Spatial variation in marine oxygen isotope ratios ( δ18O) resulting from differential evaporation rates and precipitation inputs is potentially useful for characterizing marine mammal distributions and tracking movements across δ18O gradients. Dentine hydroxyapatite contains carbonate and phosphate that precipitate in oxygen isotopic equilibrium with body water, which in odontocetes closely tracks the isotopic composition of ambient water. To test whether dentine oxygen isotope composition reliably records that of ambient water and can therefore serve as a proxy for odontocete distribution and movement patterns, we measured δ18O values of dentine structural carbonate (δ18 …

South American camelids (llamas and alpacas) were of great economic, social and ritual significance in the pre-Hispanic Andes. Although these animals are largely limited to high-altitude (>3500 masl) pastures, it has been hypothesised that camelids were also raised at lower altitudes in the arid coastal river valleys. Previous isotopic studies of Early Intermediate Period (c. 200 BC - AD 600) and Middle Horizon (c. AD 600 - 1100) camelids support this argument. Here, we utilise carbon and nitrogen isotopic analyses of camelid bone collagen from the Early Horizon (c. 800 - 200 BC) sites of Caylán and Huambacho on …

Microplastics contamination of Lake Ontario sediments is investigated with the aim of identifying distribution patterns and hotspots in nearshore, tributary and beach depositional environments. Microplastics are concentrated in nearshore sediments in the vicinity of urban and industrial regions. InHumber Bay and Toronto Harbour microplastic concentrations were consistently greater than 500 particles per kg dry sediment. Maximum concentrations of ~28,000 particles per kg dry sediment were determined in Etobicoke Creek. The microplastic particles were primarily fibres and fragments less than 2 mm in size. Both low- and high-density plastics were identified using Raman spectroscopy. We provide a baseline for future monitoring …

The Gowganda Formation of the 2.45–2.2 Ga Huronian Supergroup contains glacially-induced, varve-like rhythmites that potentially preserve a detailed record of climatic conditions during the Paleoproterozoic Era. Four rhythmic couplet thickness records were measured at two outcrops near Wharncliffe, Ontario for the purpose of time-series analysis. The couplets, which range from 1 to 32 mm thick, are composed of alternating layers of siltstone and claystone. Time-series analysis of the couplet thickness records using the MTM Toolkit of Mann and Lees (1996) consistently revealed periodicities in the range of 2.2–2.9 couplets per cycle, which is consistent with climatic cycles such as the …

Determining the process of silicification in silcretes is essential to understanding their environmental significance. For the late Paleocene silcretes of the Anglo-Paris basin this is of particular interest due to their association with the PETM (Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum). Here puddingstone samples from Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire have been examined by optical, BSEM and CL petrography, X-ray diffraction and oxygen isotope analysis. The range of quartz sand luminescence colours indicates a diverse provenance. Flint pebbles show little variability, consistent with a single source. The oxygen isotope compositional range of the flint pebbles is consistent with chemical sedimentation at normal temperatures from Cretaceous …

The rise of molecular plasmonics and its application to ultrasensitive spectroscopic measurements has been enabled by the rational design and fabrication of a variety of metallic nanostructures. Advanced nano and microfabrication methods are key to the development of such structures, allowing one to tailor optical fields at the sub-wavelength scale, thereby optimizing excitation conditions for ultrasensitive detection. In this work, the control of both analyte and cell positioning on a plasmonic platform is enabled using nanofabrication methods involving patterning of fluorocarbon (FC) polymer (C

Functional magnetic resonance imaging at 7.0 Tesla was undertaken among Schizophrenia participants (Sz), and clinical (major mood disorder; MDD) and healthy controls (HC), during performance of the Stoop task. Stroop conditions included congruent and incongruent word color items, color-only items, and word-only items. Previous modeling results extended to this most widely used selective-attention task. All groups executed item-encoding operations (subprocesses of the item encoding process) at the same rate (performance accuracy being similarly high throughout), thus displaying like processing capacity; Sz participants, however, employed more subprocesses for item completions than did the MDD participants, who in turn used more subprocesses …

Manipulatives—including the more recent touch-screen mobile device apps—belong to a broader network of learning tools. As teachers continue to search for learning materials that aid children to think mathematically, they are faced with a challenge of how to select materials that meet the needs of students. The profusion of virtual learning tools available via the Internet magnifies this challenge. What criteria could teachers use when choosing useful manipulatives? In this chapter, we share an evaluation instrument for teachers to use to evaluate apps. The dimensions of the instrument include: (a) the nature of the curriculum addressed in the app— emergent, …

An Inquiry Into How Principals Make Decisions In Secondary Schools, Stacy L. Mason
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Principals are decision makers (Hoy & Miskel, 2001; Lunenburg, 2010). Daily decisions are made along a wide spectrum of issues all of which impact students in some way, shape, or form (Wiseman, 2005). Principals must consider all stakeholders in all decisions made and bear in mind what is in the best interest of students (Queen & Queen, 2005). The purpose of this study was to ascertain if leadership style, mindset, and self-efficacy impacted principal decision making. A quantitative study was conducted to determine if relationships existed between the predictor variables of leadership style, mindset, self-efficacy, gender, years of experience, or …

Totally Isotropic Subspaces Of Small Height In Quadratic Spaces, Wai Kiu Chan, Lenny Fukshansky, Glenn Henshaw
CMC Faculty Publications and Research
Let K be a global field or Q, F a nonzero quadratic form on KN , N ≥ 2, and V a subspace of KN . We prove the existence of an infinite collection of finite families of small-height maximal totally isotropic subspaces of (V, F) such that each such family spans V as a K-vector space. This result generalizes and extends a well known theorem of J. Vaaler [16] and further contributes to the effective study of quadratic forms via height in the general spirit of Cassels’ theorem on small zeros of quadratic forms. All bounds on height are …

Building A History Of Horizontal Gene Transfer In E. Coli, Matthew Wilber
Building A History Of Horizontal Gene Transfer In E. Coli, Matthew Wilber
HMC Senior Theses
Bacteria's ability to pass entire genes between one another, a process called Horizontal Gene Transfer (HGT), has a major impact on bacterial evolution. In an ongoing project at Harvey Mudd, computational methods have been used to catalogue the HGT events that have impacted a group of closely related bacteria.
This thesis builds on that project, by improving our ability to identify gene families --- groups of genes in different strains that are related. Previously, similarity was measured only by comparing two genes' DNA sequences, ignoring their positions on the organism's DNA. Here, we leverage genes' relative position to make a …
The Geometry Of Data: Distance On Data Manifolds, Casey Chu
The Geometry Of Data: Distance On Data Manifolds, Casey Chu
HMC Senior Theses
The increasing importance of data in the modern world has created a need for new mathematical techniques to analyze this data. We explore and develop the use of geometry—specifically differential geometry—as a means for such analysis, in two parts. First, we provide a general framework to discover patterns contained in time series data using a geometric framework of assigning distance, clustering, and then forecasting. Second, we attempt to define a Riemannian metric on the space containing the data in order to introduce a notion of distance intrinsic to the data, providing a novel way to probe the data for insight.

Steady State Solutions For A System Of Partial Differential Equations Arising From Crime Modeling, Bo Li
HMC Senior Theses
I consider a model for the control of criminality in cities. The model was developed during my REU at UCLA. The model is a system of partial differential equations that simulates the behavior of criminals and where they may accumulate, hot spots. I have proved a prior bounds for the partial differential equations in both one-dimensional and higher dimensional case, which proves the attractiveness and density of criminals in the given area will not be unlimitedly high. In addition, I have found some local bifurcation points in the model.
Topological Data Analysis For Systems Of Coupled Oscillators, Alec Dunton
Topological Data Analysis For Systems Of Coupled Oscillators, Alec Dunton
HMC Senior Theses
Coupled oscillators, such as groups of fireflies or clusters of neurons, are found throughout nature and are frequently modeled in the applied mathematics literature. Earlier work by Kuramoto, Strogatz, and others has led to a deep understanding of the emergent behavior of systems of such oscillators using traditional dynamical systems methods. In this project we outline the application of techniques from topological data analysis to understanding the dynamics of systems of coupled oscillators. This includes the examination of partitions, partial synchronization, and attractors. By looking for clustering in a data space consisting of the phase change of oscillators over a …
Line-Of-Sight Pursuit And Evasion Games On Polytopes In R^N, John Phillpot
Line-Of-Sight Pursuit And Evasion Games On Polytopes In R^N, John Phillpot
HMC Senior Theses
We study single-pursuer, line-of-sight Pursuit and Evasion games in polytopes in $\mathbb{R}^n$. We develop winning Pursuer strategies for simple classes of polytopes (monotone prisms) in Rn, using proven algorithms for polygons as inspiration and as subroutines. More generally, we show that any Pursuer-win polytope can be extended to a new Pursuer-win polytope in more dimensions. We also show that some more general classes of polytopes (monotone products) do not admit a deterministic winning Pursuer strategy. Though we provide bounds on which polytopes are Pursuer-win, these bounds are not tight. Closing the gap between those polytopes known to be …
Fibonomial Tilings And Other Up-Down Tilings, Robert Bennett
Fibonomial Tilings And Other Up-Down Tilings, Robert Bennett
HMC Senior Theses
The Fibonomial coefficients are a generalization of the binomial coefficients with a rather nice combinatorial interpretation. While the ordinary binomial coefficients count lattice paths in a grid, the Fibonomial coefficients count the number of ways to draw a lattice path in a grid and then Fibonacci-tile the regions above and below the path in a particular way. We may forgo a literal tiling interpretation and, instead of the Fibonacci numbers, use an arbitrary function to count the number of ways to "tile" the regions of the grid delineated by the lattice path. When the function is a combinatorial sequence such …
Adinkras And Arithmetical Graphs, Madeleine Weinstein
Adinkras And Arithmetical Graphs, Madeleine Weinstein
HMC Senior Theses
Adinkras and arithmetical graphs have divergent origins. In the spirit of Feynman diagrams, adinkras encode representations of supersymmetry algebras as graphs with additional structures. Arithmetical graphs, on the other hand, arise in algebraic geometry, and give an arithmetical structure to a graph. In this thesis, we will interpret adinkras as arithmetical graphs and see what can be learned.
Our work consists of three main strands. First, we investigate arithmetical structures on the underlying graph of an adinkra in the specific case where the underlying graph is a hypercube. We classify all such arithmetical structures and compute some of the corresponding …

We consider the set of all linear combinations with integer coefficients of the vectors of a unit tight equiangular (k,n) frame and are interested in the question whether this set is a lattice, that is, a discrete additive subgroup of the k-dimensional Euclidean space. We show that this is not the case if the cosine of the angle of the frame is irrational. We also prove that the set is a lattice for n = k + 1 and that there are infinitely many k such that a lattice emerges for n = 2k …

Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Building upon experiences from past course offering,1 several universities across the United States (U.S) have incorporated a critical infrastructure educational game platform as a unifying platform to integrate different disciplines to a common goal. The critical infrastructure backbones of the world provide the delivery mechanisms for energy and other utilities that provide the lifestyle we have come to expect in our society. As these critical infrastructure systems have evolved, the complexity of their integration has generated numerous challenges as a side effect of increased automation that are more pronounced as the infrastructure ages. Although still a modern technological wonder, …

This paper describes how the College of Engineering at Boise State University utilized a National Science Foundation S-STEM award from 2011 to 2016 to support transfer students in their path toward graduation. The need for this support was a result of both Boise State University College of Engineering’s transition from a 2-year pre-engineering program to the establishment of Bachelors of Science in Engineering Degree programs in 1997 as well as the establishment of the College of Western Idaho as a regional community college in 2007. Both of these factors led to an increase in the numbers of incoming engineering students …

Government agencies in the United States eradicated 10.3 million cannabis plants in 2010. Most (94%) of these plants were outdoor-grown, and 46% of those were discovered on federal lands, primarily on national forests in California, Oregon, and Washington. We developed models that reveal how drug markets, policies, and environmental conditions affect grow siting decisions. The models were built on a rational choice theoretical structure, and utilized data describing 2322 cannabis grow locations (2004–2012) and 9324 absence locations in the states' national forests. Predictor variables included cannabis market prices, law enforcement density, and socioeconomic, demographic, and environmental variables. We also used the …

Riparian Trees And Aridland Streams Of The Southwestern United States: An Assessment Of The Past, Present, And Future, D. Max Smith, Deborah M. Finch
United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Riparian ecosystems are vital components of aridlands within the southwestern United States. Historically, surface flows influenced population dynamics of native riparian trees. Many southwestern streams has been altered by regulation, however, and will be further affected by greenhouse warming. Our analysis of stream gage data revealed that decreases in volume of annual discharge and mean peak discharge and a shift to earlier peak discharge will occur in the Southern Rockies region of Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah. These changes will likely decrease rates of reproduction and survival of cottonwood (Populus fremontii and Populus deltoides ssp. wislizenii), Goodding's willow …
