Translanguaging Practices Of Chinese/English Bilingual Engineers’ Communications In The Workplace, Juan Du, Xiaodi Zhou May 2022

Translanguaging Practices Of Chinese/English Bilingual Engineers’ Communications In The Workplace, Juan Du, Xiaodi Zhou

Bilingual and Literacy Studies Faculty Publications

Existing literature argues for the urgent need to improve workplace and professional communication in the engineering field across the world. This paper reports on a study examining Chinese/English bilingual engineers’ translanguaging practices in their communications in English-speaking high-tech corporations in the United States. Evidence showed that bilingual engineers translanguaged extensively to construct meaning to meet the diverse communication needs at their workplace, which enables them to demonstrate their professional talents and skills. However, when English was the sole language for the interaction, they struggled to sound like English native speakers to convey their ideas and present their work, which disadvantaged …

Moderation Effects Of Language Skills, Residential Tenure, And Education On Immigrants’ Learning From News, Yulia S. Medvedeva, Glenn M. Leshner

All Works

Authors of the knowledge gap hypothesis predicted television’s potential to narrow the gaps in some circumstances. This online experiment aimed to bound the conditions that facilitate the leveling role of audiovisual news for a foreign-born audience ( N = 137) residing in the United States. Results showed that audiovisual news narrowed the gaps by improving learning for those who scored low on language or U.S. education and by attenuating improvements in learning for those with high language or education scores. Conversely, text news widened the gaps by sizable gains in learning for those with better language or more education.

Leveraging Communities Of Practice And Pedagogies Of Practice To Prepare Ambitious Teachers, Kathleen M. Nitta May 2022

Leveraging Communities Of Practice And Pedagogies Of Practice To Prepare Ambitious Teachers, Kathleen M. Nitta

Northwest Journal of Teacher Education

Ambitious teachers view students as sense makers in collaborative learning of disciplinary ideas and value students’ assets as resources for learning. Preparing teachers to enact ambitious instruction requires an approach to professional learning that constructs connections between instructional practice and a vision of principled teaching. This study explored how pedagogies of practice and communities of practice support prospective teachers’ development of a mathematics teaching practice. The study findings suggest pedagogical activities situated within a community of practice may provide opportunities for prospective teachers to build an understanding of the relationship between a core teaching practice and principles of ambitious teaching.

Linguistically Inclusive Tesol Course Design And Its Effect On Pre-Service Teacher Education, Dylan Thibaut, Irina Mclaughlin

Northwest Journal of Teacher Education

Lack of linguistic awareness prevents teachers from catering to English learners. This study proposed a new linguistically inclusive course and compared pre-service teacher knowledge of the linguistic features of five frequently spoken languages in the course versus standard courses. Odds of a correct answer on linguistic questions increased significantly in 28% of the areas tested. The inclusive course showed increased linguistic awareness compared to standard courses.

Liquid Consonants In Standard Turkish: Features And Phenomena, Utku Zobarlar May 2022

Liquid Consonants In Standard Turkish: Features And Phenomena, Utku Zobarlar

Theses - ALL

The aim of this thesis is to explore aspects of the phonology of liquid sounds - /l/ and /ɾ/ - in Standard (Istanbul) Turkish. The thesis focuses on two questions: i) what feature(s) is responsible for non-high vowel alternations triggered by liquid consonants in syllable codas, and ii) do liquid features play a role in affecting irregular suffixal allomorphy in verbs inflected for the aorist. While Turkish phonology, in general, and Turkish vocalic phonology, in particular, have been well studied (Lees 1961; Clements & Sezer 1982; Kirchner 1993; Kabak 2011, among others), the bearing that liquid consonants and their features …

On The Use And Abuse Of Violence For Life: Affect, Witnessing, And Protest, Harrison Maurice Lucas May 2022

On The Use And Abuse Of Violence For Life: Affect, Witnessing, And Protest, Harrison Maurice Lucas

Theses - ALL

Following the murder of George Floyd in May of 2020 by police officer Derek Chauvin, a protest began in the city of Minneapolis that resulted in the burning down of the third precinct police building, the looting of a local Target, and the destruction of over one hundred buildings in the area. But despite this violence, the Minneapolis uprising sparked a wave of protests that spread to over sixty countries on every continent of the globe. Why was Floyd's murder so politically mobilizing? And why did this protest inspire so many others? To answer these questions, I treat the video …

The 1980 Refugee Act And A New Type Of National Apology, Shewit Mikael May 2022

The 1980 Refugee Act And A New Type Of National Apology, Shewit Mikael

Theses - ALL

In immigrant and refugee discourse studies, the overwhelming focus is on how the nation state excludes certain groups through bureaucratic and legislative practices. This thesis seeks to investigate how power manifests through inclusionary immigration practices such as the 1980 Refugee Act. These intentional acts of allowing entry are, at times, driven by perceptions that the nation has created crises and, in this way, allowing entry might be seen as a form of remediation or reparation. In my investigation of the 1975 and 1980 Refugee Acts, these acts appear to respond to the refugee crisis created by US involvement in Vietnam, …

To Have And To Hold, Michael Kalish

Theses - ALL

The relationship between mere objects, richly aesthetic objects, and the emotional structure ofexperience is considered in three parts. The first part attempts to develop the relationship between object-ness and art-ness from the intellectual tradition of ordinary language philosophy. The first part ends with the death of my wife. The second part provides a view of the emotional structure of grief-experienced in the form of a poem. The third part attempts to reconcile the lost and the kept, as intellectual and emotional structures are re-aligned. The thesis therefore attempts to both show and tell the origin and nature of the material …

The Behaviors Of Bert Attention Heads In Stereotype Detection, Joseph H. Hajjar May 2022

The Behaviors Of Bert Attention Heads In Stereotype Detection, Joseph H. Hajjar

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

We are living in the age of information, where it has become increasingly easy to share ideas, news, and content which are seen by an increasingly large number of people. This increasing scope of the increasing amount of data that is being shared lends itself to the question: how can we determine whether what we are reading promotes a stereotype? Previous work has applied transformer based models in this domain yielding impressive performance, but few studies exist interpreting the nature of attention heads in this task. Our work explores the feature encoding and extraction behaviors of attention heads in transformer …

Civic Education And Citizenship Education: A Qualitative Study Of Secondary Social Studies Teachers' Understandings Of The Concepts And Practices Of Citizenship Education For Immigrant Students, Diana Fidaoui May 2022

Civic Education And Citizenship Education: A Qualitative Study Of Secondary Social Studies Teachers' Understandings Of The Concepts And Practices Of Citizenship Education For Immigrant Students, Diana Fidaoui

Dissertations - ALL

Citizenship education is the bedrock for the (re)making of future adult citizens in mono and multicultural democratic nations, and social studies is typically and optimally the premier discipline that primes students for engaged citizenry. Anti-immigrant sentiments towards fourth wave immigrants and the nearly absent research on and training for teachers in citizenship education for immigrant students rendered the complex preparation of these youngsters for active and participatory roles an increasingly demanding work in progress for social studies teachers in U.S. public schools. This reality challenges teachers' re-examination of historically contested meanings of civic and citizenship education and their citizenship pedagogies …

Between Homeland And Hostland: Imagining Diasporic Indigeneity With The Center For Babaylan Studies, Elizabeth Rae Herrick May 2022

Between Homeland And Hostland: Imagining Diasporic Indigeneity With The Center For Babaylan Studies, Elizabeth Rae Herrick

Theses - ALL

This thesis proposes "diasporic indigeneity" as a new heuristic tool for Religious Studies to capture how diasporic subjects evoke indigeneity through processes of religious/spiritual (re)indigenization. By reconnecting to lost homeland heritages while learning new hostland responsibilities, diasporic indigeneity begins to articulate how diasporic people can "belong to place(s)." Through textual analysis and ethnographic methods, the Center for Babaylan Studies (CfBS) serves as my case study. They represent an organization for Filipinx-Americans who grapple with colonial mentality from the historical colonization of the Philippines and their imbrication in ongoing Turtle Island settler colonialism. To heal from these intergenerational wounds, the CfBS …

An Exploration Of Self-Identity Experiences Within The Lives Of Afro-Caribbean Women Undergraduate College Students: A Feminist Phenomenological Study, Shana J. Gelin

Dissertations - ALL

The purpose of this feminist phenomenological dissertation was to explore the self-identity experiences of Afro-Caribbean women undergraduate college students. In doing so, self-identity experiences, ethnic marginalization, and counseling experiences were explored for six participants. Data was collected and analyzed using Simone De Beauvoir's feminist framework of self-discovery/ rediscovery where two semi-structured interviews were conducted for each participant. This study resulted in six individual profiles illuminating the voices of each participant as well as collective themes. Findings from this study show that Afro-Caribbean women undergraduate college students filter their self-identity experiences through their ethnicity; meaning that participants understand other pieces of …

Dissertations - ALL

In professional and other social settings, networks play an important role in people's lives. The communication between individuals and their positions in the network, may have a large impact on many aspects of their lives. In this work, I evaluate fairness from different perspectives.First, tomeasurefairnessfromgroupperspective,Iproposethenovelinformation unfairness criterion, which measures whether information spreads fairly to different groups in a network. Using this criterion, I perform a case study and measure fairness in information flow in different computer science co-authorship networks with respect to gender. Then, I consider two applications and show how to increase fairness with respect to a fairness metric. The first …

Adjusting To Change: Learning American Sign Language Online During A Global Pandemic, Kara Gournaris May 2022

Adjusting To Change: Learning American Sign Language Online During A Global Pandemic, Kara Gournaris

Northwest Journal of Teacher Education

Second language acquisition of American Sign Language (ASL) requires opportunities for engagement with native language models (Krashen, 1988). The shift to online instruction due to the impact of COVID-19 presented unique challenges for ASL programs across the United States. With little time to redesign courses, instructors and students had to navigate the experience of online learning together. The students who participated in this 2020 study at Western Oregon University (WOU) shared their raw experiences related to this transition, and unfortunately, one year later, many of the same barriers reported by students persist. The purpose of this article is to share …

Self-Study, Ideology, And Teacher’S Self-Knowledge In Guiding Curriculum Decisions, Antonio R. Causarano Dr. May 2022

Self-Study, Ideology, And Teacher’S Self-Knowledge In Guiding Curriculum Decisions, Antonio R. Causarano Dr.

Northwest Journal of Teacher Education

What a teacher believes and envisions as an educator has a profound influence on teaching and learning. This paper explores the importance of self-study and teacher’s ideology as a methodology to systematically assess the evolutionary nature of teacher’s ideology and its importance in envisioning teaching and learning in K-12 education. Ideology is used in this paper to analyze how self-reflective practices and self-study are part of ideological formations in teachers and how a systematic analysis of teacher’s ideology is the lens through which we are able to unpack and critically analyze the impact that ideology has on curriculum and instruction …

A More Efficient And Effective Objective Measure Of Financial Disclosure Quality: Omissions Of Seven Key Financial Statement Variables, Ying Zhang

Dissertations - ALL

This dissertation research includes three Chapters. Chapter One proposes a new and simple measure of financial reporting quality. Chapter Two and Chapter Three apply this new measure to examine the association between financial reporting quality and firms' internal governance issues, such as internal control quality and a possible outcome of internal control weakness (ICW), financial restatements. In Chapter One of the thesis, I propose a parsimonious, theory-based and empirically-supported measure of missing variables, REPORT. Chen et al. (2015) proposes a measure of disclosure quality, DQ, based on missing financial statement variables. DQ includes hundreds of items and is complex to program. …

Dementia Classification Through Textual Analysis With Machine Learning Algorithms, Joseph Hurowitz

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

The goal of this work is to build a classifier that can identify whether a patient is suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease of the Dementia Type (AD). A corpus of 2751 texts was used from the DementiaBank database, where each conversation is transcribed and marked using the CHAT format. Each text was analyzed by frequency of disfluencies, use of aphasic language, and lexical features. All parsed data was used to train a Random Forest, Naïve Bayes, and Support Vector Machine algorithm. These classification algorithms will be tested on the combination of all features, as well as each set of features individually.

The Effect Of Social Primes On The Perception Of Native- And Nonnative-Accented Speech, Drew J. Mclaughlin May 2022

The Effect Of Social Primes On The Perception Of Native- And Nonnative-Accented Speech, Drew J. Mclaughlin

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Listeners use more than just acoustic information when processing speech. Social information, such as a speaker’s race/ethnicity, can also affect listeners’ understanding of the speech signal. In some cases, these social primes can facilitate perception, while in others they may inhibit perception. Indeed, a picture of an East Asian face has been shown to facilitate the perception of Mandarin Chinese-accented English but interfere with the perception of American-accented English. The present dissertation builds on this line of inquiry, addressing novel topics including the generalizability and specificity of social priming effects, their relationship with implicit racial/ethnic associations, and their role in …

Representations Of The Cuban Revolution In The American Gaze: The Case Of African-American Activists, Orlando Luis Pardo Lazo May 2022

Representations Of The Cuban Revolution In The American Gaze: The Case Of African-American Activists, Orlando Luis Pardo Lazo

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

For more than six decades, the Cuban Revolution has been the object of representation by foreign authors―historians, anthropologists, sociologists, political scientists, and also poets and writers. After the triumph of Fidel Castro on January 1, 1959, his revolution captured the imagination of U.S. intellectuals and activists. Many of them traveled to Cuba to become witnesses of the radical transformations that were taking place there. In my dissertation, I suggest that visiting Cuba was important for them to authenticate their views. Writing from Castro’s Cuba lent legitimacy to their narratives, with which they hoped to influence U.S. public opinion. My focus is …

The Myriad Of Things: Paleoethnobotany Of The Chenopodium Album Aggregate In Northern China, Mana Hayashi Tang May 2022

The Myriad Of Things: Paleoethnobotany Of The Chenopodium Album Aggregate In Northern China, Mana Hayashi Tang

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Carbonized macrobotanical remains of the Chenopodium album aggregate (Amaranthaceae) are highly ubiquitous at archaeological sites. These chenopods are early successional plants and ruderals, which grow well in disturbed ecosystems, including those that they co-habit and co-create with humans. Often distinguished from known agricultural crops (e.g., rice, millet) as a weed, chenopods have received less attention in early food culture studies, despite their ethnohistory as a grain crop, vegetable, and famine food. Their seed remains in northern China exhibit regionally variable morphological attributes, different from those seen in chenopod cultivars of the Americas. Their morphological variability may be a result of …

Constructing Roles And Discourse: Presidential Speech And European Union Accession In The Former Yugoslavia, 2000-2021, John Horner

Dissertations

Yugoslavia’s dissolution in the 1990s resulted in seven distinct nation-states vying for functional institutions, ethno-nationalistic coalescence, and external validation. To this end the European Union (EU) offered a pathway to nation-state building and membership via democratization, economic liberalization, and legal and civil improvements. However, to date only Slovenia (2004) and Croatia (2013) are EU member-states. Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Serbia are candidate countries. Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo are potential candidates. What are the incentives for Western Balkan countries to reform and join the EU? Were motivations driven by rational, economic benefits of membership, or was the impetus identity-oriented to …
