Xenoestrogens From Household Plastics Bind Estrogen Receptors And Affect Cell Proliferation, Susan G. Hurley, Brett R. Lackey, Patricia L. Tate, Sandra L. Gray
Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science
Xenoestrogens are “foreign” chemicals or compounds that interact with estrogen receptors as either agonists or antagonists to interfere with endocrine system function. Xenoestrogens include phytoestrogens, pesticides, industrial by- products and synthetic estrogens. In this study, consumer plasticware, including baby bottles and food storage containers, were found to release xenoestrogenic compounds that bound to ERα and ERβ and affected cell proliferation.

High Temperature Electrochemical Engineering And Clean Energy Systems, Brenda L. Garcia-Diaz, Luke Olson, Michael Martinez-Rodriguez, Roderick Fuentes, Hector Colon-Mercado, Josh Gray
Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science
Global power demand is projected to more than double by 2050 and meeting this increased power demand will require maintaining or increasing power output from all existing energy sources while adding a large amount of new capacity. The power sources that have the greatest opportunity to fulfill this demand gap over this time period are clean energy sources including solar and nuclear power. One of the areas of expertise that SRNL has been applying to help with a variety of clean energy technologies is in high temperature electrochemistry. Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) in collaboration with industrial and university partners …

The Engaged Microbiologist: Bringing The Microbiological Sciences To The K-12 Community, David J. Westenberg
Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works
Exposing K-12 students to cutting edge science that impacts their daily lives can bring classroom lessons to life. Citizen-science projects are an excellent way to bring high-level science to the classroom and help satisfy one of the cornerstone concepts of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), "engaging in practices that scientists and engineers actually use." This can be a daunting task for teachers who may lack the background or resources to integrate these projects into the classroom. This is where scientific societies such as the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) can play a critical role. ASM encourages its members to …

Laser ablation of a Near Earth Object (NEO) on a collision course with Earth produces a cloud of ejecta which exerts a thrust on the NEO, deflecting it from its original trajectory. Ablation may be performed from afar by illuminating an Earth-targeting asteroid or comet with a stand-off “DE-STAR” system consisting of a large phased-array laser in Earth orbit. Alternatively, a much smaller stand-on “DE-STARLITE” system may travel alongside the target, slowly deflecting it from nearby over a long period. This paper presents orbital simulations comparing the effectiveness of both systems across a range of laser and NEO parameters. Simulated …
T6ss Expression Of Vibrio Parahaemolyticus In Intraspecific Competition, Alex Campbell
T6ss Expression Of Vibrio Parahaemolyticus In Intraspecific Competition, Alex Campbell
Baker/Koob Endowments Awarded Projects
The rise of antibiotic-resistant bacteria has reached an alarming level. The recently discovered type VI secretion system (T6SS) appears to be a bacterial defense mechanism that could potentially become involved with addressing this concern. Previous studies suggest Vibrio spp. may express T6SS. In this study, Vibrio parahaemolyticus, a common foodborne pathogen, is used as a model to study T6SS. The objectives of this study were to evaluate culturing conditions that would stimulate swarming motility in strains of V. parahaemolyticus and to detect for the presence of T6SS based on phenotypic criteria. Different media (BHI, TSAS), agar concentration (0.7%, 1%, 2%) …

Roborodentia 2016 - Autonomous Omnidirectional Ring Moving Robot, Matthew Ng, Darus Holmgren, Mytch Johnson
Baker/Koob Endowments Awarded Projects
Our team created an autonomous omnidirectional driving robot that was capable of small micro adjustments to accurately follow the black guide line using four motors. This omnidirectional robot used a linear potentiometer to raise and lower the grabbing mechanism. The grabbing mechanism was a claw with 3D printed extensions which increased the amount of rings that could be picked up in a single motion. We expect this methodology of quick driving and streamlined movements would be a deciding factor in scoring points for our team.

Towards Radio Frequency Detection Of High-Energy Neutrinos And Cosmic Rays, Caroline Paciaroni
Baker/Koob Endowments Awarded Projects
The goal of the project was to measure the impulse response of a bicone antenna used in an experiment done at the SLAC National Laboratory in 2014.The SLAC T-‐510 experiment measured a particle air shower in a lab environment by directing the SLAC particle beam into a dielectric material and measuring, with antennas, the resultant radio-‐frequency signal produced. The experiment is significant to understanding how extremely high-energy particles such as cosmic rays and neutrinos interact. These high-energy particles carry information about the extremely volatile events happening in universe.Potential sources of these particles include Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) and Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs).This …

Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports
It is a common practice to name a university’s buildings, fields, and monuments after its past presidents, prominent administrators, or gracious donors. Starting from the school’s earliest days as a two-year vocational institution and continuing today as a four-year state university, Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo frequently named buildings after notable individuals. But what distinguishes these certain people to be recognized with their name on a lasting artifact of this prestigious school? And how does the naming process operate? This paper explores why specific administrators and faculty between 1928-1988 were commemorated with their names on buildings at Cal Poly, while …

Stability And Spatial Chaos In 2d Hénon System, Fuyan Sun, Zongwang Lü
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
This paper is concerned with two-dimensional(2-D) discrete system of the following form xm+1,n +axm,n+1 = f (m, (1+a)xm,n,bxm−1,n), where a,m,b is a real parameters. We investigate the fixed planes, stability of the fixed planes and spatial chaos behavior for this system. A stability condition for the fixed plane is given, and it is proven analytically that for some parameter values the system has a transversal homoclinic orbit, which is a verification of this system to be chaotic in the sense of Li-Yorke. These results extend the corresponding results in the one-dimensional (1-D) H´enon system: xm+1,n0 = f (m, xm,n0,bxm−1,n0 ), where …

Families Of Pairing-Friendly Elliptic Curves From A Polynomial Modification Of The Dupont-Enge-Morain Method, Hyang-Sook Lee, Pa-Ra Lee
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
A general method for constructing families of pairing-friendly elliptic curves is the Brezing-Weng method. In many cases, the Brezing-Weng method generates curves with discriminant D = 1 or 3 and restricts the form of r(x) to be a cyclotomic polynomial. However, since we desire a greater degree of randomness on curve parameters to maximize security, there have been studies to develop algorithms that are applicable for almost arbitrary values of D and more various forms of r(x). In this paper, we suggest a new method to construct families of pairing-friendly elliptic curves with variable D and no restriction on the …

A New Model Suggestion To Estimate The Probability Value In Occupational Health And Safety Risk Assessment, Omer Biyikli, Emel Kizilkaya Aydogan
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
The basis of activities in Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) is risk assessment in the workplace. Risk assessment allows the execution of OHS activities within a plan. The ranking of activities in this plan is done according to the risk value. As this plan may require 3-4 years or more, on condition that the calculation of the plan is correct, sources may be used effectively. The guidelines regarding the risk assessment task are outlined by national and international regulations. How is the risk value calculated? Many methods have been developed for the calculation of the risk value. It can be …

Why Lp-Methods In Signal And Image Processing: A Fuzzy-Based Explanation, Fernando Cervantes, Bryan E. Usevitch, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
In signal and image processing, it is often beneficial to use semi-heuristic Lp-methods, i.e., methods that minimize the sum of the p-th powers of the discrepancies. In this paper, we show that a fuzzy-based analysis of the corresponding intuitive idea leads exactly to the Lp-methods.
Model-Order Reduction Using Interval Constraint Solving Techniques, Leobardo Valera, Martine Ceberio
Model-Order Reduction Using Interval Constraint Solving Techniques, Leobardo Valera, Martine Ceberio
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
Many natural phenomena can be modeled as ordinary or partial differential equations. A way to find solutions of such equations is to discretize them and to solve the corresponding (possibly) nonlinear large systems of equations.
Solving a large nonlinear system of equations is very computationally complex due to several numerical issues, such as high linear-algebra cost and large memory requirements. Model-Order Reduction (MOR) has been proposed as a way to overcome the issues associated with large dimensions, the most used approach for doing so being Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD). The key idea of POD is to reduce a large number …

A Reflection On Types, Simon. Peyton Jones, Stephanie Weirich, Richard A. Eisenberg, Dimitrios Vytiniotis
Computer Science Faculty Research and Scholarship
The ability to perform type tests at runtime blurs the line between statically-typed and dynamically-checked languages. Recent developments in Haskell’s type system allow even programs that use reflection to themselves be statically typed, using a type-indexed runtime representation of types called \𝗍𝖾𝗑𝗍𝗂𝗍{𝖳𝗒𝗉𝖾𝖱𝖾𝗉}\textit{TypeRep}. As a result we can build dynamic types as an ordinary, statically-typed library, on top of \𝗍𝖾𝗑𝗍𝗂𝗍{𝖳𝗒𝗉𝖾𝖱𝖾𝗉}\textit{TypeRep} in an open-world context.

Due to longer dynamical time-scales, the outskirts of early-type galaxies retain the footprint of their formation and assembly. Under the popular two-phase galaxy formation scenario, an initial in situ phase of star formation is followed by minor merging and accretion of ex situ stars leading to the expectation of observable transitions in the kinematics and stellar populations on large scales. However, observing the faint galactic outskirts is challenging, often leaving the transition unexplored. The large-scale, spatially resolved stellar kinematic data from the SAGES Legacy Unifying Galaxies and GlobularS (SLUGGS) survey are ideal for detecting kinematic transitions. We present kinematic maps …
