Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Landscape ecology is a discipline that explicitly considers the influence of time and space on the environmental patterns we observe and the processes that create them. Although many of the topics studied in landscape ecology have public policy implications, three are of particular concern: climate change; land use–land cover change (LULCC); and a particular type of LULCC, urbanization. These processes are interrelated, because LULCC is driven by both human activities (e.g., agricultural expansion and urban sprawl) and climate change (e.g., desertification). Climate change, in turn, will affect the way humans use landscapes. Interactions among these drivers of ecosystem change can …

Robustness Of Multiple Indicators In Automated Screening Systems For Deception Detection, Nathan Twyman, Jeffrey Gainer Proudfoot, Ryan M. Schuetzler, Aaron Elkins, Douglas C. Derrick Apr 2016

Robustness Of Multiple Indicators In Automated Screening Systems For Deception Detection, Nathan Twyman, Jeffrey Gainer Proudfoot, Ryan M. Schuetzler, Aaron Elkins, Douglas C. Derrick

Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Publications

This study investigates the effectiveness of an automatic system for detection of deception by individuals with the use of multiple indicators of such potential deception. Deception detection research in the information systems discipline has postulated increased accuracy through a new class of screening systems that automatically conduct interviews and track multiple indicators of deception simultaneously. Understanding the robustness of this new class of systems and the limitations of its theoretical improved performance is important for refinement of the conceptual design. The design science proof-of-concept study presented here implemented and evaluated the robustness of these systems for automated screening for deception …

Math Circles: A Tool For Promoting Engagement Among Middle School Minority Males, Eugene Kennedy, Lawrence Smolinsky

Faculty Publications

This article presents results of a case study of a math circle designed for low income, minority students from an inner city middle school. The students were 6th, 7th and 8th grade African American and Hispanic males enrolled in a science, technology, engineering and mathematics focused charter school. The study focused on the impact of participation in the math circle on students and the design features of the experience that were most effective at promoting engagement and positive reactions from students. Participating students reported increases in their interests in mathematics, their confidence in their ability to tackle mathematics problems, and …

High Impact Practices: Student Engagement And Retention, Giselle Bonet, Barbara R. Walters Apr 2016

High Impact Practices: Student Engagement And Retention, Giselle Bonet, Barbara R. Walters

Publications and Research

Community college students face special challenges that can impede their academic progress, resulting in lower grades and persistence than students in selective four-year colleges. Kingsborough Community College in Brooklyn, New York, successfully addresses these challenges with learning communities: small cohorts of students in a blocked program of study, which includes developmental or basic English, a one-credit student skills course, and a social or behavioral science course. This research analyzes the short-term effects of the model by comparing a sample of 267 students enrolled in four learning community and four regular sections of sociology and psychology classes. The results demonstrate a …

Pull-Out Or Push In? Impact On Students With Special Needs Social, Emotional, And Academic Success, Kasey Barton Apr 2016

Pull-Out Or Push In? Impact On Students With Special Needs Social, Emotional, And Academic Success, Kasey Barton

Education Masters

Abstract[SMS1]

Inclusion has become the standard practice in the classroom today but many students continue to be pulled out of the classroom for various services such as counseling, speech therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, and extra support. It is up to the teachers and the parents to decide where the least restrictive environment is for the students in order for them to be the most successful. This study was conducted to determine any effects on students’ social success in the classroom. The study involved five general education teachers, two special education teachers, four parents, and six fourth grade students …

The Impact Of Preparation Programs On Pre-Service Teachers, Kayleigh Caswell Apr 2016

The Impact Of Preparation Programs On Pre-Service Teachers, Kayleigh Caswell

Education Masters

Teacher preparation programs are crucial in readying pre-service teachers for taking over their own classrooms. Each college and university prepares teachers differently, producing variations within teacher knowledge. However, there is potential that an excellent program could produce candidates without gaps. A carefully designed online survey was sent out to teachers who have been teaching for three years or less, inquiring about where teachers felt preparation programs were beneficial, and where the programs were lacking. Teachers surveyed felt that the most beneficial courses were: classroom management, student teaching, and education methodology, while the areas teachers felt they were unprepared for were: …

Coding Strategies, The Choquet Game And Domain Representability, Lynne Yengulalp

Mathematics Faculty Publications

We prove that if the NONEMPTY player has a winning strategy in the strong Choquet game on a regular space X then NONEMPTY has a winning coding strategy in that game (a strategy that only depends on the previous 2 moves). We also prove that any regular domain representable space is generalized subcompact.

Exploring The Relationship Between High School Diploma Requirements In Mathematics And College Remediation Rates, Derek J. Brown Apr 2016

Exploring The Relationship Between High School Diploma Requirements In Mathematics And College Remediation Rates, Derek J. Brown

Doctor of Education (EdD)

This study examined the relationship between the essential skill of math and college remediation rates using a dataset of 1,858 recent high school graduates attending public, 4-year Oregon universities. Using a logistic regression methodology, this study explored (a) the extent to which the essential skill of math improved college remediation rates, (b) the association between allowable essential skill of math sources of evidence and college remediation rates, and (c) the impact of the essential skill of math on students from various demographic backgrounds. Results from this study suggest the essential skill of math graduation requirement significantly predicts the likelihood of …

Natural Acid Rock Drainage And Ferricrete Deposit Chemistry Of The Judith Mountains, Montana, Sara Edinberg Apr 2016

Natural Acid Rock Drainage And Ferricrete Deposit Chemistry Of The Judith Mountains, Montana, Sara Edinberg

Graduate Theses & Non-Theses

The Judith Mountains are a low-elevation “island” mountain range in east-central Montana composed of a series of laccoliths and stocks cut by coarse-grained alkali granite and tinguaite dikes. The geology of the Judith Mountains in the vicinity of Red Mountain and Judith Peak, two of the tallest mountains in the range, is conducive to the creation of headwater streams that are naturally acidic. Extensive limonite staining on Red Mountain attests to the widespread presence of disseminated pyrite in hydrothermally altered porphyry rock. However, no major historical mining operations are known to the area. The acidic streams undergo neutralization in pH …

© 2015 Elsevier Inc. The Deepwater Horizon (DWH) oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico was the largest maritime oil spill in history resulting in the accumulation of genotoxic substances in the air, soil, and water. This has potential far-reaching health impacts on cleanup field workers and on the populations living in the contaminated coastal areas. We have employed portable airborne particulate matter samplers (SKC Biosampler Impinger) and a genetically engineered bacterial reporter system (umu-ChromoTest from EBPI) to determine levels of genotoxicity of air samples collected from highly contaminated areas of coastal Louisiana including Grand Isle, Port Fourchon, and Elmer's …
