Evaluation Of Teacher, Self-Assessment, Versus Combined Feedback To Increase Students’ Behavioral Observation Skills, Jie Zhang, Marcie N. Desrochers, Michael Fensken
International Journal of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education
Feedback is an important component of online instruction. Few experiments have examined combined types of feedback (teacher feedback or student self-assessment) compared to extra practice with each on student learning. In this study, the experimental effectiveness of four methods of feedback delivery on students’ acquisition of behavioral observation skills was evaluated—teacher feedback only (TT condition), student self-assessment only (SS condition), teacher-then-student self-assessment (TS condition), or student self-assessment-then-teacher (ST condition). The results, both for a random sample of individual learners as well as at an overall group level, suggest that the SS condition was superior to the TS condition. In the …

Decolonising Information Literacy: Diversity Integration For Empowering Minority Groups, Elize Du Toit
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
For a long time, library guides (LibGuides) have been essential resources for linking students with information related to faculty, specific subjects, and coursework. However, the scope of LibGuides has expanded significantly in contemporary library practices. They now include a wide variety of resources, such as guides on particular library products, platforms, resources, instructional materials, and 'how-to' guides. These enhanced features demonstrate the changing requirements of library users as they navigate a more complicated academic environment. In 2016, the University of Johannesburg launched an online course on information literacy using the SpringShare LibGuide platform, which was highly successful. Originally created in …

Digital Multimodal Composing In An L2 Italian Classroom: The Effects Of Digital Video Projects On Students’ Development And Investment, Francesca Marino
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Despite the calls for integrating digital multimodal composing (DMC) into second language (L2) pedagogy, learners’ gains in terms of L2 development beyond writing remain largely unexplored. Additionally, while research points to the potential of DMC to promote students’ engagement and motivation in the L2 classroom (e.g., Hava, 2021; Hull & Nelson, 2005; Shin & Cimasko, 2008), learners’ investment (Darvin & Norton, 2015, 2023; Norton, 1995) in L2 learning through DMC has been underrepresented in previous literature. In addition, DMC research on investment until now has almost exclusively focused on the learning of English as a foreign or second language (e.g., …

This research paper explores the role of speaker, listener and real-time social attention for pronoun comprehension in autistic and nonautistic children in the northeast United States. We assessed the pronoun comprehension of 22 autistic children (average age of 62 months, range 46–80 months) and 22 nonautistic children (average age 44 months, range 30–57 months) matched on expressive vocabulary scores. We evaluated the first- and second-person possessive pronoun comprehension (“my” and “your”) using a game in which two experimenters hid stickers and provided clues to their location by providing a verbal clue (e.g. “It’s in your box”) with accompanying gaze to …

“Time Is Our Only Ally!”: Indigenous Heroism And Native Slipstream In Turok, Son Of Stone, Justin Wigard
Heroism Science
In this article, I draw on Frederick Luis Aldama’s framework of Graphic Indigeneity to revisit the long history of an Indigenous hero figure in comics: Turok, a pre-Columbian Mandan warrior lost in a prehistoric space known as the Lost Valley. First appearing in Dell’s Four Color Comics #596 (1954), Turok has appeared throughout comics history for nearly 70 years, primarily written and drawn by white creative teams, yet a visually, narratively prominent Indigenous hero in the comics page, one who has periodically been a top-selling popular character in the comics industry. To this end, I argue that Turok is a …

Model Explanations For Gender And Ethnicity Bias Mitigation In Ai-Generated Narratives, Martha Otisi Dimgba
Dissertations and Theses
Large Language Models (LLMs) are increasingly utilized in diverse applications, ranging from professional content creation to decision-making systems. However, their outputs often amplify the biases present in their training data, perpetuating stereotypes and reinforcing societal inequities, particularly regarding gender and ethnicity. Such biases can cause tangible harm, especially for underrepresented groups, and require awareness and effective mitigation strategies.
This work explores gender and ethnicity representation in narratives created by generative AI describing 25 occupational fields defined by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. We examine three large language models (LLMs)--Llama 3.1 70B Instruct, Claude 3.5 Sonnet, and GPT 4.0 Turbo. …

State-Powered Acceleration Of Cannabis Economy Growth Engines, Benjamin C. Varadi
State-Powered Acceleration Of Cannabis Economy Growth Engines, Benjamin C. Varadi
Pace Law Review
Small cannabis companies in state-regulated markets have driven extraordinary job creation and economic growth, but now face extinction as consolidation looms. Government intervention can build a future populated with prosperous small business growth engines, while failure to act will magnify economic disparity. This Article proposes state-backed loan guarantees, funded by municipal “cannabonds,” as a novel solution to guide the industry toward a healthier and more diverse economic landscape. This approach offers constitutionally resilient strategies to express explicit preference for local stakeholders and inverts traditional risk metrics to leverage historic institutional lending bias as a force for positive change. In doing …

How Active Cftc Enforcement Could Benefit Crypto, Carol R. Goforth
Pace Law Review
Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) crypto enforcement rose to record levels in 2023, prompting applause from some observers and criticism from others. In fact, the CFTC’s enforcement agenda is not out of step with other federal agencies such as the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), which has also been incredibly active in the crypto industry. It might seem that this is bad news for crypto, given that both the CFTC and SEC have been angling to become the primary regulator for these new assets. In reality, proof that the CFTC is active in enforcing the law against crypto entrepreneurs and …

Pace Law Review
As the ultimate arbiter of the interpretation of federal law and the U.S. Constitution, the U.S. Supreme Court has a significant impact on businesses and individuals across an increasingly diverse country. Although the vast majority of the Justices who have served on the Court have been white males, recent Presidents have appointed nominees who have brought greater racial and gender diversity to the Court. Despite these efforts, however, not a single U.S. Supreme Court Justice in the past six decades has been born abroad, even though Americans who were born outside the United States constitute nearly a tenth of the …

Down, But Not Out: How Termination Of Asylee Status Leaves Open A Path To Lawful Permanent Residency, Mason Strand
Immigration and Human Rights Law Review
Beat into “legal limbo” is not how anyone would like to describe their legal situation. But this is exactly where former asylees like Joel Siwe and Tiger Cela have ended up when they were excluded from adjusting to lawful permanent residence under the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) § 209(b) because of the termination of their asylum status.
In 2001, Joel Siwe was granted asylum on the grounds that he would be persecuted. But within a year of entering the United States, Siwe was convicted of money laundering and sentenced to prison. When Siwe got out, his asylum status was …

An Improved Aquila Optimization With Fuzzy Model Based Energy Efficient Cluster Routing Protocol For Wireless Sensor Networks, Ramakrishnan Ramamoorthy, Rameshkumar Ranganathan, Sivakumar Ramu
Yanbu Journal of Engineering and Science
Due to the latest advances in microelectronics, wireless sensor networking (WSN) has been introduced in many applications. The flow of event data in WSN applications requires timely and reliable distribution so that immediate response and appropriate action can be taken. However, the limited power supply to the sensor terminal causes a transmission between the delay on the way to the base station and the power consumption. Clustering techniques are essential in developing the WSN routing algorithm that improves network operating time and power efficiency. However, due to the unbalanced power consumption between the terminals, the WSN is the optimal, energy …

Ocr For English Characters Based On Polar Histogram Feature Extraction And Euclidean Distance, Saleh Ali Alshehri
Yanbu Journal of Engineering and Science
Optical character recognition is the process of converting characters from image format to text format. The process includes four main stages namely: pre-processing, feature extraction, character recognition, and post-processing. The success is mainly based on the feature extraction method and the character recognition algorithm. When optical character recognition systems are developed for mobile devices, two main constraints must be addressed. They are the system's size and speed. In this research, both were considered. A small feature dataset was created using polar histogram of x and y projections of the character image. In addition, a simple character recognition algorithm based on …
