Effectiveness Of Structured Educational Modules For Primary School Teachers On The Knowledge And Skills In Identification Of Common Mental Health Problems In Selected Schools Of Bangalore District, Esther Shirley Daniel
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Session presented on Monday, July 27, 2015:
INTRODUCTION: The teacher plays a significant role in the promotion of the health of the children. Teachers spend most of the school hours with children and are familiar with them. They can detect the signs and symptoms of common mental health problems at the earliest in the classroom setting. It is estimated that out of 51 lakh children (6-11 years of age), approximately 5 lakh (9.8 %) children suffer from mental health problems in KaRNaka. But there is no organized school mental health programme for teachers in KaRNaka. There is no record of …
Influence Of Early Language Exposure On Children's Cognitive And Language Development, Lauren M. Head, Ashley Darcy Mahoney
Influence Of Early Language Exposure On Children's Cognitive And Language Development, Lauren M. Head, Ashley Darcy Mahoney
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Session presented on Sunday, July 26, 2015: Purpose: Early childhood represents a critical period for brain development, in which foundations for later learning are established. Brain development is shaped through environmental experiences, including language exposure and parental engagement. Research shows that low-income children hear 30 million less words than their more affluent peers by the age of 4, and that this word gap contributes to disparities in their educational outcomes. As interventions aimed at bridging the word gap develop, literature should be evaluated to examine the influence of early language exposure on children's neurodevelopment. Methods: An integrated review of literature …

Session presented on Sunday, July 26, 2015:
Constructal Law has been used in multiple sciences to illustrate how design can impede or enhance flow. This session will reveal how Constructal Law, physics, was used to study the design of the work environment as reported by staff and the care experience as reported by patients. The first half of this session will examine the work of staff from the USA who conduct care on wards in an acute care hospital with persistent excellent scores of performance. Use of statistics to show ward performance was limited once the best scores were achieved …
Integrating Culturally-Responsive, Locally Relevant Learning And Citizen Science Through Arctic And Earth Signs, Elena B. Sparrow, Katie V. Spellman
Integrating Culturally-Responsive, Locally Relevant Learning And Citizen Science Through Arctic And Earth Signs, Elena B. Sparrow, Katie V. Spellman
Research Posters
To build the capacity to navigate the challenges associated with a changing climate, learning in Arctic communities must not only increase knowledge, but also generate new knowledge as the rapid changes occur. Citizen science, the process whereby citizens (including K-12 students) are involved in science as researchers, presents a possible mechanism to meet this need. However, hypothesis-driven models of citizen science have been criticized for a disconnect between scientific agendas and the priorities and needs of diverse communities. The new education and research program at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, entitled Arctic and Earth SIGNs (STEM integrating GLOBE and NASA), …

Modeling The Extent Of Virus Removal In Waste Stabilization Ponds To Support Reuse Of Wastewater, Kelly James Vannoy
Modeling The Extent Of Virus Removal In Waste Stabilization Ponds To Support Reuse Of Wastewater, Kelly James Vannoy
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Waste stabilization ponds (WSPs) are one of the most prevalent types of domestic wastewater treatment technologies employed worldwide, and global stressors such as urbanization, population growth, climate change, and water scarcity have increased the demand for reusing treated wastewater. The safe reuse of treated wastewater in agriculture can ease water scarcity, aid in food production, and reduce environmental degradation from the discharge of wastewater effluent to surface waters. The ability to predict virus concentrations in wastewater effluent is an important criterion for determining whether wastewater is suitable for discharge to the environment or for reuse in agriculture. However, many uncertainties …

This article presents the development of an underwater gripper that utilizes soft robotics technology to delicately manipulate and sample fragile species on the deep reef. Existing solutions for deep sea robotic manipulation have historically been driven by the oil industry, resulting in destructive interactions with undersea life. Soft material robotics relies on compliant materials that are inherently impedance matched to natural environments and to soft or fragile organisms. We demonstrate design principles for soft robot end effectors, bench-top characterization of their grasping performance, and conclude by describing in situ testing at mesophotic depths. The result is the first use of …
Sticky Seeding In Discrete-Time Reversible-Threshold Networks, Gwen Spencer
Sticky Seeding In Discrete-Time Reversible-Threshold Networks, Gwen Spencer
Mathematics Sciences: Faculty Publications
When nodes can repeatedly update their behavior (as in agent-based models from computational social science or repeated-game play settings) the problem of optimal network seeding becomes very complex. For a popular spreading-phenomena model of binary-behavior updating based on thresholds of adoption among neighbors, we consider several planning problems in the design of Sticky Interventions: when adoption decisions are reversible, the planner aims to find a Seed Set where temporary intervention leads to long-term behavior change. We prove that completely converting a network at minimum cost is Ω(ln(OP T ))-hard to approximate and that maximizing conversion subject to a budget is …
Exciton Dynamics And Many Body Interactions In Layered Semiconducting Materials Revealed With Non-Linear Coherent Spectroscopy, Prasenjit Dey
Exciton Dynamics And Many Body Interactions In Layered Semiconducting Materials Revealed With Non-Linear Coherent Spectroscopy, Prasenjit Dey
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Atomically thin, semiconducting transition metal dichalogenides (TMDs), a special class of layered semiconductors, that can be shaped as a perfect two dimensional material, have garnered a lot of attention owing to their fascinating electronic properties which are achievable at the extreme nanoscale. In contrast to graphene, the most celebrated two-dimensional (2D) material thus far; TMDs exhibit a direct band gap in the monolayer regime. The presence of a non-zero bandgap along with the broken inversion symmetry in the monolayer limit brands semiconducting TMDs as the perfect candidate for future optoelectronic and valleytronics-based device application. These remarkable discoveries demand exploration of …

We consider soft gluon emission corrections to the production of a top-antitop pair in association with a Higgs boson at hadron colliders. In particular, we present a softgluon resummation formula for this production process and gather all elements needed to evaluate it at next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic order. We employ these results to obtain approximate next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) formulas, and implement them in a bespoke parton-level Monte Carlo program which can be used to calculate the total cross section along with arbitrary differential distributions. We use this tool to study the phenomenological impact of the approximate NNLO corrections, finding that they increase …
Educators' Perceptions Of The Importance And Intensity Of Supports In The General Education Classroom For Students With Individualized Education Plans, Stephanie N. Despain
Educators' Perceptions Of The Importance And Intensity Of Supports In The General Education Classroom For Students With Individualized Education Plans, Stephanie N. Despain
Theses and Dissertations
Federal law provides that all students are entitled to a free and appropriate education in the least restrictive environment (LRE). In order to educate students with disabilities in the LRE, educators need to provide supports to enhance meaningful engagement and success in the general education curriculum. Utilizing supports to increase engagement and human functioning is not a new concept, but it is one that has received increased attention due to scholarly efforts by the World Health Organization (WHO, 2001) and the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (AAIDD; Luckasson et al., 1992; Schalock et al., 2002; 2010). A major …
Powering The Planet: The Role Chemistry Plays In Solar Energy Technology, Amy M. Scott
Powering The Planet: The Role Chemistry Plays In Solar Energy Technology, Amy M. Scott
Climate Sustainability Lecture Series
Global energy demands are projected to double by 2050, according to the U.S. Department of Energy, and solar energy has the greatest potential as the most benign, universal resource for generating electricity. However, harnessing the solar energy efficiently and converting it towards useful forms of power that are compatible with our current infrastructure remains an elusive goal. Today’s solar energy utilization relies on silicon-based photovoltaic (PV) technology, which converts photon energy to electrical energy. The efficiency of these devices remains low (< 30%) and the cost of processing silicon and installing solar panels in homes makes PV uneconomical compared to the current price of electricity. Research efforts towards developing new inorganic and organic materials for thin film PV to replace silicon are currently underway. Organic materials are particularly interesting from the standpoint of developing simple, cheap materials that can be easily tailored for future PV devices. The future of solar energy utilization relies on developing solar paints for vehicles, solar shingles for rooftops, and spray-on solar ink for small device applications, but continued fundamental research is needed for decreasing cost and improving efficiency for next generation devices.

Searching For Evidence-Based Practice: A Survey Of Empirical Studies On Curricular Interventions Measuring And Reporting Fidelity Of Implementation Published During 2004-2013, Lisa Foster, Tracy C. Missett
Faculty Publications and Presentations
In an environment of accountability, the development of evidence-based practices is expected. To demonstrate that a practice is evidence based, quality indicators of rigorous methodology should be present including indications that teachers implementing an intervention have done so with fidelity to its design. Because evidence-based practices assume fidelity of implementation (FOI), failure to establish FOI limits the conclusions that can be drawn from any outcome evaluation. This study surveys the gifted education literature to ascertain the degree to which FOI has been assessed, reported, and tied to measured outcomes in curriculum intervention efficacy studies and outcome evaluations. Of the 11 …

Endogenous Competence And A Limit To The Condorcet Jury Theorem, Bryan C. Mccannon, Paul Walker
Endogenous Competence And A Limit To The Condorcet Jury Theorem, Bryan C. Mccannon, Paul Walker
Economics Faculty Working Papers Series
The seminal contribution, known as the Condorcet Jury Theorem, observes that under a specific set of conditions an increase in the size of a group tasked with making a decision leads to an improvement in the group's ability to make a good decision. An assumption under-appreciated is that the competency of the members of the group is assumed to be exogenous. In numerous applications, members of the group make investments to improve the accuracy of their decision making (e.g. pre-meeting efforts). We consider the collective action problem that arises. We show that if competence is endogenous, then increases in the …

Analysis And Processing Of Human Electroretinogram, Abdulrahman Mohammad Alaql
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Electroretinagram (ERG) is the recording of electrical activity of retinal cells elicited by light stimulation, which has been widely used to help diagnose different types of retinal dysfunctions. The ERG response signal is a short non-stationary signal that contains overlapping components. Different Digital Signal Processing (DSP) techniques are investigated using MATLAB to study the time-frequency responses of the ERG signal such as Short Time Fourier Transform (STFT), Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT) and Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT). The Photopic ERG signal was processed and analyzed in this thesis and the results of each technique have been investigated in detail. The Photopic …

Rate Equations For Nitrogen Molecules In Ultrashort And Intense X-Ray Pulses, Ji Cai Liu, Nora Berrah, Lorenz S. Cederbaum, James P. Cryan, James M. Glownia, Kenneth J. Schafer, Christian Buth
Faculty Publications
We study theoretically the quantum dynamics of nitrogen molecules (N2) exposed to intense and ultrafast x-rays at a wavelength of 1.1 nm (1100eV photon energy) from the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) free electron laser. Molecular rate equations are derived to describe the intertwined photoionization, decay, and dissociation processes occurring for N2. This model complements our earlier phenomenological approaches, the single-atom, symmetric-sharing, and fragmentation-matrix models of 2012 (J. Chem. Phys. 136 214310). Our rate-equations are used to obtain the effective pulse energy at the sample and the time scale for the dissociation of the metastable dication . This leads to …

Manufactured nanoparticles (NPs) are increasingly being used for commercial purposes and certain NP types have been shown to have broad spectrum antibacterial activity. In contrast, their activities against fungi and fungi-like oomycetes are less studied. Here, we examined the potential of two types of commercially available Zn NPs (Zn NPs and ZnO NPs) to inhibit spore germination and infectivity on tobacco leaves resulting from exposure to the fungi-like oomycete pathogen Peronospora tabacina (P. tabacina). Both types of NPs, as well as ZnCl2 and bulk ZnO control treatments, inhibited spore germination compared to a blank control. ZnO ENMs …

Hawking Radiation Screening And Penrose Process Shielding In The Kerr Black Hole, Eamon Mccaughey
Articles
The radial motion of massive particles in the equatorial plane of aKerr black hole is considered. Screening of the Hawking radiation and shielding of the Penrose process are examined (both inside and outside the ergosphere) and their effect on the evaporation of the black hole is studied. In particular, the locus and width of a classically forbidden region and their dependence on the particle’s angular momentum and energy is analysed. Tunneling of particles between the boundaries of this region is considered and the transmission coefficient determined.

A Six-Stage Framework For Evolutionary Is Research Using Path Models: Conceptual Development And A Social Networking Illustration, Ned Kock, Murad Moqbel
Information Systems Faculty Publications
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to fill a gap in evolutionary theorizing in the field of information systems. Evolutionary theorizing has recently been added as a useful tool to the research repertoire of information systems investigators. However, the literature on evolutionary theorizing and related empirical research lacks a clear framework that explicitly shows how information systems researchers can go, step-by-step, from a generic model of the evolution of traits in our ancestral past to a more specific model depicting the effects of technology facilitation of those traits among modern humans. The purpose of this study is to fill …
