East Florida Division GME Research Day 2025

Introduction: This case study explores an uncommon triad of encephalitis, ventriculitis, and meningitis complicated by ischemic strokes and seizures in a COVID-19-positive patient. Prior studies suggest that bacterial meningitis and encephalitis can lead to cerebral infarctions due to inflammation and vascular injury.1,2,5 Ventriculitis, in particular, is rarely observed and typically is seen as a severe complication of meningitis, and can be managed with neurosurgical interventions such as CSF shunt placement, ventricular drains, or other intracranial devices.3,4 The simultaneous presentation of all three conditions in a single patient is rare and poses significant challenges from a diagnostic and management standpoint.

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Simplified Education On Respiratory Infections For South Asian Immigrants Parents Of Children 3 Months To 18 Years Of Age., Iman Khanam

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

BACKGROUND: Health literacy has been shown to be a major contributing factor to an individual’s ability to manage symptoms and therefore their health outcomes as well. Data demonstrates that those of South Asian descent tend to lack the health literacy necessary to manage health. Respiratory infections are one of the most common childhood illnesses. It is important that parents understand how to appropriately manage their child’s symptoms.

METHODS: A pre-intervention questionnaire was obtained from participating parents prior to the intervention. The post-intervention questionnaire was obtained at least one week after the intervention. A paired t-test analysis was conducted based on …

Evaluating Saliva Based Glucose Testing For Accessible Diabetes Care In Tanzania, Shannon Dhindsa Jan 2025

Evaluating Saliva Based Glucose Testing For Accessible Diabetes Care In Tanzania, Shannon Dhindsa

Public Health Theses

Background: In Tanzania, limited healthcare infrastructure and reliance on invasive diagnostic methods significantly hinder effective diabetes screening and management. Individuals with diabetes often go undetected and have lower immune systems that make them prone to further infectious complications. Thus, properly managing this chronic condition can prevent additional infectious diseases. Salivary glucose testing offers a non-invasive, innovative alternative with the potential to transform the early detection and management of diabetes, especially in resource-constrained settings.

Design: This cross-sectional study, conducted at Muhimbili National Hospital's Diabetes Clinic in Dar es Salaam, evaluates the feasibility of salivary glucose testing using a colorimetric glucose-oxidase-peroxidase point-of-care …

Disability, Cure, And (Anti)Normativity In Modern And Contemporary Spanish Literature, Martha Engvall Jan 2025

Disability, Cure, And (Anti)Normativity In Modern And Contemporary Spanish Literature, Martha Engvall

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

In my dissertation, I examine the role of disability, diagnosis, and cure in modern and contemporary Spanish novels. In the first three chapters, I show how authors of the late 19th and early 20th century used disability’s relationship to race, gender, and social class to question exclusionary social norms. I analyze critiques of industrialization in Galdós’s Marianela (1878) and Blasco Ibáñez’s Del vivir (1904); examine portrayals of leprosy in Galdós’s Misericordia (1897), Pardo Bazán’s La prueba (1890), Miró’s Del vivir (1904) and El obispo leproso (1926), and Hoyos y Vinent’s El monstruo (1915); and explore connections between disability, sexuality, and …

The Gnda Microprotein Supports Atp Homeostasis In Escherichia Coli During Heat Shock, Jessica Jayne Mohsen Jan 2025

The Gnda Microprotein Supports Atp Homeostasis In Escherichia Coli During Heat Shock, Jessica Jayne Mohsen

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Same-strand overlapping, or nested, open reading frames (ORFs) can optimize the information content of size-constrained viral genomes by increasing the number of proteins expressed from a limited nucleotide sequence. However, nested small open reading frames (sORFs) were previously omitted from prokaryotic and eukaryotic genome annotations. It was therefore surprising when numerous nested sORFs were recently discovered in bacteria and eukaryotes. Our case study of the GndA microprotein in Escherichia coli provides evidence of an emerging model that overlapping genes can be expressed from bacterial genomes to contribute to cellular fitness. GndA interacts with the electron transport chain and ATP synthase …

Epidemiologic And Immunologic Characterization Of The Post-Acute Sequelae Of Covid-19, Christine Marie Miller Jan 2025

Epidemiologic And Immunologic Characterization Of The Post-Acute Sequelae Of Covid-19, Christine Marie Miller

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Since its emergence in late 2019, SARS-CoV-2 has infected over 15 million people—and the number continues to rise. The global impact of this novel coronavirus has been profound, reshaping not only public health infrastructure but also our understanding of human biology. The full extent of the virus’s effects on the immune system remains incompletely understood and will likely take years to fully unravel. What is already evident, however, is that SARS-CoV-2 uniquely modulates both innate and adaptive immunity, with consequences that span the developmental spectrum—from fetal and pediatric stages through adulthood. While many individuals recover without overt clinical sequelae, an …

Vaccine-Induced Immunity: Insights Into Sars-Cov-2 And Orthopoxvirus, Valter Monteiro Jan 2025

Vaccine-Induced Immunity: Insights Into Sars-Cov-2 And Orthopoxvirus, Valter Monteiro

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Emerging infectious diseases like SARS-CoV-2 and re-emergent pathogens such asmpox (formally known as monkeypox) have posed substantial challenges to global health, often due to immune escape and antigenic variability. My research addresses these challenges by evaluating and designing vaccine strategies to enhance immune responses and cross-protection, focusing on SARS-CoV-2 variants and members of the Orthopoxvirus family. The central aim of my research is to understand and overcome limitations in immune responses to antigenically variable pathogens. My studies focus on humoral responses to SARS-CoV-2 variants through targeted booster regimens, exploring cross-protective immunity in Orthopoxvirus vaccines, and testing new mRNA vaccines to …

Nurses Current State Of Knowledge On Prion Disease, Chelsy Grande

Nursing | Senior Theses

Background: Prion disease is a rare neurodegenerative disorder that affects the central nervous system. Creutzfeldt-Jakob prion disease rapidly progresses, caused by an infectious pathogen that misfolds the normal prion protein which results in an accumulation of cellular prion proteins. Unfortunately, there is no cure for Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, only palliative care to provide support as the disease progresses. There is a gap in providing support for the patients and their families due to the limited understanding from the nurses, which can lead to the unmet needs of patients and their families. The purpose of the study is to evaluate what nurses …

Unconcerned And Undertrained: The Indiana Jail Death Epidemic And The Need For Expanded Jail Officer Training, Sadie Rothrock

Indiana Law Journal

On October 4, 2018, Jerod Draper lost his life after two hours of torture by Harrison County jail officers. While in custody of the jail and suffering from an overdose, Jerod Draper was placed in a restraint chair for two hours and tased seven times in fifteen minutes. Jerod Draper’s story is one of the many stories demonstrating how a jail death epidemic is occurring throughout Indiana. In this Note, I discuss the history of incarceration in the United States, the statutes under which families of jail death victims can sue, and Indiana’s jail death problem. I then highlight Indiana’s …

Educators’ Perceptions Of The Components That Influence Student Behavior And The Impact Restorative Practices And Community Circles Have On Improving Overall Well-Being In Students, Catherine Dulovic

Selected Full Text Dissertations, 2011-

Restorative Practices have been utilized in many schools as an alternative to traditional disciplinary methods. Traditional methods such as Out of School Suspension (OSS) and In-School Suspension (ISS) can lead to feelings of isolation and impact students’ attitudes towards school and community. Community Circles are often used in conjunction with Restorative Practices to support the development of the whole child, build relationships, promote positive discipline, and create a trauma sensitive environment that includes mindfulness practices. The current research examined educators’ perspective of the components that influence student behavior and the impact Restorative Practices and Community Circles have on improving behavior …

Elevated Neutrophil-To-Lymphocyte Ratios In Schizophrenia: Insights From A Precision Medicine Cohort (Preprint), Alec J. Pupo, Connor J. Stinson, Chinwendu Madukwe, Stephanie H. Felgoise

Internal Medicine Resident Research

Systemic inflammation has been increasingly implicated in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), a readily available marker of systemic inflammation, has not been thoroughly investigated in large, demographically-matched schizophrenia cohorts. Using data from the All of Us Research Program, we analyzed participants with schizophrenia (n = 396) matched to controls (n = 396) by sex, race, and age. NLR was calculated as the ratio of each participant’s median neutrophil count to median lymphocyte count across all available measurements, excluding extreme values (NLR > 7). Distribution normality was assessed using the Shapiro–Wilk test, and group differences were evaluated with the …

Don't Let Them In: Our Vampire Stories In The French Quarter, Sela Ricketts Jan 2025

Don't Let Them In: Our Vampire Stories In The French Quarter, Sela Ricketts

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is an exploration of vampires in New Orleans. The reason I have chosen to include the word “Our” in the title is because we created the stories that I am studying. We created, perpetuated, changed, and eventually monetized them. Throughout this paper I discuss how the vampire came to New Orleans and how that same vampire shows up in New Orleans folklore. Then I discuss how the vampire made the jump from urban legend to pop culture. In doing that it gained “humanity”. They were still monstrous, but it was enough humanity to acquire regional identity, a southern …

Investigating The Extent To Which Diet-Induced Obesity Alters Gene Expression In Hematopoietic Stem And Progenitor Cells Following Influenza Immunization In Mice, Chaitanya Lahari Chowdary Pathipati

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Vaccines are a vital tool in preventing diseases, but their effectiveness varies depending on factors like diet and body weight. Obese individuals often experience reduced vaccine protection, as seen with influenza vaccines, where they have twice the risk of getting the flu compared to healthy-weight individuals after vaccination. This study aims to understand why obesity weakens vaccine effectiveness, focusing on the role of blood-forming stem cells in the bone marrow, known as hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs). These cells are crucial for producing immune cells that defend the body against infections. Previous research has shown that diet-induced obesity alters …
