Human mathematical abilities comprise both learned, symbolic representations of number and unlearned, non-symbolic evolutionarily primitive cognitive systems for representing quantities. However, the mechanisms by which our symbolic (verbal) number system becomes integrated with the non-symbolic (non-verbal) representations of approximate magnitude (supported by the Approximate Number System, or ANS) are not well understood. To explore this connection, forty-six children participated in a 6-month longitudinal study assessing verbal number knowledge and non-verbal numerical acuity. Cross-sectional analyses revealed a strong relationship between verbal number knowledge and ANS acuity. Longitudinal analyses suggested that increases in ANS acuity were most strongly related to the acquisition …

At a proximal level, the physiological impacts of global climate change on ectothermic organisms are manifest as changes in body temperatures. Especially for plants and animals exposed to direct solar radiation, body temperatures can be substantially different from air temperatures. We deployed biomimetic sensors that approximate the thermal characteristics of intertidal mussels at 71 sites worldwide, from 1998-present. Loggers recorded temperatures at 10–30 min intervals nearly continuously at multiple intertidal elevations. Comparisons against direct measurements of mussel tissue temperature indicated errors of ~2.0–2.5 °C, during daily fluctuations that often exceeded 15°–20 °C. Geographic patterns in thermal stress based on biomimetic …

Syntheses And Characterization Of [4]Ferrocenophane, Ahmed Sabah Al-Doori Jan 2016

Syntheses And Characterization Of [4]Ferrocenophane, Ahmed Sabah Al-Doori

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Metallocenophanes are metallocenes in which the cyclopentadienyl ligands are connected by a molecular bridge. Recently, metallocenophanes have received increasing attention because of their structure, chemical reactivity, and potential use as building blocks for new materials. Even though metallocenophanes have been synthesized by different methods, the majority of these methods involved the use of iron with rare examples of other metals. Therefore, a new method was employed that in addition to making ferrocenophane, will allow us to synthesize metallocenophanes with V, Cr, Mn, Co, and Ni as central metals. This thesis reports the synthesis of [4]ferrocenophane via a “flytrap” route. The …

Experimental Study Of The Flow Of Ferrofluid In A Porous Media Under A Magnetic Field, Muskaan Khurana Jan 2016

Experimental Study Of The Flow Of Ferrofluid In A Porous Media Under A Magnetic Field, Muskaan Khurana

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

This research presents results from a laboratory-scale experimental setup that was designed to visualize the behavior of ferrofluid percolation through a porous media. Ferrofluids are colloidal suspensions made of magnetic particles of a few nanometers and stabilized in carrier liquids like water or mineral oil. Ferrofluids get magnetized and align themselves in the direction of a magnetic field when a field gradient is applied.

With the help of this experiment we investigate the viability of controlling fluid flow in porous medium by a magnetic field in vicinity. The experiments show that ferrofluids can be used as a transporting media to …

Clme: An R Package For Linear Mixed Effects Models Under Inequality Constraints, Casey M. Jelsema, Shyamal D. Peddada

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

In many applications researchers are typically interested in testing for inequality constraints in the context of linear fixed effects and mixed effects models. Although there exists a large body of literature for performing statistical inference under inequality constraints, user friendly statistical software implementing such methods is lacking, especially in the context of linear fixed and mixed effects models. In this article we introduce CLME, a package in the R language that can be used for testing a broad collection of inequality constraints. It uses residual bootstrap based methodology which is reasonably robust to non-normality as well as heteroscedasticity. The package …

Population Density, Not Host Competence, Drives Patterns Of Disease In An Invaded Community, C. L. Searle Jan 2016

Population Density, Not Host Competence, Drives Patterns Of Disease In An Invaded Community, C. L. Searle

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Presentations

Generalist parasites can strongly influence interactions between native and invasive species. Host competence can be used to predict how an invasive species will affect community disease dynamics; the addition of a highly competent, invasive host is predicted to increase disease. However, densities of invasive and native species can also influence the impacts of invasive species on community disease dynamics. We examined whether information on host competence alone could be used to accurately predict the effects of an invasive host on disease in native hosts. We first characterized the relative competence of an invasive species and a native host species to …

How Long Does Savings Last When Retirees Need More Money (Or Less) Than Theory Suggests?, Steven Welch Jan 2016

How Long Does Savings Last When Retirees Need More Money (Or Less) Than Theory Suggests?, Steven Welch

Accounting and Finance Faculty Publications

Popular convention is to initially withdraw approximately 4% of the retirement savings and increase that dollar amount each year by inflation. But, what if 4% isn’t enough? How long will retirement funds last if a newly retired person needs 5%, 6%, or even 10%? Modern Portfolio Theory (MPT) suggests that an investor only needs to choose between 2 assets, the risk free rate and an optimal risky portfolio. In this paper, five U.S.-based assets are tracked from 1934 until 2015 to see how long they survived independently and in combination with one other asset. Obviously the more a person needs …

The Ecology And Evolution Of Rare, Soil Specialist Astragalus Plants In The Arid Western U.S., Joseph M. Statwick Jan 2016

The Ecology And Evolution Of Rare, Soil Specialist Astragalus Plants In The Arid Western U.S., Joseph M. Statwick

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Organisms that specialize in uncommon habitats are, by their very nature, inherently uncommon. Specialization has its advantages, namely reduced competition and predation, but it also incurs costs. Specialists often have small population sizes, narrow ranges, and fragmented habitat, all of which engender negative consequences on an evolutionary timescale. Herein, I examine benefits and costs of specialization in selenium-hyperaccumulating plants in the genus Astragalus (Fabaceae). These plants are disproportionately likely to be rare and of conservation concern. Thus, I optimized germination pretreatments for Astragalus species such that seed loss can be minimized during ex situ cultivation, and found that physical scarification …

Development Of Palladium Catalyzed Alkene Difunctionalization On Vinyl-Quinoline Type Substrate And Isolation Of Pd-Alkyl Intermediate, Lusha Xu Jan 2016

Development Of Palladium Catalyzed Alkene Difunctionalization On Vinyl-Quinoline Type Substrate And Isolation Of Pd-Alkyl Intermediate, Lusha Xu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The synthesis of quinoline derivatives is a continuing issue facing organic chemists in both academia and industry. To address this problem, palladium-catalyzed alkene difunctionalization was developed to be a powerful and straightforward strategy of synthetic transformations for adding diversity to organic molecules. In this thesis, Pd-catalyzed olefin difunctionalization reactions of vinyl-quinoline type substrate via generating Pd-alkyl intermediates were mainly described. The reactions described herein are pursuing three significant goals: 1) to isolate and recrystallize Pd-alkyl complexes; 2) to achieve oxidation reactions on Pd-alkyl intermediate; and 3) to investigate stereochemistry of nucleopalladation step on vinyl-quinoline starting materials.

Meta-Analysis Of The Predictive Validity Of Scholastic Aptitude Test (Sat) And American College Testing (Act) Scores For College Gpa, Muhammet Curabay Jan 2016

Meta-Analysis Of The Predictive Validity Of Scholastic Aptitude Test (Sat) And American College Testing (Act) Scores For College Gpa, Muhammet Curabay

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The college admission systems of the United States require the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) and American College Testing (ACT) examinations. Although, some resources suggest that SAT and ACT scores give some meaningful information about academic success, others disagree. The objective of this study was to determine whether there is significant predictive validity of SAT and ACT exams for college success. This study examined the effectiveness of SAT and ACT scores for predicting college students' first year GPA scores with a meta-analytic approach. Most of the studies were retrieved from Academic Search Complete and ERIC databases, published between 1990 and 2016. …

A Comprehensive Methodology For Design Of A Circulation Control Small-Scale Unmanned Aircraft, Konstantinos Kanistras Jan 2016

A Comprehensive Methodology For Design Of A Circulation Control Small-Scale Unmanned Aircraft, Konstantinos Kanistras

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have become increasingly prevalent and important for a wide spectrum of civilian and military operations. When focusing on small-scale fixed-wing UAVs, payload, power and energy requirements limit considerably their utilization and flexibility allowing them to complete only those specific missions they are designed for. Circulation Control (CC) is an active flow control method used to produce increased lift over the traditional systems (flaps, slats, etc...) currently in use. This dissertation focuses on the foundations of a comprehensive methodology from design to implementation and experimental testing of Coanda-based Circulation Control Wings (CCW) for unmanned aircraft. The …

An Examination Of The Nature Of Post-Observation Feedback Provided To Middle School Mathematics Teachers, Christine Trinter, Heather Carlson-Jaquez Jan 2016

An Examination Of The Nature Of Post-Observation Feedback Provided To Middle School Mathematics Teachers, Christine Trinter, Heather Carlson-Jaquez

MERC Publications

Many studies have examined teacher evaluation but few address the discipline expertise of evaluators and the type of post-observation feedback provided to teachers. With the current focus in mathematics education on processes and justification, the type of post-observation feedback teachers receive is critical to improving instruction. This qualitative study examined the type of feedback and use of observation protocols by evaluators with different mathematical backgrounds. Findings reveal the difference in the nature of discipline specific feedback between observers as well as the difference in the way the teacher evaluation system was employed among observers. The evaluative nature of observer's roles …

Calculus Students’ Ideas About Functions: Identifying Opportunities To Support Teacher Learning, Laurie Overman Cavey, Patrick R. Lowenthal Jan 2016

Calculus Students’ Ideas About Functions: Identifying Opportunities To Support Teacher Learning, Laurie Overman Cavey, Patrick R. Lowenthal

Mathematics Faculty Publications and Presentations

We describe the first phase of a study aimed at developing video-based instructional modules for secondary mathematics teachers. We began by consulting the literature on figural pattern tasks (c.f. Rivera, 2010) and teachers’ ability to interpret student work (c.f. El Mouhayar & Jurdak, 2012). Interpreting student work on figural pattern tasks requires awareness of different problem solving strategies, such as recursive and constructive, and how students might use them with tasks that require different levels of generalization (El Mouhayar & Jurdak, 2012).

Exploring And Examining Quantitative Measures, Jonathan D. Bostic, Erin Krupa, Michele Carney, Jeff Shih

Curriculum, Instruction, and Foundational Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

The purpose of this working group is to bring together scholars with an interest in examining the research on quantitative tools and measures for gathering meaningful data, and to spark conversations and collaboration across individuals and groups with an interest in synthesizing the literature on large-scale tools used to measure student- and teacher-related outcomes. While syntheses of measures for use in mathematics education can be found in the literature, few can be described as a comprehensive analysis. The working group session will focus on (1) defining terms identified as critical (e.g., large-scale, quantitative, and validity evidence) for bounding the focus …

Validity Of Ehrenfest's Theorem For Generalizedfields Of Dyons, Gaurav Karnatak, Praveen Singh Bisht, Om Prakash Singh Negi Jan 2016

Validity Of Ehrenfest's Theorem For Generalizedfields Of Dyons, Gaurav Karnatak, Praveen Singh Bisht, Om Prakash Singh Negi

Turkish Journal of Physics

The validity of Ehrenfest's theorem with its classical correspondence has been justified for the manifestly covariant equations of dyons. We have also developed accordingly the Lagrangian formulation for electromagnetic fields in a minimum coupled source giving rise to conserved current of dyons. Applying the Gupta subsidiary condition we have extended the validity of the Ehrenfest's theorem for $U\left(1\right)\times U\left(1\right)$ Abelian gauge theory of dyons. It is shown that the expectation value of the quantum equation of motion reproduces the classical equation of motion, which is the generalized form of Ehrenfest's theorem in quantum field theory.

Isospin Mixing And Fermi Transitions For Some Deformed Nuclei, Serdar Ünlü, Hasan Ali̇ Aygör, Necla Çakmak, Cevad Selam Jan 2016

Isospin Mixing And Fermi Transitions For Some Deformed Nuclei, Serdar Ünlü, Hasan Ali̇ Aygör, Necla Çakmak, Cevad Selam

Turkish Journal of Physics

We have tried to give a self-consistent explanation of isospin mixing and Fermi beta decays for 54 $\le $ Z $\le $ 68 deformed nuclei. The effect of isospin impurity in nuclear ground states on Fermi beta transitions has been investigated considering the restoration of symmetry violations stemming from the mean field approximation. The isobar analogue excitations in neighbor odd-odd nuclei have been obtained by following the proton-neutron quasiparticle random phase approximation (pnQRPA) procedure. The dependence of isospin admixture probability on the deformation parameter has been determined for various isotopes of Z = 54-68 nuclei. Then the variations of isobar …

Recursion Formula For The Green's Function Of A Hamiltonian For Several Types Of Dirac Delta-Function Potentials In Curved Spaces, Fati̇h Erman Jan 2016

Recursion Formula For The Green's Function Of A Hamiltonian For Several Types Of Dirac Delta-Function Potentials In Curved Spaces, Fati̇h Erman

Turkish Journal of Physics

In this short article, we nonperturbatively derive a recursive formula for the Green's function associated with finitely many point Dirac delta potentials in one dimension. We extend this formula to the one for the Dirac delta potentials supported by regular curves embedded in two-dimensional manifolds and for the Dirac delta potentials supported by two-dimensional compact manifolds embedded in three-dimensional manifolds. Finally, this formulation allows us to find the recursive formula of the Green's function for the point Dirac delta potentials in two- and three-dimensional Riemannian manifolds, where the renormalization of coupling constant is required.

Properties Of Asymmetric Semiinfinite Nuclear Systems In The Extended Thomas-Fermi Model, Mohamed Abdalla Jan 2016

Properties Of Asymmetric Semiinfinite Nuclear Systems In The Extended Thomas-Fermi Model, Mohamed Abdalla

Turkish Journal of Physics

We start from the energy density of the Skyrme interaction and perform a leptodermous expansion for an asymmetric semiinfinite nuclear system. We get a liquid drop model formula for the energy of such a system. We use the obtained analytic formulae for volume, surface, and curvature energies to study the properties of asymmetric nuclear systems. We also study the effect of the asymmetry parameter on the volume, surface, and curvature properties.

A Comparative Study Of The Electronic Properties Of Aluminum Nitride Compounds, Rezek Mohammad, Şenay Katircioğlu Jan 2016

A Comparative Study Of The Electronic Properties Of Aluminum Nitride Compounds, Rezek Mohammad, Şenay Katircioğlu

Turkish Journal of Physics

Electronic properties of aluminum nitride in wurtzite, zinc-blende, and rock-salt phases are investigated by a full potential-linearized augmented plane waves method based on density functional theory within standard local density approximation and its four improved versions. Local density approximation corrected by the generalized gradient functional of Perdew-Wang-Engel-Vosko is found to be more successful than the other generalized gradient functional approximations considered in this work for providing reasonable lattice constants, energy gaps, effective electron and hole masses, and optical features for AlN phases. Although local density approximation corrected by modified Becke-Johnson potential underestimates the static dielectric constants, it provides the largest …
