A Dynamic Bifurcation Criterion For Thermal Runaway During The Flash Sintering Of Ceramics, Joao Gustavo Mar 2016

A Dynamic Bifurcation Criterion For Thermal Runaway During The Flash Sintering Of Ceramics, Joao Gustavo

Electric Field Assisted Sintering and Related Phenomena Far From Equilibrium

In this work we mathematically model the densification of ceramics under flash sintering using a model based on a system of nonlinear differential equations. Approaches to analyze the system either by numerical solutions or via bifurcation theory are presented. The shown model explains the two main features of flash sintering: A characteristic electrical field threshold dependent on the temperature, and an incubation time to flash sintering.

Discipline-Based Education Research Group Speaker Series

Studies of interdisciplinary research teams indicate that team members struggle to achieve knowledge integration across disciplines. Knowledge integration across disciplines is at the heart of addressing important research challenges, such as impacts of global change, trade-offs between water, food, and energy production, and the need for sustainable cities. The EMBeRS Project is testing a new model for integrating knowledge across disciplines based on cognitive science theories of model-based reasoning. The project will create educational materials to train students to overcome the barriers to integrating knowledge across disciplines.

Issues arise due to the inability of team members to work collaboratively in …

Sustainable Whale-Watching For The Philippines: A Bioeconomic Model Of The Spinner Dolphin (Stenella Longirostris), Allison Jenny Santos Mar 2016

Sustainable Whale-Watching For The Philippines: A Bioeconomic Model Of The Spinner Dolphin (Stenella Longirostris), Allison Jenny Santos

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

Whale-watching provides economic opportunities worldwide and particularly proliferates in developing countries, such as the Philippines. The sustainability of whale-watching is increasingly debated as these activities also negatively impact cetaceans through changes in behavior, communication, habitat use, morbidity, mortality, and life-history parameters. This study evaluated the total annual cost, revenue, and profit of whale-watching operators in Bais, Philippines, and predicted the changes in the population for spinner dolphin Stenella longirostris with varying levels of whale-watching effort. Total revenue was 3,805,077 PHP ($92,478 USD) while total cost was 5,649,094 PHP ($137,294 USD) with a discount rate of ten percent. The total annual …

The first direct observation of time-reversal (T) violation in the system has been reported by the BaBar Collaboration, employing the method of Bañuls and Bernabéu. Given this, we generalize their analysis of the time-dependent T-violating asymmetry (AT) to consider different choices of CP tags for which the dominant amplitudes have the same weak phase. As one application, we find that it is possible to measure departures from the universality of sin⁡(2β) directly. If sin⁡(2β) is universal, as in the Standard Model, the method permits the direct determination of penguin effects in these channels. …

Topological insulators are potentially transformative quantum solids with metallic surface states which have Dirac band structure and are immune to disorder. Ubiquitous charged bulk defects, however, pull the Fermi energy into the bulk bands, denying access to surface charge transport. Here we demonstrate that irradiation with swift (B2.5MeV energy) electron beams allows to compensate these defects, bring the Fermi level back into the bulk gap and reach the charge neutrality point (CNP). Controlling the beam fluence, we tune bulk conductivity from p- (hole-like) to n-type (electron-like), crossing the Dirac point and back, while preserving the Dirac energy dispersion. The CNP …

Literature-Based Problems For Introductory Organic Chemistry Quizzes And Exams, Kevin M. Shea, David J. Gorin, Maren E. Buck

Chemistry: Faculty Publications

Literature-based problems expose students to current, real world applications of chemistry. These types of problems are often confined to graduate and advanced undergraduate courses. We describe incorporation of literature-based problems in Organic I and II courses on quizzes and exams. We give students at least 1 week to study and discuss portions of a paper, then ask students to answer quiz and exam questions based on the paper. Students show high levels of engagement with and interest in the primary chemical literature when faced with these types of assessments.

Production Of Biodiesel From Soybean Oil Using Supercritical Methanol, Shriyash Rajendra Deshpande Mar 2016

Production Of Biodiesel From Soybean Oil Using Supercritical Methanol, Shriyash Rajendra Deshpande

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The slow yet steady expansion of the global economies, has led to an increased demand for energy and fuel, which would eventually lead to shortage of fossil fuel resources in the near future. Consequently, researchers have been investigating other fuels like biodiesel. Biodiesel refers to the monoalkyl esters which can be derived from a wide range of sources like vegetable oils, animal fats, algae lipids and waste greases. Currently, biodiesel is largely produced by the conventional route, using an acid, a base or an enzyme catalyst. Drawbacks associated with this route result in higher production costs and longer processing times. …

Multiwavelength Study Of Quiescent States Of Mrk 421 With Unprecedented Hard X-Ray Coverage Provided By Nustar In 2013, P. T. Reynolds, Nustar, Veritas, Magic

Physical Sciences Publications

We present coordinated multiwavelength observations of the bright, nearby BL Lacertae object Mrk 421 taken in 2013 January–March, involving GASP-WEBT, Swift, NuSTAR, Fermi-LAT, MAGIC, VERITAS, and other collaborations and instruments, providing data from radio to very high energy (VHE) γ-ray bands. NuSTAR yielded previously unattainable sensitivity in the 3–79 keV range, revealing that the spectrum softens when the source is dimmer until the X-ray spectral shape saturates into a steep ${\rm{\Gamma }}\approx 3$ power law, with no evidence for an exponential cutoff or additional hard components up to ~80 keV. For the first time, we observed both the synchrotron and …

Bodies In Space/Bodies In Motion/Bodies In Character : Adolescents Bear Witness To Anne Frank., James S. Chisholm, Kathryn F. Whitmore

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Situated at the intersection of research on Holocaust education and embodied literacies this study examines how an arts-based instructional approach engaged middle school learners in developing empathetic perspectives on the Anne Frank narrative. We addressed the research question: What can adolescents who are using their bodies to gain empathy with Anne Frank teach us about embodied literacies? Digital images and video were used to generate a multimodal analytic method that combined focus group interviewing with the Semiotic Photo Response Protocol and Visual Discourse Analysis. Analyses of performance and visual arts texts illustrated how students layered their understandings as they recast …
