Breath, Body, And The Blank Page: An Autoethnographic Approach To Embodied Writing Practices In First-Year Writing, Kristen Garramone Hoffman Jan 2025

Breath, Body, And The Blank Page: An Autoethnographic Approach To Embodied Writing Practices In First-Year Writing, Kristen Garramone Hoffman

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation explores how somatic awareness and trauma-informed pedagogies can be integrated into the teaching of writing. Drawing from autoethnography and pedagogical theory, it proposes that writing is not a purely cognitive act but a deeply embodied process, one shaped by the physiological and psychological dimensions of lived experience. Using autoethnography as both method and praxis, the study centers the author’s experiences of trauma, grief, and healing to investigate how body-based practices such as breathwork, visualization, and mindfulness can support writing, particularly for students navigating stress, anxiety, or disconnection from their academic identities. Chapter One situates the research within literature …

As I Type: An Autoethnography Of Italian (Sicilian) Family Literacies Across Generations In The United States, Kailyn Nicole Giaccone

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation aims to investigate the racialization of my own family through the examination of migration and citizenship documents, primary sources, and oral histories as told by those who were present for or knew those present for events in question. Participants, including myself, were members of the same family, identified as either male or female, and ranged in age from 30 years to 80 years old. Participants were either monolingual English speakers or multilingual in English, Italian, and/or Sicilian. The methodology used to accomplish this research was autoethnography, which allowed the use of traditional database research, archival examinations of primary …

Sonic Futures: Exploring Podcasting, Artificial Intelligence, And The Evolving Landscape Of Composition, Grant David Crawford Jan 2025

Sonic Futures: Exploring Podcasting, Artificial Intelligence, And The Evolving Landscape Of Composition, Grant David Crawford

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation investigates podcasting and audio projects as multimodal practices in composition, analyzing how audio-based assignments both challenge and reproduce traditional writing norms. Drawing from personal teaching experience and a dataset of publicly accessible assignment prompts, rubrics, and instructional guides, the study examines how podcast projects are framed, assessed, and implemented in higher education. While often promoted as creative and accessible alternatives to essays, these assignments frequently replicate the same thesis-driven, rubric-centered, and exclusionary structures that define conventional academic writing. Through a cross-textual analysis of fifteen podcast rubrics and fifteen assignment prompts, this project identifies recurring patterns, including paradoxical expectations …

Recognizing Speculative Literature: Conceiving Identity In The Archives Of Enslavement, Gabriella Greco Jan 2025

Recognizing Speculative Literature: Conceiving Identity In The Archives Of Enslavement, Gabriella Greco

Theses and Dissertations

One of the key problems of the archive of enslavement, borne out of the violent erasure of enslaved identities, is the struggle to reconstruct and honor those lost identities. Recognizing Speculative Literature: Conceiving Identity in the Archives of Enslavement investigates postcolonial archival processes and the resulting documents to identify a spectrum of speculative literary genres that can be used to supplement traumatic archival erasures, often of female voices and identities, to further understand the power dynamics. To clarify, I use the term ‘speculative literature’ here to refer to a mode of literature that relies on the few fragments that may …

Sustainability Risk In Guyana’S Oil Sector: An Analytical Framework For Balancing Environmental And Economic Impacts, Kayla B. Moonsammy Jan 2025

Sustainability Risk In Guyana’S Oil Sector: An Analytical Framework For Balancing Environmental And Economic Impacts, Kayla B. Moonsammy

Theses and Dissertations

This study investigates the sustainability risks posed by Guyana’s rapidly expanding oil sector, with particular focus on balancing economic benefits against environmental vulnerabilities. The primary aim is to develop a Sustainability Risk Index (SRI) that captures the multidimensional impacts of offshore oil development using an integrated data-driven framework. Specifically, this thesis examines how emissions, biodiversity loss, oil spill exposure, economic volatility, and social development indicators interact to influence sustainability outcomes in the context of Guyana’s transition into a major petroleum-producing nation. The research does not involve human participants; instead, it draws on publicly available datasets collected from 2015 to 2024. …

A History Of Individuation: Aristotle, Jung, Simondon And The Vital Impulse, Sam Gould Jan 2025

A History Of Individuation: Aristotle, Jung, Simondon And The Vital Impulse, Sam Gould

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies Advance Publication Archive

This paper theoretically situates transformation as a biophysiological process specific to information transfer in and throughout a multicellular organism, conceptualized as the epigenesis, morphogenesis, and formation of the self in the unfolding process of individuation. The self will be ascribed, not merely as the Jungian definition of something to be realized through individuation, but rather, as a twofold operation: (a) As a conjunction within the process of individuation that extends into, as part of, the possible future process of individuation; to account for this phase in the operation of the unfolding of the self, the paper refers to Gilbert Simondon’s …

Disability As Identity, Jessica Schomberg Jan 2025

Disability As Identity, Jessica Schomberg

Library Services Publications

This chapter will focus on disability as an identity category: who gets to claim it, who gets to refuse it, and who has it thrust on them against their will. It will also talk about the power that comes from claiming disability identities and being in community with disabled people. This chapter will not discuss nondisabled as an identity category, nor will it discuss caregiver identities. With that basic understanding, we can work to move conversations about disability in libraries beyond the minimal expectations of inclusion and to a more joyous celebration of disabled people as full participants in library …

A Cross Attention Approach To Diagnostic Explainability Using Clinical Practice Guidelines For Depression, Sumit Dalal, Deepa Tilwani, Manas Gaur, Sarika Jain, Valerie L. Shalin, Amit P. Sheth Jan 2025

A Cross Attention Approach To Diagnostic Explainability Using Clinical Practice Guidelines For Depression, Sumit Dalal, Deepa Tilwani, Manas Gaur, Sarika Jain, Valerie L. Shalin, Amit P. Sheth

Psychology Faculty Publications

The lack of explainability in using relevant clinical knowledge hinders the adoption of artificial intelligence-powered analysis of unstructured clinical dialogue. A wealth of relevant, untapped Mental Health (MH) data is available in online communities, providing the opportunity to address the explainability problem with substantial potential impact as a screening tool for both online and offline applications. Inspired by how clinicians rely on their expertise when interacting with patients, we leverage relevant clinical knowledge to classify and explain depression-related data, reducing manual review time and engendering trust. We developed a method to enhance attention in contemporary transformer models and generate explanations …

Intertwining Wisdom: The Fusion Of Indigenous Knowledge And Liberal Arts And Sciences Education Discourses At The Autonomous Intercultural Indigenous University In The Colombian Cauca, Paula Milena Suárez Sandoval

GHEA21 Publications

This research shows how the Autonomous Intercultural Indigenous University (UAIIN), the most important community-based indigenous higher education institution in Colombia, has developed an educational model that harmonizes indigenous traditional knowledge with contemporary Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) discourses of higher education. Through qualitative analysis, the study compares how these two approaches are reflected in discourses around the purpose of education, pedagogical methods, and the university’s curriculum. The findings highlight an educational model that reconciles the inclusion of indigenous epistemologies with the contemporary dynamics of higher education.

Exploring The Impact Of Yoga On Self-Perception In People With Aphasia, Meta Riley Hurm Jan 2025

Exploring The Impact Of Yoga On Self-Perception In People With Aphasia, Meta Riley Hurm

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Instances of complex diagnoses and acquired language loss, such as aphasia, are often accompanied by a variety of deficits in quality of life. Most notably, individuals’ self-perceptions can be altered by these diagnoses, as new life complications bring about the necessity for major adjustments. This study utilized interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) to analyze the effects of participation in an adapted yoga program on self-perception, specifically evoking change in identity, emotional health, sense of community, and self-acceptance. Through interviews with six individuals with a primary aphasia diagnosis, findings revealed three major superordinate themes of self-perception: identity, self-care, and attunement. Participants' answers …

Theorizing Gender And Social Movements Beyond The Binary, Nancy Whittier Jan 2025

Theorizing Gender And Social Movements Beyond The Binary, Nancy Whittier

Sociology: Faculty Books

This innovative Handbook examines how gender shapes social activism and is shaped by activism. With a unique interdisciplinary focus, it explores the effects of the gender binary on experiences of activism, considering how different movements negotiate and, at times, challenge these traditional conceptions. It then moves beyond the binary to explore how gender is challenged by contemporary movements.

Expert authors discuss the impact and limitations of the gender binary, using examples such as the MeToo movement to demonstrate how viewing men and women as separate, monolithic categories results in countless differences being overlooked. Chapters present a range of global and …

I Can See A Future… Creative Ways To Talk About Climate Change, Georgia Young Jan 2025

I Can See A Future… Creative Ways To Talk About Climate Change, Georgia Young

MESM Major Papers

Though a majority of Americans accept climate change as a reality, most people are hesitant to discuss the issue. And the implications of climate silence have far-reaching effects, including less action on climate change. This project synthesizes recent research on climate change, climate silence, and climate action to create a workbook-style zine. This tool is meant to help people who are concerned about the changing climate have generative, deep conversations about this crisis. Through a literature review, a first-person interview, and centering inclusive science communication principles, I created I can see a future: Creative ways to talk about climate change. …

Application Of A New Learning Company Layers Model Through Participatory Action Research, Donald L. Jones Jan 2025

Application Of A New Learning Company Layers Model Through Participatory Action Research, Donald L. Jones

Doctor of Business Administration (DBA)

Objective: This dissertation utilized Participatory Action Research to explore the impact of implementing a new learning organization model in the field, The Learning Company Layers Model. The concept of a learning organization was made popular by Senge (1990/2006) and further advanced by Gilley and Maycunich (2000a), who expanded the idea that employee development involved more than training. Studies indicating that these models have not been widely adopted by organizational leadership inspired the development of a new model using an adult learning-supported, layered approach as a potential introductory phase of such a transition.

Method: The literature review examined the …

Wonder No More: A Review Of Into Arabia, Brant A. Gardner Jan 2025

Wonder No More: A Review Of Into Arabia, Brant A. Gardner

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Into Arabia is a collected reprint of six articles. The first chapter reprints an article that first appeared in BYU Studies. The other five appeared in Interpreter. Both BYU Studies and Interpreter are peer-reviewed academic journals, which means that all these articles were examined and reviewed prior to publication. Thus, my review is more of a synopsis of the importance of each chapter rather than a detailed critique.

Easter As Threshold: Trauma, Transformation, And God’S Presence In Liminal Spaces, Joseph W. Green Jan 2025

Easter As Threshold: Trauma, Transformation, And God’S Presence In Liminal Spaces, Joseph W. Green

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Using the context of Easter, this personal essay explores perceptions of God’s presence and absence during human suffering. There is a theological thread that ties Christ’s suffering for our griefs and sorrows during his Atonement directly to his ability to succor us as we enter into despair due to our own trauma. Our suffering occurs during moments of transition and vulnerability known as “liminal spaces.” It is in these moments that the Savior meets us at the threshold, helping us move through trauma toward transformation in Christ. Our ability to move forward openly in liminal spaces will help us to …

Honorable Intentions With An Unreliable Methodology: Lucas’S Response Underscores The Problems, Jeff Lindsay Jan 2025

Honorable Intentions With An Unreliable Methodology: Lucas’S Response Underscores The Problems, Jeff Lindsay

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

James Lucas has made a passionate response to the negative review I offered for his and Jonathan Neville’s book By Means of Urim & Thummim. Though we agree on many important issues, there are some troubling gaps that readers of their book need to understand. Some of these issues may be illustrated in the methodology of Lucas’s response. In general, the unreliable methodology and its often extreme, unnuanced approach to dealing with complex, unclear issues must be challenged, as painful as that has been. The complaints in my review remain intact if not further underscored by Lucas’s response. The …
