Advanced Infection Prevention In Infants, Kenny Le, Osmara Rojas, Vika Lomonosova, Blakelee Waller
Advanced Infection Prevention In Infants, Kenny Le, Osmara Rojas, Vika Lomonosova, Blakelee Waller
SPARK Symposium Presentations
Abstract
Background: Infants are highly susceptible to nosocomial infections like CLABSIs due to underdeveloped immune systems and exposure to medical interventions. These infections significantly threaten health outcomes in the NICU. With national NICU infection rates for 1.1-3.3 lb infants averaging 15%, the study’s 7.1% infection rate indicates mFICare’s potential. Does an educational intervention for caregivers, mobile-enhanced Family-Integrated Care (mFICare), reduce the national average NICU nosocomial infection rate of 15% to 5% compared to the Family-Centered Care’s (FCC) approach?
Methods: Keywords: NICU, infants, intensive care unit, bloodstream, infection, prevention, hospital-acquired infection, theory-of-care, family-integrated care. Databases used for review of literature: CINAHL, …

The Role Of Horizontal Gene Transfer In Antibiotic Resistance Amidst Prevalent Community And Healthcare-Associated Mrsa Rates, Gabrielle Nascimento
The Role Of Horizontal Gene Transfer In Antibiotic Resistance Amidst Prevalent Community And Healthcare-Associated Mrsa Rates, Gabrielle Nascimento
Honors College Theses
In recent decades, cases of community-acquired MRSA (CA-MRSA) and healthcare-associated MRSA (HA-MRSA) have been on the rise. The ability of antibiotic resistance to transfer between microorganisms greatly expands its threat to the effective treatment and containment of bacterial infections. The mecA gene is found on a mobile cassette within the Staphylococcal cell and encodes for PBP2a, an alternate version of penicillin-binding protein (PBP) with less binding affinity for β-lactam antibiotics, increasing resistance to the effects of antibiotics. The goal of this research is to investigate the horizontal transfer of the mecA gene between various Staphylococcus species as well as to …
The United States Healthcare System: From Medicare To Post-Pandemic Health Policy, William M. Sage
The United States Healthcare System: From Medicare To Post-Pandemic Health Policy, William M. Sage
Faculty Scholarship
My purpose in this essay is to comment on national health policy in the United States over the past sixty years. My conclusions are less optimistic than what I had hoped when I began my teaching and research career in the 1990s to be able to say in 2025. In particular, the successful expansion of publicly supported health coverage via the passage of the Affordable Care Act (“ACA” or “Obamacare”) in 2010 seems to have triggered -- though I hesitate to say that it caused – a backsliding from broader commitments to clinical performance, population health, and social solidarity that …
Effect Of Paxlovid On Neurodevelopmental Disorder Diagnosis Outcomes In Offspring Of Mothers Infected With Sars-Cov-2 During Pregnancy, Simone Rogers
Effect Of Paxlovid On Neurodevelopmental Disorder Diagnosis Outcomes In Offspring Of Mothers Infected With Sars-Cov-2 During Pregnancy, Simone Rogers
CMC Senior Theses
The onset of the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic brought concern over the effects that this virus would have on pregnancy and fetal outcomes, specifically neurodevelopmental outcomes. Maternal immune activation (MIA), caused by infection during pregnancy, is known to result in neurodevelopmental disorder (NDD) diagnosis in offspring, typically autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). This effect has already been observed in mothers who were infected with COVID-19 during pregnancy. However, in 2023, Paxlovid, the COVID-19 antiviral drug, became available to patients experiencing symptoms of the virus, including pregnant women. Consequently, this study seeks to determine whether the risk of …
Predictive Policing In Practice: A Case Study Of Chicago's Strategic Subject List, Stella Cheng
Predictive Policing In Practice: A Case Study Of Chicago's Strategic Subject List, Stella Cheng
CMC Senior Theses
Technological advancements in big data and algorithmic modeling have contributed to the rise of advanced predictive policing techniques. Law enforcement agencies utilize these tools to predict and prevent crime before it occurs. However, these techniques have been the subject of extensive ethical debates, particularly regarding their potential to reinforce racial biases. This thesis provides a historical overview and analysis of a prominent example of people-based predictive policing: the Chicago Police Department’s Strategic Subject List (SSL) program. The SSL program revolved around an algorithm designed to predict individuals' risk of involvement in a shooting, using indicators such as co-arrest networks, age, …
Faltered States: The Rise, Fall, And Containment Of Psychedelic Science In The United States, Baxter Brew
Faltered States: The Rise, Fall, And Containment Of Psychedelic Science In The United States, Baxter Brew
CMC Senior Theses
This thesis traces the history of psychedelic science in the United States and its implications for policymaking. In the postwar period, psychedelic researchers were enabled by a unique convergence of optimism in medical science and structural flexibility. But their hope blinded them to the deeper tensions of their field. As institutions grew increasingly rigid and risk-averse, the space for psychedelics began to close. Some scientists responded by fortifying the walls around them, developing socially and professionally acceptable research methods. Others tried to escape these walls entirely. But neither approach could prevent psychedelics from being squeezed out of formal inquiry. Yet …
How Can Tailored Entrepreneurship Training Effectively Support The Emancipation Of People With Disabilities In Ireland?, Ahsan Habib
Doctoral
This thesis investigates the impact of tailored entrepreneurship training on the perceived emancipation of aspiring entrepreneurs with disabilities in Ireland. This community is significantly underrepresented in the labour market, yet it is hindered in accessing self-employment opportunities due to a lack of specific training and limited access to necessary resources. Furthermore, there is a dearth of knowledge in academic literature addressing the influence of tailored entrepreneurship programmes targeted at people with disabilities. To address this knowledge gap, this study gathered data from in-depth interviews with 21 key informants (including nine participants from TU Dublin’s entrepreneurship training programme, five representatives from …

Mapping Horizon Limits Using Topographical Reference Points For Determining Pre-Columbian Circum-Caribbean Indigenous Interisland Contact Routes, Al M. Rocca
SSGS Faculty Publications and Presentations
Existing archaeological studies have suggested an extensive network of ongoing human travel operated between the Bahamas, the Greater Antilles, and the Lesser Antilles before and at the time of European contact in 1492. Additional evidence prompts some scholars to propose expanded contact of these areas with Mesoamerica, the rest of Central America, the northern coast of South America, and the Florida peninsula, resulting in an interconnected circum-Caribbean region. A variety of economic, political, and social influences stimulated this desire for sea and ocean movement, including migration, trading, tribute, raiding, and social connectedness. Geographic and oceanographic factors such as distance between …

Strategies To Address The Growing Impact Of The Antibiotic Resistance Crisis, Rina Balter
The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences
As time progresses, more bacterial strains are becoming resistant to the antibiotics developed to treat them. Impeding such intractable infections should be a major clinical priority, as previously treatable diseases have begun to incur a fatality rate that will escalate catastrophically unless it is halted. This research paper explores relevant information regarding the advances in developing alternative strategies to antibiotics to combat antimicrobial resistant (AMR) bacteria, within the context of clinical application. Recognizing the profound impact antimicrobial resistance (AMR) will have on patient health enables the implementation of proactive measures to curb the expanding prevalence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) pathogens. This …

Functional Characterization Of Vago In Black Tiger Shrimp Penaeus Monodon Ikk-Nf-Κb Signaling Pathway Against Viral Infection, Zittipong Nanakorn
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Cytokines serve as key regulators in innate antiviral defense. In crustaceans, research on cytokine-mediated immunity remains limited. A previous study in Penaeus monodon has demonstrated that PmVago proteins exhibit cytokine-like function by acting through the inhibitor of kappa B kinase-nuclear factor κB (IKK-NF-κB) cascade to defend against white spot syndrome virus (WSSV). In this study, five PmVago isoforms were identified, each showing differential transcriptional responses to pathogen challenges. Among them, PmVago1 and PmVago4 exhibited strong antiviral responses against WSSV infection. RNA interference of PmVago1 and PmVago4 increased shrimp susceptibility to WSSV infection with enhanced viral replication. Their suppression also disrupted …

Immunoinformatics-Based Design And In Vitro Expression Analysis Of A Multi-Epitope Vaccine Against African Swine Fever Virus, Dhithya Venkateswaran
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
African swine fever (ASF) is a lethal haemorrhagic disease affecting domestic and wild pigs, causing severe economic losses globally. The absence of an effective vaccine has hindered ASF control, as traditional approaches are challenged by the virus’s genetic complexity and immune evasion mechanisms. In this study, we employed immunoinformatics to design a multi-epitope vaccine (MEV) against African Swine Fever Virus (ASFV), targeting conserved viral proteins—B646L (p72), CP204L (p30), E183L (p54), and EP402R (CD2v). Antigenic and non-allergenic BL and HL epitopes were selected and assembled with appropriate adjuvant and linkers to construct the MEV. No CTL epitopes were included, as they …

Genomic Characterization Of Streptococcus Agalactiae And Streptococcus Suis Isolated From Diseased Snakeskin Gourami (Trichopodus Pectoralis), Surawit Chueahiran
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
This study investigates severe, recurrent mortality outbreaks in farmed snakeskin gourami (Trichopodus pectoralis) in central Thailand between 2021 and 2023. Characterized by exophthalmos and systemic hemorrhage, these incidents prompted an investigation to identify causative agents, assess antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and explore genomic adaptation. Bacterial isolates from moribund fish in Samut Sakhon province were identified via MALDI-TOF MS and 16S rRNA sequencing, followed by whole-genome sequencing (Illumina HiSeq) and comparative pan-genomic analysis. Two primary pathogens, Streptococcus agalactiae and Streptococcus suis, were confirmed as causative agents of acute bacterial septicemia, occurring in both single and co-infections. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that S. suis …

Evaluation Of Leptospirosis Vaccine Efficacy After Modifications Of N-Linked Glycosylation In Liga Mrna Vaccines., Rampapat Phaetthayanan
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Leptospirosis, caused by pathogenic Leptospira species, is a widespread zoonotic disease, particularly prevalent in developing countries in tropical areas. Commercially available bacterins have several limitations. A previous study developed a messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccine encoding the carboxy-terminal domain 7-13 of LigA (LigAc) that was expressed with glycosylation in mammalian cells and elicited high humoral immune response in a hamster model but failed to provide protection against lethal challenge. To improve the protective efficacy, this study aimed to develop LigAc-mRNA vaccines with minimal glycosylation. Three mRNA constructs were developed based on two strategies: modifying the potential N-glycosylation sites (from asparagine to …

Investigating Non-Functional Overreaching In Special Operations Tactical Training, Jeremy Alan Ross
Investigating Non-Functional Overreaching In Special Operations Tactical Training, Jeremy Alan Ross
Theses and Dissertations--Rehabilitation Sciences
Special Operations Forces (SOF) tactical training requires high levels of physical performance and psychological resilience. This training is often characterized by extreme temperatures and environments, extremely high levels of physical activity and large caloric deficits. As such, SOF personnel follow intense strength and conditioning (S&C) programs to enhance a wide range of athletic abilities. Such programs rely on a balance between training stress and recovery to allow for gradual improvement in physical ability over time, however it is unknown how to quantify tactical training stress in the context of a training program. This dissertation explores evidence related to how this …

Exploring The Effects Of Resource Salience On Perceptions Of Social Support And Belongingness In Undergraduate Students, Arya C. Johnson, Karen Z. Naufel
Honors College Theses
In recent years, mental health has been a rising concern among college students (Worsley et al., 2022). One method to mitigate stress and raise levels of mental health is social support, which is support derived from relationships or the environment (Zee & Bolger, 2019). Social support presents in different forms, such as visible social support, or support directly given to and acknowledged by the recipient, and invisible social support, or support indirectly given to and unacknowledged by the recipient. Another method to mitigate stress is belongingness, which is the feeling that one is an intrinsic part of their environment (Hagerty …
Occupational Therapy’S Role In Enhancing Awareness And Treatment Of Pelvic Floor Dysfunction In Women’S Health, Nicole Gentry
Occupational Therapy’S Role In Enhancing Awareness And Treatment Of Pelvic Floor Dysfunction In Women’S Health, Nicole Gentry
Occupational Therapy Capstones
Background: There are a variety of reasons that pelvic floor dysfunction can occur in women throughout their life, however, pelvic floor therapy is a minimally invasive and a holistic treatment option that can make significant differences (Cozean & Cozean, 2016; Moody & Fashokun, 2021; Wallace et al., 2019). Pelvic floor therapists can treat and provide interventions to help women manage symptoms associated with pelvic floor dysfunction. Currently, there is limited research on the correlation between pelvic floor dysfunction and recurrent vaginal and urinary infections. However, research suggests that recurrent infections can lead to inflammation, high muscle tone, increased tissue sensitivity, …
