Proposed Mechanism Of Alzheimer’S Disease: The Role Of Oxidative Stress A Review Of Scientific Literature, Alicia Monahan Apr 2016

Proposed Mechanism Of Alzheimer’S Disease: The Role Of Oxidative Stress A Review Of Scientific Literature, Alicia Monahan

Senior Honors Projects

Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that has become the sixth leading cause of death in the United States. The most notable neuropathological hallmarks of AD are the accelerated accumulation of β-amyloid deposits around neurons and the accumulation of neurofibrillary tangles (NFT) within neurons. These abnormalities block proteasome function, inhibit mitochondrial function, alter biometal levels, stimulate inflammatory processes, disrupt synaptic communication, and ultimately result in cell death. Mitochondrial dysfunction has been cited as an underlying cause of AD pathologies, specifically by enhancing the production and accumulation of β-amyloid. Once the β-amyloid oligomers form, they disrupt the Ca2+ …

Historically, society has tended to isolate and segregate individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Despite improvements such forms of discrimination continue to be a serious social problem. On October 11, 2011, the Department of Justice began an investigation into several state’s systems of providing vocational services to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This action came about due to several states being out of compliance around Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Title II of the ADA prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability for all services, programs and activities provided to the public by state and …

Grounding Robot Motion In Natural Language And Visual Perception, Scott Alan Bronikowski Apr 2016

Grounding Robot Motion In Natural Language And Visual Perception, Scott Alan Bronikowski

Open Access Dissertations

The current state of the art in military and first responder ground robots involves heavy physical and cognitive burdens on the human operator while taking little to no advantage of the potential autonomy of robotic technology. The robots currently in use are rugged remote-controlled vehicles. Their interaction modalities, usually utilizing a game controller connected to a computer, require a dedicated operator who has limited capacity for other tasks.

I present research which aims to ease these burdens by incorporating multiple modes of robotic sensing into a system which allows humans to interact with robots through a natural-language interface. I conduct …

Development And Evaluation Of A Watershed-Scale Hybrid Hydrologic Model, Younghyun Cho Apr 2016

Development And Evaluation Of A Watershed-Scale Hybrid Hydrologic Model, Younghyun Cho

Open Access Dissertations

A watershed-scale hybrid hydrologic model (Distributed-Clark), which is a lumped conceptual and distributed feature model, was developed to predict spatially distributed short- and long-term rainfall runoff generation and routing using relatively simple methodologies and state-of-the-art spatial data in a GIS environment. In Distributed-Clark, spatially distributed excess rainfall estimated with the SCS curve number method and a GIS-based set of separated unit hydrographs (spatially distributed unit hydrograph) are utilized to calculate a direct runoff flow hydrograph, and time-varied SCS CN values and conditional unit hydrograph approach for different runoff depth-based flow convolution are also used to compute long-term rainfall-runoff flow hydrographs. …

The exceptional sensitivity of the SPME platform, combined with its adaptability to traditional GC-MS systems and its ability to extract samples with minimal work-up, make it appropriate to applications in forensic laboratories.

In a series of research projects, solid phase microextraction was employed for the analysis of explosives, commercial tire treatments, and entomological specimens. In the first project, the volatile organic compounds emanating from two brands of pseudo-explosive training aids for use in detector dog imprinting were determined by SPME-GC-MS, and …

Double Optical Feedback And Pt-Symmetry Breaking Induced Nonlinear Dynamics In Semiconductor Lasers, Joseph S. Suelzer Apr 2016

Double Optical Feedback And Pt-Symmetry Breaking Induced Nonlinear Dynamics In Semiconductor Lasers, Joseph S. Suelzer

Open Access Dissertations

A central aim of this research is to probe the nonlinear dynamics that arise in a semiconductor laser due to optical feedback. We investigate two schemes of optical feedback. The first scheme subjects the laser to optical feedback from two external cavities (or two loops), wherein each cavity contains a spectral filter. Using two filtered optical feedbacks, we experimentally demonstrate the ability to elicit and control unique dynamics in the optical emission frequency (wavelength) of the laser. These results are compared to a deterministic model describing the evolution of the complex electric field and carrier density of the laser. As …

Reducing Csf Partial Volume Effects To Enhance Diffusion Tensor Imaging Metrics Of Brain Microstructure, Robert H. Paul, Lauren E. Salminen, Thomas E. Conturo, Jacob D. Bolzenius

Psychology Faculty Works

Technological advances over recent decades now allow for in vivo observation of human brain tissue through the use of neuroimaging methods. While this field originated with techniques capable of capturing macrostructural details of brain anatomy, modern methods such as diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) that are now regularly implemented in research protocols have the ability to characterize brain microstructure. DTI has been used to reveal subtle micro-anatomical abnormalities in the prodromal phase ofº various diseases and also to delineate “normal” age-related changes in brain tissue across the lifespan. Nevertheless, imaging artifact in DTI remains a significant limitation for identifying true neural …

Fossil fuels dating back to the first coal mine dug from the Earth have been vital to society’s advances, but have come at a significant cost. Rise in pollutants such as CO2 and particulate matter due to combustion byproducts of these fuels (coal, oil, gasoline, diesel) continue to negatively impact the environment, harming various ecosystems by disrupting precarious balances. Attempts have been made to “clean” fossil fuels, but only to temporary degrees of success. Alternative energy sources such as solar, wind, or hydroelectric are increasing in viability, but are often a difficult transition for fossil fuel reliant individuals. Biodiesel (Fatty …

This working paper explores wisdom in organizations. Experiences vital to understanding mediating functions and flows in open systems have seldom been the focus of attention. This paper aims to highlight some challenges inherent in wisdom and applying wisdom, knowing and related research within organizations. It aims to unravel gaps in literature and frame a new research worthy problematique. In doing so, the paper also discusses why unraveling and filling these gaps has been challenging. Wisdom in organizational settings has often been regarded as an oxymoron, because it has been difficult to conform to conventional notions and ideals of wisdom. This …

Economic Growth And Banking Credit In India, Charan Singh Apr 2016

Economic Growth And Banking Credit In India, Charan Singh

Working Papers

The interdependence between credit expansion and economic growth has been a subject of some debate. While some economists contest that the development of the financial system is a byproduct of economic growth others assert that credit expansion is critical for growth itself. India s impetus on expanding its banking reach and recent changes in the way transactions are being done begs the question whether such changes directly affect the growth trajectory. This paper aims to examine and understand the relationship between credit and growth in India in the last few decades. Different metrics for credit and output is used to …

In The Face Of Anticipation: Decision Making Under Visible Uncertainty As Present In The Safest-With-Sight Problem, Bryan A. Knowles

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Pathfinding, as a process of selecting a fixed route, has long been studied in

Computer Science and Mathematics. Decision making, as a similar, but intrinsically different, process of determining a control policy, is much less studied. Here, I propose a problem that appears to be of the first class, which would suggest that it is easily solvable with a modern machine, but that would be too easy, it turns out. By allowing a pathfinding to anticipate and respond to information, without setting restrictions

on the \structure" of this anticipation, selecting the \best step" appears to be an intractable problem.

A Study On The Sustainable Machining Of Titanium Alloy, Abdulhameed Alaa Dawood Apr 2016

A Study On The Sustainable Machining Of Titanium Alloy, Abdulhameed Alaa Dawood

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Titanium and its alloy (Ti-6Al-4V) are widely used in aerospace industries because of their light weight, high specific strength, and corrosion resistance. This study conducted a comparative experimental analysis of the machinability of Ti-6Al-4V for conventional flood coolant machining and sustainable dry machining. The effect of cutting speed, feed rate, and depth of cut on machining performance has been evaluated for both conditions. The machining time and surface roughness were found to be lower in dry machining compared to flood coolant machining. The tool wear was found to be unpredictable, and no significant difference was observed for dry and coolant …

The Influence Of Tropical Cyclones On Droughts And Warm Season Precipitation In Tennessee And Kentucky, Lamar S. Coats Apr 2016

The Influence Of Tropical Cyclones On Droughts And Warm Season Precipitation In Tennessee And Kentucky, Lamar S. Coats

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The Southeast United States during summer and fall is often affected by droughts and tropical cyclones. Both phenomena rank among the most expensive of natural hazards, although droughts are not as feared by the public as hurricanes. When a tropical cyclone causes a pendulum swing from drought to wet conditions, it is known as a “drought-busting tropical cyclone.” The majority of the research related to drought busting tropical cyclones investigates only the storms during their tropical cyclone phase, which covers the southeastern states that have boundaries adjacent to the Atlantic Ocean. An unanswered question from this literature is whether or …

Developing A Measure Assessing Virtual Organizational Citizenship Behaviors, Samuel Louis Galbraith Apr 2016

Developing A Measure Assessing Virtual Organizational Citizenship Behaviors, Samuel Louis Galbraith

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

In a time when technology is an integral part of life, virtual workplaces are becoming more of a staple in organizations and will likely continue to do so as technology use increases (Cascio, 2000). Due to the rise in virtual workplaces, employees are interacting face-to-face less, and organizations are requiring more from them. Employees must perform behaviors that are outside of their formal job description. These positive behaviors are considered to be organizational citizenship behaviors (OCBs), which are employee behaviors that promote organizational effectiveness that are not part of an employee’s formal job description and are therefore not formally recognized …
