The Intersection Of Regulation, Quality Care Delivery, And Ethics And Compliance: Look Carefully Before Crossing!, David R. Hoffman, Ilene Warner-Maron Jan 2025

The Intersection Of Regulation, Quality Care Delivery, And Ethics And Compliance: Look Carefully Before Crossing!, David R. Hoffman, Ilene Warner-Maron

Saint Louis University Journal of Health Law & Policy

Quality and compliant care delivery in nursing homes remains elusive. Four main interests are currently misaligned, thereby putting nursing home residents at risk of harm. Without a clearly defined commitment to quality and compliant care and alignment of these interests, nursing home residents will remain vulnerable to severe harm.

The first key interest concerns nursing home ownership and management. Currently, over seventy percent of nursing homes are owned by for-profit entities. Previous ownership models, including non-profit, religious-based, and county-owned facilities, have largely closed or transitioned to for-profit entities. The shift in ownership significantly impacts quality and compliant care delivery. Unfortunately, …

Limitations Of Secular Values In Constitutions Of The Kingdom Of Thailand: A Critical Study Of The Concepts Of Rights And Liberty, Chayanin Nuisin Jan 2025

Limitations Of Secular Values In Constitutions Of The Kingdom Of Thailand: A Critical Study Of The Concepts Of Rights And Liberty, Chayanin Nuisin

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This dissertation aims to examine the limitations of secular values within the context of all twenty constitutions of the Kingdom of Thailand. The analysis focuses in particular on rights and liberties as core secular values. The study considers their origins, development, and the obstacles that have hindered the realization of rights and liberties in Thai society. The findings suggest that secular values—especially modern concepts of rights and liberties—emerged during the Reformation period under King Rama V, when Siam sought to adjust itself to the conditions of modernity. This was a period marked by strong Western influence, which brought with it …

Investigating The Plasticity And Role Of Peripherally Derived Cd4 T Cells In The Brain At Homeostasis, Tomomi Marie Yoshida Jan 2025

Investigating The Plasticity And Role Of Peripherally Derived Cd4 T Cells In The Brain At Homeostasis, Tomomi Marie Yoshida

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Specialized immune cells residing in tissues orchestrate diverse biological functions through communication with parenchymal cells. The contribution of the innate immune compartment in the meninges and central nervous system (CNS) is well-characterized, however, whether T cells as part of the adaptive immune system reside in the brain and are involved in homeostasis is poorly understood. Here, we identify that the subfornical organ (SFO) region of the brain is a nucleus for parenchymal T cells in the steady-state brain in both mice and humans. Using unbiased transcriptomics, we found that these extravascular T cells in the mouse brain are distinct from …

Host Defense Inside & Outside Of The Immune System: Modeling Antimicrobial Immunity By Gbps, Zhongyu Yuan Jan 2025

Host Defense Inside & Outside Of The Immune System: Modeling Antimicrobial Immunity By Gbps, Zhongyu Yuan

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Traditional views of host defense often focus on antibody-mediated neutralization, cytotoxic T-cell plus NK-cell-mediated killing, and phagocytic activities by cell populations originating in the bone marrow as part of the classical immune system. Additional effector activities, however, also operate in non-immune cells which compose the stroma or parenchyma of host tissues. These latter cell populations often mobilize antimicrobial activities in response to cytokines such as type II IFN (IFN-gamma; IFN-) against a wide variety of intracellular pathogens.

Among the most prominent IFN--stimulated genes are a family of immune dynamin-like GTPases termed the Guanylate Binding Proteins (GBPs). GBPs are widely expressed …

Epidemiology and Environmental Health Faculty Publications

Limited research has examined the possible synergistic interrelationships between serious bacterial infections (SBIs) of the heart (i.e., endocarditis), bone, spine, brain, or joints (e.g., osteomylelitis) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections. We examined whether syndemic interactions existed between SBI, HCV, and substance-use-related factors in rural communities, hypothesizing that injection-mediated risks elevated the likelihood for both SBIs and HCV infections, which could be exacerbated by synergistic biological–biological or biological and social interactions. We calculated the prevalence ratios (PRs) of past-year SBI associated with each risk factor in separate models. Effect modification among significant risk factors was assessed using multiplicative interaction. Among …

The Impact Of Veterinary Stewardship Program Implementations On Backyard Chicken Farming In Rural Georgia, Lauren Ashley Herrin Jan 2025

The Impact Of Veterinary Stewardship Program Implementations On Backyard Chicken Farming In Rural Georgia, Lauren Ashley Herrin

Kentucky Journal of Equine, Agriculture, & Natural Resources Law

In this article, Lauren Ashley Herrin examines the impacts of new FDA veterinary stewardship regulations on backyard chicken farming in rural Georgia. She explains that requiring prescriptions for previously over-the-counter antibiotics disproportionately harms low-income and rural communities by limiting access to affordable veterinary care, worsening risks of disease spread and public health threats. Herrin argues for policy approaches that balance antimicrobial resistance concerns with the realities of rural accessibility. She proposes solutions such as telehealth veterinary consultations, scholarship programs to encourage rural veterinary practice, and expanding prescriptive authority for veterinary technicians to ensure sustainable animal health care in underserved areas

Rethinking The Image Of Women In Hototogisu, Duantem Krisdathanont Jan 2025

Rethinking The Image Of Women In Hototogisu, Duantem Krisdathanont

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

In Hototogisu, Tokutomi Roka (1868–1927) utilizes the motif of tuberculosis to explore and illustrate the familial, societal, and national dynamics of the Meiji period, as well as to critique the subordinate role of women within the family structure. This study aims to analyze how women are represented within the narrative and how tuberculosis functions as a literary device to underscore their perceived inferiority. By applying a historical perspective, the research demonstrates that tuberculosis symbolizes both the physical and social vulnerability imposed upon women. This symbolic representation prompts the female protagonist to question traditional Japanese values and adopt Western ideals, …

Environmental Pollutants: A Risk For Premature Aging And Transgenerational Toxicity, Alex Kathleen Daniels Jan 2025

Environmental Pollutants: A Risk For Premature Aging And Transgenerational Toxicity, Alex Kathleen Daniels

Masters Theses

"This thesis aims to identify interactions between C. elegans’ reproductive system and global pollutants such as microplastics, HgCl₂, nicotine, and pesticides. Human exposure to these pollutants and their effect on reproduction can be analyzed using the C. elegans as a model organism. Systematic analysis of matricidal hatching, progeny production, germline apoptosis, and lifespan assays determined effects on reproduction and reproductive aging. Through my experiments, it was determined that no significant effects were produced from the selected polystyrene, polyethylene, vape juice, nicotine hemi sulfate salt, imidacloprid, or glyphosate regarding matricidal hatching or progeny production. I confirmed that HgCl₂ induced significant effects …

Improving Telehealth Education And Training: A Needs Assessment Of Healthcare Providers And Trainees, Conor Duffy

Theses and Dissertations

Telehealth utilization has increased dramatically since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. There are many positive impacts of this shift to telehealth, including increasing access to care and reducing patient burden. However, healthcare providers report several consistent challenges that limit their ability to deliver telehealth, such as effective communication, technological difficulties, and difficulty performing physical examinations. To address these concerns, it is necessary to integrate telehealth education and training into healthcare professional training programs and healthcare systems. While many institutions have implemented telehealth education and training since the start of the pandemic, there is little consistency in the content, duration, …

Chemotherapy treatment-related side effects are common and increase the risk of suboptimal outcomes. Exercise interventions during cancer treatment improve self-reported physical functioning, fatigue, anxiety, and depression, but it is unclear whether these interventions improve important clinical outcomes, such as chemotherapy relative dose intensity. The National Cancer Institute funded the Exercise and Nutrition to Improve Cancer Treatment-Related Outcomes (ENICTO) Consortium to address this knowledge gap. This article describes the mechanisms hypothesized to underpin intervention effects on clinically relevant treatment outcomes, briefly outlines each project’s distinct research aims, summarizes the scope and organizational structure of ENICTO, and provides an overview of the …

Public-Private Partnerships After Murthy V. Missouri, Danielle Keats Citron, Jeff Stautberg Jan 2025

Public-Private Partnerships After Murthy V. Missouri, Danielle Keats Citron, Jeff Stautberg

Indiana Law Journal

This Essay considers the future of public-private collaboration in the wake of the Murthy v. Missouri litigation, which cast doubt on the constitutionality of information sharing between federal agencies and social media companies. The litigation has been a good and a bad teacher. On one hand, the lower court decisions made legible the risks to free expression, accountability, transparency, and intimate privacy posed by government-industry collaborations. On the other hand, the litigation chilled information sharing between federal agencies, state election officials, and social media companies at the moment that such collaboration could and should help protect against foreign malign influence …

Journal Articles: Epidemiology

INTRODUCTION: The 2013-2016 Western African outbreak of the Ebola virus disease (EVD), the largest recorded outbreak since the discovery of Ebola virus (EBOV) in 1976, destabilised local health systems and left thousands of survivors at risk for postacute sequelae, including vision-threatening uveitis. In an EVD survivor with severe panuveitis, the detection of persistent EBOV in the aqueous humour, long after clearance of acute viremia, focused clinical and research attention on the host-EBOV interaction in the unique terrain of ocular immune privilege. Despite the recognition that uveitis is common and consequential in EVD survivors, our understanding of pathogenesis is extremely limited, …

Cryptococcal Meningitis In A Patient With Multiple Sclerosis On Fingolimod, Syed Hassan Amir, Teena Mathew

North Texas Research Forum 2025

Background: There are a host of pathogens that thrive only when the host is weakened enough to be susceptible – Cryptococcus is one such organism that causes fatal meningitis, primarily in HIV patients. Those immunocompromised by other means are also susceptible. Among them, patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) pose a significant challenge as what may initially be considered an MS flare could mask a serious underlying infection. Objective: This case study discusses an MS patient on Fingolimod, an immunosuppressant, that likely made them vulnerable to cryptococcal meningitis. Pathogenesis: Cryptococci are encapsulated yeast that enter the body via inhalation of spores …
