Impact Of Human Population On Zoonotic Disease Transmission: A 22-Year Review (2000-2022) Of Rabies, Lyme Disease, And Hansen’S Disease In Florida, Margaret Kahl Jan 2024

Impact Of Human Population On Zoonotic Disease Transmission: A 22-Year Review (2000-2022) Of Rabies, Lyme Disease, And Hansen’S Disease In Florida, Margaret Kahl

Theses & ETDs

The Earth thrives under One-Health, a balance between humans, other animals, and environmental health. Zoonotic diseases can impact this equilibrium. In this retrospective review, I explore the impact of human population growth on zoonotic disease transmission, focusing on rabies, Lyme disease, and Hansen’s disease incidences in Florida from 2000-2022. While existing literature acknowledges various drivers that influence zoonotic disease transmission rates, limited attention has been directed toward the specific correlation with human population growth. Correlation and regression analyses were applied utilizing surveillance data from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention and the Florida Department of Health, alongside demographic data …

Effects Of American Colonialism On The Hawaiian Islands, Sydney Lingenfelser Jan 2024

Effects Of American Colonialism On The Hawaiian Islands, Sydney Lingenfelser

Theses & ETDs

In this Thesis I will discuss the Environmental and Cultural Effects of the colonization by the United States on the Hawaiian Islands. By reviewing large industries such as the Military and Tourism industries, I examine the rules and laws set in place since the “discovery” of the Hawaiian Islands in 1778 that led to a change in the culture and lifestyle of Hawai’i. Actions such as land privatization led to massive areas of land to be developed for both military and tourism purposes which led to massive development of infrastructure and in turn, a loss of biodiversity and native life. …

Comparing Population-Level Humoral And Cellular Immunity To Sars-Cov-2 In Bangalore, India, Anup Malani, Jayashree Aiyar, Andrea Sant, Neha Kamran, Manoj Mohanan, Saloni Taneja, Bartek Woda, Wanran Zhao, Anu Acharya

Articles

Two types of immunity, humoral and cellular, offer protection against COVID. Humoral protection, contributed by circulating neutralizing antibodies, can provide immediate protection but decays more quickly than cellular immunity and can lose effectiveness in the face of mutation and drift in the SARS‑ CoV‑2 spike protein. Therefore, population‑level seroprevalence surveys used to estimate population‑ level immunity may underestimate the degree to which a population is protected against COVID. In early 2021, before India began its vaccination campaign, we tested for humoral and cellular immunity to SARS‑Cov‑2 in representative samples of slum and non‑slum populations in Bangalore, India. We found that …

Computational And Experimental Analysis Of Silica Nanoparticles Under Dc And Ac Electric Fields Using A Self-Induced Back Action Actuated Nanopore Electrophoresis (Sane) Sensor, Homayoun Asadzadeh, Scott Renkes, George Alexandrakis, Minjun Kim, Scott Turpin Jan 2024

Computational And Experimental Analysis Of Silica Nanoparticles Under Dc And Ac Electric Fields Using A Self-Induced Back Action Actuated Nanopore Electrophoresis (Sane) Sensor, Homayoun Asadzadeh, Scott Renkes, George Alexandrakis, Minjun Kim, Scott Turpin

Bioengineering Dissertations - Archive

In this dissertation I have studied a novel single-molecule nanosensor that integrates a Solid-State Nanopore (SSNP), milled in silicon nitride with a Double Nanohole (DNH) nanoaperture, milled in gold. This device leverages Self-Induced Back-Action (SIBA) for optical trapping with ssNP electrical sensing and is called the SIBA-Actuated Nanopore Electrophoresis (SANE) sensor. My lab has previously shown that simultaneous acquisition of bimodal optical and direct current (DC) electrical signatures enables more detailed characterization of nanoscopic analytes compared to using electrical data alone, which are typically collected by ssNP sensors. In this work I have first studied by COMSOL Multiphysics simulations the …

Resilience And Compassion Fatigue Among Medical Nurses In Acute Care, Angela M. Vallier Jan 2024

Resilience And Compassion Fatigue Among Medical Nurses In Acute Care, Angela M. Vallier

Nursing Dissertations - Archive

Compassion fatigue impacts nurses of all backgrounds and specialties. This non-experimental, descriptive, correlational study design involved three research questions that examined medical registered nurses’ association between resilience and compassion fatigue. This study examined organizational factors, work-system factors, and individual factors that are influential to compassion fatigue and resilience among nurses working in general medicine units.

The Compassion Fatigue Short Scale® and Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale® were used to measure compassion fatigue and resilience among the participants in this study. The study included 98 registered nurses who worked in general medicine units in Southeast Texas. The results indicated a negative significant correlation …

Multidimensional Data Visualization And Synchronization For Revealing Hidden Pandemic Information, Qi Zhang, Nikhil Maram Jan 2024

Multidimensional Data Visualization And Synchronization For Revealing Hidden Pandemic Information, Qi Zhang, Nikhil Maram

Faculty Publications - Information Technology

Visualization is integral to uncovering hidden information in data and providing users with intuitive feedback for decision-making. Data visualization is crucial for transforming complex data into actionable insights across various domains. In recent years, coronavirus disease vaccines have become increasingly available to much of the population. However, the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) often fails to consider multidimensional coronavirus pandemic data from a side-by-side perspective, limiting the ability of medical professionals and individuals to compare and interact with comprehensive data visualizations. Effectively displaying coronavirus and vaccination data collected from multiple sources is essential for interpreting pandemic transmission patterns …

Survey Of Occupational Hygiene Professional Practice In Spanish-Speaking Countries, Thomas P. Fuller, Jennifer Peterson Jan 2024

Survey Of Occupational Hygiene Professional Practice In Spanish-Speaking Countries, Thomas P. Fuller, Jennifer Peterson

Faculty Publications – Health Sciences

Professional credentialing schemes based on experience and examination are used to clarify the scope and required competencies associated with the practice of a profession. National occupational hygiene (OH) credentials developed in 17 nations have been recognized by the International Occupational Hygiene Association (IOHA) to meet or exceed the requirements of a model certification program. To date, there is no credentialing or certification scheme for occupational hygienists in Spanish-speaking regions. To fill this void, a new credentialing body has been created named the Iberoamerican Board of Occupational Hygiene (JIHO). As a first step to the development of a certification exam for …

Case Report: Streptococcus Gallolyticus Prosthetic Joint Infection, Jeffrey Dickerson, Liza Salloum, Amaan Sheikh, Madhukanth Reddy, Bryan Youree

North Texas GME Research Forum 2024

Streptococcus gallolyticus, part of the Streptococcus bovis/Streptococcus equinus complex (SBSEC) formerly known as Group D streptococi, is strongly associated with colorectal cancer and infective endocarditis. Its appearance in septic arthritis is rare, and its role in septic arthritis has not been as thoroughly investigated. We present the case of a 69 year old male with a history of atrial fibrillation and hypertension who was admitted to our hospital after undergoing a right knee replacement in 2023 with a chief complaint of right knee pain, fever, and chills. Arthrocentesis and blood cultures were performed, and the patient was started on …

Systemic Storm: Multi-Organ Septic Emboli In Acute Aortic Valve Endocarditis, Jilpa Shah, Akshaj Pole, Amnah Andrabi

North Texas GME Research Forum 2024

According to the Infectious Disease Society of America (IDSA), Infective endocarditis (IE) is an infection of the endocardial surface of the native valve, prosthetic heart valve, or an implanted cardiac device such as a permanent pacemaker or a defibrillator. IE is a rare fatal disease with an incidence rate of 3 to 10 cases per 100,000 people, predominantly in males over the age of 50 years in developed countries. Septic emboli are a serious sequelae of infective endocarditis with commonly affecting brain, spleen, kidneys, and lung. Usually, initial management includes tapered long term antibiotics with surgical evaluation for possible valve …
