, we conduct a simulation study to compare two strategies of screening experiments. Strategy one is a single shot experiment …
The Future Of Stealth Military Doctrine, Theodoros G. Kostis
The Future Of Stealth Military Doctrine, Theodoros G. Kostis
Joint Force Quarterly
This article explores the future of stealth military doctrine and argues that conventional stealth, centered on reducing radar cross-section and other detectable signatures, faces growing limitations against advanced integrated air defense systems. The author proposes shifting from a model based primarily on high speed and low observability toward one that emphasizes surprise through obfuscation. Central to this approach is the stand-in variable speed multiple-domain (SiVSMD) offensive concept, which combines artificial intelligence, autonomous unmanned systems, swarm tactics, miniaturization, electronic warfare, cyber capabilities, deception, and mosaic warfare. Small, distributed platforms would operate across land, sea, undersea, and air domains, varying their speed …

The Secret Sauce: Examining Law Schools That Overperform On The Bar Exam, Christopher J. Ryan Jr., Derek T. Muller
The Secret Sauce: Examining Law Schools That Overperform On The Bar Exam, Christopher J. Ryan Jr., Derek T. Muller
Florida Law Review
Since 2010, law schools have faced declining enrollment and entering classes with lower predictors of success despite recent signs of improvement. At least partly as a result, rates at which law school graduates pass the bar exam have declined and remain at historic lows. Yet, during this time, many schools have improved their graduates’ chances of success on the bar exam, and some schools have dramatically outperformed their predicted bar exam passage rates. This Article examines which schools do so and why. Research for this Article began by accounting for law schools’ incoming class credentials to predict an expected bar …

Breaking Barriers: Investigating Gender Dynamics In Introductory Physics Lab Classes, Bilas Paul, Shantanu Chakraborty, Ganga Sharma
Georgia Journal of Science
The persistent underrepresentation of women and other gender minorities in physical science fields has been an ongoing concern. This study investigates gender dynamics in introductory physics laboratory courses, focusing on whether students of different gender identities exhibit equal inclination and confidence in conducting lab experiments, and whether they face barriers that impact their participation. Conducted across three institutions and involving non-physics STEM students enrolled in algebra-based and calculus-based physics courses, the study found mixed results, with two institutions showing no significant gender-based differences in participation levels during lab activities, while one institution demonstrated significant differences. Chi-square tests revealed no significant …

Forecasting The Volatility Of Energy Transition Metals, Andrea Bastianin, Xiao Li, Ahmad Luqman Shamsudin
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
The transition to a cleaner energy mix, essential for achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, will significantly increase demand for metals critical to renewable energy technologies. Energy Transition Metals (ETMs), including copper, lithium, nickel, cobalt, and rare earth elements, are indispensable for renewable energy generation and the electrification of global economies. However, their markets are characterized by high price volatility due to supply concentration, low substitutability, and limited price elasticity. This paper provides a comprehensive analysis of the price volatility of ETMs, a subset of Critical Raw Materials (CRMs). Using a combination of exploratory data analysis, data reduction, and …

Pesticide Runoff From Conventional, Minimum, And No-Tillage Cropping Systems: Meta-Analysis Of Published North American Data, Daniel Fleming, Dave Spencer, Chicot Irrigation
WRRI Publications
Pesticide applications may soon be regulated by laws predicated on the presupposition that reducing tillage, and thereby increasing soil surface crop residue cover, decreases sorbed and soluble agrochemical losses in surface runoff and erosion. This analysis was conducted to determine whether pesticide transport via surface runoff and erosion could be manipulated by tillage practices. Estimates of the amounts of crop residue cover within each tillage practice were averaged from data reported in the original articles. Response ratios of the paired means of runoff, erosion, and pesticide losses and concentrations from the effects of tillage practices were meta-analyzed as paired t-tests …
