Understanding Toxic Cycles And How To Defeat Them: How Poetry Can Heal, Tosha Marie Brown Oct 2022

Understanding Toxic Cycles And How To Defeat Them: How Poetry Can Heal, Tosha Marie Brown

Masters Theses

Cathartic writing dates back millennia. Poetry, as a form of therapy, has been used in history to nurture the soul. Its effects go deeper than spiritually, and has been shown to aid in dealing with depression, anxiety and negative behaviors.

Becoming Culturally Proficient Qualitative Researchers By Crossing Geographic And Methodological Borders, Corinne Brion, Carol Rogers-Shaw Oct 2022

Becoming Culturally Proficient Qualitative Researchers By Crossing Geographic And Methodological Borders, Corinne Brion, Carol Rogers-Shaw

The Qualitative Report

This article explores how novice researchers develop a scholarly identity as they cross geographic, cultural, institutional, identity, and methodological borders throughout their studies, experiencing insider, outsider, and in-betweener positions. It hypothesizes that researchers become more culturally proficient through their fieldwork and self-study. The autoethnographic narratives address the social justice issues encountered by two early career researchers who increased their cultural proficiency and self-awareness as they moved across multiple cultural contexts. By shifting back and forth between insider, outsider, and in-betweener, the researchers became more culturally proficient, developed their voices as researchers, and practiced inclusivity by amplifying marginalized voices. Their self-reflective …

The Shared Experiences Of Privilege And Oppression Among Black Females In Counselor Education And Supervision Programs: A Thematic Analysis, Kimberly Spellman Oct 2022

The Shared Experiences Of Privilege And Oppression Among Black Females In Counselor Education And Supervision Programs: A Thematic Analysis, Kimberly Spellman

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Because the United States has one of the most complex cultural identities in the Western world, it is essential that counselors and counselor educators develop the multicultural and social justice competencies needed to work within this diverse society. To this end, counselor educators must have awareness of their own knowledge, beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors related to privilege, oppressions, social group status, etc., as well as to be aware of the intersectionality of privilege and oppression across one’s various identities. This is particularly important given that research suggests that the intersectional privilege and oppression dynamics often experienced by Black females facing …

“Socialist In Form, National In Content” The Evolution Of National Policy In Communist Russia And Poland: 1917-1953, Kaitlyn Marie Selzler Oct 2022

“Socialist In Form, National In Content” The Evolution Of National Policy In Communist Russia And Poland: 1917-1953, Kaitlyn Marie Selzler

History Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity

The history of conflict in the relationship between Russia and Poland can be traced back to the very first partition of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth that occurred in 1772. Over the course of three partitions carried out by the empires of Russian, Prussia, and Austria, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth ceased to exist by 1795. Despite the loss of their nation on the world map, Poles in each of the partitions managed to retain some level of national consciousness. In the Polish-Russian partition, this national consciousness contributed to a sense of opposition between the Russian empire and the Polish nation. Ultimately, the oppositional …

Upper Elementary Teachers' Experiences Supporting Struggling Readers Using Morphological Awareness Instruction: A Phenomenology, Keyshaze Michelle Ward

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This transcendental phenomenological study aimed to examine teachers’ lived experiences with supporting struggling readers using morphological awareness in a public school district in the metropolitan Washington, D.C. area. The central research question guiding this study was, “How do upper elementary educators describe their experiences with morphological awareness instruction to support struggling readers?” The theories guiding the study were the lexical quality hypothesis (LQH) and self-efficacy. This transcendental phenomenological study sampled upper elementary grade educators (4-6 grades) in a public school setting, and data were gathered via interviews, journal prompts, and focus groups. Data were analyzed using steps outlined by Moustakas …

Where Are They Now? The 2020 Status Of Early (1996-2003) Online Digital Humanities Projects And An Analysis Of Institutional Factors Correlated To Their Survival, Drew E. Vandecreek Oct 2022

Where Are They Now? The 2020 Status Of Early (1996-2003) Online Digital Humanities Projects And An Analysis Of Institutional Factors Correlated To Their Survival, Drew E. Vandecreek

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

Researchers have suggested that free-use digital humanities websites remain online for an average of five years and that larger, more functionally specialized and wealthier institutions are more likely than other organizations to continue to make them available online for a long period after their initial development. A study of 59 websites created with funds provided by the National Endowment for the Humanities Education Development and Demonstration program 1996–2003 reveals a different situation. The data show that 68% of these websites remained online for free use in September, 2020, suggesting an online lifespan of approximately eleven to sixteen years. Further statistical …

Natural Language Processing Faculty Publications

Recent years have witnessed the proliferation of offensive content online such as fake news, propaganda, misinformation, and disinformation. While initially this was mostly about textual content, over time images and videos gained popularity, as they are much easier to consume, attract more attention, and spread further than text. As a result, researchers started leveraging different modalities and combinations thereof to tackle online multimodal offensive content. In this study, we offer a survey on the state-of-the-art on multimodal disinformation detection covering various combinations of modalities: text, images, speech, video, social media network structure, and temporal information. Moreover, while some studies focused …

Intertextualidad Y Cultura En La Traducción Literaria De Gods Of Jade And Shadow Por Silvia Moreno-García, Mayra Can Oct 2022

Intertextualidad Y Cultura En La Traducción Literaria De Gods Of Jade And Shadow Por Silvia Moreno-García, Mayra Can

Theses and Dissertations

Language and culture are inextricably connected. This bond represents a constant challenge for translators. Novels and other literary texts add intertextuality to the mix, often complicating the linguistic transmission of all the pertinent elements from the source text to the target text. Current translation theories by Katharina Reiss, Lawrence Venuti, Christiane Nord, among others, offer analyses, explanations, strategies, and techniques to meet the challenges.

The aim of this thesis is to provide a faithful, idiomatic, and authoritative English to Spanish translation of three selected chapters of Gods of Jade and Shadow, a historical fantasy novel by Mexican-Canadian writer Silvia …

Diplomacy Syllabi

This course surveys the politics of cultural and ethnic/national pluralism, understood in terms of the diversity in cultural, linguistic, religious and other socio-demographic variables that are shaping the contemporary world, and their impact on the international system and the practice of international relations. The course focuses on the salient issues that have taken center stage in the modern world, and deals with general issues related to the rise of politicized ethnicity and other cultural cleavages around the world. This includes examination of the possible factors that contributed to the rise of ethnic, religious, linguistic and other parochial attachments, and the …

Psychometric Properties Of The Dyadic Coping Inventory (Dci), Amorita Christella Anggamsari, Fitri Andriani Oct 2022

Psychometric Properties Of The Dyadic Coping Inventory (Dci), Amorita Christella Anggamsari, Fitri Andriani

International Conference on Assessment and Learning (ICAL)

A survey conducted by The Indonesian Central Bureau of Statistics (Badan Pusat Statistik/BPS Indonesia) last year has found that the divorce rate in Indonesia had increased up to 53,50% compared to the data in 2020, and more than half of the divorce cases happened because of “unsolved conflicts between couples”. Out of various studies on marital or romantic relationships done internationally, it suggests that dyadic coping could be the protective factor in the relationship between stress and the couples’ well-being. According to a meta-analysis study held in 2015 along with systematic literature reviews published in 2019 and 2022 regarding the …

Noisy Label Regularisation For Textual Regression, Yuxia Wang, Timothy Baldwin, Karin Verspoor Oct 2022

Noisy Label Regularisation For Textual Regression, Yuxia Wang, Timothy Baldwin, Karin Verspoor

Natural Language Processing Faculty Publications

Training with noisy labelled data is known to be detrimental to model performance, especially for high-capacity neural network models in low-resource domains. Our experiments suggest that standard regularisation strategies, such as weight decay and dropout, are ineffective in the face of noisy labels. We propose a simple noisy label detection method that prevents error propagation from the input layer. The approach is based on the observation that the projection of noisy labels is learned through memorisation at advanced stages of learning, and that the Pearson correlation is sensitive to outliers. Extensive experiments over real-world human-disagreement annotations as well as randomly-corrupted …

Deconstructing The University: Contemporary Dei, Neoliberal Rationalities, And The Abolition Of The Administrative Apparatus, Jonah Henkle Oct 2022

Deconstructing The University: Contemporary Dei, Neoliberal Rationalities, And The Abolition Of The Administrative Apparatus, Jonah Henkle

Media and Cultural Studies Honors Projects

The following chapters attempt to develop some working theories to combat capitalist exploitation and racist and gendered oppression in the university, culminating in a call for the abolition of the university’s administrative apparatus. The project is divided broadly into two parts, which are referential to each other, but maintain slightly different areas of focus. Part 1 details a preliminary critique of the political-economy of the contemporary neoliberal university, drawing influence from Marxian economics and structuralist theories of ideology, critiquing contemporary discourses of diversity, equity and inclusivity (DEI). Part 2 focuses more directly on issues pertaining to oppression and difference, maintaining …

Chapter 03: Multimedia Learning Theory And Instructional Message Design, Miguel Ramlatchan Oct 2022

Chapter 03: Multimedia Learning Theory And Instructional Message Design, Miguel Ramlatchan

Instructional Message Design, Volume 2

Multimedia learning theory describes how the designers of instructional messages, systems and learning environments can optimize learning. The principles and heuristics of multimedia learning theory have application in traditional and online environments, with young and adult learners, in K-12, higher education, military, corporate, government, and informal learning environments. This diversity of application is based on the foundational premise that all learners can independently process auditory and visual information, have limited working memory resources, and require cognitive resources to process new information and to learn. This chapter describes the basic tenets of multimedia learning theory, best practices that can improve our …

Communication And Social Interactions In The Late Middle Ages: The Fables By The Swiss-German Dominican Ulrich Bonerius, Albrecht Classen Oct 2022

Communication And Social Interactions In The Late Middle Ages: The Fables By The Swiss-German Dominican Ulrich Bonerius, Albrecht Classen

Quidditas

There are many possible and useful approaches to the study of literature. One very effective way proves to be to study literary texts as platforms to explore the meaning, relevance, and workings of human communication, or the very opposite, miscommunication. Such an approach proves to be rather productive both for medieval and modern texts, from the western and the eastern tradition, whether we are reflecting on entertaining, moral, didactic, religious, or political texts. The literary work consists of words exchanged, and thus here we encounter the perfect example of a theoretical platform to discuss human interactions in many different contexts …

Linguistic Failure And The “Trembling Parole” In Alain Chartier’S Belle Dame Sans Mercy, Alani Hicks-Bartlett Oct 2022

Linguistic Failure And The “Trembling Parole” In Alain Chartier’S Belle Dame Sans Mercy, Alani Hicks-Bartlett

Quidditas

At first blush, Alain Chartier’s late medieval poem, the Belle Dame sans mercy seems to recount a story that is quite similar to narrations of other frustrated affairs in the courtly love tradition, as it tells of a devoted lover who relentlessly, yet unsuccessfully, begs for the euphemistic “mercy” of his lady. Plying the lady with compliments, assailing her with threats, and attempting to verbally manipulate her, the lover endeavors to force the lady to love him through various unsuccessful linguistic strategies. Although he commits to the lady and presents her with countless arguments about why she should cede to …

"Women, Life, Freedom": Media And Uprisings In Iran, Alexander J. Ham-Kucharski

Student Work

This research analyzes the use of Marjane Satrapi’s graphic novels: Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood (2003) and Persepolis 2: The Story of a Return (2003) and her film Persepolis (2007) in regard to how media can teach history and political unrest and protestation, and how much of what is occurring in present day Iran of protests in regard to the death of Masha Amini and how the use of the hajib, while often a western feminist construct used to establish “orientalism “ of Muslim women, also is a deeply rooted metaphor of the restrictions of women in Iran and …

Confuse The Issues: Art, Text, And Identity, Shannon Egan Oct 2022

Confuse The Issues: Art, Text, And Identity, Shannon Egan

Schmucker Art Catalogs

Confuse the Issues: Art, Text, and Identity features text-based works by prominent contemporary artists of color who demonstrate the power of language. Not only are the words central to the compositions of each photograph, sculpture, and print, but they also provide expressions of identity, reflections on history, and calls to action. In reading both the linguistic and aesthetic narratives in the works on display, a viewer encounters stories that are at once critical and inclusive, verbal and visual, personal and political. The artists use assertive poetry, dynamic admonitions, and a clear naming of victims of police violence to question white …

Antinomies Of Organizing, Mie Inouye Oct 2022

Antinomies Of Organizing, Mie Inouye

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

AbstractAntinomies of Organizing This dissertation theorizes a problem that attends all attempts to form or deepen democracy, namely, the problem of democratic transitions. People are shaped as political subjects by their participation in the institutions that govern their lives; their analyses of society, their self-understandings, and their political capacities are determined in large part by their participation in the state, the family, the workplace, and the market. When these institutions are oppressive, they may undermine participants’ capacities to engage in political action, to recognize and identify the sources of their oppression, and to self-govern. They may also undermine their sense …

The Ambassadors: Indigenous Democracy And American Monarchy After The War Of 1812, Zachary Conn Oct 2022

The Ambassadors: Indigenous Democracy And American Monarchy After The War Of 1812, Zachary Conn

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This dissertation investigates sites of state activity in the early United States which have received far less attention from historians than executive mansions, legislative halls, courtrooms, military outposts, or overseas embassies: the numerous embassies the federal government maintained on, or adjacent to, lands belonging to North America’s sovereign Indigenous polities. At the helm of each of these embassies, known as Indian agencies, sat a presidentially appointed ambassador known as the Indian agent. I argue that Indian agents were monarchical officers within a republican system, compelled to follow diplomatic scripts originating in the centuries of contact between European monarchies and Indigenous …

Virtue Signals: Narrative, Self-Transformation, And Behavioral Exemplarity In Xv-Century Italian Renaissance Humanist Biography In Poland And Ukraine, Michael Thomas Lo Piano

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This dissertation approaches the question which follows: who was the first Renaissance humanist in the Polish Crown Lands? As such, it attempts to reconcile the scholarly debate across a number of linguistic traditions regarding the identity and origin of the humanist movement in East Central Europe. It principally focuses on the Tuscan humanist Filippo Buonaccorsi (Callimachus Experiens) and his biography of Archbishop Grzegorz of Sanok entitled the Vita et mores Gregorii Sanocei. It examines the literary structure and form of the biography to assess Buonaccorsi’s claims regarding the origins of humanism in the Polish Crown Lands and evaluates these claims …

Novel Erudition: Experience And Expertise In Contemporary French-Language Fictions, Sophia Helverson Oct 2022

Novel Erudition: Experience And Expertise In Contemporary French-Language Fictions, Sophia Helverson

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Erudition, as a rich intellectual dialogue with literature and ideas, is what allows the individual “d’exercer sa liberté,” according to French author Céline Minard. In this dissertation, I examine what it means to consider erudition as fundamental not just to intellectual freedom, but to experience itself. Here, I argue that erudition, far from a retreat from reality, is a means of engaging more deeply with the world. As a union of experience and expertise, erudition is a means to understand and to grapple with the constraints upon us, and, as it manifests in fiction, it is also a means to …

Attribution methods (Lipovetsky and Conklin, 2001; Štrumbelj et al., 2009; Simonyan et al., 2014; Zeiler and Fergus, 2014; Bach et al., 2015; Ribeiro et al., 2016; Shrikumar et al., 2017a; Murdoch et al., 2018; Sundararajan et al., 2017; Sundararajan and Najmi, 2020, inter alia) are a family of local interpretability techniques that measure the “contribution” of input features towards an individual model output. In natural language processing (NLP), attribution methods are often used to identify input tokens (e.g., Li et al., 2016, 2017; Arras et al., 2017b; Jumelet et al., 2019) or neural network units (e.g., Lakretz et al., 2019; …

Social Interaction With Native Speakers’ Effect On Foreign Language Enjoyment And Foreign Language Anxiety, Emma Stravers

Selected Honors Theses

This study yielded data surrounding the relationship between knowing a native speaker and foreign language acquisition, alongside the factors of foreign language enjoyment and foreign language anxiety. Through a survey conducted with 46 language learners from a variety of backgrounds who were contacted through social media, the research questions guiding the study were answered with implications for all language learners both inside and outside the classroom. Through statistical analysis, data proved that knowing a native speaker of the target language is a significant predictor of language learners having a higher perception of proficiency. A higher perception of proficiency is also …
