Cca-Secure Keyed-Fully Homomorphic Encryption, Junzuo Lai, Deng, Robert H., Changshe Ma, Kouichi Sakurai, Jian Weng Mar 2016

Cca-Secure Keyed-Fully Homomorphic Encryption, Junzuo Lai, Deng, Robert H., Changshe Ma, Kouichi Sakurai, Jian Weng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

To simultaneously achieve CCA security and homomorphic property for encryption, Emura et al. introduced a new cryptographic primitive named keyed-homomorphic encryption, in which homomorphic ciphertext manipulations can only be performed by someone holding a devoted evaluation key which, by itself, does not enable decryption. A keyed-homomorphic encryption scheme should provide CCA2 security when the evaluation key is unavailable to the adversary and remain CCA1-secure when the evaluation key is exposed. While existing keyed-homomorphic encryption schemes only allow simple computations on encrypted data, our goal is to construct CCA-secure keyed-fully homomorphic encryption (keyed-FHE) capable of evaluating any functions on encrypted data …

A Large Scale Study Of Multiple Programming Languages And Code Quality, Pavneet Singh Kochhar, Withthige Dinusha Ruchira Wijedasa, David Lo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Nowadays, most software use multiple programming languages to implement certain functionalities based on the strengths and weaknesses of different languages. Researchers in the past have studied the impact of independent programming languages on software quality, however, there has been little or no research on the impact of multiple languages on the quality of software. Does the use of multiple languages cause more bugs? Are certain languages when used with other languages make software more bug prone? What are the relationships between multi-language usage and various bug categories? In this study, we perform a large scale empirical investigation to shed light …

Patterns And Sources Of Anthropogenic Contaminants In The Otter Creek Watershed, Madison County, Kentucky, Elijah D. Wolfe, Walter S. Borowski, Jacob L. Robin Mar 2016

Patterns And Sources Of Anthropogenic Contaminants In The Otter Creek Watershed, Madison County, Kentucky, Elijah D. Wolfe, Walter S. Borowski, Jacob L. Robin

EKU Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Stream systems are often affected by anthropogenic contaminants that affect water quality and stream ecosystems. Land use determines the type and quantity of contaminants present in natural waters. The Otter Creek watershed (170 km2; Madison County, Kentucky) consists predominantly of pasture and rural housing, with some cropland. The basin also receives runoff from the town of Richmond and a sewage treatment plant operates within the watershed. We measured concentrations of nutrients (phosphate, ammonium, nitrate) and fecal microbes to discover levels of anthropogenic contaminants affecting water quality and to identify contaminant sources.

We sampled 4 times in the summer …

An Adaptive Wireless Passive Human Detection Via Fine-Grained Physical Layer Information, Liangyi Gong, Wu Yang, Zimu Zhou, Dapeng Man, Haibin Cai, Xiancun Zhou, Zheng Yang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Wireless device-free passive human detection is a key enabler for a range of indoor location-based services such as asset security, emergency responses, privacy-preserving children and elderly monitoring, etc. Since the feature of received signal varies with different multipath propagation conditions, an labor-intensive on-site calibration procedure is almost indispensable to decide the optimal scenario-specific threshold for human detection. Such overhead, however, impedes readily and fast deployment of wireless device-free human detection systems in practical indoor environments. In this work, we explore PHY layer multipath profiling information to extract a novel quantitative metric Ks as an indicator for link sensitivity, and further …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The fault detection of electrical or mechanical anomalies in induction motors has been a challenging problem for researchers over decades to ensure the safety and economic operations of industrial processes. To address this issue, this paper studies the stator current data obtained from inverter-fed laboratory induction motors and investigates the unique signatures of the healthy and faulty motors with the aim of developing knowledge based fault detection method for performing online detection of motor fault problems, such as broken-rotor-bar and bearing faults. Stator current data collected from induction motors were analyzed by leveraging fast Fourier transform (FFT), and the FFT …

Exploration Of Learning Gained Through Coderdojo Coding Activities, Irene Sheridan, Deirdre Goggin, Linda O'Sullivan

Conference Papers

In an increasingly digital world there is a considerable and growing divide between those who are considered to be digitally literate and those who are not. In addition, among those who are digitally literate, there is a divide between those capable of engaging with technology end products and applications as competent users and those capable of developing software themselves; between users and creators. As technology becomes more pervasive in our society it has impacts in most aspects of life, including education, health, culture and work. In terms of the workplace impact it is clear that the currently reported skills deficits, …

Development Of High-Order PN Models For Radiative Heat Transfer In Special Geometries And Boundary Conditions, Wenjun Ge, Michael F. Modest, Somesh Roy

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

The high-order spherical harmonics () method for 2-D Cartesian domains is extracted from the 3-D formulation. The number of equations and intensity coefficients reduces to (N+1)2/4 in the 2-D Cartesian formulation compared with N(N+1)/2 for the general 3-D formulation. The Marshak boundary conditions are extended to solve problems with nonblack and mixed diffuse-specular surfaces. Additional boundary conditions for specified radiative wall flux, for symmetry/specular reflection boundaries have also been developed. The mathematical details of the formulations and their implementation in the OpenFOAM finite volume based CFD software platform are presented. The accuracy and computational cost of the 2-D Cartesian are …

Lineations And Structural Mapping Of Io's Paterae And Mountains: Implications For Internal Stresses, Alexandra Anne Ahern Mar 2016

Lineations And Structural Mapping Of Io's Paterae And Mountains: Implications For Internal Stresses, Alexandra Anne Ahern

Theses and Dissertations

Io, the most volcanically active body in the solar system, also has some of the tallest and steepest mountains. The mountains seem to be tectonic in origin, yet the methods of their formation have not been decisively constrained and their associations with volcanic paterae are yet unclear. We have compiled global spatial statistics on mountain dimensions and orientations, lineations attributed to structures, straight patera margins, and patera dimensions in order to better define their genetic relationships and the mechanisms forming each type of feature. Additionally, we have produced 4 regional structural maps of mountain complexes and have proposed tectonic histories. …

A Critical Discourse Analysis Of Strategies For Change In New Jersey’S Teacher Evaluations: How Principals Make Meaning Of The Danielson Framework For Teaching, Sara Jane Van Ness Mar 2016

A Critical Discourse Analysis Of Strategies For Change In New Jersey’S Teacher Evaluations: How Principals Make Meaning Of The Danielson Framework For Teaching, Sara Jane Van Ness

Theses and Dissertations

In recent years, education in the United States has been framed within a context of crisis where American students have been perceived as unable to compete with their international peers in an increasingly competitive global environment. Some responses to this perceived crisis included reforms, which changed teacher evaluation policies. In New Jersey, the Teacher Effectiveness and Accountability for the Children of New Jersey (TeachNJ) Act mandated that districts use a state-approved model for evaluations, the most popular of which was the Danielson Framework for Teaching (FFT). The FFT has become an integral part of teacher evaluation reform, and this study …

The study utilized a semi-structured interview approach to identify phenomena that are related to integrated STEM education by addressing the question, what are the critical components of an integrated STEM definition and what critical factors are necessary for an integrated STEM definition’s implementation? Thirteen expert practitioners were identified and interviewed. The interviews were transcribed and analyzed for content in three different ways, by person, by interview question, and across all interviews using exploratory data analysis methods. Ten identified phenomena were grouped into two classes: structural implementation phenomena and interpersonal implementation phenomena. The structural implementation phenomena were: subject integration/project-based learning/design-based education, …

How Readers Discover Content In Scholarly Publications, Tracy Gardner, Simon Inger Mar 2016

How Readers Discover Content In Scholarly Publications, Tracy Gardner, Simon Inger

Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.

This report is the output of a large-scale survey of readers of scholarly publications (n=40439) and their behaviour in the discovery of journal articles and online books. The survey was conducted during October, November, and December of 2015. While usage statistics and analytics gathered by publishers, libraries and intermediaries can give us a partial view of discovery behaviour, there are many gaps in the knowledge that these can provide which we have endeavoured to fill by asking readers what tools they use in discovery.6

This survey builds upon previous surveys conducted by the authors in 2005, 2008 and 2012. For …

Furthering The Debate On Globalization’S Origins: New Evidence, Edward P. Leffler Mar 2016

Furthering The Debate On Globalization’S Origins: New Evidence, Edward P. Leffler

Journal of Global Business Insights

Throughout recorded human history there have been small shifts in how humans have interacted with each other. The ancient empires of the Far East, Near East, and Europe emerged from the city and city-states, tribe and communities began to trade with each other, written language allowed for the transference of knowledge between cultures and across the span of time. Of these monumental shifts there have been few. The most recent of these event thresholds is Globalization. Globalization is here, for our benefit or loss, and has begun to affect every part of our society: from the goods we consume, to …

Scale Invariant Jet Suppression Across The Black Hole Mass Scale, David Garofalo, Chandra B. Singh Mar 2016

Scale Invariant Jet Suppression Across The Black Hole Mass Scale, David Garofalo, Chandra B. Singh

Faculty Articles

We provide a schematic framework for understanding observations of jet suppression in soft state black hole X-ray binaries based on the Blandford-Payne process and the net magnetic flux threading the black hole. Due to the geometrical thinness of soft state disks, mass-loading of field lines is ineffective compared to both geometrically thick disks as well as thin disks with greater black hole threading flux, a simple physical picture that allows us to understand the weakness of jets in radiatively efficient thin disks accreting in the prograde direction around high-spinning black holes. Despite a simplicity that forbids insights into the complexity …

Equilibrium Circulation And Stress Distribution In Viscoelastic Creeping Flow, Joseph A. Biello, Becca Thomases Mar 2016

Equilibrium Circulation And Stress Distribution In Viscoelastic Creeping Flow, Joseph A. Biello, Becca Thomases

Mathematics Sciences: Faculty Publications

An analytic, asymptotic approximation of the nonlinear steady-state equations for viscoelastic creeping flow, modeled by the Oldroyd-B equations with polymer stress diffusion, is derived. Near the extensional stagnation point the flow stretches and aligns polymers along the outgoing streamlines of the stagnation point resulting in a stress-island, or birefringent strand. The polymer stress diffusion coefficient is used, both as an asymptotic parameter and a regularization parameter. The structure of the singular part of the polymer stress tensor is a Gaussian aligned with the incoming streamline of the stagnation point a smoothed δ-distribution whose width is proportional to the square-root of …

Determination Of Critical Nucleation Number For A Single Nucleation Amyloid-Β Aggregation Model, Preetam Ghosh, Ashuwin Vaidya, Amit Kumar, Vijayaraghavan Rangachari

Department of Mathematics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Aggregates of amyloid-β (Aβ) peptide are known to be the key pathological agents in Alzheimer disease (AD). Aβ aggregates to form large, insoluble fibrils that deposit as senile plaques in AD brains. The process of aggregation is nucleation-dependent in which the formation of a nucleus is the rate-limiting step, and controls the physiochemical fate of the aggregates formed. Therefore, understanding the properties of nucleus and pre-nucleation events will be significant in reducing the existing knowledge-gap in AD pathogenesis. In this report, we have determined the plausible range of critical nucleation number (n*, the number of monomers associated within the nucleus …

Single-Top Transverse-Momentum Distributions At Approximate Nnlo, Nikolaos Kidonakis Mar 2016

Single-Top Transverse-Momentum Distributions At Approximate Nnlo, Nikolaos Kidonakis

Faculty Articles

I present approximate next-to-next-to-leading-order (aNNLO) transverse-momentum (pT) distributions in single-top production processes. The aNNLO results are derived from next-to-next-to-leading-logarithm (NNLL) resummation of soft-gluon corrections in the differential cross section. Single-top as well as single-antitop pT distributions are shown in t-channel, s-channel, and tW production for LHC energies.

Search For The Rare Decay D^{0}→Γγ At Belle, N. K. Nisar Et Al., D. Joffe

Faculty Articles

We search for the rare radiative decay D 0 → γγ using a data sample with an integrated luminosity of 832 fb−1 recorded by the Belle detector at the KEKB e +e − asymmetric-energy collider. We find no statistically significant signal and set an upper limit on the branching fraction of B(D 0 → γγ) < 8.5 × 10−7 at 90% confidence level. This is the most restrictive limit on the decay channel to date.

Inclusive And Exclusive Measurements Of B Decays To Χ_{C1} And Χ_{C2} At Belle, V. Bhardwaj Et Al., D. Joffe

Faculty Articles

We report inclusive and exclusive measurements for χc1 and χc2 production in B decays. We measure B(B → χc1X)= (3.03 ± 0.05(stat) ± 0.24(syst)) × 10−3 and B(B → χc2X)= (0.70 ± 0.06(stat) ± 0.10(syst)) × 10−3 . For the first time, χc2 production in exclusive B decays in the modes B 0 → χc2π −K+ and B + → χc2π +π −K+ has been observed, along with first evidence for the B + → χc2π +K0 S decay mode. For χc1 production, we report the first observation in the B + → χc1π +π −K+, B 0 → χc1π …

Towards Improved Estimates Of Upper Ocean Energetics, Alexander Grant Wineteer Mar 2016

Towards Improved Estimates Of Upper Ocean Energetics, Alexander Grant Wineteer

Master's Theses

The energy exchanged between the atmosphere and the ocean is an important parameter in understanding the Earth’s climate. One way of quantifying this energy exchange is through the use of “wind work,” or the work done on the ocean by the wind. Since wind work is calculated according to the interaction between ocean surface currents and surface wind stress, a number of surface current decompositions can be used to decompose wind work calculations. In this research, geostrophic, ageostrophic, Ekman, and total current decompositions are all used to calculate wind work. Geostrophic currents are formed by the balance of surface pressure …

A work in progress to define a metrics set for requirements. Metrics are defined that apply to either the entire requirements set (requirements document as a whole) or individual atomic (or singular, individual) requirements statements. Requirements are identified with standard names and a identification scheme and include both subjective and objective measures.

An example metric for the full set of requirements: Rd2 - Requirements Consistency, Is the set of atomic requirements internally consistent, with no contradictions, no duplication between individual requirements? An example of a metric for a single requirement: Ra4 - Requirement Verifiability, How adequately can this requirement be …

The Need For Research In Broadening Participation, Tiffany Barnes, George K. Thiruvathukal Mar 2016

The Need For Research In Broadening Participation, Tiffany Barnes, George K. Thiruvathukal

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Underrepresentation in computing is a global problem, marked by a disturbing lack of access to computing resources and education among people underrepresented by race, ethnicity, gender, income, disability, and sexual-orientation status. It is urgent that we address this divide between those with and without the knowledge to create computational artifacts or even basic functional literacy. Important alliances for broadening participation (BP) are catalyzing efforts to engage more people in computing, but they are not enough. We need solid research as well.

The Impact Of The Exploring Computer Science Instructional Model In Chicago Public Schools, Lucia Dettori, Ronald I. Greenberg, Steven Mcgee, Dale Reed

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

As part of the Taste of Computing project, the Exploring Computer Science (ECS) instructional model has been expanded to many high schools in the Chicago Public Schools system. We report on initial outcomes showing that students value the ECS course experience, resulting in increased awareness of and interest in the field of computer science. We compare these results by race and gender. The data provide a good basis for exploring the impact of meaningful computer science instruction on students from groups underrepresented in computing; of several hundred students surveyed, nearly half were female, and over half were Hispanic or African-American.

Publications

Background

Dogs in the United States are hosts to a diverse range of ticks and tick-borne pathogens, including A. phagocytophilum, an important emerging canine and human pathogen. Previously, a Companion Animal Parasite Council (CAPC)-sponsored workshop proposed factors purported to be associated with the infection risk for tick-transmitted pathogens in dogs in the United States, including climate conditions, socioeconomic characteristics, local topography, and vector distribution.

Methods

Approximately four million test results from routine veterinary diagnostic tests from 2011–2013, which were collected on a county level across the contiguous United States, are statistically analyzed with the proposed factors via logistic regression …

Enhancing Teacher Education In Primary Mathematics With Mobile Technologies, Sandy Schuck Mar 2016

Enhancing Teacher Education In Primary Mathematics With Mobile Technologies, Sandy Schuck

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Abstract

A challenge of teacher education is to produce graduate primary school teachers who are confident and competent teachers of mathematics. Various approaches to primary school teacher education in mathematics have been investigated, but primary teacher education graduates still tend to be diffident in their teaching of mathematics. In an age where personal use of mobile technologies is becoming ubiquitous, such technologies could provide a conduit into making mathematics teaching and learning more accessible to primary teacher education students. This paper introduces the use of a pedagogical framework which can scaffold mobile learning in mathematics teacher education programs. The paper …

Professional Development Of Elementary And Science Teachers In A Summer Science Camp: Changing Nature Of Science Conceptions, Ayhan Karaman Mar 2016

Professional Development Of Elementary And Science Teachers In A Summer Science Camp: Changing Nature Of Science Conceptions, Ayhan Karaman

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Many countries all over the world have recently integrated nature of science (NOS) concepts into their science education standards. Providing professional support to teachers about NOS concepts is crucially important for successful implementation of the standards. For this purpose, a summer science camp was offered to elementary and science teachers. The main objective of this research study was to investigate the progress in specific NOS concepts made by the participant teachers. The responses of the teachers regarding the NOS concepts were obtained through VNOS-C questionnaire and scored using a rubric developed by McDonald (2008). The scored teacher responses were analyzed …
