Habitat Use And Avoidance By Foraging Red-Cockaded Woodpeckers In East Texas, John N. Macey, Brent Burt, Daniel Saenz, Richard N. Conner

Faculty Publications

Picoides borealis (Red-cockaded Woodpecker) is an endangered bird endemic to the Pinus (pine) ecosystems of the southeastern US. Mature pine savannahs with a minimal midstory and lush herbaceous groundcover represent high-quality habitat. This study examines the foraging-habitat patterns of Red-cockaded Woodpeckers in East Texas. We present a logistic regression model that best differentiates between foraged and non-foraged habitat. Increases in hardwood-midstory basal area have the greatest negative impact on the probability of Red-cockaded Woodpeckers selecting a habitat patch for foraging. Five additional variables negatively impact foraging probability: shrub height, diameter at breast height (DBH) of pine midstory, canopy closure, density …

Determination Of Hexavalent Chromium (Cr(Vi)) Concentrations Via Ion Chromatography And Uv-Vis Spectrophotometry In Samples Collected From Nacogdoches Wastewater Treatment Plant, East Texas (Usa), Kefa Karimu Onchoke, Salomey A. Sasu

Faculty Publications

The concentration of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)), a toxic environmental pollutant and carcinogen, was determined in samples collected from Nacogdoches Wastewater Treatment Plant (NWWTP) using ion chromatography and UV-visible spectrophotometry (IC, UV-Vis). On reaction with 1,5-diphenylcarbazide (DPC) Cr+6 forms a 1,5-diphenylcarbazide-Cr(VI) complex, which is then analyzed at 530nm and 540nm, respectively. Via ion chromatography Cr(VI) concentrations were in the range of 0.00190 ± 0.0020 and 0.0010 ± 0.0006ppm at the influent and effluent, respectively. With the use of standard addition wastewater samples were spiked with a 0.5ppm Cr(VI) standard of various amounts and subsequently analyzed with UV-Vis spectrophotometry. The spiked concentrations …

Water Soluble Cationic Porphyrin Sensor For Detection Of Hg2+, Pb2+, Cd2+, And Cu2+, Matibur Zamadar, Christopher Orr, Miranda Uherek

Faculty Publications

Here we report the sensing properties of the aqueous solution of meso-tetra(N-methyl-4-pyridyl)porphine tetrachloride (1) for simultaneous detection of toxic metal ions by using UV-vis spectroscopy. Cationic porphyrin 1 displayed different electronic absorptions in UV-vis region upon interacting with Hg2+, Pb2+, Cd2+, and Cu2+ ions in neutral water solution at room temperature. Quite interestingly, the porphyrin 1 showed that it can function as a single optical chemical sensor and/or metal ion receptor capable of detecting two or more toxic metal ions, particularly Hg2+, Pb2+, and Cd2+ ions coexisting in a water sample. Porphyrin 1 in an aqueous solution provides a unique …

"High-Valent Copper In Biomimetic And Biological Oxidations", J. Brannon Gary Jan 2016

"High-Valent Copper In Biomimetic And Biological Oxidations", J. Brannon Gary

Faculty Publications

A long-standing debate in the Cu-O2 field has revolved around the relevance of the Cu(III) oxidation state in biological redox processes. The proposal of Cu(III) in biology is generally challenged as no spectroscopic or structural evidence exists currently for its presence. The reaction of synthetic Cu(I) complexes with O2 at low temperature in aprotic solvents provides the opportunity to investigate and define the chemical landscape of Cu-O2 species at a small molecule level of detail; eight different types are characterized structurally, three of which contain at least one Cu(III) center. Simple imidazole or histamine ligands are competent in these oxygenation …

Gnu Radio Companion (Grc) On Software Defined Radio Platforms, Jacob Ramey, James Begemann, Richard Hite

Capstone Design Expo Posters

Software defined radio (SDR) is a method to design radio frequency (RF) signal systems using software to implement radio components that are normally implemented in hardware. Several examples of components that can be designed in SDR include RF signal filters, signal amplifiers, and signal resamplers. SDR applications include amateur radio transmission, aircraft and ship tracking, RF communications, and radio astronomy, to name a few. A great advantage of implementing a RF system in software is that the system developed in software is more flexible and upgradeable than a system designed with hardware alone.

QRC Technologies offers a wide range of …

Spectrophotometric Analysis Of Urinary Iodine In 18-22 Year-Old Women In Central Minnesota, Haley Chatelaine Jan 2016

Spectrophotometric Analysis Of Urinary Iodine In 18-22 Year-Old Women In Central Minnesota, Haley Chatelaine

All College Thesis Program, 2016-2019

Iodine is an overlooked but incredibly important micronutrient, especially with regard to early fetus development. The United States does not mandate salt iodization, so widely consumed processed foods are not likely to contain iodized salt, which may potentially put the population at risk for developing iodine deficiencies. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to correspond iodine intake to iodine status and establish effective methods for determining a relationship between the two. Subjects (n=23) completed a food survey and supplied 50mL urine samples to compare an estimated average daily iodine intake based on foods over the course of a week …

An Exploration Of Artefacts Of Remote Desktop Applications On Windows, Paresh Kerai, Vimal Murji Vekariya Jan 2016

An Exploration Of Artefacts Of Remote Desktop Applications On Windows, Paresh Kerai, Vimal Murji Vekariya

Australian Digital Forensics Conference

Remote Desktop Applications (RDA) such as Virtual Network Computing (VNC), Cisco WebEx, GoToMeeting and LogMeIn have been adapted and utilised recently. This is because they facilitate tier-one support to configure computers, networks and solve application-related issues from a remote location. The direct benefit from the use of these applications, is the time (and therefore cost) saving for organisations. Unfortunately, “remoting” technology can also be used by criminals to perform illegal activities, hence remote applications are of key interest to law agencies and forensic investigators. The research outlined in this paper aims to identify any artefacts left behind by common remote …

The Use Of Hybrid Educational Method For Trauma Training Among U.S. Air Force Nurses, Karey M. Dufour Jan 2016

The Use Of Hybrid Educational Method For Trauma Training Among U.S. Air Force Nurses, Karey M. Dufour

Doctor of Nursing Practice Program Projects

Trauma assessment is a core skill for all United States Air Force nurses. However, with the recent withdrawals from Iraq and Afghanistan, there are serious concerns about how Air Force nurses can maintain high-level trauma skills without the frequent exposure and opportunities in which to perform them. Although training affiliation agreements with local civilian trauma centers exist, it is difficult to routinely send nurses to receive training in these facilities due to time constraints. Simulation is a feasible way to provide essential training and allows participants to practice critical skills during reproducible scenarios in a realistic but non-threatening environment. Providing …

A Performance Analysis Framework For Coreference Resolution Algorithms, Chandankumar Johakhim Patel Jan 2016

A Performance Analysis Framework For Coreference Resolution Algorithms, Chandankumar Johakhim Patel

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

This thesis entitled A Performance Analysis Framework for Coreference Resolution Algorithms, focuses on the topic of coreference resolution of semantic datasets. In order for Big Data analytics to be effective, it is essential to develop automated algorithms capable of integrating multiple datasets that contain data about a particular person or other entity. Accomplishing this necessitates coreference resolution; for example, determining that J. Doe in one dataset refers to the same person as Jonathan Doe Jr. in another dataset. There are many existing coreference resolution algorithms, but there are only a few basic design decisions to be made by such systems …

Bioavailability And Transformation Of Silver Nanoparticles In The Freshwater Environment, Seth W. Brittle Jan 2016

Bioavailability And Transformation Of Silver Nanoparticles In The Freshwater Environment, Seth W. Brittle

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

The proliferation of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in consumer products and industrial applications has generated many environmental concerns since the chemistry of silver changes at the nanoscale and the very properties that make them desirable – their unique reactivity – may pose environmental risks. This dissertation addresses these concerns from three different angles. First, freshwater crayfish is demonstrated as a potential benthic indicator of Ag pollution since Ag accumulation depends on the form of Ag. The uptake and distribution of Ag (from AgNPs or Ag+) in tissue samples were measured by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). The hepatopancreas (1.5-17.4 …

Probing The Electroweak Phase Transition At The Lhc, Peisi Huang, Aniket Joglekar, Bing Li, Carlos E. M. Wagner Jan 2016

Probing The Electroweak Phase Transition At The Lhc, Peisi Huang, Aniket Joglekar, Bing Li, Carlos E. M. Wagner

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

We study the correlation between the value of the triple Higgs coupling and the nature of the electroweak phase transition. We use an effective potential approach, including higher order, nonrenormalizable terms coming from integrating out new physics. We show that if only the dimension six operators are considered, large positive deviations of the triple Higgs coupling from its standard model (SM) value are predicted in the regions of parameter space consistent with a strong first order electroweak phase transition. We also show that at higher orders sizable and negative deviations of the triple Higgs coupling may be obtained, and the sign …

A Lower Bound For Stanley Depth Of Squarefree Monomial Ideals, Guangjun Zhu Jan 2016

A Lower Bound For Stanley Depth Of Squarefree Monomial Ideals, Guangjun Zhu

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

Let $S=K[x_{1},\dots,x_{n}]$ be a polynomial ring over a field $K$ in $n$ variables and $I$ a squarefree monomial ideal of $S$ with Schmitt--Vogel number $sv(I)$. In this paper, we show that $\mbox{sdepth}\,(I)\geq \mbox{max}\,\{1, n-1-\lfloor \frac{sv(I)}{2}\rfloor\},$ which improves the lower bound obtained by Herzog, Vladoiu, and Zheng. As some applications, we show that Stanley's conjecture holds for the edge ideals of some special $n$-cyclic graphs with a common edge.
