Latina/O Gender And Sexuality, Deena J. González, Ellie D. Hernández Jan 2016

Latina/O Gender And Sexuality, Deena J. González, Ellie D. Hernández

History Faculty Scholarship

Gender and sexuality among US Latina/o populations encompass a continuum of experiences, historical, cultural, religious, and lived. Gender and sexuality varied by culture or ethnicity and by era across the many different Latino populations descended from Latin Americans. Latino national histories, born inside the thirty-three different Latin American countries in existence today, are united in one irrefutable link to the conquest, by Spain. The Spanish and Portuguese warred against many indigenous empires, towns, and communities encountered in 1519, and the wars continued subsequently into the 1800s, during the colonization of the Americas by other countries, including the United States.

Electronic Structure And Stability Of The Ch3Nh3Pbbr3 (001) Surface, Xin Huang, Tula R. Paudel, Peter A. Dowben, Shuai Dong, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal

Evgeny Tsymbal Publications

The energetics and the electronic structure of methylammonium lead bromine (CH3NH3PbBr3) perovskite (001) surfaces are studied based on density functional theory. By examining the surface grand potential, we predict that the CH3NH3Br-terminated (001) surface is energetically more favorable than the PbBr2-terminated (001) surface, under thermodynamic equilibrium conditions of bulk CH3NH3PbBr3. The electronic structure of each of these two different surface terminations retains some of the characteristics of the bulk, while new surface states are found near band edges which may affect the …

Band Structure And Spin Texture Of Bi2Se3 3D Ferromagnetic Metal Interface, Jia Zhang, Julian P. Velev, Xiaoqian Dang, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal

Evgeny Tsymbal Publications

The spin-helical surface states in a three-dimensional topological insulator (TI), such as Bi2Se3, are predicted to have superior efficiency in converting charge current into spin polarization. This property is said to be responsible for the giant spin-orbit torques observed in ferromagnetic metal/TI structures. In this work, using first-principles and model tight-binding calculations, we investigate the interface between the topological insulator Bi2Se3 and 3d-transition ferromagnetic metals Ni and Co. We find that the difference in the work functions of the topological insulator and the ferromagnetic metals shift the topological surface states down about 0.5 …

Enhanced Tunneling Electroresistance In Ferroelectric Tunnel Junctions Due To The Reversible Metallization Of The Barrier, Xiaohui Liu, J. D. Burton, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal Jan 2016

Enhanced Tunneling Electroresistance In Ferroelectric Tunnel Junctions Due To The Reversible Metallization Of The Barrier, Xiaohui Liu, J. D. Burton, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal

Evgeny Tsymbal Publications

Realizing a large tunneling electroresistance (TER) effect is crucial for device application of ferroelectric tunnel junctions (FTJs). FTJs are typically composed of a thin ferroelectric layer sandwiched by two metallic electrodes, where TER generally results from the dependence of the effective tunneling barrier height on the ferroelectric polarization. Since the resistance depends exponentially not only on barrier height but also on barrier width, TER is expected to be greatly enhanced when one of the electrodes is a semiconductor where the depletion region near the interface can be controlled via ferroelectric polarization. To explore this possibility, we perform studies of SrRuO …

Cascade Control Of A Hydraulic Prosthetic Knee, Xin Hui Jan 2016

Cascade Control Of A Hydraulic Prosthetic Knee, Xin Hui

ETD Archive

A leg prosthesis test robot with hydraulic knee actuator is modeled and tested with closed loop control simulation. A cascade control architecture is designed for the system, the outer loop is controlled by a robust passivity-based controller (RPBC) and the inner loop is controlled by an optimization method. The control algorithm provides knee angle tracking with an RMS error of 0.07 degrees. The research contributes to the field of prosthetics by showing that it is possible to find effective closed loop control algorithm for a newly proposed hydraulic knee prosthesis. The simulations demonstrate the efficiency of RPBC's ability to control …

Modified Electrodes With Grafted Dna And Oligonucleotides For Detection And Quantification Of Peroxynitrate, Heba Azmy Salim Jan 2016

Modified Electrodes With Grafted Dna And Oligonucleotides For Detection And Quantification Of Peroxynitrate, Heba Azmy Salim

ETD Archive

Peroxynitrite (ONOO-) is a strong oxidizing and nitrating agent, and its formation has been correlated with many pathological conditions. It is generated in-vivo through the diffusion-controlled reaction between nitric oxide and superoxide. Peroxynitrite has been linked to nitration of protein and DNA as well as to DNA strand breaks. Accumulation of mutations and/or other kinds of DNA damage represent a carcinogenic risk. The accurate measurement of peroxynitrite concentration has been a challenge since this analyte is very unstable and reacts with many cellular targets. Development of analytical techniques capable of rapid and sensitive detection of this fast-reacting and damaging agent …

Pure And Binary Adsorption Of Methane And Nitrogen On Silicalite, Prahar S. Vaidya Jan 2016

Pure And Binary Adsorption Of Methane And Nitrogen On Silicalite, Prahar S. Vaidya

ETD Archive

Separation processes comprise a large portion of the activity in the chemical and petrochemical industries. For the chemical, petroleum refining, and materials processing industries as a group, separation processes are considered to be critical. Almost all the applications of chemical industries involves mixtures, so innovation in separation technology not only enhances productivity and global competitiveness of U.S. industries, but is also critical for achieving the industrial energy and waste reduction goals. Traditionally, air separation to produce nitrogen and oxygen and to separate nitrogen from methane was practiced by cryogenic distillation, which involved expensive high pressure units and large requirement of …

Experimental Investigation Of Turbulent Flow Induced By New-Generation Wind Fences With Multi-Scale Fractal Structure, Sarah M. Mcclure Jan 2016

Experimental Investigation Of Turbulent Flow Induced By New-Generation Wind Fences With Multi-Scale Fractal Structure, Sarah M. Mcclure

ETD Archive

Understanding and controlling atmospheric boundary-layer flows with engineered structures, such as porous wind fences or windbreaks, has been of great interest to the fluid mechanics and wind engineering community. Previous studies found that the regular mono-scale grid fence of 50% porosity and a bottom gap of 10% of the fence height are considered to be optimal over a flat surface. Significant differences in turbulent flow structure have recently been noted behind multi-scale fractal wind fences, even with the same porosity. In this study, wind-tunnel tests on the turbulent flow and the turbulence kinetic energy transport of 1D and 2D multi-scale …

Profiling Cell Surface Sialylation And Desialylation Dynamics Of Immune Cells, Dan Wang Jan 2016

Profiling Cell Surface Sialylation And Desialylation Dynamics Of Immune Cells, Dan Wang

ETD Archive

Sialic acids (SAs) are a diverse family of naturally occurring 2-keto-3-deoxy-nononic acids that are involved in a wide range of biological processes, including early fetal development, cellular recognition, and utilization by microbes. While it is clear that cell surface SAs are highly involved in the immune system, the sialylation status of individual immune cells and functions are still unknown. In this study, I combined the newly developed LC-MS/MS methods with flow cytometry and confocal microscopy to systematically study the sialylation and desialylation dynamics of macrophages at different conditions.

First, I developed an accurate LC-MS/MS method to quantify free SA in …

Organizational And Systems Factors Leading To Systems Integration Success After Merger And Acquisition, Monika Glazar-Stavnicky Jan 2016

Organizational And Systems Factors Leading To Systems Integration Success After Merger And Acquisition, Monika Glazar-Stavnicky

ETD Archive

Mergers and acquisitions (M&A) are a common technique used by companies to grow and enter new markets. The success rate of these transactions continues to be less than desired. Information Systems (IS) have been proven to be a key component influencing the success of mergers. While numerous factors have been found to lead to systems integration success, the studies have not analyzed the fit that is required when two organizations and systems are joined. This research focuses on the match between organizational variables of competencies and processes of two merging companies, as well as the match between systems variables of …

The Role Of Rnase L In Type I Diabetes And Development Of Quantitative Lc-Ms/Ms Methods For The Pharmacological Studies Of Anti-Cancer Drug Candidates, Chun Zeng Jan 2016

The Role Of Rnase L In Type I Diabetes And Development Of Quantitative Lc-Ms/Ms Methods For The Pharmacological Studies Of Anti-Cancer Drug Candidates, Chun Zeng

ETD Archive

PROJECT I: The cause of type I diabetes continues to be a focus of investigation. In this study, we found that 2-5A dependent RNase L (RNase L), an IFN-a-inducible enzyme that functions in IFN action against viruses and cell proliferation, played an important role in dsRNA-induced onset of type I diabetes. By using RNase L deficient RIP-B7.1 mice which are more vulnerable to environmental harmful factors such as viral infection, we demonstrated that deficiency of RNase L in mice resulted in a significant delay of diabetes onset induced by polyinosinic:polycytidylic acid (poly I:C), a type of dsRNA, and streptozotocin (STZ). …

A Simulation And Experimental Study Of Active Disturbance Rejection For Industrial Pressure Control, Xiaoxu Li Jan 2016

A Simulation And Experimental Study Of Active Disturbance Rejection For Industrial Pressure Control, Xiaoxu Li

ETD Archive

The quality of control loop is very important in hydraulic machineries, where pressure must be accurately regulated in the presence of various disturbances. Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) control has dominated the industry for a long time and it is by far the most popular general purpose controller for pressure control. The purpose of this study is to conduct a simulation and experimental study comparing PID with an emerging new technology, namely active disturbance rejection control (ADRC). For the purpose of this study, an experimental testbed similar to those used in industry settings is used; its mathematic model is derived and used in …

The Behavior Of Simply Supported Plates Under Extreme Shear Loading, Mhd Ammar Hafez Jan 2016

The Behavior Of Simply Supported Plates Under Extreme Shear Loading, Mhd Ammar Hafez

ETD Archive

Steel plates are planar structural elements with one dimension significantly smaller than the others. These elements may fail due to either material yielding or buckling. Buckling is a sudden failure mode, which is not desirable in structural engineering applications. Buckling is called an “elastic buckling” when it happens before material yielding, and is termed as “plastic buckling” if it happens after material yielding. The focus of this thesis is on shear plates, which are plates that are primarily subjected to shear loads. Several studies were conducted to increase the elastic buckling capacity of plates by adding stiffeners to plates. However, …
