Detection Of Malicious Office Document Macros Using Large Language Models, Mahesh Kalappattil Oct 2025

Detection Of Malicious Office Document Macros Using Large Language Models, Mahesh Kalappattil

Masters Theses & Doctoral Dissertations

Microsoft office document malwares are prevalent today even though some of the macros were developed 30 years ago. The office macros are used as droppers or downloaders for emerging malwares. Though various models have been developed to detect the office document macros, the interpretability and attribution of the model results are not gained attention. Also, even though the models provide high accuracy, the probabilistic uncertainty the models are not addressed either.

This research provides a novel method to classify malicious office document macros measuring interpretability, attribution and probabilistic uncertainty. Our approach combines the function semantics and keyword contexts to leverage …

District Vulnerability Index For Pakistan (Dvip): Harnessing Multisectoral Data To Inform Equitable Policy And Climate Action, Population Council

Climate and Environmental Changes

Pakistan’s highly heterogeneous population faces significant development challenges, including unequal resource distribution and disparities in access to services, which create varying levels of vulnerability across communities. While existing studies have primarily examined vulnerability through climate, economic, or other disaster lenses, they often overlook underlying structural and systemic factors. This study aims to address that gap by developing an index that incorporates domains of vulnerability typically underrepresented in analyses of Pakistan.

“That’S Not My Name”: The Linguistic Violence Of Misnaming Parties In Court Proceedings, Robert S. Chang, Cecily C. Hazelrigg, Linda Cj Lee

Washington Law Review

This Article calls attention to the harms done when parties are misnamed in legal proceedings. Misnaming, which many might initially consider trivial, is properly understood as a form of linguistic violence that can inflict dignitary harms as well as have material consequences. Misnaming takes on a different valence when it is done by the state. This Article focuses on the misnaming of Indigenous, Asian, and Latine people, beginning first with the way misnaming is done by the administrative state. The authors then discuss misnaming as it has operated in legal proceedings, providing both historical and contemporary examples from federal and …

Lost In Transcreation: Llm Performance In Multicultural Creative Work, Murathan Kocaman Oct 2025

Lost In Transcreation: Llm Performance In Multicultural Creative Work, Murathan Kocaman

IPHS 200: Programming Humanity

This study benchmarks four leading LLMs (GPT-5.2, Claude 4.5, Gemini 3, and Grok-4) on cross-cultural advertising transcreation, using Turkish as a particularly revealing test case. Each model generated Turkish billboard taglines for three American brands (Hinge, Manscaped, and Oatly) under real-world constraints, and all outputs were scored using the Levent Index, a 100-point framework I created by synthesizing transcreation best practices with the Turkish linguistic instincts I developed growing up in Istanbul. The Index measures Linguistic Soul (40%), Cultural Resonance (40%), and Structural Flow (20%), and the complete rubric is available upon request. Gemini 3 dominated performance, yet no model …

Rats With Wings: The Villainization Of The Pigeon And Its Portrayal In Modern Art And Literature, Emily Dutton Oct 2025

Rats With Wings: The Villainization Of The Pigeon And Its Portrayal In Modern Art And Literature, Emily Dutton

Honors Theses

For millennia, humans have had an increasingly intimate relationship with pigeons. These birds have been called a wide range of names and served a myriad of purposes alongside their human handlers; however, since the populations of feral rock pigeons have increased in American cities, the general public has ascribed a negative connotation to the pigeons that they were once closely associated with. The increasing populations of pigeons along with their decreasing perceived usefulness to humanity has led to a sharp decline in their image. This thesis aims to examine how the pigeon became so loathed after it was coveted for …

Autism Spectrum Disorder Diagnosed In Adulthood And The Factors That Can Lead To A Late Diagnosis, Camila Velez De Jesus

College of Liberal Arts

Autism spectrum disorder is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects an individual throughout their entire life. The condition is typically diagnosed in childhood, and the rate of children diagnosed with it has been increasing over the years. Cases of adults being diagnosed with autism have also been on the rise. A popular theory to explain this occurrence is the broadening definition of autism spectrum disorder; however, there are other factors that should be taken into account. The use of the Medical Model of Disability in autism diagnosis could have led to certain individuals not being diagnosed in adulthood, but with the …

Decidiendo Lo Mejor Para Su Educación: Immigrant Latine Madres At The Intersection Of Confianza, Ideology, And The Illusion Of Choice, Emmeline Ortiz

Theses and Dissertations

This qualitative multiple case study examined the decision-making processes of immigrant Latine caregivers selecting schools and language programs for their children classified as Multilingual Learners (MLLs) in New York City. Although policy frameworks position caregivers as central decision-makers, bilingual program access remains limited, especially in charter schools, and families must navigate language ideologies that privilege English as the safest educational pathway. Ten immigrant Latine participants, nine mothers and one grandmother, whose children attended traditional or charter elementary schools in one NYC district, shared their experiences through semi-structured interviews conducted in Spanish. Data were analyzed through iterative coding and thematic analysis …

Exploring Student Perceptions Of Culture Within An Algebra Unit: A Qualitative Action Research Study, Alesha Marie Love Oct 2025

Exploring Student Perceptions Of Culture Within An Algebra Unit: A Qualitative Action Research Study, Alesha Marie Love

Theses and Dissertations

Many barriers exist when teaching and learning mathematics. Although the mathematics curriculum is rigid and rigorous by design it is often not culturally relevant for the students engaging with the content. As a result, many students of color do not have an appropriate amount of representation to connect to a subject area that already seems exclusionary. This qualitative action research study examines the effects of introducing culturally relevant references into an Algebra unit for students of color, exploring the influence of exposure to cultural references and the minimal display of cultural and racial identities within the mathematics curriculum on students …

Smarter Disease Detection From Electronic Health Record Data: An End-To-End Ai-Augmented Pipeline For Computable Phenotyping, Dylan Owens Oct 2025

Smarter Disease Detection From Electronic Health Record Data: An End-To-End Ai-Augmented Pipeline For Computable Phenotyping, Dylan Owens

Statistical Science Theses and Dissertations

Electronic Health Records (EHR) contain a wealth of structured and unstructured patient data that can be leveraged for computable phenotyping, the process of algorithmically identifying patient cohorts with specific diseases or conditions. Traditional rule-based phenotyping approaches, while interpretable, often struggle with scalability, portability across institutions, and effective use of unstructured clinical narratives. Recent advances in large language models (LLMs) present new opportunities for synthesizing complex free-text information into concise, clinically meaningful representations. However, integrating LLMs into phenotyping workflows requires careful design to maintain transparency, interpretability, and measurable uncertainty—features essential for clinical adoption and downstream applications such as decision support.

The Erasure And Resilience Of Tionghoa-Indonesian Culture And Identity, John Hines-Shah Oct 2025

The Erasure And Resilience Of Tionghoa-Indonesian Culture And Identity, John Hines-Shah

Indonesia: Arts, Religion, and Social Change

Indonesia is home to the largest diaspora of Chinese people anywhere in the world. Yet, the experiences of Chinese-Indonesians reveal a sustained erasure, discrimination, and pressure to assimilate in the face of political and social tensions. Under Dutch colonial rule, they were placed in a racial hierarchy, placed between Europeans and Indigenous Indonesians, yet excluded from full participation in either group. This structure planted early seeds of mistrust and scapegoating that endured into the post-independence period. After 1945, state policies often sought to assimilate Chinese-Indonesians, restricting cultural expression, closing Chinese-language schools, and encouraging or even requiring the adoption of Indonesian-sounding …

Parameter-Efficient Variational Autoencoder For Multimodal Multi-Interest Recommendation, Nhu Thuat Tran, Hady Wirawan Lauw Oct 2025

Parameter-Efficient Variational Autoencoder For Multimodal Multi-Interest Recommendation, Nhu Thuat Tran, Hady Wirawan Lauw

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Learning user preferences in recommendation systems is enriched by multimodal features, such as textual and visual content, and amplified by multi-interest modeling with Variational AutoEncoders (VAEs). However, prior efforts are limited by single modality focus and cumbersome, parameter-heavy architecture designs. To address these limitations, we introduce an innovative solution that blends the semantic richness of multimodal data with the representational power of multi-representation VAEs. Drawing inspiration from Mixture of Experts (MoE), we cast each VAE as an expert tailored to a specific modality, then fuse them via a novel parameter-merging function into a lean, unified model. This approach efficiently captures …

Memad: Structured Memory Of Debates For Enhanced Multi-Agent Reasoning, Shuai Ling, Lizi Liao, Dongmei Jiang, Weili Guan Oct 2025

Memad: Structured Memory Of Debates For Enhanced Multi-Agent Reasoning, Shuai Ling, Lizi Liao, Dongmei Jiang, Weili Guan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Large Language Models (LLMs) demonstrate remarkable in-context learning capabilities but often struggle with complex, multi-step reasoning. Multi-Agent Debate (MAD) frameworks partially address these limitations by enabling iterative agent interactions. However, they neglect valuable historical insights by treating each new debate independently. In this paper, we propose Memory-Augmented MAD (MeMAD), a parameter-free memory-augmented MAD framework that systematically organizes and reuses past debate transcripts. MeMAD stores structured representations of successful and unsuccessful reasoning attempts enriched with self-reflections and peer feedback. It systematically retrieves them via semantic similarity at inference time to inform new reasoning tasks. Our experiments on challenging mathematical reasoning, scientific …

Traditional And Computational Canons, Eric H. Martinez Oct 2025

Traditional And Computational Canons, Eric H. Martinez

Faculty Scholarship

As part of the rise of modern textualism, dictionaries and linguistic canons have become a ubiquitous part of legal interpretation. One longstanding question is whether judges citing these tools sincerely attempt to follow the meaning of a text, or if their invocation is merely window-dressing for a preferred outcome. The practical significance of this question extends across all major doctrinal areas, and with the Supreme Court’s overturning of Chevron deference, its importance is only to grow, as courts are now instructed to use every tool at their disposal to resolve ambiguity when interpreting a law. This Article is the first …

The Crime Of Being Immoral, Randy D. Gordon Oct 2025

The Crime Of Being Immoral, Randy D. Gordon

Faculty Scholarship

Despite a general abhorrence of retrospective laws as a matter of legal theory and Constitutional dictate, US. courts continue-in es sence-to create new crimes by injecting fazzy moral considerations into determinations under the federal fraud statutes. They do so by deeming a failure to act with "moral uprightness" sufficient to consti tute criminal fraud. Under such an amorphous standard, the unwitting find themselves in a legal bind, even though their conduct may not in volve any of the traditional elements of common-law fraud. This Article traces the roots of novel fraud theories with tools drawn from legal theory, linguistics, and …

Gender, Class, And Code-Switching Among Tunisian Youth, Evie Mount-Cors Oct 2025

Gender, Class, And Code-Switching Among Tunisian Youth, Evie Mount-Cors

Tunisia and Italy: Politics and Religious Integration in the Mediterranean

This study investigates how gender and social class influence the frequency and motivations for code-switching among young Tunisians. Following the French Protectorate (1881) and subsequent Arabization policies in the late 20th century, Tunisian youth are faced with a complex linguistic environment. This paper posits that the enduring legacies of prestige and gender norms drive variation in the frequency and motivation behind code-switching among Tunisian men and women. Based on a quantitative survey and qualitative interviews, this research examines how these social factors shape the function and meaning of language choice in post-colonial Tunisia. The findings suggest that social class creates …
