Information Sciences Letters

This study aimed to determine the level of acceptance of infographics apps among preservice teachers at Kuwait University and examine the effect of several independent variables on the level of acceptance. It used exploratory quasi- experimental descriptive analysis based primarily on a quantitative approach and specifically adopted the information and communication technology acceptance model (ICTAM). A stratified sample of 162 preservice female teachers from the College of Education at Kuwait University participated in this study. The participants were introduced to and trained on various infographics apps. At the end of the semester, an anonymous questionnaire was administered through an online …

Applicability Of Emotion To Intelligent Systems, Dionéia Motta Monte-Serrat, Carlo Cattani Oct 2022

Applicability Of Emotion To Intelligent Systems, Dionéia Motta Monte-Serrat, Carlo Cattani

Information Sciences Letters

We propose to investigate the connection between emotions and cognition in intelligent systems through the dynamic concept of language, which links context to logic in both human and machine language. For this, our approach is inspired on aspects of the information theory of Abraham Moles. We analyze emotions under the semantic dimension, linked to a subjective context, which gives rise or not to decisions. We demonstrate that intelligent systems can, on the one hand, work with previously categorized emotions (say in a frozen context); or, on the other hand, process information under a dynamic aspect. This is possible when considering …

Integration Of Computer Vision And Natural Language Processing In Multimedia Robotics Application, Amir El-Komy, Osama R. Shahin, Rasha M. Abd El-Aziz, Ahmed I. Taloba

Information Sciences Letters

Computer vision and natural language processing (NLP) are two active machine learning research areas. However, the integration of these two areas gives rise to a new interdisciplinary field, which is currently attracting more attention of researchers. Research has been carried out to extract the text associated with an image or a video that can assist in making computer vision effective. Moreover, researchers focus on utilizing NLP to extract the meaning of words through the use of computer vision. This concept is widely used in robotics. Although robots should observe the surroundings from different ways of interactions, natural gestures and spoken …

The Relationship Between The Use Of Emoticons And Virtual Engagement On Facebook Among The Expatriates In The Uae, Amr Assad

Information Sciences Letters

This study explores the practice of utilizing emoticons on Facebook and the different levels of virtual engagement according to gender among the expatriates in United Arab Emirates. The primary responses from 236 expatriates were collected using survey questionnaire. The data collected included demographic variables that constitute gender, age and nationality, frequency, social engagement level and motives of use of emoticons. The variables were analyzed using frequencies, correlations and t- tests. The results of the analysis show that both males and females used emoticons on Facebook; however, emoticons were used more frequently in personal communication than on official chats. It was …

Language Assessment And Writer Identity In Higher Education: A Qualitative Analysis Of Labeling Learners Through Placement Tests, Tizreena Binti Mohd Ismail, Najeh Rajeh Alsalhi

Information Sciences Letters

This study aims to explore the assessment process that labels the language abilities of students even before they begin their first year of undergraduate education at the University. The study was conducted in three ways: first, enumerating stances in the literature that demonstrate how institutionalized labels as a result of the assessment can lead to conflicting identities in students, especially in higher education; secondly, presenting qualitative data on assessment practices and their relationship in instilling a contradictory, deficit writer identity in students. Thirdly, arguing that assessment which labels students affect learner motivation and writer confidence of students ultimately creating negativity …

Whose Voice Matters? Chronotopic Position(Ing)S And The Dialogic Inclusion Of Marginalized Stakeholders In Critical Applied Linguistics, Lydia Catedral, Madina Djuraeva Oct 2022

Whose Voice Matters? Chronotopic Position(Ing)S And The Dialogic Inclusion Of Marginalized Stakeholders In Critical Applied Linguistics, Lydia Catedral, Madina Djuraeva

Teacher Education Faculty Publications

In this paper, we argue that critical applied linguists must work towards the materially transformative, dialogic inclusion of marginalized voices in order to create more just social relations. We show how a spatiotemporal theorization of voice as materially situated and discursively imaginative can enable a more holistic approach to including such voices. Illustrative data come from the experiences of migrant domestic workers in Hong Kong and includes their discourses, those of their employers, and those of domestic worker-led grassroots organizations. We use these data to demonstrate how different stakeholders have unequal abilities to materialize the spatiotemporal imaginaries they voice out, …

Toward A New Approach To Information Science: Intertextuality, Narges Neshat

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Intertextuality is the meaning of the text that is formed by other texts. It means the formation of a new text based on contemporary or previous texts, so that the new text is a compact of a number of texts, the border between which is blurred, and its structure is renewed in a new way, so that nothing is left of the previous texts except its substance, and its essence is in the new text is hidden and only experts can recognize it. No text can be understood on its own without relying on other texts, because it is impossible …

Individual Differences In Adults' Second Language Fluency Development: Motivation And Language Use, Jimin Kahng Oct 2022

Individual Differences In Adults' Second Language Fluency Development: Motivation And Language Use, Jimin Kahng

Faculty and Student Publications

Utterance fluency (UF) in a second language (L2) has been found to be associated with L2 proficiency. Nevertheless, the longitudinal development of UF has been underexamined and its relationship with individual differences such as motivation and L2 use has rarely been investigated simultaneously. The current study investigated L1-Chinese L2-English speakers' changes in UF (speed, pausing, and repair phenomena) before and after 5-month study-abroad and related UF changes to L2 use and motivation. The results showed that participants improved in mean syllable duration and end-clause silent pausing. Individuals' changes in certain UF measures, such as mean syllable duration and mid-clause pause …

Disney Animated Movies, Their Princesses, And Everyone Else, Alia R. Tyner Oct 2022

Disney Animated Movies, Their Princesses, And Everyone Else, Alia R. Tyner

Publications and Research

In April 2021, The Walt Disney Company (Disney) announced the Ultimate Princess Celebration, ‘a year-long event spotlighting the courage and kindness these Disney heroines inspire in fans all around the world’ (Deitchman, 2021). Princesses have remained an important element of Disney’s identity and the movies they create. Broadening research beyond these characters and examining a larger sample demonstrated distinctions in the characteristics present in Official Disney Princess (ODP) movies, Actual Princess (AP) movies, and the 45 in the full catalog (All-Movies) that are or share characteristics with Disney Princess Movies. This article compares the race, class, and gender of the …

Pilot Study Of The Dynamic Early Literacy Framework For Implementation Of Science Of Reading Aligned Instruction, Jaclyn Galbally Ph.D., Nancy Scharff Oct 2022

Pilot Study Of The Dynamic Early Literacy Framework For Implementation Of Science Of Reading Aligned Instruction, Jaclyn Galbally Ph.D., Nancy Scharff

Journal of Inquiry and Action in Education

A growing, research-based consensus supports addressing our nation’s literacy crisis through instruction aligned with the Science of Reading (SoR). We recognize, however, that the complexity of SoR content, alongside the multiplicity of instructional decisions and practices, and the unique features of each classroom and school, make simple implementation designs unlikely to achieve desired results. To guide schools in developing higher levels of SoR-aligned early literacy instruction, we developed the Dynamic Early Literacy Framework (DELF). The DELF primarily serves as a framework to guide inquiry and innovation of SoR-aligned early literacy drivers, while documenting progress as well as identifying change priorities. …
