Case Studies Of Cavity And External Wall Insulation Retrofitted Under The Irish Home Energy Saving Scheme: Technical Analysis And Occupant Perspectives, Aimee Byrne, Gerard Byrne, Garrett O'Donnell, Anthony Robinson

Articles

The residential sector represents 27% of primary energy consumption in Ireland. This paper examines the case study of the Irish government’s national grant scheme to encourage energy efficiency retrofit in private housing. That is the Home Energy Saving (HES) Scheme, later rebranded the Better Energy: Homes (BEH) Scheme. The methodology involved monitoring several homes immediately before and after retrofit alongside discussions with occupants. The examination focused on specific measures commonly introduced through the HES/BEH programme − cavity and external wall insulation. It has been found that a significant decrease in heat loss through the walls was measured in all cases. …

Biofilm Growth Kinetics And Nutrient (N/P) Adsorption In An Urban Lake Using Reclaimed Water: A Quantitative Baseline For Ecological Health Assessment, Tianzhi Wang, Zhenci Wu, Yunkai Li, Mingchao Liang, Zhenhua Wang, Paul Hynds

Articles

Reclaimed wastewater reuse represents an effective method for partial resolution of increasing urban water shortages; however, reclaimed water may be characterized by significant contaminant loading, potentially affecting receiving ecosystem (and potentially human) health. The current study examined biofilm growth and nutrient adsorption in Olympic Lake (Beijing), the largest artificial urban lake in the world supplied exclusively by reclaimed wastewater. Findings indicate that solid particulate, extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) and metal oxide (Al, Fe, Mn) constituent masses adhere to a bacterial growth curve during biofilm formation and growth. Peak values were observed after ≈30 days, arrived at dynamic stability after ≈50days …

Institutional Repositories In The Czech Republic, Kelci Baughman Mcdowell Jan 2016

Institutional Repositories In The Czech Republic, Kelci Baughman Mcdowell

Gleeson Library Faculty and Staff Research and Scholarship

This research project examines the use of institutional repositories (IRs) by academic and research institutions in the Czech Republic. Six Czech institutional repositories are examined in context with the open access (OA) movement in the US and Europe in order to identify what goals have been achieved, what challenges lie ahead, and how the IR functions within the academic ecosystem. IR development in the Czech Republic has been driven by a government statute to provide electronic access to theses and dissertations (ETDs), yet five out of the six IRs hold more content than ETDs alone. Despite not being totally OA, …

Squared Bessel Process With Delay, Harry Randolph Hughes, Pathiranage Lochana Siriwardena Jan 2016

Squared Bessel Process With Delay, Harry Randolph Hughes, Pathiranage Lochana Siriwardena

Articles and Preprints

We discuss a generalization of the well known squared Bessel process with real nonnegative parameter $\delta$ by introducing a predictable almost everywhere positive process $\gamma(t,\omega)$ into the drift and diffusion terms. The resulting generalized process is nonnegative with instantaneous reflection at zero when $\delta$ is positive. When $\delta$ is a positive integer, the process can be constructed from $\delta$-dimensional Brownian motion. In particular, we consider $\gamma_t = X_{t-\tau}$ which makes the process a solution of a stochastic delay differential equation with a discrete delay. The solutions of these equations are constructed in successive steps on time intervals of length $\tau$. …

Smallest Labelled Class And Largest Automorphism Group Of A Tree T_{S,T}, John Mcsorley Jan 2016

Smallest Labelled Class And Largest Automorphism Group Of A Tree T_{S,T}, John Mcsorley

Articles and Preprints

We show that the smallest class of labelled copies of an unlabelled tree T_{s,t} with 2<=s<=t, in the complete bipartite graph K_{s,t} has size st, is unique and has representative unlabelled tree the double-star, D_{s,t}. Equivalently, the tree T_{s,t} which has largest automorphism group size amongst all such trees is D_{s,t} with automorphism group size (s-1)!(t-1)! and automorphism group Sym(s-1) x Sym(t-1). Slight modications of these statements are needed if s = t. We also produce a novel method for finding all labelled copies of tree T_{s,t}.

A Bond Length – Bond Valence Relationship For Carbon – Nitrogen Bonds, C. Harris, F. D. Hardcastle Jan 2016

A Bond Length – Bond Valence Relationship For Carbon – Nitrogen Bonds, C. Harris, F. D. Hardcastle

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

In a recent study, Pauling’s relationship between bond length and valence was derived along with a definition for his fitting parameter b that incorporates the orbital exponents for each atom contributing to the bond of interest. The values of b for various bonds, including C-N bonds, were calculated using the orbital exponent data. In this study, Pauling’s correlation between bond length and bond valence, as well as his valence sum rule, were used with the recently-derived definition for b in order to produce a relationship specifically applicable to C-N bonds. The resulting equation was checked against published x-ray diffraction data …

Impacts Of Man-Made Structures On Avian Community Metrics In 4 State Parks In Northwestern Arkansas, R. D. Keith, B. Grooms, R. E. Urbanek Jan 2016

Impacts Of Man-Made Structures On Avian Community Metrics In 4 State Parks In Northwestern Arkansas, R. D. Keith, B. Grooms, R. E. Urbanek

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Avian community metrics often differ between areas with no human disturbance and areas with high levels of human disturbance. However, the relationships between avian community metrics and smaller-scale disturbances are not as clear. Our goal was to investigate if avian abundance, richness, evenness, and diversity differed in areas with and without small-scale human developments. We used fixed-radius 50-m avian point counts to compare points which contained a man-made structure (n = 47), such as a picnic area, road, or campsite to those that did not contain a man-made structure (n = 181) at 4 state parks in Arkansas during 18 …

Biomass (Yard Waste) Suspensions As Alternative Daily Cover Material For Landfills, R. Sharma, K. Arnoult, K. Hart, G. Phillips, S. Knight, M. Grappe Jan 2016

Biomass (Yard Waste) Suspensions As Alternative Daily Cover Material For Landfills, R. Sharma, K. Arnoult, K. Hart, G. Phillips, S. Knight, M. Grappe

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Biomass makes up approximately 16% of the landfills (this number can vary significantly depending upon the geographical location and time of the year). A majority of the biomass disposed in landfills is comprised of yard waste including grass and leaf clippings. This is becoming a problem as most landfills are running out of space and it is expensive to build new landfills. Twenty-four states have prohibited the disposal of yard waste in landfills with more states likely to follow suit. To conserve landfill space it is important to identify processes and methods for effective utilization and disposal of yard waste. …

Sustainability For Shrinking Cities, Justin L. Herrmann, William D. Shuster, Audrey L. Mayer, Ahjond S. Garmestani Jan 2016

Sustainability For Shrinking Cities, Justin L. Herrmann, William D. Shuster, Audrey L. Mayer, Ahjond S. Garmestani

College of Forest Resources and Environmental Science Publications

Shrinking cities are widespread throughout the world despite the rapidly increasing global urban population. These cities are attempting to transition to sustainable trajectories to improve the health and well-being of urban residents, to build their capacity to adapt to changing conditions and to cope with major events. The dynamics of shrinking cities are different than the dynamics of growing cities, and therefore intentional research and planning around creating sustainable cities is needed for shrinking cities. We propose research that can be applied to shrinking cities by identifying parallel challenges in growing cities and translating urban research and planning that is …

Investigating Evolutionary Dynamics Of Rha1 Operons, Yong Chen, Dandan Geng, Kristina Ehrhardt, Shaoqiang Zhang Jan 2016

Investigating Evolutionary Dynamics Of Rha1 Operons, Yong Chen, Dandan Geng, Kristina Ehrhardt, Shaoqiang Zhang

College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research

Grouping genes as operons is an important genomic feature of prokaryotic organisms. The comprehensive understanding of the operon organizations would be helpful to decipher transcriptional mechanisms, cellular pathways, and the evolutionary landscape of prokaryotic genomes. Although thousands of prokaryotes have been sequenced, genome-wide investigation of the evolutionary dynamics (division and recombination) of operons among these genomes remains unexplored. Here, we systematically analyzed the operon dynamics of Rhodococcus jostii RHA1 (RHA1), an oleaginous bacterium with high potential applications in biofuel, by comparing 340 prokaryotic genomes that were carefully selected from different genera. Interestingly, 99% of RHA1 operons were observed to exhibit …

Optimizing Campus Mobility With A Focus On Sustainability: A Graph Theory Approach To Intra-Campus Transportation Networks, Quinn Nelson, Donald Steffensmeier, Sachin Pawaskar

Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

The idea of public transportation is supported by most in theory but often heavily criticized by users when put into application. There are common tensions that are related to public transportation, as described by frequent users: unreliable, too crowded, and slow. The University of Nebraska-Omaha (UNO) is a growing metropolitan institution that uses a shuttle system to transport students among their three campuses daily. As of 2015, the current total student enrollment is approximately 16,000; UNO plans to enroll 20,000 students by 2020. The expected student growth is also reflected by the current construction of new buildings and expansion of …

Mentorship And Women Of Color In Higher Education: The Stronger Our Voice, The Greater Impact We Might Forge, Victoria Duran

Listening to the Voices: Multi-ethnic Women in Education

This essay examines the experience of women faculty of color in institutions of higher education, specifically focusing on the lived experiences of Latinas and the role of mentorship. Mentorship for women of color in higher education is essential to increasing tenure rates, overall success in academia, and the retention and recruitment of Latina and African American female students, particularly in predominately White institutions, to break through the glass ceiling. This essay explores historical accounts of the formation of the education system, the history of mentorship, and the different forms of mentorship for Latinas.

Supporting The Success Of Female Asian American College Students, Gregory V. Wolcott Jan 2016

Supporting The Success Of Female Asian American College Students, Gregory V. Wolcott

Listening to the Voices: Multi-ethnic Women in Education

This essay outlines important research on female Asian American college students as they weave through the shared experiences of college campus life, and through the multidimensional complexities of identity development. In it, I suggest that colleges should develop programs outside of so-called traditional developmental models and celebrate the history, traditions, and contributions of all student groups through relevant programs and support. In particular, a more formalized theory of development needs to be developed in regard to female Asian American students. The aforementioned point of view is supported in the research literature.
