American Becoming : Poetics, Space, And Race In The Travel Narratives Of Herman Melville And Jack Kerouac, Yun Song Oct 2022

American Becoming : Poetics, Space, And Race In The Travel Narratives Of Herman Melville And Jack Kerouac, Yun Song

Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)

This dissertation examines the travel narratives of Herman Melville and Jack Kerouac arguing that these works epitomize a literary ”becoming” in American history. Being a crucial component of Gilles Deleuze’s positive ontology, this ”becoming” mirrors a multiple and constant transformation toward the minor, the marginal, and the non-white and resonates rigorously with the literature of Melville and Kerouac. The representative works by these two canonical American authors, namely, Typee: A Peep at Polynesian Life (1846) and On the Road (1957), construct aesthetic spaces in which readers are called upon to appreciate the American life of becoming-Pacific and becoming-beat. The geographical …

The Communicative Function Of Gender In Italian, Joseph C. M. Davis Oct 2022

The Communicative Function Of Gender In Italian, Joseph C. M. Davis

Publications and Research

An analysis of gender in modern literary Italian based on attested examples from various genres. The evidence-based hypothesis, thoroughly noncanonical, proposes a system of morphologically signaled meanings, and these are not the traditional categories "feminine" and "masculine." Even the familiar and misleading term "gender" is replaced. The analysis concerns primarily what is typically called "grammatical gender, although it stands to inform too the use of Italian in communication having to do with human cultural gender. The analysis concerns primarily what might be called "variable gender" (essentially adjectives) although it stands to inform too the problem of "invariable gender" (essentially, nouns).

Building A Sustainable Social Feedback Loop: A Machine Intelligence Approach For Twitter Opinion Mining, Ahmed Abdelhafeez, Alber Aziz, Nariman Khalil Oct 2022

Building A Sustainable Social Feedback Loop: A Machine Intelligence Approach For Twitter Opinion Mining, Ahmed Abdelhafeez, Alber Aziz, Nariman Khalil

Sustainable Machine Intelligence Journal

This paper presents a sustainable machine intelligence approach for Twitter opinion mining, focusing on building a socially responsible feedback loop. We propose a methodology that combines advanced machine learning algorithms with eco-conscious practices to extract sentiment-related insights from Twitter data while minimizing environmental impact. The preprocessing steps involve removing special characters, tokenization, stop word removal, handling user handles and URLs, and lemmatization or stemming. Sentiment classification is performed using the Extra Tree Classifier, an ensemble learning algorithm that incorporates random feature selection and bagging techniques. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach in accurately classifying tweets into positive, negative, …

Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship

To commemorate the 200th anniversary of Oliver Cowdery’s birth on 3 October 1806, more than a dozen scholars treated crowds in the BYU Conference Center to fresh perspectives on Cowdery as a central figure in the Restoration. Entitled “Oliver Cowdery: Restoration Witness, Second Elder,” the symposium featured cultural historian Richard L. Bushman as keynote speaker and several other distinguished speakers spread throughout four sessions of three or four concurrent presentations each. Cosponsors of the five-hour event, held on 10 November, were the Mormon Historic Sites Foundation and BYU’s Religious Studies Center.

Second Service: 28 U.S.C. § 1448 And State Court Service Of Process After Removal, Leigh Forsyth

Fordham Law Review

28 U.S.C. § 1448 governs the requirements of process after removal, providing that when defendants are not completely or perfectly served prior to removal, plaintiffs may complete such process or service, or new process may be issued in the same manner as in cases originally filed in the district court. There remains an open question as to whether state court service issued prior to removal, but served after removal, retains its efficacy in federal court under § 1448. This open question has led to divergent interpretations among district courts, with differing consequences. As of this Note’s publication, at least twenty-seven …

Dividing Lines: Comparing Predictors Of Public Policy Preferences Toward Refugees And Local Involvement In Immigration Enforcement In A U.S. State, Grant E. Rissler, Brittany Keegan Oct 2022

Dividing Lines: Comparing Predictors Of Public Policy Preferences Toward Refugees And Local Involvement In Immigration Enforcement In A U.S. State, Grant E. Rissler, Brittany Keegan

Journal of Public Management & Social Policy

Following the norm breaking immigration policies of the departed Trump administration, which drastically reduced refugee admissions and pressured state and local governments to join in identifying and deporting unauthorized immigrants, the current Biden administration faces significant choices about the pace and degree of any potential roll back of such Trump policies. In this moment, the importance of the understudied local and state dimensions of migration and integration of newcomers increases for public management and intergovernmental policy research. Numerous studies have tied the creation of national level policy toward immigrants to the examination of national and international public attitudes toward immigrants …

E-Mentorship In Speech-Language Pathology, Mohamed Taiebine, Louise C. Keegan Oct 2022

E-Mentorship In Speech-Language Pathology, Mohamed Taiebine, Louise C. Keegan

Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders

Current literature on mentorship stems from the fields of higher education, intercultural psychology and counseling and focuses on the personal, interpersonal, and professional aspects that facilitate positive and successful relationships. However, these aspects have seldom been explored in speech- language pathology literature even though mentorship occurs in all facets of the field (student training, as well as clinical and academic settings). Despite a growing consensus in the field that mentorship promotes the development of theoretical and clinical knowledge, there is a dearth of speech-language pathology research exploring collaborative and synergistic frameworks of mentorship which promote interpersonal skill development. Such learning …

Lowell, Stephanie Mcmillen, Anita L. Lightburn, Jamie L. Desjardins, Ellyn A. Riley

Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders

The critical lack of racially and ethnically diverse healthcare professionals in the field of Communication Sciences & Disorders (CSD) in contrast to the increasing diversity of the U.S. population may contribute to healthcare disparities and negatively impact healthcare outcomes. It is therefore imperative for transformational programs and practices to be enacted to substantially increase the number of CSD professionals representing Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC). As training institutions that graduate and contribute to the certification of CSD professionals, universities are fundamental for contributing to this change. Numerous barriers have been identified that limit the number of underrepresented minority …

A Tautology Or Two While We Translate Chinese Classics, Sabina Knight, Kidder Smith Oct 2022

A Tautology Or Two While We Translate Chinese Classics, Sabina Knight, Kidder Smith

World Literature: Faculty Publications

What is a Chinese classic, and why do we translate one? These innocent questions lead Sabina Knight and Kidder Smith into a mandala of paradox, metaphor, and tautologies. En route they must negotiate a field of errant nouns, shifty images, and undisclosed participants. Relying on maps drawn by Borges, A. A. Milne, Quine, and Zeno, they find themselves in a landscape where little is certain and much is in transit—from here to here. The generic passports of poetry, prose, and philosophy have been stamped Invalid. So everyone acts like a resident alien. The authors discover that what they don't know …

Becoming Culturally Proficient Qualitative Researchers By Crossing Geographic And Methodological Borders, Corinne Brion, Carol Rogers-Shaw Oct 2022

Becoming Culturally Proficient Qualitative Researchers By Crossing Geographic And Methodological Borders, Corinne Brion, Carol Rogers-Shaw

Educational Leadership Faculty Publications

This article explores how novice researchers develop a scholarly identity as they cross geographic, cultural, institutional, identity, and methodological borders throughout their studies, experiencing insider, outsider, and in-betweener positions. It hypothesizes that researchers become more culturally proficient through their fieldwork and self-study. The autoethnographic narratives address the social justice issues encountered by two early career researchers who increased their cultural proficiency and self-awareness as they moved across multiple cultural contexts. By shifting back and forth between insider, outsider, and in-betweener, the researchers became more culturally proficient, developed their voices as researchers, and practiced inclusivity by amplifying marginalized voices. Their self-reflective …
