Comparability Of Mean Scores Of Gifted Students On The Jordanian Version Of The Overexcitability Questionnaire (Oeqii) Across Gender, Abdelhafez Al-Shayeb Mar 2016

Comparability Of Mean Scores Of Gifted Students On The Jordanian Version Of The Overexcitability Questionnaire (Oeqii) Across Gender, Abdelhafez Al-Shayeb

Journal of Educational and Psychological Studies

The aim of the present study was to investigate the comparability of the mean scores of gifted students on the Jordanian version of the Overexcitabilities Questionnaire OEQII in light of gender. A cluster random sampling technique was used to collect data from 448 males and females gifted students who are enrolled in the King Abdullah II Schools of Excellence in Jordan. Results of multi-group confirmatory factor analysis clearly indicate that measurement invariance with respect to gender is untenable. Uniform measurement bias was observed in all subscales. Results suggested that the Jordanian version of OEQII failed to display scalar invariance across …

Parent Voices Revisited: American Indian Relationships With Schools, Catherine A. Herzog Mar 2016

Parent Voices Revisited: American Indian Relationships With Schools, Catherine A. Herzog

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This study duplicated the survey research of Robinson-Zanartu and Majel-Dixon in their 1996 article "Parent Voices: American Indian Relationships with Schools" published in The Journal of American Indian Education. Two hypotheses were investigated in this study. The first hypothesis was that due to the increase in multicultural education training that teachers receive as pre-service teachers and in professional development, there would be an increase in Native American parent/community satisfaction with the schools that service their children. The second hypothesis was that due to this multicultural education training there would be a reduction in referrals of Native American students to …

Developing Costa And Kallick’S Habits Of Mind Thinking For Students With A Learning Disability And Special Education Teachers, Daniel Vollrath Mar 2016

Developing Costa And Kallick’S Habits Of Mind Thinking For Students With A Learning Disability And Special Education Teachers, Daniel Vollrath

Graduate Theses & Dissertations

Research has shown that although habits are easier to instill in the early years of children due to the neuroplasticity of the brain, new research has shown that the brains of older children retain the capacity for rewiring and change in habits (Costa & Kallick, 2014). For students with learning disabilities and special education teachers, it is well known that the delivery of instruction needs to accommodate the learning ability. As students with learning disabilities progress through school the goal is to develop successful habits of mind that are necessary to compete in the 21st century. Through researching the habits …

Geodesic Universal Molecules, John C. Bowers, Ileana Streinu Mar 2016

Geodesic Universal Molecules, John C. Bowers, Ileana Streinu

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

The first phase of TreeMaker, a well-known method for origami design, decomposes a planar polygon (the “paper”) into regions. If some region is not convex, TreeMaker indicates it with an error message and stops. Otherwise, a second phases is invoked which computes a crease pattern called a “universal molecule”. In this paper we introduce and study geodesic universal molecules, which also work with non-convex polygons and thus extend the applicability of the TreeMaker method. We characterize the family of disk-like surfaces, crease patterns and folded states produced by our generalized algorithm. They include non-convex polygons drawn on the surface of …

This paper presents the findings of the first broad needs analysis survey in cyber forensics in nearly a decade, aimed at obtaining an updated consensus of professional attitudes in order to optimize resource allocation and to prioritize problems and possible solutions more efficiently. Results from the 99 respondents gave compelling …

Evaluating The Effects Of Strong Teens On High School Student Levels Of Internalizing Symptoms And Resilience, Austin J. Millet Mar 2016

Evaluating The Effects Of Strong Teens On High School Student Levels Of Internalizing Symptoms And Resilience, Austin J. Millet

Theses and Dissertations

Many adults suffering from mental health problems often report that the onset of these concerns began in adolescence, highlighting the importance of identifying and treating mental health concerns from an early age. In high schools, some students are identified as having externalizing or internalizing disorders. The majority of these students, especially those with internalizing symptoms, go untreated. One potential reason may be that limited school resources are used to correct behavior problems, leaving those with internalizing disorders to silently suffer, which often exacerbates the issues. Recent research suggests many individuals have high levels of resilience which can be taught, and …

Conjugate Heat Transfer And Average Versus Variable Heat Transfer Coefficients, Tyler James Macbeth Mar 2016

Conjugate Heat Transfer And Average Versus Variable Heat Transfer Coefficients, Tyler James Macbeth

Theses and Dissertations

An average heat transfer coefficient, h_bar, is often used to solve heat transfer problems. It should be understood that this is an approximation and may provide inaccurate results, especially when the temperature field is of interest. The proper method to solve heat transfer problems is with a conjugate approach. However, there seems to be a lack of clear explanations of conjugate heat transfer in literature. The objective of this work is to provide a clear explanation of conjugate heat transfer and to determine the discrepancy in the temperature field when the interface boundary condition is approximated using h_bar compared to …

Semantic And Syntactic Processing In A Patient With Left Temporal Lobe Damage Secondary To Traumatic Brain Injury: An Fmri Study, Caitlin Moizer

Theses and Dissertations

The ability of the brain to change and form new neuropathways after brain injury is remarkable. The current study investigates the brains ability to form new pathways for language processing following traumatic brain injury (TBI), specifically a left temporal lobectomy. Two subjects participated in this study; one participant with TBI and one age-matched control. Sentence stimuli consisted of four types: semantically correct, semantically incorrect, syntactically correct, and syntactically incorrect. Participants underwent a fMRI scan while the auditory stimuli were presented in four blocks. Participants were asked to record if the sentence was correct or incorrect by pressing the corresponding button. …

Analysis Of High Fidelity Turbomachinery Cfd Using Proper Orthogonal Decomposition, Ronald Alex Spencer Mar 2016

Analysis Of High Fidelity Turbomachinery Cfd Using Proper Orthogonal Decomposition, Ronald Alex Spencer

Theses and Dissertations

Assessing the impact of inlet flow distortion in turbomachinery is desired early in the design cycle. This thesis introduces and validates the use of methods based on the Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) to analyze clean and 1/rev static pressure distortion simulation results at design and near stall operating condition. The value of POD comes in its ability to efficiently extract both quantitative and qualitative information about dominant spatial flow structures as well as information about temporal fluctuations in flow properties. Observation of the modes allowed qualitative identification of shock waves as well as quantification of their location and range of …

Novel Sputtered Stationary Phases For Solid Phase Microextraction, And Other Coatings And Materials For Surface Applications, Anubhav Diwan Mar 2016

Novel Sputtered Stationary Phases For Solid Phase Microextraction, And Other Coatings And Materials For Surface Applications, Anubhav Diwan

Theses and Dissertations

The primary focus of my work has been to prepare new solid adsorbents for solid phase microextraction (SPME) via sputtering of silicon. The orientation of the silica substrates/fibers and the sputtering pressure induced the formation of porous and columnar structures. Sputtering was performed for different times to yield fibers with different thicknesses. Piranha treatment of the surface increased the concentration of silanol groups, which underwent condensation with vapor deposited octadecyldimethylmonomethoxy silane to incorporate octadecyl chains onto the fiber surfaces. Silanized, sputtered fibers were preconditioned for 3 h at 320 °C to remove the unreacted chains. Comparison of the extraction efficiencies …

School of Natural Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

After articulating 12 concepts for the reasoning component of citizen-level science literacy and restating these as assessable student learning outcomes (SLOs), we developed a valid and reliable assessment instrument for addressing the outcomes with a brief 25-item science literacy concept inventory (SLCI). In this paper, we report the results that we obtained from assessing the citizen-level science literacy of 17,382 undergraduate students, 149 graduate students, and 181 professors. We address only findings at or above the 99.9% confidence level. We found that general education (GE) science courses do not significantly advance understanding of science as a way of knowing. However, …

Dirac Hamiltonian And Reissner-Nordström Metric: Coulomb Interaction In Curved Space-Time, J. H. Noble, Ulrich D. Jentschura Mar 2016

Dirac Hamiltonian And Reissner-Nordström Metric: Coulomb Interaction In Curved Space-Time, J. H. Noble, Ulrich D. Jentschura

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We investigate the spin-1/2 relativistic quantum dynamics in the curved space-time generated by a central massive charged object (black hole). This necessitates a study of the coupling of a Dirac particle to the Reissner-Nordström space-time geometry and the simultaneous covariant coupling to the central electrostatic field. The relativistic Dirac Hamiltonian for the Reissner-Nordström geometry is derived. A Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation reveals the presence of gravitational and electrogravitational spin-orbit coupling terms which generalize the Fokker precession terms found for the Dirac-Schwarzschild Hamiltonian, and other electrogravitational correction terms to the potential proportional to αnG, where α is the fine-structure constant and …

Nitrous Oxide In The Atmosphere: First Measurements Of A Lower Thermospheric Source, Patrick E. Sheese, Kaley A. Walker, Chris D. Boone, Peter F. Bernath, Bernd Funke

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Nitrous oxide (N2O) is an important anthropogenic greenhouse gas, as well as one of the most significant anthropogenic ozone-depleting substances in the stratosphere. The satellite-based instrument Atmospheric Chemistry Experiment-Fourier Transform Spectrometer has been observing the Earth's limb since 2004 and derives profiles of N2O volume mixing ratios in the upper troposphere to the lower thermosphere. The resulting climatology shows that N2O is continuously produced in the lower thermosphere via energetic particle precipitation and enhanced N2O is present at all latitudes, during all seasons. The results are consistent with an N2O …

Implications Of Motion Planning: Optimality And K-Survivability, Yu-Han Lyu Mar 2016

Implications Of Motion Planning: Optimality And K-Survivability, Yu-Han Lyu

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

We study motion planning problems, finding trajectories that connect two configurations of a system, from two different perspectives: optimality and survivability. For the problem of finding optimal trajectories, we provide a model in which the existence of optimal trajectories is guaranteed, and design an algorithm to find approximately optimal trajectories for a kinematic planar robot within this model. We also design an algorithm to build data structures to represent the configuration space, supporting optimal trajectory queries for any given pair of configurations in an obstructed environment. We are also interested in planning paths for expendable robots moving in a threat …

Pharmaceutical Contaminants As Stressors On Rocky Intertidal And Estuarine Organisms: A Case Study Of Fluoxetine, Joseph Richard Peters Mar 2016

Pharmaceutical Contaminants As Stressors On Rocky Intertidal And Estuarine Organisms: A Case Study Of Fluoxetine, Joseph Richard Peters

Dissertations and Theses

Contaminants such as pharmaceuticals are of increasing concern due to their ubiquitous use and persistence in surface waters worldwide. Limited attention has been paid to the effects of pharmaceuticals on marine life, despite widespread detection of these contaminants in the marine environment. Of the existing studies, the majority assess the negative effects of pharmaceuticals over an exposure period of 30 days or less and focus on cellular and subcellular biomarkers. Longer studies are required to determine if chronic contaminant exposure poses risks to marine life at environmentally relevant concentrations. Also scarce in the literature is examination of whole organism effects …

Engineering Interfacial Energy Profile By Changing The Substrate Terminating Plane In Perovskite Heterointerfaces, S. Roy, Alim Solmaz, John D. Burton, Mark Huijben, Guus Rijnders, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal, T. Banerjee

Evgeny Tsymbal Publications

Atomically engineered oxide heterointerfaces show a range of novel phenomena not present in their bulk form, thus providing an additional knob to tune the functional properties across such interfaces. Here we show that for an oxide Schottky interface between metallic SrRuO3 and semiconducting Nb doped SrTiO3 (Nb:STO) the terminating surface of the substrate plays a crucial role in determining the electronic transport across it. Interestingly this is achieved by engineering a monolayer of a charge-neutral SrO layer across the Schottky interface and not by the insertion of charged layers at the interface, as has been demonstrated earlier. These …

A Systems Approach To Animal Communication, Eileen A. Hebets, Andrew B. Barron, Christopher N. Balakrishnan, Mark E. Hauber, Paul H. Mason, Kim L. Hoke

Eileen Hebets Publications

Why animal communication displays are so complex and how they have evolved are active foci of research with a long and rich history. Progress towards an evolutionary analysis of signal complexity, however, has been constrained by a lack of hypotheses to explain similarities and/or differences in signalling systems across taxa. To address this, we advocate incorporating a systems approach into studies of animal communication—an approach that includes comprehensive experimental designs and data collection in combination with the implementation of systems concepts and tools. A systems approach evaluates overall display architecture, including how components interact to alter function, and how function …
