Sticky Seeding In Discrete-Time Reversible-Threshold Networks, Gwen Spencer Mar 2016

Sticky Seeding In Discrete-Time Reversible-Threshold Networks, Gwen Spencer

Mathematics Sciences: Faculty Publications

When nodes can repeatedly update their behavior (as in agent-based models from computational social science or repeated-game play settings) the problem of optimal network seeding becomes very complex. For a popular spreading-phenomena model of binary-behavior updating based on thresholds of adoption among neighbors, we consider several planning problems in the design of Sticky Interventions: when adoption decisions are reversible, the planner aims to find a Seed Set where temporary intervention leads to long-term behavior change. We prove that completely converting a network at minimum cost is Ω(ln(OP T ))-hard to approximate and that maximizing conversion subject to a budget is …

Exciton Dynamics And Many Body Interactions In Layered Semiconducting Materials Revealed With Non-Linear Coherent Spectroscopy, Prasenjit Dey Mar 2016

Exciton Dynamics And Many Body Interactions In Layered Semiconducting Materials Revealed With Non-Linear Coherent Spectroscopy, Prasenjit Dey

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Atomically thin, semiconducting transition metal dichalogenides (TMDs), a special class of layered semiconductors, that can be shaped as a perfect two dimensional material, have garnered a lot of attention owing to their fascinating electronic properties which are achievable at the extreme nanoscale. In contrast to graphene, the most celebrated two-dimensional (2D) material thus far; TMDs exhibit a direct band gap in the monolayer regime. The presence of a non-zero bandgap along with the broken inversion symmetry in the monolayer limit brands semiconducting TMDs as the perfect candidate for future optoelectronic and valleytronics-based device application. These remarkable discoveries demand exploration of …

Associated Production Of A Top Pair And A Higgs Boson Beyond Nlo, Alessandro Broggio, Andrea Ferroglia, Ben D. Pecjak, Adrian Signer, Li Lin Yang Mar 2016

Associated Production Of A Top Pair And A Higgs Boson Beyond Nlo, Alessandro Broggio, Andrea Ferroglia, Ben D. Pecjak, Adrian Signer, Li Lin Yang

Publications and Research

We consider soft gluon emission corrections to the production of a top-antitop pair in association with a Higgs boson at hadron colliders. In particular, we present a softgluon resummation formula for this production process and gather all elements needed to evaluate it at next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic order. We employ these results to obtain approximate next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) formulas, and implement them in a bespoke parton-level Monte Carlo program which can be used to calculate the total cross section along with arbitrary differential distributions. We use this tool to study the phenomenological impact of the approximate NNLO corrections, finding that they increase …

Educators' Perceptions Of The Importance And Intensity Of Supports In The General Education Classroom For Students With Individualized Education Plans, Stephanie N. Despain Mar 2016

Educators' Perceptions Of The Importance And Intensity Of Supports In The General Education Classroom For Students With Individualized Education Plans, Stephanie N. Despain

Theses and Dissertations

Federal law provides that all students are entitled to a free and appropriate education in the least restrictive environment (LRE). In order to educate students with disabilities in the LRE, educators need to provide supports to enhance meaningful engagement and success in the general education curriculum. Utilizing supports to increase engagement and human functioning is not a new concept, but it is one that has received increased attention due to scholarly efforts by the World Health Organization (WHO, 2001) and the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (AAIDD; Luckasson et al., 1992; Schalock et al., 2002; 2010). A major …

Powering The Planet: The Role Chemistry Plays In Solar Energy Technology, Amy M. Scott Mar 2016

Powering The Planet: The Role Chemistry Plays In Solar Energy Technology, Amy M. Scott

Climate Sustainability Lecture Series

Global energy demands are projected to double by 2050, according to the U.S. Department of Energy, and solar energy has the greatest potential as the most benign, universal resource for generating electricity. However, harnessing the solar energy efficiently and converting it towards useful forms of power that are compatible with our current infrastructure remains an elusive goal. Today’s solar energy utilization relies on silicon-based photovoltaic (PV) technology, which converts photon energy to electrical energy. The efficiency of these devices remains low (< 30%) and the cost of processing silicon and installing solar panels in homes makes PV uneconomical compared to the current price of electricity. Research efforts towards developing new inorganic and organic materials for thin film PV to replace silicon are currently underway. Organic materials are particularly interesting from the standpoint of developing simple, cheap materials that can be easily tailored for future PV devices. The future of solar energy utilization relies on developing solar paints for vehicles, solar shingles for rooftops, and spray-on solar ink for small device applications, but continued fundamental research is needed for decreasing cost and improving efficiency for next generation devices.

Searching For Evidence-Based Practice: A Survey Of Empirical Studies On Curricular Interventions Measuring And Reporting Fidelity Of Implementation Published During 2004-2013, Lisa Foster, Tracy C. Missett

Faculty Publications and Presentations

In an environment of accountability, the development of evidence-based practices is expected. To demonstrate that a practice is evidence based, quality indicators of rigorous methodology should be present including indications that teachers implementing an intervention have done so with fidelity to its design. Because evidence-based practices assume fidelity of implementation (FOI), failure to establish FOI limits the conclusions that can be drawn from any outcome evaluation. This study surveys the gifted education literature to ascertain the degree to which FOI has been assessed, reported, and tied to measured outcomes in curriculum intervention efficacy studies and outcome evaluations. Of the 11 …

Endogenous Competence And A Limit To The Condorcet Jury Theorem, Bryan C. Mccannon, Paul Walker Mar 2016

Endogenous Competence And A Limit To The Condorcet Jury Theorem, Bryan C. Mccannon, Paul Walker

Economics Faculty Working Papers Series

The seminal contribution, known as the Condorcet Jury Theorem, observes that under a specific set of conditions an increase in the size of a group tasked with making a decision leads to an improvement in the group's ability to make a good decision. An assumption under-appreciated is that the competency of the members of the group is assumed to be exogenous. In numerous applications, members of the group make investments to improve the accuracy of their decision making (e.g. pre-meeting efforts). We consider the collective action problem that arises. We show that if competence is endogenous, then increases in the …

Probate-Error Costs, Mark Glover Mar 2016

Probate-Error Costs, Mark Glover

Faculty Articles

Because a will's authenticity is never certain probate courts sometimes make incorrect determinations regarding whether a purported will is a genuine expression of the decedent's intent When the court incorrectly admits an inauthentic will to probate a falsepositive outcome occurs Conversely when the court incorrectly denies probate of an authentic will a falsenegative outcome occurs Because falsepositive outcomes grant probate of inauthentic wills and falsenegative outcomes deny probate of authentic wills both can be characterized as ÔÇ£probate errorsÔÇØProbate errors are inevitable and consequently policymakers must decide how to balance the risk of falsepositive outcomes and falsenegative outcomes The conventional method …

Analysis And Processing Of Human Electroretinogram, Abdulrahman Mohammad Alaql Mar 2016

Analysis And Processing Of Human Electroretinogram, Abdulrahman Mohammad Alaql

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Electroretinagram (ERG) is the recording of electrical activity of retinal cells elicited by light stimulation, which has been widely used to help diagnose different types of retinal dysfunctions. The ERG response signal is a short non-stationary signal that contains overlapping components. Different Digital Signal Processing (DSP) techniques are investigated using MATLAB to study the time-frequency responses of the ERG signal such as Short Time Fourier Transform (STFT), Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT) and Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT). The Photopic ERG signal was processed and analyzed in this thesis and the results of each technique have been investigated in detail. The Photopic …

Rate Equations For Nitrogen Molecules In Ultrashort And Intense X-Ray Pulses, Ji Cai Liu, Nora Berrah, Lorenz S. Cederbaum, James P. Cryan, James M. Glownia, Kenneth J. Schafer, Christian Buth Mar 2016

Rate Equations For Nitrogen Molecules In Ultrashort And Intense X-Ray Pulses, Ji Cai Liu, Nora Berrah, Lorenz S. Cederbaum, James P. Cryan, James M. Glownia, Kenneth J. Schafer, Christian Buth

Faculty Publications

We study theoretically the quantum dynamics of nitrogen molecules (N2) exposed to intense and ultrafast x-rays at a wavelength of 1.1 nm (1100eV photon energy) from the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) free electron laser. Molecular rate equations are derived to describe the intertwined photoionization, decay, and dissociation processes occurring for N2. This model complements our earlier phenomenological approaches, the single-atom, symmetric-sharing, and fragmentation-matrix models of 2012 (J. Chem. Phys. 136 214310). Our rate-equations are used to obtain the effective pulse energy at the sample and the time scale for the dissociation of the metastable dication . This leads to …

Plant and Soil Sciences Faculty Publications

Manufactured nanoparticles (NPs) are increasingly being used for commercial purposes and certain NP types have been shown to have broad spectrum antibacterial activity. In contrast, their activities against fungi and fungi-like oomycetes are less studied. Here, we examined the potential of two types of commercially available Zn NPs (Zn NPs and ZnO NPs) to inhibit spore germination and infectivity on tobacco leaves resulting from exposure to the fungi-like oomycete pathogen Peronospora tabacina (P. tabacina). Both types of NPs, as well as ZnCl2 and bulk ZnO control treatments, inhibited spore germination compared to a blank control. ZnO ENMs …

A Six-Stage Framework For Evolutionary Is Research Using Path Models: Conceptual Development And A Social Networking Illustration, Ned Kock, Murad Moqbel

Information Systems Faculty Publications

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to fill a gap in evolutionary theorizing in the field of information systems. Evolutionary theorizing has recently been added as a useful tool to the research repertoire of information systems investigators. However, the literature on evolutionary theorizing and related empirical research lacks a clear framework that explicitly shows how information systems researchers can go, step-by-step, from a generic model of the evolution of traits in our ancestral past to a more specific model depicting the effects of technology facilitation of those traits among modern humans. The purpose of this study is to fill …

Nonlinear Time Series And Neural-Network Models Of Exchange Rates Between The Us Dollar And Major Currencies, David E. Allen, Michael Mcaleer, Shelton Peiris, Abhay Kumar Singh

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

This paper features an analysis of major currency exchange rate movements in relation to the US dollar, as constituted in US dollar terms. Euro, British pound, Chinese yuan, and Japanese yen are modelled using a variety of non-linear models, including smooth transition regression models, logistic smooth transition regressions models, threshold autoregressive models, nonlinear autoregressive models, and additive nonlinear autoregressive models, plus Neural Network models. The models are evaluated on the basis of error metrics for twenty day out-of-sample forecasts using the mean average percentage errors (MAPE). The results suggest that there is no dominating class of time series models, and …

Applying Linear Controls To Chaotic Continuous Dynamical Systems, James P. Braselton, Yan Wu Mar 2016

Applying Linear Controls To Chaotic Continuous Dynamical Systems, James P. Braselton, Yan Wu

Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications

In this case-study, we examine the effects of linear control on continuous dynamical systems that exhibit chaotic behavior using the symbolic computer algebra system Mathematica. Stabilizing (or controlling) higher-dimensional chaotic dynamical systems is generally a difficult problem, Musielak and Musielak, [1]. We numerically illustrate that sometimes elementary approaches can yield the desired numerical results with two different continuous higher order dynamical systems that exhibit chaotic behavior, the Lorenz equations and the Rössler attractor.

Periodicity In Quantum Calculus, Jeffrey T. Neugebauer Mar 2016

Periodicity In Quantum Calculus, Jeffrey T. Neugebauer

Mathematics Colloquium Series

After a brief introduction to time scales, we will explore periodic functions on time scales. We will discuss how periodicity is defined on time scales that are not periodic. In particular, we will look at periodicity in the quantum case. Two definitions of periodicity have recently been introduced. One definition is based on the equality of areas lying below the graph of the function at each period; the other regards a periodic function to be one that repeats its values after a certain number of steps. We will show a relation between these two definitions and then use this relation …

Lasers are commonly used in high-precision measurement and profiling systems. Some laser measurement systems are based on interferometry principles, and others are based on active triangulation, depending on requirements of the application. This paper describes an active triangulation laser measurement system for a specific application wherein the relative position of two fixed, rigid mechanical components is to be measured dynamically with high precision in six degrees of freedom (DOF). Potential applications include optical systems with feedback to control for mechanical vibration, such as target acquisition devices with multiple focal planes. The method uses an array of several laser emitters mounted …

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

Aims. We study a sample of 21 young and active solar-type stars with spectral types ranging from late F to mid K and characterize the behaviour of their activity.

Methods. We apply the continuous period search (CPS) time series analysis method on Johnson B- and V-band photometry of the sample stars, collected over a period of 16 to 27 years. Using the CPS method, we estimate the surface differential rotation and determine the existence and behaviour of active longitudes and activity cycles on the stars. We supplement the time series results by calculating new log R'HK = …
