Disconnected Connection, Dyane O'Leary Jan 2025

Disconnected Connection, Dyane O'Leary

Suffolk University Law School Faculty Works

Lawyers are more digitally connected than ever, but the human side of connection is shifting. In a profession built on relationships, technological transformations from videoconferencing to Generative AI reshape how lawyers converse, empathize, and build rapport. Amid industry calls to prioritize ‘soft’ people skills, lawyers face a growing paradox: tools offering convenience and efficiency disrupt traditional methods of on-the-job training and mentorship from generations past. This Article draws on lessons from an empirical, interview-based study of law students, professional development legal personnel, and senior lawyers to examine interpersonal connection as a modern lawyering skill. Against a backdrop of swirling influences …

Generative Ai And Legal Aid: Results From A Field Study And 100 Use Cases To Bridge The Access To Justice Gap, Colleen V. Chien, Miriam Kim Jan 2025

Generative Ai And Legal Aid: Results From A Field Study And 100 Use Cases To Bridge The Access To Justice Gap, Colleen V. Chien, Miriam Kim

Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review

How can AI tools be used to address the access to justice gap—the 90% of low-income Americans that lack adequate legal assistance? We conducted the first field study of lawyers using generative AI of which we are aware and a companion survey of 202 legal aid professionals to find out. A cohort of ninety-one people received up to two months of access to paid generative artificial intelligence tools, a randomly selected subset of which also received “concierge” support, including peer use cases, office hours, and assistance. Following the pilot, 90% of pilot participants reported increased productivity, and 75% reported their …

Fine-Tuning Llms: Structural Fluency And Augmentation For The Great And Powerful Wizard Of Ai, Verónica C. Gonzales Jan 2025

Fine-Tuning Llms: Structural Fluency And Augmentation For The Great And Powerful Wizard Of Ai, Verónica C. Gonzales

Duke Law & Technology Review

The civil legal tradition carries assumptions, biases, and attitudes rooted in racism and ideologies intended to protect the (im)balance of power. This moment in history offers new versions of the same challenges with the integration of artificial intelligence (“AI”) and large language models (“LLMs”) into legal frameworks, and those critiques are being addressed in the legal discourse. Building on these perspectives, this moment also offers civil legal professionals a chance to engage in machine learning frameworks informed by social justice principles and accountable to measures of “equal justice for all.” The perception of fairness in the use of these tools …

Why Did The Lawyer Cross The Road? The Aba's Proposal To Overhaul Model Rule 5.5 And Permit Cross-Border Practice, Paula Frederick

Akron Law Review

The American Bar Association (ABA) is considering a proposal to amend Model Rule 5.5, which would allow lawyers licensed in any U.S. jurisdiction to practice law across state lines under specific conditions. This "driver's license" model aims to address current regulatory barriers by permitting lawyers to provide legal services nationwide, provided they disclose their home jurisdiction, comply with local rules, and meet certain ethical standards. Motivated by the pandemic, technological changes, and the uniform bar exam, the proposal seeks to improve access to legal services, reduce regulatory burdens, and offer clients greater choice of counsel, though it faces potential challenges …

Uconn-Isu-Ilcc Lfp/Gr Battery Aging Dataset, Benjamin Nowacki, Jayanth Ramamurthy, Adam Thelen, Chad Tischer, Cary L. Pint, Chao Hu

REIL Datasets

This dataset encompasses 64 LithiumWerks APR18650M1B cells cycled under 11 unique conditions until they reached their end-of-life at 80% remaining capacity. Cycling tests were interrupted approximately every 3.5 days (~100 cycles, depending on the conditions) to perform a reference performance test (RPT). During the RPT, the cell’s current capacity is measured, and several 100-second-long CC pulses are recorded at three states of charge. The cycling and RPT data are sampled at 1Hz and span over 38 weeks of testing.

The short-duration pulses are shown to have a high correlation with the cell’s state of health, with implementation details provided in …

Persons With Intellectual Disability And Access To Justice In Nigeria: Challenges And The Way Forward, Augustine Edobor Arimoro

Hasanuddin Law Review

Conservatively, there are approximately about two million persons in Nigeria who may be referred to as persons with intellectual disabilities. These persons suffer from several challenges ranging from economic to non-inclusion in the society. In the paper, the discussion focuses on persons with intellectual disabilities and the effective access to justice as a fundamental right. The paper finds that even though Nigeria has adopted and ratified the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, the Federal Government of Nigeria has not been proactive in supporting the persons with disabilities in the country to enjoy these rights. Furthermore, …

Protection Of Migrant Workers Under The Icmw: Incompatibility With Malaysian Laws And Position In Asean, Saidatul Nadia Abdul Aziz, Salawati Mat Basir

Hasanuddin Law Review

The International Convention on The Protection of The Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families (ICMW) is the only Human Rights Convention that distinguishes between normal and irregular migrants in great detail. An analysis of the situation in Malaysia, based on feedback from relevant stakeholders, shows that there are insurmountable obstacles to ratification in relation to the ambiguous policy status for migrant workers, which is based on ad hoc policies. Malaysian legislation appears to be straightforward in its approach to labour migration policies, as it defines and categorises migrants into two distinct ‘categories': registered migrant (regular migrant) …

The Presence Of The Defense Lawyer In Vietnam’S Criminal Justice System: Substantive Or Cosmetic?, Le Lan Chi, Nguyen Thi Lan, Nguyen Hoang Ngan

Hasanuddin Law Review

Defense lawyers play an important role in protecting the rights and interests of the accused, contributing to upholding justice and reducing the number of wrongful convictions. In Vietnam, in accordance with the current Criminal Procedure Code of 2015, defense lawyers have been given more and more rights to perform legal defense activities. However, defense lawyers are still considered to be passive participants in criminal proceedings, classified under the “judicial complementary” group. The right of lawyers to collect evidence is restricted. Furthermore, other rights have not been fully implemented. The number of lawyers compared to the entire population remains low, and …
