Analysis Of Pre-Service Teachers’ Perceptions Of The Importance Of The Arts As A Means Of Instruction In The Classroom, Chudney Shanta Mcclurkin Patrick Apr 2016

Analysis Of Pre-Service Teachers’ Perceptions Of The Importance Of The Arts As A Means Of Instruction In The Classroom, Chudney Shanta Mcclurkin Patrick

Theses and Dissertations

In recent years, the arts have been utilized and recognized as a vital part of instruction. There has been little research, however about the perceptions and attitudes that pre-service teachers have about the use of arts integration as a means of instruction in the general education classroom. In this study, data collected from 71 pre-service teachers revealed that pre-service teachers perceive that arts integration is an important part of the educational process for students. While they perceive that the arts are important, they hold some apprehension for their ability to effectively provide instruction in particular art forms. Over half (59.2%) …

A Comparative Analysis Of Read 180 And Cultural Literacy On The Reading Achievement And Motivation Of African American Males In An Alternative High School, Clifton F. Nicholson Apr 2016

A Comparative Analysis Of Read 180 And Cultural Literacy On The Reading Achievement And Motivation Of African American Males In An Alternative High School, Clifton F. Nicholson

Theses and Dissertations

Nationwide, increased accountability measures require educational leaders to develop and implement instructional practices that expedite the narrowing of the achievement gap. Legislation in several states allows states to annex low-performing schools. With such pressure, school districts are looking to educational consultants to facilitate the transformation of reading instruction, thereby raising levels of academic achievement. A thorough vetting of these interventions, however, is necessary to determine if the potential benefits can be generalized to other populations.

The purpose of this quantitative, causal-comparative study was to compare the reading achievement and reading motivation of two groups of African American males in an …

Separation Of Parallel Encoded Complex-Valued Slices (Specs) From A Single Complex-Valued Aliased Coil Image, Daniel B. Rowe, Iain P. Bruce, Andrew S. Nencka, James S. Hyde, Mary C. Kociuba Apr 2016

Separation Of Parallel Encoded Complex-Valued Slices (Specs) From A Single Complex-Valued Aliased Coil Image, Daniel B. Rowe, Iain P. Bruce, Andrew S. Nencka, James S. Hyde, Mary C. Kociuba

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

Purpose

Achieving a reduction in scan time with minimal inter-slice signal leakage is one of the significant obstacles in parallel MR imaging. In fMRI, multiband-imaging techniques accelerate data acquisition by simultaneously magnetizing the spatial frequency spectrum of multiple slices. The SPECS model eliminates the consequential inter-slice signal leakage from the slice unaliasing, while maintaining an optimal reduction in scan time and activation statistics in fMRI studies.

Materials and Methods

When the combined k-space array is inverse Fourier reconstructed, the resulting aliased image is separated into the un-aliased slices through a least squares estimator. Without the additional spatial information from …

Roles Of A Teacher And Researcher During In Situ Professional Development Around The Implementation Of Mathematical Modeling Tasks, Hyunyi Jung, Corey Brady Apr 2016

Roles Of A Teacher And Researcher During In Situ Professional Development Around The Implementation Of Mathematical Modeling Tasks, Hyunyi Jung, Corey Brady

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

Partnership with teachers for professional development has been considered beneficial because of the potential of collaborative work in the teacher’s own classroom to be relevant to practice. From this perspective, both teachers and researchers can draw on their own expertise and work as authentic partners. In this study, we address the need for such collaboration and focus on how a teacher and a researcher performed their roles when collaboratively implementing mathematical modeling tasks within a context of in situ professional development. Using multi-tier design-based research, as a framework, a researcher worked in a teacher’s classroom to implement a series of …

Minimizing The Cost Of Guessing Games, Lindsay Czap Apr 2016

Minimizing The Cost Of Guessing Games, Lindsay Czap

Honors Projects

Then, the second participant, the “Questioner,” asks only yes-or-no questions in order to guess the number. In this paper, we study guessing games with lies and costs. In particular, the Responder is allowed to lie in one answer, and the Questioner is charged a cost based on the content of each question. Guessing games with lies are closely linked to error correcting codes, which are mathematical objects that allow us to detect an error in received information and correct these errors. We will give basic definitions in coding theory and show how error correcting codes allow us to still guess …

Identity, A Transformational Game: Student Understanding Of Transformation Geometry And The Application Of Classroom Games, Brittany Bordewyk

Honors Projects

In middle school and high school, students become acquainted with transformational geometry, and geometry in the co-ordinate plane. This paper addresses some of the reasons students encounter difficulty involving transformational geometry and ways to help students better understand transformational geometry. The discussion moves into the benefits of implementing games into the math classroom and some essential features of quality math games. This paper culminates with a discussion on the creation and design of my transformational game Identity, how Identity can help with students’ understanding and facility with transformational geometry, and a reflection on the game-creating process.

Assembly Of A 3d Cellular Computer Using Folded E-Blocks, Shivendra Pandey, Nicholas J. Macias, Carmen Ciobanu, Changkyu Yoon, Christof Teuscher, David H. Gracias

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

The assembly of integrated circuits in three dimensions (3D) provides a possible solution to address the ever-increasing demands of modern day electronic devices. It has been suggested that by using the third dimension, devices with high density, defect tolerance, short interconnects and small overall form factors could be created. However, apart from pseudo 3D architecture, such as monolithic integration, die, or wafer stacking, the creation of paradigms to integrate electronic low-complexity cellular building blocks in architecture that has tile space in all three dimensions has remained elusive. Here, we present software and hardware foundations for a truly 3D cellular computational …

Extent Of Capillary Rise In Sands And Silts, Rachel Lynn Salim Apr 2016

Extent Of Capillary Rise In Sands And Silts, Rachel Lynn Salim

Masters Theses

The values reported in literature for the height of capillary rise in fine sands, silts, and clays are contradictory. Most of the values were based on mathematical models, which used estimated rather than measured input data. This work measured capillary rise values in laboratory experiments in fine-grained sands and silts.

Two uniform sands with grains 0.35--0.7 mm in diameter and 0.3-0.6 mm in diameter, silt with an average grain size below 40 microns, and 0.35--0.7 mm sand coated with a water-repellant spray were carefully packed into two-inch diameter glass columns. These columns were placed into clear plastic tanks with water …

Challenges And Opportunities In Dfo-At: A Study Of E-Nable, Jeremiah L. Parry-Hill, Daniel L. Ashbrook

Articles

In this paper, we present the results of a study of the e‑NABLE community–a distributed, collaborative volunteer effort to design and fabricate upper-limb assistive technology devices for distant strangers. We position e‑NABLE as the prototypical example of “Do-it-yourself For Others Assistive Technology” (DFO‑AT) and describe three key findings: how the project does and does not meet the recipient's nuanced needs for functional and social support; how e‑NABLE volunteers' motivations compare to those of volunteers for other efforts, including open source software projects; and we explore the challenges inherent in the distance between volunteers and recipients. We also describe opportunities for …

The Evolution Of Strategic Sophistication, Nikolaus Robalino, Arthur Robson Apr 2016

The Evolution Of Strategic Sophistication, Nikolaus Robalino, Arthur Robson

Articles

This paper investigates the evolutionary foundation for our ability to attribute preferences to others, an ability that is central to conventional game theory. We argue here that learning others’ preferences allows individuals to efficiently modify their behavior in strategic environments with a persistent element of novelty. Agents with the ability to learn have a sharp, unambiguous advantage over those who are less sophisticated because the former agents extrapolate to novel circumstances information about opponents’ preferences that was learned previously. This advantage holds even with a suitably small cost to reflect the additional cognitive complexity involved.

First Model-Independent Dalitz Analysis Of B0→Dk∗0, D→K0sπ+Π− Decay, K. Negishi Et Al., D. Joffe

Faculty Articles

We report a measurement of the amplitude ratio rS of B0 → D0K∗0 and B0 → D¯0K∗0 decays with a Dalitz analysis of D → K0 Sπ+π− decays, for the first time using a model-independent method. We set an upper limit rS < 0.87 at the 68% confidence level, using the full data sample of 711 fb−1 corresponding to 772 × 106 BB¯ pairs collected at the ϒ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB e+e− collider. This result is obtained from observables x− = +0.4+1.0+0.0 −0.6−0.1 ± 0.0, y− = −0.6+0.8+0.1 −1.0−0.0 ± 0.1, x+ = +0.1+0.7+0.0 −0.4−0.1 ± 0.1, and y+ = +0.3+0.5+0.0 −0.8−0.1 ± 0.1, where x± = rS cos(δS ± φ3), y± = rS sin(δS ± φ3), and φ3 (δS) is the weak (strong) phase difference between B0 → D0K∗0 and B0 → D¯0K∗0.

Estimating River Discharge Using Multiple-Tide Gauges Distributed Along A Channel, Hamed R. Moftakhari, David A. Jay, Stefan Talke Apr 2016

Estimating River Discharge Using Multiple-Tide Gauges Distributed Along A Channel, Hamed R. Moftakhari, David A. Jay, Stefan Talke

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Reliable estimation of freshwater inflow to the ocean from large tidal rivers is vital for water resources management and climate analyses. Discharge gauging stations are typically located beyond the tidal intrusion reach, such that inputs and losses occurring closer to the ocean are not included. Here, we develop a method of estimating river discharge using multiple gauges and time-dependent tidal statistics determined via wavelet analysis. The Multiple-gauge Tidal Discharge Estimate (MTDE) method is developed using data from the Columbia River and Fraser River estuaries and calibrated against river discharge. Next, we evaluate the general applicability of MTDE by testing an …

Subsidence Along The Atlantic Coast Of North America: Insights From Gps And Late Holocene Relative Sea Level Data, Makan A. Karegar, Timothy H. Dixon, Simon E. Engelhart

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications

The Atlantic Coast of North America is increasingly affected by flooding associated with tropical and extratropical storms, exacerbated by the combined effects of accelerated sea‐level rise and land subsidence. The region includes the collapsing forebulge of the Laurentide Ice Sheet. High‐quality records of late Holocene relative sea‐level (RSL) rise are now available, allowing separation of long‐term glacial isostatic adjustment‐induced displacement from modern vertical displacement measured by GPS. We compare geological records of late Holocene RSL to present‐day vertical rates from GPS. For many coastal areas there is no significant difference between these independent data. Exceptions occur in areas of recent …

Hercules And Diana Hypogene Caves (Herculane Spa, Romania): Dissimilar Chemical Evolutions Documented By Their Present-Day Thermal Water Discharges, Horia Mitrofan, Constantin Marin, Ioan Povară, Bogdan P. Onac Apr 2016

Hercules And Diana Hypogene Caves (Herculane Spa, Romania): Dissimilar Chemical Evolutions Documented By Their Present-Day Thermal Water Discharges, Horia Mitrofan, Constantin Marin, Ioan Povară, Bogdan P. Onac

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Hercules Cave and Diana Cave are two small caves situated some 600 m apart, for which a hypogene origin has been previously suggested. Thermal water discharges (up to about 54°C) are hosted by each cave, and were recently made the object of an eight-month chemical monitoring operation. By plotting the concentrations of several chemical species (Na, K, Ca, Sr, Mg, SiO2, Br) against the concentration of the conservative anion Cl, it was found that both caves discharged a binary water mixture, which was derived from the same saline (and hot) parent-fluid and the same fresh (and cold) parent-fluid. This fact …

Conducting Laalo3/Srtio3 Heterointerfaces On Atomically-Flat Substrates Prepared By Deionized-Water, John G. Connell, J. Nichols, John H. Gruenewald, D. -W. Kim, Sung S. Ambrose Seo Apr 2016

Conducting Laalo3/Srtio3 Heterointerfaces On Atomically-Flat Substrates Prepared By Deionized-Water, John G. Connell, J. Nichols, John H. Gruenewald, D. -W. Kim, Sung S. Ambrose Seo

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We have investigated how the recently-developed water-leaching method for atomically-flat SrTiO3 (STO) substrates affects the transport properties of LaAlO3 (LAO) and STO heterointerfaces. Using pulsed laser deposition at identical growth conditions, we have synthesized epitaxial LAO thin-films on two different STO substrates, which are prepared by water-leaching and buffered hydrofluoric acid (BHF) etching methods. The structural, transport, and optical properties of LAO/STO heterostructures grown on water-leached substrates show the same high-quality as the samples grown on BHF-etched substrates. These results indicate that the water-leaching method can be used to grow complex oxide heterostructures with atomically well-defined heterointerfaces without …

Targeting Creativity Skills For High School Students With Special Needs, Chris Thompson Apr 2016

Targeting Creativity Skills For High School Students With Special Needs, Chris Thompson

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Helping students organize their thoughts is an important component of teaching. Including thinking maps in instruction is beneficial and can be used to measure multiple aspects of student learning, such as understanding creativity. Creativity is a unique construct and often not evaluated in schools. This qualitative study examined creativity, which is the collection of the person, the field, and the domain (Ford, 1996), through a rubric, interviews, a sorting task, and teacher logs. A convenience sample including three high school students were selected to participate. The triangulation of the data sources revealed four themes: collaboration with peers and adults, brainstorming …

State Estimation – New Models On Power Distribution Networks Based On Weighted Least Squares Method In Line Current Measurements, Hugo Vicente Barrera Apr 2016

State Estimation – New Models On Power Distribution Networks Based On Weighted Least Squares Method In Line Current Measurements, Hugo Vicente Barrera

Masters Theses

Calculation of Load Flow distribution is an important tool in Electrical Engineering that involves numerical analysis applied to Power Systems. State Estimation techniques have been developed and applied thoroughly mainly in the levels of generation and transmission. Research in the distribution level remains a challenge due to the intrinsic characteristics of the network. Introducing line current measurements in the state estimation process constitutes an additional issue due to distribution networks characteristics. In order to overcome these difficulties, it is necessary to develop mathematical models that simulate the behavior of those networks. The solution of the problem of state estimation by …

Learning Robust And Discriminative Manifold Representations For Pattern Recognition, Sriram Kumar Apr 2016

Learning Robust And Discriminative Manifold Representations For Pattern Recognition, Sriram Kumar

Theses

Face and object recognition find applications in domains such as biometrics, surveillance and human computer interaction. An important component in any recognition pipeline is to learn pertinent image representations that will help the system to discriminate one image class from another. These representations enable the system to learn a discriminative function that can classify a wide range of images. In practical situations, the images acquired are often corrupted with occlusions and noise. Thus, a robust and discriminative learning is necessary for good classification performance.

This thesis explores two scenarios where robust and discriminative manifold representations help recognize face and object …

Development Of An Integrated Reformer And Fuel Cell System For Portable Power Applications, Michael G. Waller Apr 2016

Development Of An Integrated Reformer And Fuel Cell System For Portable Power Applications, Michael G. Waller

Theses

In order for fuel cells to play a large part in a global sustainable energy infrastructure, fuel

cell-based systems need to be built to meet the demands of a wide range of applications in all aspects of society. To date, the majority of fuel cell research has been focused on developing systems to power applications such as passenger vehicles, commercial buildings, and small handheld devices. These applications typically require power outputs that are either greater than 100 kW or less than 20 W, and a gap remains in developing viable fuel cell systems for applications requiring electric power between 100 …

Justice Kennedy And The Fisher Revisit: Will The Irrelevant Prove Decisive?, Richard O. Lempert Apr 2016

Justice Kennedy And The Fisher Revisit: Will The Irrelevant Prove Decisive?, Richard O. Lempert

Articles

Most Court watchers expect Justice Kennedy to cast the deciding vote when the Supreme Court hands down its decision in this term’s installment of Fisher v. University of Texas at Austin or, as it is colloquially titled, Fisher II. What divides observers is not whose vote will be crucial, but the law that vote will make. At one extreme, Justice Kennedy could vote to uphold the Fifth Circuit’s reaffirmation of its earlier decision. When the case was heard, this would almost certainly have meant affirming the circuit court’s decision by an equally divided Court. (Justice Kagan, an almost certain supporter …
