A historical problem for indirect exoplanet detection has been contending with the intrinsic variability of the host star. If the variability is periodic, it can easily mimic various exoplanet signatures, such as radial velocity (RV) variations that originate with the stellar surface rather than the presence of a planet. Here we present an update for the HD 99492 planetary system, using new RV and photometric measurements from the Transit Ephemeris Refinement and Monitoring Survey. Our extended time series and subsequent analyses of the Ca ii H&K emission lines show that the host star has an activity cycle of ∼13 years. …

Orbital Simulations On Deflecting Near Earth Objects By Directed Energy, Qicheng Zhang, Kevin J. Walsh, Carl Melis, Gary Hughes, Philip M. Lubin Mar 2016

Orbital Simulations On Deflecting Near Earth Objects By Directed Energy, Qicheng Zhang, Kevin J. Walsh, Carl Melis, Gary Hughes, Philip M. Lubin

Statistics

Laser ablation of a near-Earth object (NEO) on a collision course with Earth produces a cloud of ejecta that exerts a thrust on the NEO, deflecting it from its original trajectory. Ablation may be performed from afar by illuminating an Earth-targeting asteroid or comet with a stand-off "DE-STAR" system consisting of a large phased-array laser in Earth orbit. Alternatively, a much smaller stand-on "DE-STARLITE" system may travel alongside the target, slowly deflecting it from nearby over a long period. This paper presents orbital simulations comparing the effectiveness of both systems across a range of laser and NEO parameters. Simulated parameters …

Hydrogen Bonded And Stacked Geometries Of The Temozolomide Dimer, Okuma Emile Kasende, Jules Tshishimbi Muya, Vincent De Paul Nzuwah-Nziko, Steve Scheiner Mar 2016

Hydrogen Bonded And Stacked Geometries Of The Temozolomide Dimer, Okuma Emile Kasende, Jules Tshishimbi Muya, Vincent De Paul Nzuwah-Nziko, Steve Scheiner

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Dispersion-corrected Density Functional Theory (DFT) and MP2 quantum chemical methods are used to examine homodimers of temozolomide (TMZ). Of the twelve dimer configurations found to be minima, the antarafacial stacked dimer is the most favored, lower in energy than coplanar dimers which are stabilized by H-bonds. The comparison between B3LYP and B3LYP-D binding energies points to dispersion as a primary factor in stabilizing the stacked geometries. CO(π)→CO(π*)charge transfers between amide groups in the global minimum are identified by NBO, as well as a pair of weak CH∙∙N H-bonds. AIM analysis of the electron density provides an alternative description which includes …

Poly(Ester Amide)S With Pendant Azobenzenes: Multi-Responsive Self-Immolative Moieties For Modulating Polymer Assemblies, Andrew D. Wong, Alex Prinzen, Elizabeth Gillies

Chemistry Publications

Azobenzenes are well-known for their trans–cis photoisomerization, but it was recently demonstrated that azobenzene derivatives could also undergo reduction to trigger a 1,6-elimination and initiate de- polymerization of a self-immolative polymer. Herein we explore the optimization of azobenzenes as reduction-sensitive moieties, and their incorporation into functional materials. A library of azobenzenes with electron-withdrawing groups was synthesized, and their rates of reduction by hydrazine were deter- mined. Unexpectedly, a 2-Cl substituent increased the rate of reduction more than other electronegative or sterically-demanding substituents. Next, a new diester monomer containing the 2-Cl-azobenzene was synthesized and incorporated into a poly(ester amide) (PEA) backbone, …

On Realization Graphs Of Degree Sequences, Michael D. Barrus Mar 2016

On Realization Graphs Of Degree Sequences, Michael D. Barrus

Mathematics Faculty Publications

Given the degree sequence d of a graph, the realization graph of d is the graph having as its vertices the labeled realizations of d, with two vertices adjacent if one realization may be obtained from the other via an edge-switching operation. We describe a connection between Cartesian products in realization graphs and the canonical decomposition of degree sequences described by R.I. Tyshkevich and others. As applications, we characterize the degree sequences whose realization graphs are triangle-free graphs or hypercubes.

Signal Enhanced Holographic Fluorescence Microscopy With Guide-Star Reconstruction, Changwon Jang, David C. Clark, Jonghyun Kim, Byoungho Lee, Myung K. Kim

Physics Faculty Publications

We propose a signal enhanced guide-star reconstruction method for holographic fluorescence microscopy. In the late 00’s, incoherent digital holography started to be vigorously studied by several groups to overcome the limitations of conventional digital holography. The basic concept of incoherent digital holography is to acquire the complex hologram from incoherent light by utilizing temporal coherency of a spatially incoherent light source. The advent of incoherent digital holography opened new possibility of holographic fluorescence microscopy (HFM), which was difficult to achieve with conventional digital holography. However there has been an important issue of low and noisy signal in HFM which slows …

Anions Govern Cell Volume: A Case Study Of Relative Astrocytic And Neuronal Swelling In Spreading Depolarization, Niklas Hübel, Ghanim Ullah Mar 2016

Anions Govern Cell Volume: A Case Study Of Relative Astrocytic And Neuronal Swelling In Spreading Depolarization, Niklas Hübel, Ghanim Ullah

Physics Faculty Publications

Cell volume changes are ubiquitous in normal and pathological activity of the brain. Nevertheless, we know little about the dynamics of cell and tissue swelling, and the differential changes in the volumes of neurons and glia during pathological states such as spreading depolarizations (SD) under ischemic and non–ischemic conditions, and epileptic seizures. By combining the Hodgkin–Huxley type spiking dynamics, dynamic ion concentrations, and simultaneous neuronal and astroglial volume changes into a comprehensive model, we elucidate why glial cells swell more than neurons in SD and the special case of anoxic depolarization (AD), and explore the relative contributions of the two …

Exploring The Implementation Of Project-Based Learning At An Alternative High School, Mairead Kathleen Beane

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations

The research questions addressed in this project were: What are teachers’ and administrators’ experiences with implementing a project-based learning curriculum in their high school? And, what are students’ experiences of participating in a project-based learning curriculum in their high school? The author documents the necessity and rational of using a project-based learning approach in secondary schools. She documents one specific school’s early implementation of project-based learning pedagogy: its perceived successes and failures from teachers and students. In a time of high stakes testing and school accountability, the author concludes that project-based learning is a viable and valuable option for secondary …

Variability In Terrigenous Sediment Supply Offshore Of The Río De La Plata (Uruguay) Recording The Continental Climatic History Over The Past 1200 Years, Laura Perez, Felipe García-Rodríguez, Till J.J. Hanebuth Mar 2016

Variability In Terrigenous Sediment Supply Offshore Of The Río De La Plata (Uruguay) Recording The Continental Climatic History Over The Past 1200 Years, Laura Perez, Felipe García-Rodríguez, Till J.J. Hanebuth

Marine Science

The continental shelf adjacent to the Río de la Plata (RdlP) exhibits extremely complex hydrographic and ecological characteristics which are of great socioeconomic importance. Since the long-term environmental variations related to the atmospheric (wind fields), hydrologic (freshwater plume), and oceanographic (currents and fronts) regimes are little known, the aim of this study is to reconstruct the changes in the terrigenous input into the inner continental shelf during the late Holocene period (associated with the RdlP sediment discharge) and to unravel the climatic forcing mechanisms behind them. To achieve this, we retrieved a 10 m long sediment core from the RdlP …

Ultrasonic Data Steganography, Alexander Orosz Edwards Mar 2016

Ultrasonic Data Steganography, Alexander Orosz Edwards

KSU Journey Honors College Capstones and Theses

What started off as a question on the possibly of data transmission via sound above the level of human hearing evolved into a project exploring the possibility of ultrasonic data infiltration and exfiltration in an information security context. It is well known that sound can be used to transmit data as this can be seen in many old technologies, most notably and simply DTMF tones for phone networks. But what if the sound used to transmit signals was in in the ultrasonic range? It would go generally unnoticed to anyone not looking for it with tools such as a spectrum …

The purpose of this paper is to determine the relationship between the number of waves a surfer will catch, the surfer’s characteristics, and the surf conditions; and utilize this relationship to explain wave allocation strategies chosen by surfers. Design/methodology/approach – The study employed a discrete event simulation to model surfers at a well-known surf break in Southern California. Several experimental designs were implemented in the simulation to measure the effect of a surfer’s characteristics and surf conditions on waves caught; and compare different wave allocation strategies. Findings – The number of waves that a surfer will catch is largely dependent …

The fitness costs of reproduction by clonal growth can include a limited ability to adapt to environmental and temporal heterogeneity. Paradoxically, some facultatively clonal species are not only able to survive, but colonize, thrive, and expand in heterogeneous environments. This is likely due to the capacity for acclimation (sensu stricto) which compensates for the fitness costs and complements the ecological advantages of clonality. Introduced P. australis demonstrates great phenotypic plasticity in response to temperature, nutrient availability, geographic gradient, water depths, habitat fertility, atmospheric CO2, interspecific competition, and intraspecific competition for light. However, no in situ …

Controlled Microfluidics To Examine Growth-Factor Induced Migration Of Neural Progenitors In The Drosophila Visual System, Cade Beck, Tanya Singh, Angela Farooqi, Tadmiri Venkatesh, Maribel Vazquez

Publications and Research

BACKGROUND:

The developing visual system in Drosophila melanogaster provides an excellent model with which to examine the effects of changing microenvironments on neural cell migration via microfluidics, because the combined experimental system enables direct genetic manipulation, in vivo observation, and in vitro imaging of cells, post-embryo. Exogenous signaling from ligands such as fibroblast growth factor (FGF) is well-known to control glia differentiation, cell migration, and axonal wrapping central to vision.

NEW METHOD:

The current study employs a microfluidic device to examine how controlled concentration gradient fields of FGF are able to regulate the migration of vision-critical glia cells with and …

Simulating Longer Vectors Of Correlated Binary Random Variables Via Multinomial Sampling, Justine Shults Mar 2016

Simulating Longer Vectors Of Correlated Binary Random Variables Via Multinomial Sampling, Justine Shults

UPenn Biostatistics Working Papers

The ability to simulate correlated binary data is important for sample size calculation and comparison of methods for analysis of clustered and longitudinal data with dichotomous outcomes. One available approach for simulating length n vectors of dichotomous random variables is to sample from the multinomial distribution of all possible length n permutations of zeros and ones. However, the multinomial sampling method has only been implemented in general form (without first making restrictive assumptions) for vectors of length 2 and 3, because specifying the multinomial distribution is very challenging for longer vectors. I overcome this difficulty by presenting an algorithm for …

Temperature Sensitivity Of Mineral Soil Carbon Decomposition In Shrub And Graminoid Tundra, West Greenland, Julia I. Bradley-Cook, Chelsea L. Petrenko, Andrew J. Friedland, Ross A. Virginia

Dartmouth Scholarship

Background:

Shrub expansion is transforming Arctic tundra landscapes, but the impact on the large pool of carbon stored in high-latitude soils is poorly understood. Soil carbon decomposition is a potentially important source of greenhouse gases, which could create a positive feedback to atmospheric temperature. Decomposition is temperature sensitive, but the response to temperature can be altered by environmental variables. We focus on mineral soils, which can comprise a substantial part of the near-surface carbon stock at the landscape scale and have physiochemical characteristics that influence temperature sensitivity. We conducted a soil incubation experiment to measure carbon dioxide (CO2) …

Modelling And Fem Simulation Of Electric Field Assisted Sintering Of Tungsten Carbide (Wc), Sree Koundinya Mar 2016

Modelling And Fem Simulation Of Electric Field Assisted Sintering Of Tungsten Carbide (Wc), Sree Koundinya

Electric Field Assisted Sintering and Related Phenomena Far From Equilibrium

Numerical modeling of sintering and its process variants (such as Hot Pressing, Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIP), Field Assisted Sintering Technique (FAST) or Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS), etc.) has been a field of interest among researchers and industrialists due to its efficiency in predicting various sintering characteristics such as densification, volumetric and shape changes. Thus, various mathematical models have been developed over the years, where, earlier models for sintering included rheological investigations which were able to capture the macroscopic shape and volume changes of a porous body over the process of sintering and were known as phenomenological models [1]. Due to …
