The Spiritual Well‑Being Scale In The Polish Catholic Setting: Construct, Structure, And Relationships With Psychological Well‑Being, Beata Zarzycka, Kamil Tomaka, Michał Grupa, Raymond F. Paloutzian, Rodger K. Bufford

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

The population of Poland could be of particular interest to researchers studying religion and spirituality. Catholicism has played a significant role in shaping the country’s culture, history, and tradition and is considered a national religion. More recently, however, the processes of moving away from regular participation in religious services and loosening ties with the institution of the Catholic Church are marked (Polish Public Opinion Research Center, CBOS). The Polish Catholic setting may modify the associations between psychological variables that have been studied in their relationships with spirituality, which have been investigated in religious contexts differing from a Polish Catholic one. …

Black People’S Reasons For Becoming Professional Counselors: A Grounded Theory, Michael D. Hannon, Lashawn M. Adams, Natalie Nieves, Estefanie Ceballo, David Julius Ford, Jr., Linwood G. Vereen

Department of Counseling Scholarship and Creative Works

Drawing from the concepts of Critical Race Theory and the Theory of Nigrescence, we report the results of a grounded theory study to explain why a sample of 28 Black counselors chose their profession. Findings suggest that the contributors to this study were motivated to become counselors because of their inspiration to challenge cultural mandates (i.e., grounding motivator), to disrupt Black underrepresentation (i.e., secondary motivator), and to live out their personal and professional convictions (i.e., secondary motivator). Recommendations for counselor education, counseling practice, and counseling research are included.

The Stepped Care Model: A Flexible, Integrative, Transdiagnostic Approach To Counseling, Justin Jacques, Nick R. Abel

Scholarship and Professional Work – Education

The stepped care model (SCM) is a healthcare approach in which patients and providers collaborate to select interventions and adjust the level of care over time based on outcomes. The approach is widely used in primary healthcare and becoming increasingly prevalent in busy mental health settings such as community clinics and university counseling centers. This manuscript provides a brief overview of SCM, its utility in counseling, and some core features of the approach including an emphasis on client readiness for change, common factors in counseling outcomes, an integrative or eclectic approach to treatment, and a transdiagnostic understanding of mental health …

The Influence Of Organizational Culture On Mission Drift In A Christian University, Mark Reddy Oct 2024

The Influence Of Organizational Culture On Mission Drift In A Christian University, Mark Reddy

PhD in Organizational Leadership

This study addressed a critical gap in the literature by investigating the relationship between organizational culture and mission drift within Christian higher education. While mission drift has been widely discussed in popular press, limited academic research has explored the factors influencing it, particularly organizational culture. Utilizing the Denison Organizational Culture Survey (DOCS) and the Mission Drift Survey, this study evaluated how culture influences mission clarity and safeguards against mission drift in a Christian university. Findings reveal that consistency and mission from the DOCS are strong predictors of mission clarity, with both showing statistical significance (p < .001). In addition, the DOCS elements predicted safeguards against mission drift through consistency and mission at the significance level of p < .05. The study’s results highlight the importance of consistency and mission in combating mission drift, offering Christian higher education institutions practical insights for reinforcing their foundational goals. Additionally, the research contributed to validating the Mission Drift Survey in an academic context, broadening its potential application beyond business and into higher education sectors. This topic is growing, and further research is needed to expand on these findings and explore additional organizational cultural factors.

Finding The Thinkable Thoughts, Beth H. Wilensky Oct 2024

Finding The Thinkable Thoughts, Beth H. Wilensky

Reviews

When John B. West developed his legal classification system in the 1880s, he likely didn’t anticipate that his system of indexing the law would persist into the twenty-first century. But persist it has, and flourished, most prominently in the form of Westlaw’s headnote and key number system. West’s index built on several precursors, but it was his version, West’s American Digest, that established the foundations of the classification system that most modern legal researchers use today, in one form or another.

This history—of the late-nineteenth-century fascination with indexing—and much more is told in charming detail in Dennis Duncan’s Index, A …

The Process Before The Promise: Ensuring Indigenous Recognition From The Chilean Constitution, Michaela Mazzeo Oct 2024

The Process Before The Promise: Ensuring Indigenous Recognition From The Chilean Constitution, Michaela Mazzeo

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

Part I of this Note provides a background and overview of the relatively recent surge in the constitutionalization of indigenous rights and recognition in Latin America, and the state of constitutional reform in Chile. Part II lays out a theoretical understanding of the powers of a constitution as a mechanism for societal reformation and as a platform for bringing legal claims, as played out in Brazil and Bolivia. Part III demonstrates the ways in which practical manifestation of that theoretical power stops short. More specifically, both intentional and incidental barriers dampen the effectiveness of the constitutional mechanism for ensuring indigenous …

Following The Wounded Women In Isabela, Kaisa Aquino Oct 2024

Following The Wounded Women In Isabela, Kaisa Aquino

Fine Arts Department Faculty Publications

This article examines some elements in the crafting of my novel, Isabela (2024), particularly its novelistic formation, and its take on the emblematic figure of the wounded woman in war. I demonstrate what non-conventional stylistic and conceptual decisions give the story its syncretic mode of thought, as its trail shifts from city to barrio, one category of fiction to another, and one wounded woman to the next. I also argue that all these movements and turns are necessary in the novel’s project of representation, as it envisions to narrativize the ongoing historical moment that is the people’s struggle for liberation …

Dogs As Proxies For Forager-Farmer Interactions Along The Missouri River, North And South Dakota, Abigail Fisher Oct 2024

Dogs As Proxies For Forager-Farmer Interactions Along The Missouri River, North And South Dakota, Abigail Fisher

Anthropology Theses and Dissertations

This research explores the interaction between hunter-gatherer and farmer populations through time on the northern Great Plains of North American, a frontier both in the past and today. Here, the first introduction of farming products, specifically corn, can be tracked archaeologically, by mapping changes in the presence of maize in the diet of dogs recovered from human settlements. Dog diets are used in this study as a proxy for maize availability following the assumption that domesticated canines consume foods like their owners, be it by direct provisioning or scavenging. Of specific interest is the strategies Indigenous foraging populations employed after …

“I Want To Give Back": Examining The Mestiza Consciousness Of Multilingual Rural Latinx Students From California’S San Joaquin Valley, Mayra Puente

The Rural Educator

In 2016, California residents widely supported the passage of Proposition 58, which allowed non-English languages to be used in public education. This proposition was intended to benefit all students, especially the state’s large Latinx K–12 student population, who tend to speak Spanish and English at home and in school. Yet educational resources to support multilingual students in the state’s rural areas are scarce, and students consequently experience “English-only” learning spaces despite progressive educational policy. This article examines the educational experiences of multilingual rural Latinx students from California’s San Joaquin Valley agricultural region using Chicana/Latina feminist pláticas methodology. Drawing on Anzaldúa’s …

Escuchemos Las Voces Bilingües De Nuestros Educadores Rurales: Who And What Matters For The Education Of Secondary English Learners In A Rural Florida School Community, Nidza V. Marichal

The Rural Educator

Guided by constructive epistemology and grounded in Greenwood’s place-conscious education theory and critical race theory in education, (CRT), this narrative-informed qualitative study critically examines how the lived experiences of three bilingual educators shape their work with English Learners (ELs or multilingual learners, MLs) in a Florida rural school community. Primary data consist of videorecorded interviews and photo elicitation that illuminated teachers’ told life narratives. Findings from this study demonstrate that the voices of the bilingual teachers matter for improving EL education in this rural community. The teachers’ reflections about their “ontological-becoming,” their engagement with the rural school community, and the …

Multilingual Educators In Superdiverse Rural Schools: Placing Administrators And Teachers’ Cultural And Linguistic Wealth At The Center Of Rural Education, Carla Paciotto, Gloria A. Delany-Barmann

The Rural Educator

Centered on reconceptualizations of “rural” and “rurality” that reimagine and transcend the “traditional imaginaries” of rural educational settings as places of disadvantage and isolation, this article presents the partial results of a mixed methods study funded by the Spencer Foundation about expanded and pivotal roles played by rural multilingual (ML) teachers, paraprofessionals, and administrators in two rural school districts located in U.S. Midwest COVID-19 hotspots. The pandemic made the historical struggles and inequities that ML students face in U.S. schools glaringly evident, as ML families experienced a disproportionately negative impact of the virus on their health and financial stability and …

The Impact Of Historical Trauma And Political Conflict On Mental Health In Sub-Saharan Africa: A Case Study Of The Drc And Rwanda, Aurore Shima

Switzerland: Global Health and Development Policy

Defined as an individual’s emotional, psychological, and social well-being, mental health is essential for personal recovery and societal stability, especially in post-conflict settings. In regions like Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where communities have endured extreme political violence, the scars of historical trauma remain deep. While various literature exists on the psychological effects of political conflict, few studies have been conducted in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), and the impact of historical trauma on mental health outcomes in this region remains sparse. This research explores the psychological effects of historical trauma stemming from political conflict in Rwanda and the …

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

This case study investigates the use of Large Language Models (LLMs) and prompt engineering techniques for data augmentation,in the context of post-trial inter- view data (low-resource natural language data) from a randomized clinical trial on Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT) for chronic back pain. The limited sample size from the original study necessitates the generation of synthetic interview samples, needed to draw meaningful inferences from the data and to further extend the study. This study explores the efficacy of various prompting techniques in different approaches such as sentiment inversion and personality-based augmentation. The goal is to elicit desired responses from LLMs …
