Mechanistic Abstraction, Worth Boone, Gualtiero Piccinini Jan 2016

Mechanistic Abstraction, Worth Boone, Gualtiero Piccinini

Philosophy Faculty Works

We provide an explicit taxonomy of legitimate kinds of abstraction within constitutive explanation. We argue that abstraction is an inherent aspect of adequate mechanistic explanation. Mechanistic explanations—even ideally complete ones—typically involve many kinds of abstraction and therefore do not require maximal detail. Some kinds of abstraction play the ontic role of identifying the specific complex components, subsets of causal powers, and organizational relations that produce a suitably general phenomenon. Therefore, abstract constitutive explanations are both legitimate and mechanistic.

Group Scheduling In A Cellular Manufacturing Shop To Minimise Total Tardiness And Nt: A Comparative Genetic Algorithm And Mathematical Modelling Approach, Gokhan Egilmez, Emre M. Mese, Bulent Erenay, Gürsel A. Süer

Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Faculty Publications

In this paper, family and job scheduling in a cellular manufacturing shop is addressed where jobs have individual due dates. The objectives are to minimise total tardiness and the number of tardy jobs. Family splitting among cells is allowed but job splitting is not. Two optimisation methods are employed in order to solve this problem, namely mathematical modelling (MM) and genetic algorithm (GA). The results showed that GA found the optimal solution for most of the problems with high frequency. Furthermore, the proposed GA is efficient compared to the MM especially for larger problems in terms of execution times. Other …

Comparison Of Π-Hole Tetrel Bonding With Σ-Hole Halogen Bonds In Complexes Of Xcn (X = F, Cl, Br, I) And Nh3, Steve Scheiner, Vincent De Paul Nziko Jan 2016

Comparison Of Π-Hole Tetrel Bonding With Σ-Hole Halogen Bonds In Complexes Of Xcn (X = F, Cl, Br, I) And Nh3, Steve Scheiner, Vincent De Paul Nziko

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

In addition to the standard halogen bond formed when NH3 approaches XCN (X=F,Cl,Br,I) along its molecular axis, a perpendicular approach is also possible, toward a π-hole that is present above the X-C bond. MP2/aug-cc-pVDZ calculations indicate the latter geometry is favored for X=F, and the σ-hole structure is preferred for the heavier halogens. The π-hole structure is stabilized by charge transfer from the NH3 lone pair into the π*(CN) antibonding orbital, and is characterized by a bond path from the N of NH3 to the C atom of XCN, a form of tetrel bond. The most stable …

The Map Portal Project At The Geological Survey Of Israel, Marcelo Rosensaft, Howard R. Feldman Jan 2016

The Map Portal Project At The Geological Survey Of Israel, Marcelo Rosensaft, Howard R. Feldman

Lander College for Women - The Anna Ruth and Mark Hasten School Publications and Research

The Geological Survey of Israel is mandated to prepare official geological maps of Israel at different scales. When, by the end of the 80’s, GIS systems became more popular and a realistic option for us, we started the development of a methodology and system that led to the completion of a new geological map of Israel at 1:200,000 in 1998. This resulted in a huge impetus for the preparation of the Geological Map of Israel at 1:50,000 in 79 separate sheets. In addition, using the above GIS system, other maps were prepared; outcomes of various projects - in hydrogeology, geological …

Greenc5: An Adaptive, Energy-Aware Collection For Green Software Development, Junya Michanan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Dynamic data structures in software applications have been shown to have a large impact on system performance. In this paper, we explore energy saving opportunities of interface-based dynamic data structures. Our results suggest that savings opportunities exist in the C5 Collection between 16.95% and 97.50%. We propose a prototype and architecture for creating adaptive green data structures by applying machine learning tools to build a model for predicting energy efficient data structures based on the dynamic workload. Our neural network model can classify energy efficient data structures based on features such as the number of elements, frequency of operations, interface …

Sexy Technical Communication, Tamara Powell, Jonathan Arnett, Monique Logan, Cassandra Race, Tiffani Reardon Jan 2016

Sexy Technical Communication, Tamara Powell, Jonathan Arnett, Monique Logan, Cassandra Race, Tiffani Reardon

2016 Faculty Bookshelf

Sexy technical writing…we’ve got to be kidding, right? But no, we aren’t. Good technical writing is powerful and clear and gets the job done. It brings people together and solves problems. Good technical writing purrs and hums like that BMW you plan to be driving someday. What’s not sexy about that? On the other hand, poor technical writing skills may lead to a lifetime of asking people if they want fries with that…or worse, selling vacuum cleaners door to door. There’s no need to ask what’s not sexy about that!

WE – your textbook authors – are a team of dedicated …

Variations In The Intensity Of Specialized Science, Technology, Engineering, And Mathematics (Stem) High Schools, Colby Tofel-Grehl, Carolyn M. Callahan Jan 2016

Variations In The Intensity Of Specialized Science, Technology, Engineering, And Mathematics (Stem) High Schools, Colby Tofel-Grehl, Carolyn M. Callahan

Teacher Education and Leadership Faculty Publications

Educators and policymakers in the United States advocate the development of specialized STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) schools, but little is known about the unique features and practices of these schools. Because no meaningful differences have been found attributable to model type (Tofel-Grehl & Callahan, 2014), the current study purposefully sampled 6 specialized STEM schools in the United States that provided different levels of STEM experiences for students related to highly varied goals and missions using a grounded theory approach. Schools were found to fall into two categories, high and low STEM intensity, based on five major traits. Schools …
