Toward Self-Explanation Based Intelligent Tutoring System, Lasang Jimba Tamang Apr 2023

Toward Self-Explanation Based Intelligent Tutoring System, Lasang Jimba Tamang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Studies have shown that 30–40% of students fail or drop out of the introductory programming course. Furthermore, enrollment in CS programs has lately shown a significant increase, making it difficult to provide personalized attention. In this context, the work in this dissertation is an effort toward developing Self-Explanation Based Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS) for Code Comprehension, which offers one-to-one tutoring to enhance learners' source code comprehension skills. Self-Explanation Based ITS uses self-explanation as a learning strategy. Although self-explanation has shown a positive effect in different science domains such as biology, and math, it has been studied minimally for code comprehension; …

The Effects Of Classroom Type On Anxiety, Motivation, Interaction, And Vocabulary Development In A Novice Level Tblt Course For Young Learners, Hannah Pitner Apr 2023

The Effects Of Classroom Type On Anxiety, Motivation, Interaction, And Vocabulary Development In A Novice Level Tblt Course For Young Learners, Hannah Pitner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Relatively little research has considered how tasks are performed and experienced by students in different types of classrooms. Research shows that innovative classroom designs can lead to higher levels of cognitive engagement, connections between form and meaning, and more diverse forms of input (Schmidt, 1990; Svalberg, 2012) and are particulary beneficial for young learners (Nunan 2013). While significant research has explored TBLT, very little has looked at its effectiveness with young learners, particularly in the foreign language classroom. (Butler & Zeng 2014, Ellis 2020). The present quasi experimental mixed methods study examines the effects of the classroom setting on interaction …

Multi-Modal Knowledge Graph Inference Via Media Convergence And Logic Rule, Feng Lin, Dongmei Li, Wenbin Zhang, Dongsheng Shi, Yuanzhou Jiao, Qianzhong Chen, Yiying Lin, Wentao Zhu Apr 2023

Multi-Modal Knowledge Graph Inference Via Media Convergence And Logic Rule, Feng Lin, Dongmei Li, Wenbin Zhang, Dongsheng Shi, Yuanzhou Jiao, Qianzhong Chen, Yiying Lin, Wentao Zhu

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

Media convergence works by processing information from different modalities and applying them to different domains. It is difficult for the conventional knowledge graph to utilise multi-media features because the introduction of a large amount of information from other modalities reduces the effectiveness of representation learning and makes knowledge graph inference less effective. To address the issue, an inference method based on Media Convergence and Rule-guided Joint Inference model (MCRJI) has been proposed. The authors not only converge multi-media features of entities but also introduce logic rules to improve the accuracy and interpretability of link prediction. First, a multi-headed self-attention approach …

A Content Analysis Of A Black Plus-Size Woman And Social Media Influencer Making Policy Change: Through The Lens Of Instagram, Tamika Nicole Johnson

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This study examines how a Black plus-size woman social media influencer, @CurvyNyome, encounters censorship, dehumanization, sexualization, and body-shaming on Instagram. Social media, such as Instagram, have formed communication channels and opened avenues for people to be expressive, positive, hostile, or indifferent. The long history of the sexualization and dehumanization of Black women is rooted in centuries of oppression, which led the recipients of oppression to inadvertently adopt dehumanizing beliefs and behaviors (Burnette et al., 2017). The study’s significance is that Black plus-size women are often made to believe and feel that their body is not beautiful. Black women have struggled …

Language Modeling Using Image Representations Of Natural Language, Seong Eun Cho Apr 2023

Language Modeling Using Image Representations Of Natural Language, Seong Eun Cho

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents training of an end-to-end autoencoder model using the transformer, with an encoder that can encode sentences into fixed-length latent vectors and a decoder that can reconstruct the sentences using image representations. Encoding and decoding sentences to and from these image representations are central to the model design. This method allows new sentences to be generated by traversing the Euclidean space, which makes vector arithmetic possible using sentences. Machines excel in dealing with concrete numbers and calculations, but do not possess an innate infrastructure designed to help them understand abstract concepts like natural language. In order for a …

Transition To Higher Education In A College Assistance Migrant Program: Students’ Perception Of Purpose, Mark R. Lane-Holbert

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The 21st century world is increasingly globalized and interconnected, and migration is a reality that substantially impacts the US educational system, and often requires specialized services for migrant students to successfully transition to higher education. While higher education has many benefits, it also presents inherent risks and challenges for students from migrant families, whose academic and life experiences may be vastly different from traditional college students. Federal collegiate transition programs like the College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP) recognize this and aim to support students holistically throughout their transition to higher education. Such programs are in continual search of effective ways …

In Knowledge We Trust(Ed): A Case Study In Abolition Theatre, Misty Dawn Saribal Apr 2023

In Knowledge We Trust(Ed): A Case Study In Abolition Theatre, Misty Dawn Saribal

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation argues for performance art’s role(s) in growing abolition on higher education campuses. After defining abolition’s intersections with higher education, and discussing why performance is often diminished and overlooked, I examine a university abolitionist performance I co-directed that highlighted prison labor on our university’s campus titled ‘In Knowledge We Trusted: Red Tape, White Institutions, and Blue Students.’ A rationale for abolition performance and an abolition performance praxis is detailed with attention to avoiding the pitfalls of authenticity policing in prison abolition and genre policing in abolitionist art. Conclusions about how the performance contributed to and embodied abolition politics and …

Influence Of Parental Voice Across Modalities In The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Brooke Gallo, Preye Ford Apr 2023

Influence Of Parental Voice Across Modalities In The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Brooke Gallo, Preye Ford

Undergraduate Student Symposium

Premature infants are at risk for developing delays including impaired social language, linguistics, and cognitive competencies compared to infants who were born full term. This is primarily due to necessary medical and environmental factors. Premature infants can experience long periods of early separation from their parents and exposed to unnatural noxious auditory stimuli ( i.e. machine alarms). The purpose of this scoping review of the literature, is to determine if early consistent exposure to the parental voice in any communication capacity, including reading, singing, or speaking tasks, decease developmental delays in infants.

Scoping review revealed that early exposure to parental …
