Menetekel: Ishmael's Black Whale And The Semiotics Of Doom, Todd Tyner Cronkhite Apr 2023

Menetekel: Ishmael's Black Whale And The Semiotics Of Doom, Todd Tyner Cronkhite

English Language and Literature ETDs

This study employs the narrator of Moby Dick, Ishmael, as a focal critic to interpret several potential examples of ominous writing on the wall, or menetekel. It concludes that the message of such writing, owing primarily to its irrevocably deictic relationship with the surface it is written on, is fundamentally apocalyptic in nature, regardless of its explicit content. The physical walls of the “kingdom” are incorporated into the grammar of the menetekel as object, so that its elemental message, “I was here,” becomes not only an admission of criminal trespass, but also a direct threat to the current order and …

An Assessment Of Kashmir And Linguistic Plurality In South Asia, Tess Yazvac

Undergraduate Research Competition

Kashmir is the northernmost region of India that has been under territorial dispute for centuries. In recent years, China, India, and Pakistan have all claimed to have control of a certain domain of this region. Before and after India gained its independence from British rule, fighting has ensued over which nation claims dominance over Kashmir. Out of this conflict, Kashmir became an epicenter where multiple ancient languages have joined and produced variations around the region. This research explores the linguistic importance of Kashmir by studying its religious personality and its different writing systems and vocabulary. According to a 2011 religious’ …

Delayed Autism Diagnosis In Girls Due To Social Masking, Madeline Abram-Moyle

Student Research Symposium

Objective: To determine if camouflaging social and linguistic skills delays autism diagnosis in girls ages 6-18 years old compared to boys of the same age.

Methods: A rapid review from PubMed database to review relevant evidence.

Results: Evidence that social and linguistic camouflaging lead to delayed diagnosis in autistic girls compared to autistic boys is strong, but evidence is lacking that these forms of camouflaging lead to poor mental health in autistic girls ages 6-18.

Conclusion: Diagnostic criteria for autism should be updated to include female behavior and language patterns.

Educational Accountability And Equity: Superintendent Perspectives, John Decman, Jennier Grace, Felix Simieou Iii, Queinnise Miller Apr 2023

Educational Accountability And Equity: Superintendent Perspectives, John Decman, Jennier Grace, Felix Simieou Iii, Queinnise Miller

School Leadership Review

Educational equity is understood as the recognition of a school system to ensure resources to safeguard that all students have equitable access, opportunity, and outcomes (Galloway & Ishimaru, 2015). Yet inequity persists in the American educational system. School accountability remains at the forefront of education policy to ensure equitable achievement between students from all backgrounds regardless of race, ethnicity, family income, linguistic background, and ability (Krejsler, 2018; Skrla, 2001). This article reflects a qualitative approach to understanding public school superintendent voices regarding experiences, feelings, and beliefs related to our ongoing era of accountability in a changing social environment.

This study …

"The Road Less Traveled: Why Black Males Choose Alternative Routes That Lead To Education", Felix Simieou Iii, Queinnise Miller, Jennier Grace, John Decman

School Leadership Review

This study uses critical race theory and qualitative interviews to understand the perspectives of 10 Black males that have entered the field of education through non-traditional routes. It seeks to highlight the rationale for not choosing education as a first option, what eventually led them into the field, and finally how educational leaders might better recruit. As the field continues to evolve with demographics still heavily favoring women, decision makers in school districts, universities, and alternative certification programs need to understand the best methods to recruit and retain Black males in education. The findings of this research will benefit these …

Creando La Confianza: Narratives On Mentorship Of Latina Professors At The University Of New Mexico, Maria G. Vielma Apr 2023

Creando La Confianza: Narratives On Mentorship Of Latina Professors At The University Of New Mexico, Maria G. Vielma

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

Numerous scholars have investigated the significant role that representation and mentorship play in the success of Latinas and other women of color during their journey through higher education, from degree completion to faculty hiring and advancement (Vasquez 1982, Zambrana et. al. 1997, Valdez 2001, Cavazos & Cavazos 2010, Shayne 2020, Contreras et. al. 2022). However, little research exists surrounding the lived experiences that have shaped mentorship carried out by university faculty, specifically, mentorship carried out by bilingual Latina faculty in higher education. Through a Latina Feminist Epistemology implementing Oral History Methodologies, this thesis aims to understand the cycle of mentorship …

Translingual Pedagogy In The First-Year Composition Classroom: An Examination Of Divergent Student Uptake, Ashton Taylor Myerscough Apr 2023

Translingual Pedagogy In The First-Year Composition Classroom: An Examination Of Divergent Student Uptake, Ashton Taylor Myerscough

Theses and Dissertations

117 PagesWhat impact can translingual pedagogy have in introductory composition classes? This thesis describes how first-year composition (FYC) students at a Primarily White Institution (PWI) participated in complicated, divergent uptake as they learned about terms such as translingualism, translation, and Global Englishes in the Fall of 2022. The research for this project was guided by the following questions. 1. In what ways were students understanding, resisting, or engaging with ideas such as Global Englishes, translingualism, and translation? When did moments of “discursive turbulence” occur in student uptake, and what was the result of that turbulence? (Ware and Zilles) 2. How …

Music Training And Cognitive Function, Madilyn Waters, Michiko Nohara-Leclair Apr 2023

Music Training And Cognitive Function, Madilyn Waters, Michiko Nohara-Leclair

2023 Student Academic Showcase

Music training is defined as the instruction on a musical instrument, and it requires the simultaneous use of several cognitive functions: perception, memory, attention, and learning, in particular. I set out to determine if any associations exist between music training and increased cognitive function. After extensive research on various topics, I discovered that there are several significant associations between cognition and music training. Dementia, as well as other cognitive impairments, were shown to occur less in individuals that participated in music training. Attention, working memory, and intelligence showed significant positive associations with music training. Also, music training can also be …

The Impact Of Prc Language Policies On Minority Languages Of China, Margaret Shoop Apr 2023

The Impact Of Prc Language Policies On Minority Languages Of China, Margaret Shoop

Undergraduate Research Competition

While language is often used as a tool to bring people together and celebrate differences, language can also be weaponized and used to suppress minority groups of people. There are over three hundred unique languages and dialects spoken in Mainland China, with Mandarin Chinese being the most widely spoken of the languages. Mandarin is the official state language of the People’s Republic of China (PRC), and it is also the primary language taught in schools across the country. Despite official Chinese policy of teaching Mandarin Chinese alongside local dialects, Mandarin is favored over minority languages. The unequal emphasis on Mandarin …

I Am Not A White Man In A Labcoat: The Normalization Of Identity In Academic Writing, Raina Freeman Apr 2023

I Am Not A White Man In A Labcoat: The Normalization Of Identity In Academic Writing, Raina Freeman

Student Work

One deep-seated belief in writing, especially writing instruction, is that there is no place for identity and personal pronouns in pieces that are professional and academic. Students are taught this principle as early as elementary school. However, identity can be used in academic writing as a tool to emphasize credibility on certain topics and can shape writing, whether intentionally or not. Anyone’s writing can benefit from a bit of the author’s perspective, but there is an even deeper need for a diverse range of identities in academia. I intend to discuss how ‘objective’ papers are often read as if written …

The Language Of Lgbt Asylum Discrimination: In A Globalized Age, Sophie Watkins Apr 2023

The Language Of Lgbt Asylum Discrimination: In A Globalized Age, Sophie Watkins

Student Work

Transgender asylum seekers, escaping countries that would otherwise sentence them to death for their gender expression, are forced to express traits to prove their gender identity to asylum officials in order to attain relative safety. Anti-homosexual laws exist in over 70 countries, a majority of the concentration of these laws are in Africa and west Asia (ilga.org). South Africa exists as a bit of a gay haven in the sense that there are constitutional protections for LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) people and, according to ILGA (The International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association), the only country in Africa …

Resampling Generative Models: An Empirical Study, Prachi Ramesh Jadhav Apr 2023

Resampling Generative Models: An Empirical Study, Prachi Ramesh Jadhav

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Despite Generative AI’s rapid growth (e.g., ChatGPT, GPT-4, Dalle-2, etc.), generated data from these models may have an inherent bias. This bias can propagate to downstream tasks e.g., classification, and data augmentation that utilize data from generative AI models. This thesis empirically evaluates model bias in different deep generative models like Variational Autoencoder and PixelCNN++. Further, we resample generated data using importance sampling to reduce bias in the generated images based on a recently proposed method for bias-reduction using probabilistic classifiers. The approach is developed in the context of image generation and we demonstrate that importance sampling can produce better …

Environment and Society Student Research

This paper outlines a proposal, based on Blackfoot worldview, for a collective method to stand alongside Western qualitative and quantitative methods and highlights the value of collective methods in collaborative social-ecological research. Neither qualitative nor quantitative methods are adequate to disclose a world where all things are alive, where “objects” are subjects—agentive beings in their own right. Most Indigenous cultures understand and experience the world as a network of living beings, a collective, with whom they are interrelated/connected and therefore, any efforts to collaborate with Indigenous peoples must acknowledge comprehensive relational animacy. Applying coproduction principles in concert with Blackfoot ways …

Neutrosophic Marcos In Decision Making On Smart Manufacturing System, Nivetha Martin, Said Broumi, S. Sudha, R. Priya

Neutrosophic Systems with Applications

Business firms prefer software-based smart manufacturing systems to monitor and supervise all production activities in a decentralized manner. The choice of software decides the degree of manufacturing robustness. This paper proposes a neutrosophic-based MARCOS (Measurement of Alternatives and Ranking according to COmpromise Solution) method of MCDM with single-valued triangular neutrosophic numbers to solve the software selection problem. The proposed neutrosophic method is applied to hypothetical data to test the efficacy of the method. The results obtained using the proposed method are compared with crisp, fuzzy, and intuitionistic data representations, and suitable inferences are acquired. The proposed method has several industrial …

Inside The Hirak: The Dynamics Of A Mass Movement For Social Justice And Human Rights, Abdelkader Berrahmoun

International Journal of Human Rights Education

In 2019, Algeria witnessed the emergence of the Hirak mass movement: a pro-democracy uprising marked by epic nationwide demonstrations and trans-formative public dialogue. Hundreds of thousands of Algerians mobilized to protest social injustices and political corruption, educate each other about their common rights, and articulate their collective goals. Through the Hirak’s shared platform, people from all walks of life took to the podium to galvanize the masses through ideas and action. The Algerian Hirak was a form of public pedagogy; a grassroots expression of human rights education. Why is the Hirak so important in the history of global social movements? …

Zapatista Seed Pedagogics: Beyond Rights, Creating A Decolonizing Co-Education, Charlotte María Saenz Apr 2023

Zapatista Seed Pedagogics: Beyond Rights, Creating A Decolonizing Co-Education, Charlotte María Saenz

International Journal of Human Rights Education

This article inquires into a pedagogics that seeds a larger co-educational process outside of the Zapatista movement’s autonomous territories. A Zapatista Seed Pedagogics (ZSP) is theorized as an educational, political, and ethical process that confronts oppressive power relations at all levels, growing a collective political and educational subject. While still asserting the need for Indigenous rights within a neocolonial context, a ZSP transcends a human rights education framework to insist on the inherent value of all beings and their birthright to a dignified life. Drawing on a qualitative transgeographic study conducted through interviews with pro-Zapatista interlocutors who are themselves involved …

The Intersection Of Culturally Responsive Pedagogy And Engineering Design In Secondary Stem, Mariam Manuel, Jessica Gottlieb, Gina Svarovsky, Rebecca Hite Apr 2023

The Intersection Of Culturally Responsive Pedagogy And Engineering Design In Secondary Stem, Mariam Manuel, Jessica Gottlieb, Gina Svarovsky, Rebecca Hite

Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)

The instructional practices of the engineering design process and culturally responsive pedagogy have each garnered national attention and multiple decades of research. Findings from the respective literature bases call for educators and policymakers to integrate these two pedagogical approaches into K-12 classroom instruction. Scholars have argued that this integration would improve student engagement and academic achievement. There is a significant amount of research that supports the positive student outcomes associated with each approach, yet there remains a dearth of literature that addresses the integration of these two practices into the science and mathematics content areas. The movement around educational reform …

Agricultural Literacy And Food Production In Nigeria, Tor-Akwer Helen Famaren, Dominic Aondohemba Ihongo, Comfort Member Tyopev

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

There are growing concerns relating to current Nigerian agricultural food production practices and its impact on human nutrition. There is mounting evince that our current food system is responsible for diseases such as diabetes and obesity. Agricultural literacy is possessing knowledge and understanding of our food and fiber system. For citizens to be minimally educated about agricultural practices, agricultural literacy is important for both the individual and for the industries. An individual must be well informed to make responsible choices in matters of food and fiber. Improving agricultural literacy by understanding the needs of the society, as it relates to …

Expanding Carceral Frontiers: The 100-Mile Border Zone And Constituting Latinx Political Subjectivity, Elyse Y. Hatch-Rivera Apr 2023

Expanding Carceral Frontiers: The 100-Mile Border Zone And Constituting Latinx Political Subjectivity, Elyse Y. Hatch-Rivera

Political Science Honors Projects

The thesis has two interrelated concerns. The first explores the emergence of the 100-mile border zone in order to study how the U.S. has expanded its borders inward and redefined notions of national security and carcerality. The second will define the 100-mile border as a carceral frontier that has emerged from previous years of racial security operations such as “Operation Wetback” in 1953. Moreover, I will demonstrate how the 100-mile border zone, a carceral frontier, blends the logic of security and the carceral in order to create a space of total state control. This inward turn of the 100-mile border …

While It's Still Morning, Cosenza Marie Hendrickson

Theses and Dissertations

While It's Still Morning is a collection of lyric poems exploring themes of love, gratitude, and praise. The critical essay introducing the collection discusses possible pitfalls of this genre of poetry and how I've sought to avoid them. It also details qualities often present in my favorite poems (surprise, particularity, strangeness, tension, attention, allusion) and ways in which I've striven to create these qualities in my own poetry.

A Language-Model-Based Chatbot That Considers The User's Personality Profile And Emotions To Support Caregivers Of People With Dementia, Yeganeh Nasiri

Theses and Dissertations

Chatbots are programs that mimic human conversation using Artificial Intelligence (AI). Recent advances in natural language pro- cessing pave the way for chatbots to generate more human-like responses. Therefore, chatbots are finding more complex tasks to perform, such as emotional support which requires both understanding emotions and the ability to properly respond to them. This work presents a chatbot capable of identifying the user's personality and creating responses based on that. During this process, emotion detection is being used to detect and react to users' emotions. The chatbot uses a dynamic knowledge graph to save information as the conversation goes …
