The Effectiveness Of Aleks To Address Grade 8 Students’ Math Deficiencies, Joseph Evans
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The math intervention program, Assessment and Learning in Knowledge Spaces (ALEKS), at a Public Middle School (pseudonym) in the Northeast United States, was implemented for eighth grade middle school math students, but researchers have not measured its effectiveness. Grounded in the cultural relevance pedagogy, the purpose of this quantitative quasi-experimental study was to determine the efficacy of ALEKS intervention for eighth grade students in improving their smarter balanced assessment consortium (SBAC) mathematics scores. The research question focused on the ALEKS intervention program effects on eighth grade math scores at the study site. An independent samples t-test revealed that the SBAC …

Every individual has a fundamental right to communicate and access equal opportunities to fully participate in society. However, this right may not be fully manifested for individuals with communication access needs especially those from underrepresented groups. This project had two aims, to determine 1) the specific experiences, challenges, and aspirations related to the cultural identities of people of color (POC) who use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) and 2) how AAC service providers and manufacturers can support POC AAC users in a culturally and linguistically responsive manner. We conducted an online, asynchronous focus group with seven participants over eight weeks. …
A Brief Consideration Of The Sacrament Of Marriage: From A Catholic Perspective For Pentecostal Christians, Walter F. Kedjierski
A Brief Consideration Of The Sacrament Of Marriage: From A Catholic Perspective For Pentecostal Christians, Walter F. Kedjierski
Spiritus: ORU Journal of Theology
In this article Kedjierski attempts to highlight areas of convergence between Pentecostal and Catholic understandings of the covenant of marriage while at the same time explicating the divergences of their respective theologies of marriage. He begins with a personal testimony as to why it is important, particularly for Pentecostals and other Christians, to understand why the ritual associated with marriage is important to Catholics. Then he proceeds to explain the Catholic view of marriage as a sacrament that could be intelligible to Pentecostal audiences, including the place of the Holy Spirit in the ritual and living out of marriage. Subsequent …

Methodology: The researcher employed the inductive, analytical, and critical methods in this analysis. Results: One of the findings reached is that Shahrour's method of dividing the Quran into miraculous and non-miraculous is an innovative approach that distorts the …
Applicative Recursion And Nominal Licensing, Yining Nie
Applicative Recursion And Nominal Licensing, Yining Nie
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Languages with applicative morphology vary in whether their applied arguments can stack, or “recurse.” Focusing primarily on Bantu languages, I argue that the availability of applicative recursion in a given language depends on abstract nominal licensing ⎯in particular, on whether the applicative heads responsible for introducing applied arguments are nominal licensers. Applicative recursion therefore provides a novel diagnostic for the presence of abstract nominal licensing, which is argued to be driven not by Case but by ϕ-feature checking. The proposed approach to applicative recursion provides evidence for the role of abstract licensing in Bantu languages and has implications for approaches …

Enraptured By Rapture: Production Context, Biblical Interpretation, And Evangelical Eschatology In The Rapture, Left Behind, And This Is The End, Robert G. Joseph, Laura M. Tringali, Meghan R. Henning
Journal of Religion & Film
The Book of Revelation's place in the popular imaginary has been fueled by both its popularity within evangelical eschatology and its endless evocations within mainstream film and TV. Both evangelicalism and popular culture frequently equate the events of John’s Apocalypse with the rapture, a selective reading of New Testament verses which envisions God’s faithful being called to heaven in advance of the Tribulation. This paper analyzes three distinct films which mediate on both the rapture and Revelation: The Rapture (1991), Left Behind: The Movie (2000), and This is the End (2013). Analyzing these films within their respective modes of production …

Lecture Iii: The Origin Of The Books Of The Old Testament, Part 1, Earl Clement Davis
Lectures on the Origin and History of the Bible
Lecture III, "The Origin of the Books of the Old Testament, Part 1," discusses the scholarly efforts, known in 1916 as "higher criticism," that bring careful historical and linguistic analysis to the study of biblical texts. Davis illustrates that text clearly shows that the Old Testament cannot be simply the received word of God because of various problems, including the idea that Moses could describe his own death, double accounts of creation and of the flood.

The Provenance Of A Pali- And Thai-Language Manuscript At The Rollins College Library: A Buddhist Book Of Merit And Its Long Journey From Southeast Asia To America, Wenxian Zhang
Faculty Publications
Through researching the provenance of a Buddhist manuscript written in the Pali and Thai languages currently held at Rollins, this article seeks to answer the question of how a religious document created in Thailand ended up in a liberal arts college library in America. Regarded as an act of devotion by many Buddhist followers in Southeast Asia, the use of folding manuscripts (samut khoi) has been observed for centuries. The folding manuscripts served as handbooks and chanting manuals for Buddhist monks, who often recited in religious ceremonies while paying tributes to the deceased, with the hope of reincarnation in a …

Regional Integration And Social Cohesion In Africa: The Roles Of Multilevel Development Initiatives, Lillian Smith
Regional Integration And Social Cohesion In Africa: The Roles Of Multilevel Development Initiatives, Lillian Smith
Switzerland: International Studies and Multilateral Diplomacy
This study examines the interplay between regional integration and social cohesion in Africa, highlighting the roles of intergovernmental organizations (IGOs), specifically the African Union (AU) and the United Nations (UN). Using the New Regionalism Approach (NRA) as a theoretical framework, the paper explores how the AU and UN, through initiatives like Agenda 2063 and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) respectively, seek to address Africa’s development challenges. However, the analysis underscores that structural barriers rooted in colonial fragmentation, socio-economic inequalities, and governance deficits continue to impede progress. By juxtaposing case studies from various African countries, the research demonstrates how sub-regional and …

Bi-Directional Transformers Vs. Word2vec: Discovering Vulnerabilities In Lifted Compiled Code, Gary Mccully, John Hastings, Shengjie Xu, Adam Fortier
Research & Publications
Detecting vulnerabilities within compiled binaries is challenging due to lost high-level code structures and other factors such as architectural dependencies, compilers, and optimization options. To address these obstacles, this research explores vulnerability detection using natural language processing (NLP) embedding techniques with word2vec, BERT, and RoBERTa to learn semantics from intermediate representation (LLVM IR) code. Long short-term memory (LSTM) neural networks were trained on embeddings from encoders created using approximately 48k LLVM functions from the Juliet dataset. This study is pioneering in its comparison of word2vec models with multiple bidirectional transformers (BERT, RoBERTa) embeddings built using LLVM code to train neural …

Immigrant Integration In Akureyri, Iceland: Identifying Ways To Cultivate A ‘Sense Of Belonging,’ From The Perspective Of Foreigners, Eliana Goldstein
Iceland: Climate Change and The Arctic
Iceland has experienced significant demographic changes since the 1990s. As climate change intensifies, raising the global temperature, migration to cooler climates such as Iceland will increase. To minimize ‘othering’ and rhetoric conducive to anti-immigrant environments, Iceland must work on integration issues, especially while opportunities and perceptions of other groups are still manageable. Through a series of interviews and discussions with foreigners in Akureyri and a focus group with employees from the University Centre of the Westfjords, integration was defined as a ‘sense of belonging’ and the ability to communicate with the native majority. To aid integration, this study identified a …

Care Here-And-There: How Transnational Family Networks Are Created And Endure Between Tunisia And Italy, Clare Corson
Tunisia and Italy: Politics and Religious Integration in the Mediterranean
Migration continues to be a highly relevant topic in Tunisia, the Maghreb, and Mediterranean regions in general. Tunisia and Italy are two countries with a specific, historical relationship of circular migration. With more and more Tunisian families living across borders, transnationalism and family networks are subjects that require more research. At their intersection is my research on how economic and social remittances come together to form the basis of transnational care networks. How do families and individuals navigate living both here and there? Using survey data and ethnographic interviews with individuals in both Tunisia and Italy, I explored questions of …

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program
The population of Poland could be of particular interest to researchers studying religion and spirituality. Catholicism has played a significant role in shaping the country’s culture, history, and tradition and is considered a national religion. More recently, however, the processes of moving away from regular participation in religious services and loosening ties with the institution of the Catholic Church are marked (Polish Public Opinion Research Center, CBOS). The Polish Catholic setting may modify the associations between psychological variables that have been studied in their relationships with spirituality, which have been investigated in religious contexts differing from a Polish Catholic one. …
