George Colvile's Translation Of The Consolation Of Philosophy, Ian Cornelius Apr 2023

George Colvile's Translation Of The Consolation Of Philosophy, Ian Cornelius

English: Faculty Publications and Other Works

The Consolatio philosophiae of the Roman statesman and philosopher Boethius (fifth/sixth century) was read and studied intensely in medieval western Europe and repeatedly translated into vernacular languages. Medieval commentaries on this text and translations of it claim attention today as case studies in a history of reading, for they exemplify the practices of medieval literary scholasticism. In an English context, the final flowering of this reading tradition may be placed in the year 1556, when John Cawoode printed a new translation of the Consolatio by a ‘George Coluile, alias Coldewel’. The translator remains unidentified. The translation is a medieval throwback …

Supporting Preservice Teacher Development Of Culturally Responsive Reading Instruction Through A Cross-Course Assignment, Brittany Adams, Annemarie Bazzo Kaczmarczyk

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

This article describes design-based research undertaken by two teacher educators to support elementary preservice teachers (PSTs) in integrating culturally responsive teaching practices with reading methods. The study described was motivated by calls for teacher preparation programs to be more intentional about supporting PSTs in synthesizing their learning across courses, especially when it comes to culturally responsive reading pedagogies. This article focuses on an activity that tasked PSTs to select culturally authentic children’s texts and design interactive read-alouds that engage elementary students in conversations around social justice topics while simultaneously meeting English language arts standards. Analysis of the lesson plans revealed …

Using Online Video Observations And Real Time, Peer Reflective Analysis Of Culturally Responsive Teaching Pedagogy In A University Teacher Preparatory Program For Preservice Teachers, Adrian E. Cortes

Doctor of Education (EdD)

This research aimed to understand the impacts of using online video observations and real-time peer reflection to teach and address culturally responsive teaching in a Pacific Northwest university’s teacher preparatory program. Six active university students enrolled in a university’s new teacher preparatory program (i.e., preservice, new teacher candidates) actively participated in all areas of this study (i.e., nonrandom sampling) and provided both quantitative and qualitative data. Study participants completed self-evaluative pre- and post-surveys in a research group session. Surveys were built using the ready 4 rigor framework (Hammond & Jackson, 2015) and the four areas of culturally responsive teaching as …

The Self And Individualism: An Analysis On The Current Regulations Of Academic Writing, Bonnibel S. H. Walker Apr 2023

The Self And Individualism: An Analysis On The Current Regulations Of Academic Writing, Bonnibel S. H. Walker

WRIT: Journal of First-Year Writing

Individualism, the focus or emphasis on the self, is a highly discussed and debated topic in writing. This is mostly regarding how the self should be addressed and utilized in writing. Although it there is also debate about what the self truly is, and how one can represent it in their work, veering into more abstract thought and theorizing.

The amount of individualism, or the “self” that one is able to, or should imprint onto one’s writing varies widely across numerous genres of academic writing, or even writing in general. For example, in much of scientific writing there’s a broad …

“How Come There’S No Spelling?”: What Spontaneous Comments Teach Us About Student Thinking During Vocabulary Learning Tasks, Susan J. Chambrè Apr 2023

“How Come There’S No Spelling?”: What Spontaneous Comments Teach Us About Student Thinking During Vocabulary Learning Tasks, Susan J. Chambrè

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Vocabulary development remains an active and robust research area, yet little is known about what students, particularly young students, think during vocabulary learning. A commonly held assumption is that young learners employ few, if any, cognitive and metacognitive strategies when engaged in literacy tasks. Conversely, decades of research confirms that older learners with active metacognitive tools are better equipped to make meaning from text, of which vocabulary is a crucial component. To better understand the strategies and metacognitive actions young students make when learning vocabulary, student comments (N = 35) spontaneously produced during two experimental vocabulary learning tasks were reviewed …

Animation Before Anime, Jason Cody Douglass Apr 2023

Animation Before Anime, Jason Cody Douglass

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This dissertation asserts that animated media circulating into, within, and away from Japan during the mid-20th century stand to tell us much about how such texts shaped, and were shaped by, the cultural forces of class, gender, age, and race. The four chapters traverse intersecting, albeit disparate planes. Each uses a distinct critical lens to demonstrate how understudied archival materials can help to resolve some of the most pressing questions currently raised within animation studies. Chapter 1 focuses upon issues of socioeconomic class, forging a vital link between functional animation, such as television advertisements, and working-class animators who developed their …

Meaning And Meaninglessness: The Global Standup Explosion, Adam Valen Levinson Apr 2023

Meaning And Meaninglessness: The Global Standup Explosion, Adam Valen Levinson

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This dissertation investigates the social and cultural significance of the global standup explosion. An unignorable social fact — viewers of more than ten standup specials jumped 60% just between 2018-19, at least half of Netflix users have watched at least one, comedy clubs are their own pandemic — the live comedy phenomenon offers a novel chance to analyze large-scale cultural attitudes and trends. The analysis explores distinct aspects (scales) of humor in three chapters. Chapter One statistically analyzes specific jokes and their reception, surveying whether they are found funny and offensive by respondents. The study reveals that individual reactions to …

The Shape Of Things: Reading Culture Through Form In The Wilhelmine And Weimar Republic, Sophie Duvernoy Apr 2023

The Shape Of Things: Reading Culture Through Form In The Wilhelmine And Weimar Republic, Sophie Duvernoy

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This dissertation explores the historical transformation of the concept of form in Germany between 1850 and 1930 into a dynamic term that intellectually enabled the project of liberal cultural critique. It describes how form was reconceived from a static shaping force with Platonic overtones into a mobile, dynamic means of structuration that allowed for internal difference and change. The dynamization of form allowed it to become a central term in the renewal of epistemology, and in turn, allowed philosophy to move into the study of culture and its material products. The project is based around three key figures – the …

Bootstrapping Fermionic Conformal Field Theories, Rajeev Suchet Erramilli Apr 2023

Bootstrapping Fermionic Conformal Field Theories, Rajeev Suchet Erramilli

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

We present the design, development, and application of new technology for the conformal bootstrap in the context of the study of three-dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs) with fermionic operators, as well as an exploration of the bootstrap of a fermionic gauge CFT. In doing so, we find world-record-precision rigorous bounds on the critical exponents and OPE coefficients of the $O(N)$ Gross-Neveu-Yukawa (GNY) family of CFTs for $N=2,4,8$ as well as significant progress in the bootstrap of Quantum Electrodynamics in 2+1 dimensions (QED$_3$). First, we derive closed-form expressions for all ingredients of the Zamolodchikov-like recursion relation for general spinning conformal blocks …

Philological Botany: The Poetics Of Plant Classification In Early China And Japan, Loren Waller Apr 2023

Philological Botany: The Poetics Of Plant Classification In Early China And Japan, Loren Waller

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Flowering plants are a primary topic in Chinese and Japanese poetry, often used figuratively to express human emotions. Over time, as poets alluded to earlier works, these plants developed conventional metaphorical meanings. It is natural that such meanings would shift over time, but what is also striking is that historical understandings of the plants themselves, as well as the names used for the plants, also changed over time. An examination of three case studies will show how the identities of these plants changed over time as they were collected within literary texts and commentaries. Chapter 1 on the hibiscus (Ch. …

The Making Of Pasolini's Poetic Cinema, Sarah Atkinson Apr 2023

The Making Of Pasolini's Poetic Cinema, Sarah Atkinson

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This dissertation is a study of how Pier Paolo Pasolini pioneered representations of otherness through a new kind of mimesis of the gaze. For the poet-filmmaker, cinema offered a liberating way to represent plural subjectivities through expressive modes that transcend verbal language. Central to his theory of poetic cinema is free indirect discourse, a literary technique wherein a narrator temporarily enters a character’s frame of mind and adopts their distinct point of view. When adapted to film, it becomes a strategy for representing alternative perspectives which allows the audience to experience concrete social difference and highlights nuances that may otherwise …

Sonic Virtuality: Imagining Voices In Late Medieval English Lyric, Melissa Tu Apr 2023

Sonic Virtuality: Imagining Voices In Late Medieval English Lyric, Melissa Tu

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This dissertation explores a textual effect in late medieval English religious poetry, which the project terms “sonic virtuality”: a form of sensory stimulation where instincts of bodily sensation are activated regardless of the performative circumstances under which the poem is encountered. This effect allows the poems to catalyze for their audiences exceptionally vivid imaginative encounters with the poetic personas who appear in them. The project focuses especially on devotional lyrics written, copied, and circulated in medieval England during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, focusing on deictic ambiguities surrounding the lyrics’ uses of the first-person pronoun I. Studies of first-person voices …

The Limits Of Wrongfulness: What Exactly Is Prohibited By Hobbs Act Extortion?, Duncan Weinstein Apr 2023

The Limits Of Wrongfulness: What Exactly Is Prohibited By Hobbs Act Extortion?, Duncan Weinstein

Northwestern Journal of Law & Social Policy

The Hobbs Act, 18 U.S.C. § 1951, prohibits, in interstate commerce, “the obtaining of property from another, with his consent, induced by wrongful use of actual or threatened force, violence, or fear.” This Note addresses what makes an act “wrongful.” First, this Note reviews the academic literature on what makes extortion morally and legally wrong and the Hobbs Act’s legislative history. Then, it argues that there are four distinct types of threats under the Hobbs Act: violent threats, litigation threats, reputational threats, and economic threats. Each of these threats are judged by distinct standards for wrongfulness, with two circuit splits …

Occupational Therapy's Role In Increasing Asl (American Sign Language) Intelligibility In Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Students, Bailey S. Matney Apr 2023

Occupational Therapy's Role In Increasing Asl (American Sign Language) Intelligibility In Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Students, Bailey S. Matney

MOT Student Capstones

Over the years, the occupational therapy profession has worked diligently to provide holistic treatment to all populations throughout the lifespan; however, gaps in practice do exist. One gap that was identified, by this paper's author, involves the Deaf and hard of hearing (D/hh) student population. In American Sign Language (ASL), there are twenty-two different handshapes that make up the twenty-six letters of the alphabet, all of which must be formed through the use of fine motor movements of the wrist, forearm, and digits. In typically developing children, these fine motor movements that ASL production requires are not challenging, but they …

Experiences of Black and Latino Residents During the COVID-19 Response in Missouri centers conversations from focus groups and interviews with Black and Latino Missourians from the St. Louis and Southwest regions during the state’s response to COVID-19. The report examines challenges that Black and Latino Missourians faced during the pandemic and how inequities in response efforts hampered their reach, effectiveness, and further exacerbated the pandemic’s impact on people of color in Missouri. Lessons learned from these conversations provide ways that leaders in public health, health care, social service, and government sectors can create stronger, more equitable systems of care. The …

Implementing A Diabetes Prevention Program At A Community Pharmacy, Monica A. Geiger Msn, Rn Apr 2023

Implementing A Diabetes Prevention Program At A Community Pharmacy, Monica A. Geiger Msn, Rn

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Background: Hispanics are 70% more likely to be diagnosed with diabetes and twice as likely to experience complications related to this disease than non-Hispanic whites (CDC, 2021). Currently there is consistent evidence supporting that community-based educational initiatives called cultural and linguistically appropriate services (CLAS) have a significant impact on Body Mass Index (BMI) in Hispanic populations. The CLAS standards are intended to advance health equity, improve quality, and help eliminate health care disparities. Yet, CLAS has not been implemented in some areas in Dallas, Texas.

Purpose: To implement a community-based educational program based on CLAS to increase participants’ knowledge regarding …
