Upward, Not Sunwise, Kimberly Jenkins Marshall Jan 2016

Upward, Not Sunwise, Kimberly Jenkins Marshall

University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters

Upward, Not Sunwise explores an influential and growing neo-Pentecostal movement among Native Americans characterized by evangelical Christian theology, charismatic “spirit-filled” worship, and decentralized Native control. As in other global contexts, neo-Pentecostalism is spread by charismatic evangelists practicing faith healing at tent revivals. In North America, this movement has become especially popular among the Diné (Navajo), where the Oodlání (“Believers”) movement now numbers nearly sixty thousand members. Participants in this movement value their Navajo cultural identity yet maintain a profound religious conviction that the beliefs of their ancestors are tools of the devil.

Kimberly Jenkins Marshall has been researching the Oodlání movement …

Coastal Development And Precipitation Drive Pathogen Flow From Land To Sea: Evidence From A Toxoplasma Gondii And Felid Host System, Elizabeth Vanwormer, Tim E. Carpenter, Purnendu Singh, Karen Shapiro, Wesley W. Wallender, Patricia A. Conrad, John L. Largier, Marco P. Maneta, Jonna A. K. Mazet

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Rapidly developing coastal regions face consequences of land use and climate change including flooding and increased sediment, nutrient, and chemical runoff, but these forces may also enhance pathogen runoff, which threatens human, animal, and ecosystem health. Using the zoonotic parasite Toxoplasma gondii in California, USA as a model for coastal pathogen pollution, we examine the spatial distribution of parasite runoff and the impacts of precipitation and development on projected pathogen delivery to the ocean. Oocysts, the extremely hardy free-living environmental stage of T. gondii shed in faeces of domestic and wild felids, are carried to the ocean by freshwater runoff. …

Aptitude And Trait Predictors Of Manned And Unmanned Aircraft Pilot Job Performance, Laura Barron, Thomas R. Carretta, Mark R. Rose Jan 2016

Aptitude And Trait Predictors Of Manned And Unmanned Aircraft Pilot Job Performance, Laura Barron, Thomas R. Carretta, Mark R. Rose

United States Air Force: Publications

Previous research has shown that the same aptitude and trait measures that predict success in US Air Force (USAF) manned aircraft pilot training predict remotely-piloted aircraft (RPA) pilot training outcomes with generally similar levels of validity (Carretta, 2013; Rose, Barron, Carretta, Arnold, & Howse, 2014). However, because USAF RPA pilots initially train in manned aircraft, validation of aptitude and traits predicative of RPA pilot success has thus far been limited to RPA pilot training outcomes that actually require manned flight. Hence, thus far there has been no basis for determining the aptitudes and traits predictive of success in environments in …

Memory Forensic Data Recovery Utilising Ram Cooling Methods, Kedar Gupta, Alastair Nisbet Jan 2016

Memory Forensic Data Recovery Utilising Ram Cooling Methods, Kedar Gupta, Alastair Nisbet

Australian Digital Forensics Conference

Forensic investigations of digital devices is generally conducted on a seized device in a secure environment. This usually necessitates powering down the device and taking an image of the hard drive or semi-permanent storage in the case of solid state technology. Guidelines for forensic investigations of computers advise that the computer should be shut down by removing the power supply and thereby maintaining the hard disk in the state it was in whilst running. However, valuable forensic evidence often exists in the volatile memory which is lost when this process is followed. The issues of locked accounts on running computers …

Climate-Relevant Land Use And Land Cover Change Policies, Rezaul Mahmood, Roger A. Pielke Sr., Clive Mcalpine Jan 2016

Climate-Relevant Land Use And Land Cover Change Policies, Rezaul Mahmood, Roger A. Pielke Sr., Clive Mcalpine

High Plains Regional Climate Center: Staff Publications

Both observational and modeling studies clearly demonstrate that land-use and land-cover change (LULCC) play an important biogeophysical and biogeochemical role in the climate system from the landscape to regional and even continental scales. Without comprehensively considering these impacts, an adequate response to the threats posed by human intervention into the climate system will not be adequate. Public policy plays an important role in shaping local- to national-scale land-use practices. An array of national policies has been developed to influence the nature and spatial extent of LULCC. Observational evidence suggests that these policies, in addition to international trade treaties and protocols, …

Combining Body Mass And Shape Indices In Clinical Practice, Jesse C. Krakauer, Nir Y. Krakauer Jan 2016

Combining Body Mass And Shape Indices In Clinical Practice, Jesse C. Krakauer, Nir Y. Krakauer

Publications and Research

We present preliminary clinical experience with combined consideration of the commonly used BMI (body mass index) and the newly developed ABSI (a body shape index) using a point of care anthropometric calculator for comparisons of index values and associated relative risks to population normals. In a series of 282 patients, BMI and ABSI were close to being independently distributed, supporting the value of considering both indices. Three selected cases illustrate scenarios where assessment of ABSI together with BMI could inform patient care and counseling. These data suggest that combined assessment of BMI and ABSI may prove useful in clinical practice.

Eradicating Mass Spectrometric Glycan Rearrangement By Utilizing Free Radicals, Nikunj Desai, Daniel A. Thomas, Jungeun Lee, Jinshan Gao, Jesse L. Beauchamp Jan 2016

Eradicating Mass Spectrometric Glycan Rearrangement By Utilizing Free Radicals, Nikunj Desai, Daniel A. Thomas, Jungeun Lee, Jinshan Gao, Jesse L. Beauchamp

Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Mass spectrometric glycan rearrangement is problematic because it provides misleading structural information. Here we report on a new reagent, a methylated free radical activated glycan sequencing reagent (Me-FRAGS), which combines a free radical precursor with a methylated pyridine moiety that can be coupled to the reducing terminus of glycans. The collisional activation of Me-FRAGS-derivatized glycans generates a nascent free radical that concurrently induces abundant glycosidic bond and cross-ring cleavage without the need for subsequent activation. The product ions resulting from glycan rearrangement, including internal residue loss and multiple external residue losses, are precluded. Glycan structures can be easily assembled and …

New Approaches To Chalcogenide Materials For Thermoelectrics: Lead Telluride-Based Nanostructures And Facile Synthesis Of Tetrahedrite And Doped Derivatives, Derak Justin James

Wayne State University Dissertations

The overall purpose of this work is to address several of the roadblocks to use of thermoelectric materials for generation of electricity, namely inefficient processing of materials and low performance, commonly rated by the figure of merit, ZT=T2/tot. The ZT includes  as the Seebeck coefficient,  as electrical resistivity, T as the average temperature, and tot as total thermal conductivity. tot is the sum of electronic charge carrier (C) and lattice (L) contributions to thermal conductivity. Attempts to increase ZT in the literature to values >1 have focused on decreasing the thermal conductivity via nanostructuring or optimizing the electrical …

Computational Modeling Approaches For Task Analysis In Robotic-Assisted Surgery, Mahtab Jahanbani Fard Jan 2016

Understanding The Experiences Of A Group Of Yemeni Students In An Esl Science Class, Gihan Fradi

Wayne State University Dissertations

American classrooms are experiencing an influx of diverse language speaking students while for science educators the study of EBL students’ learning in science classrooms is a relatively new field (Lee & Buxton, 2010). At the same time there is a growing emphasis on the importance of science practices (NGSS). This poses significant challenges for science educators who are enacting science curriculum that supports all students’ learning. Supporting EBL students’ academic achievement is significant because literacy is important for students’ access to economic and social benefits that come with science literacy (Atwater, 1996).

The purpose of this study was to examine …

Technology Decisions In New Product Development, Amir Sanayei Jan 2016

Technology Decisions In New Product Development, Amir Sanayei

Wayne State University Dissertations

Selecting the right technology is one of the most important and challenging decisions in new product development (NPD) process that can greatly affect all downstream design activities which have a great impact on product success in the market place. Although new technologies may bring more competitive advantage by offering higher performance to price, they also make the NPD process more risky and challenging. We model the technology selection problem of a firm that is defining its new product in the presence of the technology uncertainty. At each review stage, firm has the options: select and commit to any technology alternatives …

Use Of 17o-Nmr Spectroscopy To Study The Coordination Chemistry Of Trivalent Lanthanide Ions In Solution, Zhijin Lin

Wayne State University Dissertations

Trivalent lanthanide (Ln3+)-containing complexes have a number of important applications in molecular imaging, catalysis, medical diagnosis, information storage, and environmental sensing. The properties of Ln3+-containing complexes that are useful for these applications are influenced by coordination chemistry, including the number of coordinated ligands and ligand-exchange rates. The coordination numbers for water molecules bound to Eu3+ and Tb3+ have been studied by luminescence-decay measurements; however, the coordination numbers of other important oxygen-containing functional groups such as ketones, esters, ethers, sulfonyls, amides, phosphine oxides, and aldehydes have not been as thoroughly studied in solution because of the lack of hydroxyl groups that …

Studying The Atp Cosubstrate Promiscuity Of Nucleotide And Lipid Kinases, Thilani Murium Anthony Jan 2016

Studying The Atp Cosubstrate Promiscuity Of Nucleotide And Lipid Kinases, Thilani Murium Anthony

Wayne State University Dissertations

The kinase family consist of a large assortment of enzymes that phosphorylate a variety of substrates, including proteins, nucleosides, polynucleotides, lipids, sugars, and other small molecules. The Pflum lab recently found that protein kinases promiscuously accept an ATP analog containing a biotin at the γ-phosphate (ATP-biotin) as a cosubstrate to label the hydroxyl side chains of Ser, Thr and Tyr residues with biotin. The main goal of this new project is to extend the use of kinase-catalyzed biotinylation towards polynucleotides. Crystallographic studies of T4 polynucleotide kinase (T4 PNK) that phosphorylates the 5’-hydroxyl termini of DNA and RNA show a solvent …

Optimal Control Of A Perturbed Sweeping Process With Applications To The Crowd Motion Model, Tan Hoang Cao Jan 2016

Optimal Control Of A Perturbed Sweeping Process With Applications To The Crowd Motion Model, Tan Hoang Cao

Wayne State University Dissertations

The dissertation is devoted to the study and applications of a new class of optimal control problems governed by a perturbed sweeping process of the hysteresis type with control functions acting in both play-and-stop operator and additive perturbations. Such control problems can be reduced to optimization of discontinuous and unbounded dif- ferential inclusions with pointwise state constraints, which are immensely challenging in control theory and prevent employing conventional variation techniques to derive neces- sary optimality conditions. We develop the method of discrete approximations married with appropriate generalized differential tools of modern variational analysis to overcome principal difficulties in passing to …

State Resolved Sliced Imaging Of Infrared Multiphoton Dissociation, Ravin Lakshitha Fernando Jan 2016

State Resolved Sliced Imaging Of Infrared Multiphoton Dissociation, Ravin Lakshitha Fernando

Wayne State University Dissertations

This dissertation focuses on unimolecular dissociations of molecules under colissionless conditions with IRMPD. IRMPD was used as the dissociation technique in these studies since roaming type dissociations predominates from the ground electronic state. DC slice imaging was used with REMPI as the detection technique to study the products in a state selective manner to understand the nano scale dynamics of unimolecular dissociations. In the investigation of photodissociation dynamics of nitromethane and methyl nitrite with IRMPD, nitromethane show very low translational energy release of the photofragments and resemble the “roaming” pathway in the dissociation of nitromethane. The difference in the intensities …

Synthesis Of Dinucleating Ligands And Their Dinuclear Metal Complxes:Applications In Sensing And Small Molecule Activation, Jeffrey William Beattie Jan 2016

Synthesis Of Dinucleating Ligands And Their Dinuclear Metal Complxes:Applications In Sensing And Small Molecule Activation, Jeffrey William Beattie

Wayne State University Dissertations

Dinuclear metal complexes provide a route to interesting structure and reactivity. Two common uses of dinuclear metal complexes are sensing and activation of small molecules. Herein we describe a series of dinuclear metal complexes capable of sensing of oxalate and activation of carbon disulfide.

Sensing of oxalate is of great interest because high oxalate concentration (hypooxaluria) is a major cause of kidney stones. Dinuclear metal complexes can act as sensors for oxalate because the oxalate can bridge between the metal centers. Herein we describe a colorimetric oxalate sensor capable of regeneration. Upon addition of oxalate to a pink solution of …
