Reducing The Rates Of Blood Culture Contaminations In The Emergency Department, Erin G. Calamari
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
Blood cultures are the gold standard for the diagnosis of blood stream infections and determining proper antibiotic management. When drawing blood cultures, there is a risk of contamination which can lead to inappropriate antibiotic treatment, additional unnecessary tests, extended hospital length of stay, unwarranted admissions, and excess costs. Northwest Community Hospital’s emergency department blood culture contamination rate was 2.45%, which exceeds the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute’s national goal ofBlood culture supply bundles were introduced to staff during an education session and implemented on the unit for 8 weeks. These supply bundles were packaged for convenience to contain all the …

Conclusion
Parents do not suddenly relinquish medical decision-making to their children and are a vital part of a process construed within the framework of consent and confidentiality laws. In the transition period from childhood to adulthood, adolescents develop unique healthcare needs and concerns at the very time they are gaining autonomy from their parents. Adolescents progress from being recipients of decisions about their care to gradually becoming active participants in their healthcare and emerge as a primary partner in medical decision-making. Building a strong therapeutic alliance with young people can help them become responsible healthcare decision-makers.
Yet while “healthcare,” including …

Human–Wildlife Interactions Monographs
Native flora and fauna of North America face numerous threats, and impacts from invasive species are some of the most challenging. Free-ranging domestic cats (Felis catus) are extremely harmful to wildlife and the environment. The Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies (AFWA) developed a toolkit to provide guidance to fish and wildlife agencies as they address free-ranging domestic cats on agency lands managed for native wildlife and ecosystem health. Topics in this document include wildlife conservation, infectious diseases, legal issues, education and outreach, human dimensions, partnerships, management strategies, and model regulatory and legal language. This toolkit is not …

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the United States; yet, despite the availability of safe and effective HPV vaccines, only half of eligible adolescents have completed the vaccine series. School-entry requirements are one proven strategy to increase vaccination rates among children and youth and reduce the burden of HPV-related cancer. This study investigated community perceptions of an HPV vaccine school-entry mandate in Virginia and the consequences of a low threshold exemption option included in the legislation. We conducted 40 interviews with community members including 15 interviews with parents, 19 with healthcare providers, and 6 with …

Analysis Of Protein-Protein Interactions Between Legionella Pneumophilia Effectors, Briana Harness
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Legionella pneumophila an intracellular, opportunistic pathogen that is the causative agent of Legionnaires’ disease and Pontiac fever. A key component of Legionella’s pathogenicity is a series of effector proteins, which aid in the establishment of the Legionella-containing vacuole (LCV). The abundant library of effector proteins L. pneumophila has within its arsenal gives L. pneumophila the ability to infect several different hosts. The pathogenesis of L. pneumophila within various hosts depends on its ability to modulate the activity of its effector proteins through protein-protein interactions within effectors and eukaryotic host cell proteins. By understanding how L. pneumophila regulates its effectors, a …

Introduction: Mycobacterial infections are an atypical organism for pulmonary infections. These infections are classically separated in tuberculous (MTB) and nontuberculous (NTM) groups due to their differing pathogenicity and microbiologic therapy regimens. MTB is typically treated with a 4-drug therapy known as RIPE (rifampin, isoniazid, pyrazinamide, and ethambutol) however NTM is typically treated with 3- or 4-drug therapy with a backbone of rifampin, macrolide, and ethambutol. Due to the long courses of therapy required for NTM, stringent diagnostic criteria of clinical, radiologic, and microbiologic findings are required. Despite meeting all 3 criteria for diagnosis, not every patient is a candidate for …
The Cascading Effect Of Adverse Childhood Experiences And The Urgency For A Trauma-Informed Approach, Whitney Lovett
The Cascading Effect Of Adverse Childhood Experiences And The Urgency For A Trauma-Informed Approach, Whitney Lovett
Integrated Studies
Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) refer to any traumatic event from birth to 18 years of age that can have negative effects to a child’s development and health. Any form of abuse, neglect, or household dysfunction constitutes an adverse childhood experience initiating immediate and long-term outcomes. Reoccurring and prolonged exposures to adversity can turn into toxic stress. These experiences take a toll on children’s brain development, growth, immune and other regulatory systems, learning, behavior, and genetic outcomes. Although ACEs are common, some populations may be more susceptible to adversities. Families who have limited economic advantages and histories of ACEs, racism, and …

The immune system is regulated by a complex set of genetic, molecular, and cellular interactions. Rapid advances in the study of immunity and its network of interactions have been boosted by a spectrum of "omics" technologies that have generated huge amounts of data that have reached the status of big data (BD). With recent developments in artificial intelligence (AI), theoretical and clinical breakthroughs could emerge. Analyses of large data sets with AI tools will allow the formulation of new testable hypotheses open new research avenues and provide innovative strategies for regulating immunity and treating immunological diseases. This includes diagnosis and …

Dog burials are known from Egypt from the Predynastic period from c. 3500 BC onward and continue into the Roman era. Different burials have been interpreted in a variety of ways: companion/pet/working animals, associated with divinities, and as guardians. This paper presents a unique interment of a single human and a group of dogs found in the cemetery of Deir el-Banat in the Fayum (Egypt), which can be interpreted as either a religio-magical protective deposit for the cemetery, or a religio-medical one, involving the sacrifice of several animals.

Nasally inoculated influenza cases reported milder symptoms and shed lower viral RNA load in exhaled breath aerosols (EBA) than people with classic influenza-like illness including fever, in a previous study. Whether nasally inoculated influenza is representative of mild natural influenza infection, the majority of natural infections, is unknown. Here, we extend our previous analyses to include a broader range of community-acquired influenza cases. Previously, we reported on two groups: (A) volunteers intranasally inoculated with a dose of 5.5 log10TCID50 of influenza A/Wisconsin/67/2005 (H3N2) and (B) cases with cough and sore throat plus fever or a positive rapid antigen test recruited …

We sought to disentangle effects of the components of a peer-education intervention on self-reported injection risk behaviors among people who inject drugs (n = 560) in Philadelphia, US. We examined 226 egocentric groups/networks randomized to receive (or not) the intervention. Peer-education training consisted of two components delivered to the intervention network index individual only: (1) an initial training and (2) “booster” training sessions during 6- and 12-month follow up visits. In this secondary data analysis, using inverse-probability-weighted log-binomial mixed effects models, we estimated the effects of the components of the network-level peer-education intervention upon subsequent risk behaviors. This included contrasting …

Lyme Disease Ecology In The Eastern United States: An Overview, Aliya C. Aguirre
Lyme Disease Ecology In The Eastern United States: An Overview, Aliya C. Aguirre
Biology Student Work
Lyme disease is the most common vector-borne disease in the United States of America (USA). In North America, Lyme disease is caused by Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto (s.s.) and vectored by the blacklegged tick, Ixodes scapularis. Historically, Lyme disease has been primarily restricted to the northeastern United States, despite I. scapularis occurring throughout the entire eastern region. There are genetically unique northern and southern populations of I. scapularis. The differences between these two populations have been hypothesized to be driving the difference in Lyme disease case incidence in the northeastern and southeastern United States. This review will examine …
