Every social situation that people encounter in their daily lives comes with a set of unwritten rules about what behavior is considered appropriate or inappropriate. These everyday norms can vary across societies: some societies may have more permissive norms in general or for certain behaviors, or for certain behaviors in specific situations. In a preregistered survey of 25,422 participants across 90 societies, we map societal differences in 150 everyday norms and show that they can be explained by how societies prioritize individualizing moral foundations such as care and liberty versus binding moral foundations such as purity. Specifically, societies with more …

Does The Acquisition Of Spanish Affect The Acquisition Of English? A Longitudinal Study Of Minority-Majority Simultaneous Bilingual Development From 2.5 To 12 Years, Heather J. Johnson Oct 2025

Does The Acquisition Of Spanish Affect The Acquisition Of English? A Longitudinal Study Of Minority-Majority Simultaneous Bilingual Development From 2.5 To 12 Years, Heather J. Johnson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Past work with bilinguals suggests that the acquisition of one language has an impact on the acquisition of another. What is unclear is the direction and strength of the relation between the two languages and whether the relation changes with age. Participants were children in South Florida who heard both Spanish and English at home. They were assessed in expressive (from 2.5 to 12 years) and receptive vocabulary (from 4 to 12 years). Both concurrent bivariate correlations and bivariate splines were used to evaluate the cross-language relations. Results suggest that early in acquisition the two languages compete for resources, but …

Animation Film Industry Of India And Service Design: A Systematic Review Of Literature, Abhishek Kumar, Dr. Shikha Rai, Dr. Sonali Srivastav

ServDes Conference Series

The medium of animation transcends the physical limitations posed by other visual media, combining elements of fantasy with realism. By 2030, the animation business in India is expected to grow from ₹215.8 billion to ₹1.21 trillion. The major companies that dominate this segment in India are Disney and Pixar. The fact that the top 10 highest-grossing animation films in India are all produced by international companies, with ‘Kung Fu Panda 4(2024)’ at the top further demonstrating this foreign domination. Compared to its global counterparts, the Indian animation industry is yet to see the boom, despite the market accepting the medium. …

ServDes Conference Series

Attention to the differentiated capabilities, needs, and expectations of vulnerable groups is an important research focus for inclusive service design. In a context where the increasing complexity of urban sites and industry chains has increased the potential risk of disasters, enhancing public emergency services is related to life safety for vulnerable groups. In disasters, user groups with special needs due to differences in cognitive abilities may be more vulnerable than other populations due to their exposure and crisis response competence. These vulnerable groups have more difficulty accessing emergency information and therefore lack adequate resources for emergency response. However, there is …

Investigating Factors Influencing Organic Chemistry Learners' Explanation Sophistication And Representational Competence, Caroline J. Crowder

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The research presented in this dissertation has two themes: organic chemistry learners’ written explanations and representational competence. Chapters 3 and 4 explore how organic chemistry learners construct explanations of reaction mechanisms, specifically focusing on electrophile and nucleophile components. Chapter 5 investigates organic chemistry learners’ representational competence skills and the relationship between these skills and their performance in the course.

Understanding reaction mechanisms is critical for success in organic chemistry, yet learners often struggle to reason beyond explicit, surface-level features. Constructed-response prompts that ask learners to explain what is happening in a reaction mechanism and why it occurs can provide insight …

Engagement By Design: Belongingness, Cultural Value Orientations, And Pathways Into Emerging Technologies, Daisuke Akiba, Michael Perrone, Caterina Almendral, Rebecca Garte

Publications and Research

This theoretical article examines how belongingness, defined as the sense that one’s participation is legitimate and valued, interacts with cultural value orientations to help explain persistent disparities in U.S. technology engagement, including emerging technologies, across racial and ethnic groups. While structural barriers (e.g., racism, poverty, linguistic bias, etc.) remain essential to understanding such inequity, we argue that engagement patterns in technology also reflect how different cultural communities may define and experience belongingness in relation to digital domains. Drawing on Triandis and Gelfand’s framework, and focusing specifically on educational contexts, we propose the Belongingness through Cultural Value Alignment (BCVA) model, whereby …

Take In Case Of Emergency: Reconciling Necessity Takings With The Original Meaning Of The Takings Clause, Tony Smith Oct 2025

Take In Case Of Emergency: Reconciling Necessity Takings With The Original Meaning Of The Takings Clause, Tony Smith

Northwestern University Law Review

Does the Fifth Amendment’s Takings Clause permit the state to destroy property without compensation whenever it declares an emergency? The long-standing doctrine of necessity empowers the state to do exactly that.

Courts dating back to common law England have permitted governments to claim a privilege of necessity to avoid paying for private property they destroy in times of crisis. The privilege rests on the principle that the public good sometimes outweighs the harm the individual suffers. Today’s courts and academics stretch this principle to its limits, arguing necessity should be used as a vehicle for combating all manner of social …

Real-Time Detection And Indication Of Ai-Generated Content In A Web Browser, Abhay Prakash Oct 2025

Real-Time Detection And Indication Of Ai-Generated Content In A Web Browser, Abhay Prakash

Defensive Publications Series

The proliferation of realistic, AI-generated content creates a significant risk of misinformation, as users often cannot distinguish it from human-created work. Existing detection tools are typically manual (i.e., copy content from one area to paste in a tool), disruptive for the user, and limited to a single content type. This disclosure describes a method integrated directly into a web browser for detection and visual indication of AI-generated content that can operate in real-time. When a user navigates to a web page, a content parsing module analyzes the Document Object Model (DOM). A multi-modal detection engine then scans content, such as …

Every year, millions of Muslim pilgrims gather in Makkah (Saudi Arabia) for Hajj. These pilgrims come from different parts of the world, with diverse language and cultural backgrounds. Managing such a large and diverse congregation for a successful completion of Hajj requires effective planning, which depends on two important antecedents—knowing the background information of the pilgrims and developing effective pre-Hajj training tools for dissemination of Hajj information for non-Arabic speaking pilgrims. This study evaluates the perceptions of potential Hajj pilgrims regarding community translation usability (CTX) and medium usability (MX) of two existing pre-Hajj media tools developed by Mnask Academy (Booklet …

Holding Social Media Providers Liable For Acts Of Domestic Terrorism, Chloe Berryman Oct 2025

Holding Social Media Providers Liable For Acts Of Domestic Terrorism, Chloe Berryman

Florida Law Review

Would the availability of a federal cause of action for domestic terrorism increase the risk of social media providers being held liable for facilitating domestic terrorism? Recently, there have been discussions concerning the role social media plays in acts of domestic terrorism. Many acts of domestic terrorism have been linked to the perpetrator's involvement with online groups who harbor similar goals.

There are several legislative obstacles to successfully suing a social media provider for aiding an act of domestic terrorism. One obstacle is the Antiterrorism Act of 1990 (ATA), which provides a civil remedy for international terrorism but not domestic …

Spiritual Grounding In Sacred Soil: The Picuris/Peñasco Valley As A Model For Catholic Unity Across Cultures, Gabriel Antonio Gonzales Oct 2025

Spiritual Grounding In Sacred Soil: The Picuris/Peñasco Valley As A Model For Catholic Unity Across Cultures, Gabriel Antonio Gonzales

Master of Theological Studies Honors Theses

This thesis examines the Picuris/Peñasco Valley of Northern New Mexico as a unique case study for understanding Catholic unity amidst cultural plurality and historical tension. The study investigates how the confluence of Picuris Pueblo (Tiwa) Indigenous spirituality and Hispano/Spanish Colonial Catholic traditions has forged a profoundly localized and resilient faith community. Drawing upon historical analysis of colonial resistance, cultural anthropology, and theological reflection, this work argues that the concept of sacred land (sacred soil) functions as the central unifying principle. It reveals how the shared commitment to the land facilitated a process of religious and cultural syncretism, creating a form …

Faculty Research 2025

MOTIVATION: Identifying promising therapeutic targets from thousands of genes in transcriptomic studies remains a major bottleneck in biomedical research. While large language models (LLMs) show potential for gene prioritization, they suffer from hallucination and lack systematic validation against expert knowledge.

RESULTS: The framework identified 609 sepsis-relevant genes with >94% filtering efficiency, demonstrating strong enrichment for inflammatory pathways including TNF-α signaling, complement activation, and interferon responses. Literature validation yielded 30 ultra-high confidence therapeutic candidates, including both established sepsis genes (IL10, TREM1, S100A9, NLRP3) and novel targets warranting investigation. Benchmark validation against expert-curated databases achieved 71.2% recall, with systematic correlation between computational …
