Decolonizing Assessment: Witnessing, Disrupting, And Reimagining Assessment In Rhetoric, Composition, And Technical Communication, Lisa Schuler Dooley Apr 2023

Decolonizing Assessment: Witnessing, Disrupting, And Reimagining Assessment In Rhetoric, Composition, And Technical Communication, Lisa Schuler Dooley

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is concerned with the context in which assessments are conceptualized and designed, with the implications of assessment for its participants and their communities, and with the institution of assessment—its claims, its values and practices, its relationships to power. With this in mind, in this project I will propose decolonization as a framework through which to: 1) recognize, witness, and address the complicit nature of assessment practices in maintaining “normal;” 2) disrupt and redress the slow violences of assessment in rhetoric, composition, and technical communication studies; 3) reimagine assessment through decolonial methodology, research methods, and assessment pedagogy with the …

Sheltered Instruction For Newcomer Multilingual Learners Through A Multicultural And Assimilation Lens: Administrators, Teachers, And Students’ Perceptions In A Middle-Level Education Setting, Victoria Rae Seelinger Apr 2023

Sheltered Instruction For Newcomer Multilingual Learners Through A Multicultural And Assimilation Lens: Administrators, Teachers, And Students’ Perceptions In A Middle-Level Education Setting, Victoria Rae Seelinger

Theses & Dissertations

Administrators and teachers are tasked with the opportunity to implement bilingual programs to accommodate the growing population of multilingual learners, or MLs. There is a debate in the field about the most appropriate structure for bilingual programs. Sheltered Instruction (SI) is a way to “shelter” MLs from the anxiety of regular academic courses by separating MLs from their native English-speaking peers until they are ready and proficient enough to join mainstream classes. While the SI classroom is beneficial academically, the program’s separate structure, culture, and climate could have negative implications for students’ socialization and sense of belonging. The purpose of …

The What And When Of Psychomotor Retardation: A Multimodal Approach, Ole Edvard Granrud Apr 2023

The What And When Of Psychomotor Retardation: A Multimodal Approach, Ole Edvard Granrud

LSU Master's Theses

Psychomotor retardation (PMR) is a diagnostic criterion that reflects a gross slowing of movement, speech, and thought. More so, PMR is a transdiagnostic, pervasive source of impairment and distress that can be observed across disorders, such as Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), Schizophrenia (SZ), and Bipolar Disorder (BD). In clinical settings, PMR is associated with more severe psychopathology and is used to both inform treatment and predict long-term treatment outcomes. However, despite being clinically meaningful, PMR is poorly understood and is often conceptualized as a motor disturbance that happens in isolation from, rather than concurrently with, higher-order cognitive-emotional processes – such …

Exploring The Interactive, Linguistic, And Conceptual Dimensions Of Parent Input And Their Role In Children's Pragmatic Development, Nickolas T. Day Apr 2023

Exploring The Interactive, Linguistic, And Conceptual Dimensions Of Parent Input And Their Role In Children's Pragmatic Development, Nickolas T. Day

LSU Master's Theses

The development of children’s pragmatic language, which can be defined as conversational competence in social contexts, has been attributed to variation in the language they hear in their environment. When studying the impact language input has on pragmatic development, it is important for clinicians and linguists to measure both the quantity and quality of this language input. Measures of quality, however, are much more relevant when studying the development of pragmatic language, as discussed in Zhang (2020) and Hirsh-Pasek et al. (2015). Rowe and Snow (2016) discussed three dimensions of language quality: interactive, linguistic and conceptual. There is a current …

Gaining Insights Into Signed Music Through Performers, Pamela E. Witcher, Jody Cripps, Hodan Youssouf

Society for American Sign Language Journal

Signed music is best described as an inter-performative art form that combines lyrical and non-lyrical musical performances and is deeply rooted in the culture of deaf people who communicate through signed language (J. H. Cripps & Lyonblum, 2017; J. H. Cripps et al., in press [a]). The key investigative component for this article includes outlining the experiences that three Canadian performers had about their signed music creativity during a plenary at the Partition/Ensemble 2020 Conference held by the Canadian Association for Theatre Research in Montreal, Quebec. The panelists responded to two questions that they developed for themselves: What inspired us …

Trending En Tiktok: El Cambio De Código Como Estrategia Discursiva; Trending On Tiktok: Code-Switching As A Discursive Strategy, Jessica Vrioni

INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference

Tc-Net: A Modest & Lightweight Emotion Recognition System Using Temporal Convolution Network, Muhammad Ishaq, Mustaqeem Khan, Soonil Kwon

Computer Vision Faculty Publications

Speech signals play an essential role in communication and provide an efficient way to exchange information between humans and machines. Speech Emotion Recognition (SER) is one of the critical sources for human evaluation, which is applicable in many real-world applications such as healthcare, call centers, robotics, safety, and virtual reality. This work developed a novel TCN-based emotion recognition system using speech signals through a spatial-temporal convolution network to recognize the speaker's emotional state. The authors designed a Temporal Convolutional Network (TCN) core block to recognize long-term dependencies in speech signals and then feed these temporal cues to a dense network …

Pausing In American English: Documenting Native English Speakers' Pausing Patterns, Ammon Hunt Apr 2023

Pausing In American English: Documenting Native English Speakers' Pausing Patterns, Ammon Hunt

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine more deeply the relationship between pause location and duration and its connection to clause and phrase boundaries for native English speakers (NESs). Previous research has shown pauses produced by NESs to be located at clause boundaries (Brown & Miron, 1971; Hawkins, 1971; Tavakoli, 2011), but little empirical work has been done to probe this issue further. For this research, 80 speech samples, 40 male and 40 female, were randomly selected from the International Dialects of English Archive (IDEA) representing different regions in the United States. Oral data from the read-aloud portion of …

The data analysis process encompassed inductively created codebooks, several rounds of coding, and the inter-rater technique. The findings of the study demonstrated that …

Critical Computation: Mixed-Methods Approaches To Big Language Data Analysis, Josephine Lukito, Meredith L. Pruden Apr 2023

Critical Computation: Mixed-Methods Approaches To Big Language Data Analysis, Josephine Lukito, Meredith L. Pruden

Open Access Publishing Fund Collection

In this theoretical piece, we discuss the limitations of using purely computational techniques to study big language data produced by people online. Instead, we advocate for mixed-method approaches that are able to more critically evaluate and consider the individual and social impact of this data. We propose one approach that combines qualitative, traditional quantitative, and computational methods for the study of language and text. Such approaches leverage the speed and expediency of computational tools while also highlighting the value of qualitative methods in critically assessing the outcome of computational results. In addition to this, we highlight two considerations for communication …

Journey Of Realization And Adaptation Through Auto/Ethnography: A Shift To Transformative Educational Research, Tara Paudel, Bal Chandra Luitel, Niroj Dahal

The Qualitative Report

This reflective paper explores Tara's doctoral research journey of realization and adaptation in auto/ethnography as a transformative research methodology. While reflecting on Tara’s journey, the auto/ethnographic paper emphasizes cultural perspectives, interpreting one's own experiences, thoughts, actions, and behaviors relating to society and culture. Likewise, auto/ethnography investigates and associates an individual's confrontation within specific educational, societal, and cultural contexts. With this ethos, the paper demonstrates how Tara, a mathematics teacher and doctoral student, encountered and observed auto/ethnography and discovered it as a path to transformation as a paradigm shift in transformative educational research by connecting lives and research (Dahal et al., …

Did The Rapid Transition To Online Learning In Response To Covid-19 Protocols Result In Forced Disclosure By Faculty Members With Invisible Disabilities, Charles Edward Ethridge

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In December of 2019, the SARS-CoV-2 virus, now commonly referred to as COVID-19, was first identified in Wuhan, China. The virus proved highly contagious and quickly spread around the globe. By April 7, 2020, Stay-at-Home orders and/or directives regarding the closures of non-essential businesses and schools had been issued throughout the US. While there has been considerable research since 2020 regarding the impact of COVID-19 on higher education, nearly all the research has focused on the effects on students, the economic impact on institutions, and the future landscape of higher education. However, there is little research regarding the effect on …

Phonic Faces As A Method For Improving Decoding For Children With Persistent Decoding Deficits, Chantal H Farag Hanna Apr 2023

Phonic Faces As A Method For Improving Decoding For Children With Persistent Decoding Deficits, Chantal H Farag Hanna

LSU Master's Theses

Background: Decoding is a foundational skill for reading, contributing to both reading fluency and comprehension (Lyon et al., 2003). Visual enhancements of alphabetic letters such as shaping letters to resemble words beginning with that sound (e.g., “f” drawn as a flower) (Handler & Fierson, 2011) and associating photographs of lips producing the sounds (Lindamood & Lindamood, 1998) have been shown to improve decoding skills. This study investigated whether a more direct pictured association using faces with alphabet letters placed in the mouth to cue speech sounds, termed Phonic Faces (Norris,2001), would enable students with persistent decoding impairment to acquire orthographic …

What does it mean to write an awkward or a clear sentence? Who determines what counts as appropriate or "good" writing, and how are such notions of standardized English currently being challenged? Can a scholarly voice be an authentic personal voice, too? In this course, we will examine the grammatical building blocks of written style while scrutinizing larger cultural concerns about the effectiveness of distinct styles. While recognizing famous tenets of style in creative writing, we will primarily focus on stylistic features of academic, civic, and professional discourse. We will learn grammatical terminology and apply it in analyzing and evaluating …

Reading (In) A Quadriform Cosmos:Gospel Books In The Early Christian Bibliographic Imagination, Jeremiah Coogan Apr 2023

Reading (In) A Quadriform Cosmos:Gospel Books In The Early Christian Bibliographic Imagination, Jeremiah Coogan

Jesuit School of Theology

Early Christian thinkers developed the widespread linguistic cosmology of the Roman Mediterranean in a novel way in order to advance a specific bibliographic project: aligning the emergent fourfold Gospel with the structure of the physical cosmos. Employing interlocking concepts from the disciplines of meteorology, geography, music, mathematics, and astronomy, a number of figures—including Irenaeus, Origen, Ephrem, Eusebius, Fortunatianus, Augustine, and Maximus—imagined a Gospel corpus consisting of precisely four texts. Number provided a way to articulate the coherence of the fourfold Gospel—both with itself and with the rest of the world. By situating both familiar and neglected evidence in the context …

Tabular Thinking In Late Ancient Palestine: Instrumentality, Work, And The Construction Of Knowledge, Jeremiah Coogan Apr 2023

Tabular Thinking In Late Ancient Palestine: Instrumentality, Work, And The Construction Of Knowledge, Jeremiah Coogan

Jesuit School of Theology

In late antiquity, a revolution in information technology transformed the practices and possibilities of knowledge. At the cutting edge of this development, several third- and fourth-century figures in Roman Palestine deployed the emerging technology of the column-and-row table as a novel tool of historical and literary scholarship. The Christian scholars Origen and Eusebius and the rabbinic sages of the Palestinian Talmud adapted this specialist technology from grammar and astronomy, and put it to work to structure complex textual corpora. As a “textual machine,” the table generated new possibilities of knowledge. Bringing together literary and material evidence, this study analyses the …
