Advancing Multiple Model-Based Control Of Complex Biological Systems: Applications In T Cell Biology, Jeffrey P. Perley Apr 2016

Advancing Multiple Model-Based Control Of Complex Biological Systems: Applications In T Cell Biology, Jeffrey P. Perley

Open Access Dissertations

Activated CD4+ T cells are important regulators of the adaptive immune response against invading pathogens and cancerous host cells. The process of activation is mediated by the T cell receptor and a vast network of intracellular signal transduction pathways, which recognize and interpret antigenic signals to determine the cell's response. The critical role of these early signaling events in normal cell function and the pathogenesis of disease ultimately make them attractive therapeutic targets for numerous autoimmune diseases and cancers.

Scientists increasingly rely on predictive mathematical models and control-theoretic tools to design effective strategies to manipulate cellular processes for the advancement …

Behavioral Responses And Policy Evaluation: Revisiting Water And Fuel Policies, Shanxia Sun Apr 2016

Behavioral Responses And Policy Evaluation: Revisiting Water And Fuel Policies, Shanxia Sun

Open Access Dissertations

In my dissertation, I examine how policies regulating agricultural production and clean technology impact the environment. I focus on policies affecting water depletion, water pollution, and fuel consumption. I assess their cost-effectiveness by modeling and quantifying the behavioral responses of farmers and households.

My first essay focuses on decreasing groundwater depletion through increasing irrigation efficiency in Mexico. I quantify the impacts of different sources of inefficiency on groundwater extraction, and I evaluate the effectiveness of alternative policies that aim to reduce the over-extraction of groundwater. I find that mechanisms of electricity cost-sharing implemented in many wells have a sizable impact …

Why Knowing How To "Engage" Cross-Culturally Matters: Kenyan Principals' Experiences In Cross-Cultural Collaboration, Andrea Nelson Apr 2016

Why Knowing How To "Engage" Cross-Culturally Matters: Kenyan Principals' Experiences In Cross-Cultural Collaboration, Andrea Nelson

Doctor of Education (EdD)

How Kenyan principals engage cross-culturally may provide applicable approaches for others in education. This study sought to examine how Kenyan principals navigate the complexities of working in such a diverse country as Kenya, with over 40 native tribes. Through the interview process the principals shared their many challenges working cross-culturally, but more importantly, what strategies and approaches they use to navigate these complex relationships. This study also examined how these strategies and approaches align with the current cultural frameworks; cultural competence, cultural intelligence and cultural humility. The findings show that Kenyan principals use multiple approaches that align with all three …

Internships: Experiential Learning, Academic Connection And Assessment, Arlene J. Nicholas Apr 2016

Internships: Experiential Learning, Academic Connection And Assessment, Arlene J. Nicholas

Faculty and Staff - Articles & Papers

This paper reviews the current literature on internships and the impact internships have for students. For example, according to Gault, Leach, and Duey (2010) interns who exceeded employers' expectations were offered a 9.2% higher salary than other non-intern alumni counterparts. Employers of students who complete credit internships are required to respond to a questionnaire about the students work. However, like many other universities and colleges, students were not required to complete formal surveys of their internship. Overview of student surveys regarding their experiences and academic associations is discussed. The benefits of electronic documentation for outcomes and assessment is explained.

Nucleon Pdf Separation With The Collider And Fixed-Target Data, Sergey Alekhin, Johannes Blümlein, Kristin Lohwasser, Lea Michaela Caminada, Katerina Lipka, Ringaile Plačakytė, Sven-Olaf Moch, Roberto Petti

Faculty Publications

We consider the impact of the recent data obtained by the LHC, Tevatron, and fixed-target experiments on the nucleon quark distributions with a particular focus on disentangling different quark species. An improved determination of the poorly known strange sea distribution is obtained due to including data from the neutrino-induced deep-inelastic scattering experiments NOMAD and CHORUS. The impact of the associated (W + c) production data by CMS and ATLAS on the strange sea determination is also studied and a comparison with earlier results based on the collider data is discussed. Finally, the recent LHC and Tevatron data on …

Scalable Parallelization Of A Markov Coalescent Genealogy Sampler, Philip E. Davis Apr 2016

Scalable Parallelization Of A Markov Coalescent Genealogy Sampler, Philip E. Davis

Masters Theses

Coalescent genealogy samplers are effective tools for the study of population genetics. They are used to estimate the historical parameters of a population based upon the sampling of present-day genetic information. A popular approach employs Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods. While effective, these methods are very computationally intensive, often taking weeks to run. Although attempts have been made to leverage parallelism in an effort to reduce runtimes, they have not resulted in scalable solutions. Due to the inherently sequential nature of MCMC methods, their performance has suffered diminishing returns when applied to large-scale computing clusters. In the interests of …

Anonymous Proxy Signature With Hierarchical Traceability, Jiannan Wei, Guomin Yang, Yi Mu, Kaitai Liang Apr 2016

Anonymous Proxy Signature With Hierarchical Traceability, Jiannan Wei, Guomin Yang, Yi Mu, Kaitai Liang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Anonymous proxy signatures are very useful in the construction of anonymous credential systems such as anonymous voting and anonymous authentication protocols. As a basic requirement, we should ensure an honest proxy signer is anonymous. However, in order to prevent the proxy signer from abusing the signing right, we should also allow dishonest signers to be traced. In this paper, we present three novel anonymous proxy signature schemes with different levels of (namely, public, internal and original signer) traceability. We define the formal definitions and security models for these three different settings, and prove the security of our proposed schemes under …

Persentiment: A Personalized Sentiment Classification System For Microblog Users, Kaisong Song, Ling Chen, Wei Gao, Shi Feng, Daling Wang, Chengqi Zhang Apr 2016

Persentiment: A Personalized Sentiment Classification System For Microblog Users, Kaisong Song, Ling Chen, Wei Gao, Shi Feng, Daling Wang, Chengqi Zhang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Microblogging services are playing increasingly important roles in our daily life today. It is useful for microblog users to instantly understand the sentiment of a large number of microblogs posted by their friends and make appropriate response. Despite considerable progress on microblog sentiment classification, most of the existing works ignore the influence of personal distinctions of different microblog users on the sentiments they convey, and none of them has provided real-world personalized sentiment classification systems. Considering personal distinctions in sentiment analysis is natural and necessary as different people have different language habits, personal characters, opinion bias and so on. In …

Smokey: Ubiquitous Smoking Detection With Commercial Wifi Infrastructures, Xiaolong Zheng, Jiliang Wang, Longfei Shangguan, Zimu Zhou, Yunhao Liu Apr 2016

Smokey: Ubiquitous Smoking Detection With Commercial Wifi Infrastructures, Xiaolong Zheng, Jiliang Wang, Longfei Shangguan, Zimu Zhou, Yunhao Liu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Even though indoor smoking ban is being put into practice in civilized countries, existing vision or sensor-based smoking detection methods cannot provide ubiquitous smoking detection. In this paper, we take the first attempt to build a ubiquitous passive smoking detection system, which leverages the patterns smoking leaves on WiFi signals to identify the smoking activity even in the non-line-of-sight and through-wall environments. We study the behaviors of smokers and leverage the common features to recognize the series of motions during smoking, avoiding the target-dependent training set to achieve the high accuracy. We design a foreground detection based motion acquisition method …

Tuning By Turning: Enabling Phased Array Signal Processing For Wifi With Inertial Sensors, Kun Qian, Chenshu Wu, Zheng Yang, Zimu Zhou, Xu Wang, Yunhao Liu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Modern mobile devices are equipped with multiple antennas, which brings various wireless sensing applications such as accurate localization, contactless human detection and wireless human-device interaction. A key enabler for these applications is phased array signal processing, especially Angle of Arrival (AoA) estimation. However, accurate AoA estimation on commodity devices is non-trivial due to limited number of antennas and uncertain phase offsets. Previous works either rely on elaborate calibration or involve contrived human interactions. In this paper, we aim to enable practical AoA measurements on commodity off-the-shelf (COTS) mobile devices. The key insight is to involve users’ natural rotation to formulate …

Knowledge Cluster Development Through Connectivity: Examples From Southeast Asia, Hans-Dieter Evers, Thomas Menkhoff Apr 2016

Knowledge Cluster Development Through Connectivity: Examples From Southeast Asia, Hans-Dieter Evers, Thomas Menkhoff

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Whereas since the 1990s national and regional planners saw the creation of knowledge clusters as a panacea for gaining a competitive advantage to propel a region or country into a higher stage of industrial development, recent research suggests that connectivity (e.g. through broadband penetration or joint research connections with collaborators elsewhere) is one of the enablers for socio-economic development. This paper will draw on the results of studies on knowledge clusters in Southeast Asian countries (Malaysia, Brunei, Singapore) as well as the relevant current literature to ask the question, whether knowledge clusters really contribute to regional development and if yes, …

Patrol Scheduling In An Urban Rail Network, Hoong Chuin Lau, Zhi Yuan, Aldy Gunawan Apr 2016

Patrol Scheduling In An Urban Rail Network, Hoong Chuin Lau, Zhi Yuan, Aldy Gunawan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper presents the problem of scheduling security teams to patrol a mass rapid transit rail network of a large urban city. The main objective of patrol scheduling is to deploy security teams to stations of the network at varying time periods subject to rostering as well as security-related constraints. We present several mathematical programming models for different variants of this problem. To generate randomized schedules on a regular basis, we propose injecting randomness by varying the start time and break time for each team as well as varying the visit frequency and visit time for each station according to …

Real-Time Netnography: Rejecting The Passive Shift, Leesa Costello, Marie-Louise Mcdermott Apr 2016

Real-Time Netnography: Rejecting The Passive Shift, Leesa Costello, Marie-Louise Mcdermott

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Although netnography emerged in the 1990s, it is a term unfamiliar to many ethnographers and is still touted as a new methodology. Once explained, ethnographers often understand it in terms of online ethnography. While this is helpful, netnography, however, offers a set of steps and analytic approaches that can be applied across a spectrum of involvement online. Its focus is on gaining entree to an online community, distinguishing between participant observation and nonparticipant observation.

Probing Question Order Effect In Chemistry Concept Inventories, Molly Undersander, Travis J. Lund, Laurie S. Langdon, Marilyne Stains

UCARE: Research Products

The design of assessment tools is critical to evaluate accurately students’ understanding of chemistry. Although extensive research has been conducted on various aspects of assessment tool design, few studies in chemistry have focused on the impact of the order in which questions are presented to students on the measurement of students’ understanding and students’ performance. This potential impact has been labeled the question order effect in other literature. The set of studies described in this article tested whether question order effects were present within a concept inventory on acid-based chemistry. In particular, we tested whether the order of two conceptually …

Alignment For Comprehensive Two-Dimensional Gas Chromatography (Gcxgc) With Global, Low-Order Polynomial Transformations, Davis Rempe, Stephen Reichenbach, Stephen Scott Apr 2016

Alignment For Comprehensive Two-Dimensional Gas Chromatography (Gcxgc) With Global, Low-Order Polynomial Transformations, Davis Rempe, Stephen Reichenbach, Stephen Scott

UCARE: Research Products

As columns age and differ between systems, retention times for GC x GC may vary between runs. In order to properly analyze chromatograms, it is often desirable to align chromatographic features between chromatograms. This alignment can be characterized by a mapping of retention times from one chromatogram to the retention times of another chromatogram. Alignment methods can be classified as global or local, i.e., whether the geometric differences between chromatograms are characterized by a single function for the entire chromatogram or by a combination of many functions for different regions of the chromatogram. Previous work has shown that global, low-degree …

Modeling The Movement Of Solutes Through The Subsurface: Application To Groundwater Remediation With Oxidant Candles, Colin Chatterton Apr 2016

Modeling The Movement Of Solutes Through The Subsurface: Application To Groundwater Remediation With Oxidant Candles, Colin Chatterton

UCARE: Research Products

Groundwater remediation is a process that is heavily dependent upon the properties of the subsurface. Dispersion is a huge factor that controls the spread of a chemical’s mass from its center, which directly controls the volume of subsurface material affected (Pepper, Gerba, & Brusseau, 2006). Quantifying the dispersivity of the medium in the flow tank will help immensely in trying to accurately predict the zone of influence of the slow-release oxidant candles.

Polarimetric Radar Signatures Of Supercell Thunderstorms In Tropical Cyclones, Emily Paltz, Matthew Van Den Broeke Apr 2016

Polarimetric Radar Signatures Of Supercell Thunderstorms In Tropical Cyclones, Emily Paltz, Matthew Van Den Broeke

UCARE: Research Products

Background It is necessary for operational meteorologists to forecast quickly and accurately when storms have the potential of producing severe weather such as tornadoes or hail. Presently, radar represents the most effective way to monitor storms in real time. The National Weather Service recently upgraded the national radar network to polarimetric capability. Much time and resources have been devoted to understanding the development of Great Plains supercells such that polarimetric radar schematics have been developed for them. Little, however, has been done for tropical cyclone supercells. In this study we wish to determine typical polarimetric radar structure for supercells in …

The aim of this project was to assess the development and age of the Kearney Dunefield in central Nebraska through the collection and analysis of sand samples from the inactive dunes. These dunes are not part of the well-known Nebraska Sandhills, and so far have not been thoroughly studied. Similar assessments have been conducted on dune fields throughout the Great Plains, and this study seeks to place the Kearney Dunes into a regional context.

The OSL ages for the Kearney cores fall between approximately 590 and 690 years ago. These dates overlap with a period of activation for the Nebraska …

Iron Concretions In The Cretaceous Dakota Formation, Anthony Kohtz, Richard Kettler, David Loope Apr 2016

Iron Concretions In The Cretaceous Dakota Formation, Anthony Kohtz, Richard Kettler, David Loope

UCARE: Research Products

The Cretaceous Dakota Formation contains abundant iron oxide concretions. The precursors to the iron concretions are siderite (FeCO3) nodules that formed in a reducing floodplain environment. A variety of concretion morphologies formed when the precursor siderite nodules were dissolved by oxidizing groundwater in a paleoaquifer. Iron-oxidizing bacteria are able to oxidize aqueous Fe(II) to Fe(III) oxy-hydroxide at microaerophilic and neutrophilic conditions. This study investigated these concretions to determine if there was a microbial element in their formation and to characterize the concretion morphologies present in the Dakota. This is important for complete paleoenvironment interpretations and astrobiology pursuits.

Iron Mobility In Desert Sandstone Aquifers: The Possible Role Of Siderite, Lubna Al Azri, David Loope Apr 2016

Iron Mobility In Desert Sandstone Aquifers: The Possible Role Of Siderite, Lubna Al Azri, David Loope

UCARE: Research Products

Jordanians and a large number of refugees are drinking radiumcontaminated water from a sandstone aquifer. The problem is that this water passed through sandstone of the Disi Formation only after carbon dioxide and methane had bleached the sandstone, dissolving the Iron-oxide coatings and liberating heavy metals and radionuclides . The Iron that once coated the grains migrated to form Iron bands in the lower Um Ishrin Formation.

The major practical significance of this study involves water quality. The movement of Iron sandstone aquifers can drastically change groundwater chemistry; understanding how and when this movement takes place will help in locating …

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection is a major public health concern. New strategies that target viral entry hold promise for preventing infection or for enhancing the efficacy of existing anti-retroviral therapy. We have targeted the HIV protein gp41, required for initial membrane fusion and viral entry, for computational lead compound development and structural characterization. We have successfully purified an engineered version of this protein (gp41-5) that has an exposed patch that resembles the pre-fusion complex that is presumed to be an important intermediate in fusion. We crystallized this protein and collected a complete data set, however the crystals suffer from …
