Culturally Relevant Pedagogy In Mathematics Education, Efe Mensah-Brown
Culturally Relevant Pedagogy In Mathematics Education, Efe Mensah-Brown
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The literature review explored how Ladson-Billings’ (1995) definition of culturally relevant pedagogy (CRP), with the three tenets of academic achievement, cultural competence and sociopolitical consciousness, could be used in mathematics education. The use of CRP in mathematics education to positively transform mathematics instruction and combat racial stereotypes by improving the mathematics identities of all students was explored. The research found that the integration of CRP in mathematics education improved the academic success of students by making the mathematics more engaging and relevant. The research also showed that the use of CRP in mathematics education positively influenced students’ mathematics identities. For …

The Importance Of Pragmatics In The Foreign Language Classroom, Emma Marie Hatsuko Van Ermen
The Importance Of Pragmatics In The Foreign Language Classroom, Emma Marie Hatsuko Van Ermen
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Pragmatics has received relatively little attention in language instruction, as it is often regarded as a higher level skill and has only recently gained prominence in linguistic research. This literature review examines the role of pragmatics in foreign language teaching and explores why it is a critical component of language acquisition. First, pragmatics is distinguished from other linguistic branches, such as syntax and semantics, to clarify its unique function in shaping context-dependent communication. Then, the importance of pragmatics in language learning is discussed and the benefits of explicit teaching are highlighted. Finally, common methods for teaching pragmatics such as audio-visual …

While the population of multilingual learners (MLs) in the United States has grown rapidly in recent years, many teachers feel unprepared to teach them. The professional development (PD) teachers receive is often misaligned with their particular needs and experiences. This design-based research study examined the development and impact of online PD designed with teacher input to improve writing instruction for young MLs. Data were collected over twelve months from 25 teachers in six Southeastern U.S. school districts. Researchers evaluated the impact of the PD on teachers’ knowledge and self-efficacy for teaching writing to MLs. Findings highlight how teachers made instructional …

Multilingual Voices: Transforming Professional Development Based On Student Perceptions Of Literacy Learning, Nicole Ferguson-Sams, Emily Howell, Rebecca Kaminski, Mihaela Gazioglu, Victoria Pennington
Publications
Acknowledging student perceptions of academic learning has been shown to increase the effectiveness of classroom instruction. However, existing research on multilingual learners (MLs) often focuses on their pedagogical and linguistic needs, overlooking their perceptions of literacy learning. This research, part of a large-scale, design-based research (DBR) project, explores MLs' perceptions of literacy learning to increase the capacity of instruction through professional development to classroom teachers in a high-needs school district. Using grounded theory coding, we analyzed MLs' responses from a self-efficacy survey to gain insight into their perceptions of literacy learning. Those findings were used to inform DBR modifications, including …

Student Research Poster Presentations 2025
This ethnographic study collected and analyzed interviews of 8 children with “other” fluency disorders: cluttering, atypical disfluency, excessive non-stuttering like disfluency. Each school-age child participated in a semi-structured interview focusing on grand and mini tour questions. The participants were asked to speak about their perspective and experience with communication in general. Preliminary results of this study revealed the following themes: friendships are hard; high-level communication is a goal; everyone doesn’t ‘get’ me when I talk. Clinical and research implications of findings will be discussed.
Waldorf Education: New Perspectives On A Holistic Approach, Martyn Rawson
Waldorf Education: New Perspectives On A Holistic Approach, Martyn Rawson
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
This article outlines some of the core ideas underlying the practices of Waldorf education as re-envisioned by an experienced practitioner, as a contribution to the discussion about the educational implications of transpersonal psychology. It outlines a pedagogical anthropology that takes the spiritual dimension into account. It distinguishes between the lived body, the emergent psyche and the agentic Self as the spiritual core of being in the person. Learning is explained as a transformative process that involves the changing relationships to one’s own body, to others and to the world through which potentialities become abilities. The aim of the transformative education …

Surveys are a core methodological tool in government, industry, and academia, providing essential data for theory development and evidence-based decision-making. As artificial intelligence continues its rapid advancement, it stands to fundamentally transform the entire survey lifecycle - from design and administration to analytics and reporting. Previous transitions to new technologies, such as telephone, internet, and non-probability surveys, led to divisions within the survey research community with real consequences for both the trajectory of research and trust in the industry. We believe the survey community should take proactive steps now to avoid similar challenges with AI integration. Specifically, our paper examines …

Decreasing Disruptive Behaviors In Elementary Students With Emotional And Behavioral Disorders To Promote Academic And Social Success, Parker K. Bakke
Decreasing Disruptive Behaviors In Elementary Students With Emotional And Behavioral Disorders To Promote Academic And Social Success, Parker K. Bakke
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis investigated how elementary special education teachers can support students with EBD to promote social and academic success. Students with EBD struggle with behaviors that can negatively affect the classroom environment such as aggression, inattentiveness, impulsivity, defiance, and lack of self-regulation. These result in poor relationships with peers and adverse effects on learning. Teachers who use proper interventions, structured classroom schedules, and consistent routines can support these behaviors. Incorporating social-emotional learning (SEL), as well as building safe and strong relationships with both students and their families, can also aid in promoting positive outcomes. Without the appropriate knowledge, support, and …

Theses & ETDs
This thesis examines the feminization of Guanyin in China and how her devotees history were shaped by Chinese ideals, desires, social statuses, and gendered life experiences. have worshipped her throughout Chinese history. Originally a male Indian deity named Avalokitesvara, they were introduced to China around the first to second century via the Silk Road. Since the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), Guanyin has been a universally recognized female deity of mercy and compassion throughout East Asia, known as Kannon in Japan and Gwaen-eum in Korea. As a bodhisattva who delays their enlightenment to help others, Guanyin protects women, children, sailors, and those …
Probing Alopecia Areata: Jak-Stat Dysregulation And Immuno-Epigenetic, Neuroendocrine, Pharmacological, And Biopsychosocial Complexities In Autoimmune Pathogenesis, Isaiah Johnson
Theses & ETDs
Alopecia areata (AA) is an autoimmune disorder in which hair is lost abruptly because the immune system damages hair follicles. In this thesis, I will first review the epidemiology and biology of the disorder and will then discuss the therapeutic potential of JAK-STAT pathway inhibition for AA and the pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics of JAK inhibitors, in particular Ruxolitinib. The Janus kinase/signal transducer/activator of transcription JAK-STAT pathway is a major driver of immune and inflammatory response, and its dysregulation contributes to AA. Ruxolitinib, by preventing JAK’s activity, reduces pro-inflammatory cytokines, allowing restoration of immune privilege in hair follicles and regenerating hair. …
Between Repression And Revolution: Queer Resistance And The Fight For Change In Morocco, Nisreen Kalai
Between Repression And Revolution: Queer Resistance And The Fight For Change In Morocco, Nisreen Kalai
Theses & ETDs
This thesis explores the shifting dynamics of LGBTQ+ activism in Morocco, challenging the perception that queerness is foreign to Moroccan culture. It situates contemporary struggles within a broader historical context shaped by colonialism, Islamic conservatism, and today's culture. The legacy of French-imposed laws, particularly Article 489, continues to criminalize same-sex relationships and reinforce a culture of silence around queer existence. Despite this repression, LGBTQ+ individuals in Morocco are actively resisting, through grassroots organizing, digital platforms, feminist coalitions, and community-based care. The February 20th Movement marked a turning point, creating new spaces for expression and solidarity, even as queer voices remain …

Centering Maternal Breastfeeding In The Old English Metrical Charm 6, Kierra E. Burns
Centering Maternal Breastfeeding In The Old English Metrical Charm 6, Kierra E. Burns
Quidditas
This article examines female authority and self-determination in relation to maternal lactation during early medieval England. While breastfeeding has always been essential to infant survival, its cultural significance extends beyond nourishment alone, reflecting broader social values and assumptions about gender and motherhood. Within this context, early English texts reveal that lactating mothers were regarded as natural authorities in the processes of childbearing and nourishing their infants. Through analysis of historical and literary evidence, this article argues that maternal breastfeeding was viewed in inherently positive and empowering terms with maternal self-determination and authority at the heart of that positivity. The article …

Birth And Rebirth: The Fish In Mesoamerican Art And Its Implication On Stela 5, Izapa, Chiapas, Mexico, Diane E. Wirth
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
A revealing analysis of fish iconography in Mesoamerica, in relation to the ancestral couple on Stela 5, Izapa, Chiapas, Mexico, holds an unforeseen element that may reveal a key to the Tree of Life referred to in the Book of Mormon. This key is supported by Mesoamerican, Hebrew, and Egyptian traditions.
Trust Us, We’Re Lawyers: Lucas And Neville On The Translation Of The Book Of Mormon, Brant A. Gardner
Trust Us, We’Re Lawyers: Lucas And Neville On The Translation Of The Book Of Mormon, Brant A. Gardner
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
In their book, James Lucas and Jonathan Neville present two major theses relative to translation of the Book of Mormon. The first is that the translation was always done by means of the interpreters that were delivered with the plates. The second is that Joseph Smith was an active participant in the translation process. A theory is laid out for how that might happen. Although this reviewer can agree that Joseph was an active participant in the translation, neither the first thesis nor their explanation of the second thesis can be accepted by those familiar with the historical record.
Through A Glass Darkly: Restoring Translation To The Restoration?, Jeff Lindsay
Through A Glass Darkly: Restoring Translation To The Restoration?, Jeff Lindsay
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
In By Means of the Urim & Thummim, James Lucas and Jonathan Neville valiantly seek to defend Joseph Smith’s role as the divinely inspired translator, a role that they argue is incompatible with using any tool other than the Nephite “intepreters,” later called the Urim and Thummim. They offer a unique theory to account for the statements of witnesses about Joseph using a seer stone in a hat, arguing that it was a fake demonstration using memorized passages to satisfy onlooker curiosity about the translation process. They propose a translation model in which Joseph did more than just get …

The Psychometric Properties Of A Spanish Version Of The Attitudes And Beliefs Scale-2 Short Form In A Mexican Sample, Verónica Compeán
The Psychometric Properties Of A Spanish Version Of The Attitudes And Beliefs Scale-2 Short Form In A Mexican Sample, Verónica Compeán
Theses and Dissertations
The Attitudes and Beliefs Scale 2-Short Form (ABS2-SF) is one of the most widely used measures of irrational and rational beliefs central to Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT). While evidence supports its reliability and validity in English-speaking populations, little is known about its applicability across cultural and linguistic groups. This study investigated the psychometric properties and cultural validity of the Spanish version of the ABS2-SF in a Mexican sample (n = 579) collected from undergraduate students in Tampico, Mexico, and compared them with English-speaking American non-clinical samples (n = 1,167). Using a bifactor multi-group confirmatory factor analysis (MG-CFA), I examined …
Neural Congruency Contrastive Learning Framework Validation Using Artificially Created Eeg Data For Dyslexia Research, Jacqueline M. Torres
Neural Congruency Contrastive Learning Framework Validation Using Artificially Created Eeg Data For Dyslexia Research, Jacqueline M. Torres
Theses and Dissertations
Analysis of electroencephalogram (EEG) recordings in children with dyslexia has been commonly used to explore the neural mechanisms underlying reading disorders. Yet, challenges such as low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), high inter-subject and inter-trial variability, and the inherently multivariate nature of EEG signals hinder the isolation of neural components elicited during reading diagnostic tests. To mitigate these challenges, the neural-congruency analysis framework was recently proposed, leveraging traditional machine learning optimization methods to incorporate domain knowledge about the congruency of neural responses across participants (i.e., consistent neural responses among proficient readers). However, the application of deep learning techniques, specifically contrastive learning, remains …
