Forgiveness Freedom and the Inmate Issue:
It is no secret that the United States has a mass incarceration problem. The war on drugs, traffic violations, and the Three Strikes Law, are just pieces of the systems being used to repeatedly place people behind bars. What we are facing now as a society is the repercussions of reintegrating under educated, digitally literate, mentally abandoned individuals back into society. In addition to post jail operatives like parole fees, fines and probation scheduling are re-sentencing these individuals into a society they no longer relate to, that socially struggle to adapt to and that …

Applying Modern Immunology To The Plague Of Ancient Athens, Juhi C. Patel
Applying Modern Immunology To The Plague Of Ancient Athens, Juhi C. Patel
Pursuit - The Journal of Undergraduate Research at The University of Tennessee
During the 5th century BCE, ancient Athens and Sparta were involved in a major war during which an epidemic disease broke out in Athens, claiming the lives of a substantial part of the population. Although the ancient Greek historian Thucydides provides a first-hand account of the symptoms of the plague, modern historians have not been able to definitively identify the pathogen that caused the deadly epidemic. In 1994, a burial tomb of Athens was unearthed that unveiled the likely remains of plague victims. In 2005, scientists conducted molecular testing on the dental remains and used suicide PCR to compare …

The Adaptor Protein P62 Mediates Ebv Lmp1 Signal Transduction, Ayrianna Sparks-Wallace, Shunbin Ning
Appalachian Student Research Forum
Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) is well known to manipulate the host ubiquitin machinery to facilitate its latent persistence and oncogenesis, exemplified by LMP1 signal transduction that activates multiple transcription factors, including NFκB, AP1, and IRF7/IRF4, which promote cell survival and outgrowth, and control immune response and inflammation. It is therefore vital to delineate the detailed mechanisms underlying LMP1 signal transduction for understanding EBV-mediated oncogenesis. p62 (also called SQSTM1, Sequestosome 1) is a ubiquitin sensor and a signal transducing adaptor that interacts with TRAF6 and facilitates the recruitment of ubiquitinated signal intermediators for the activation of NFκB and AP1 in diverse contexts. …

Madam Protein Decreases Microsporidia Attachment To Host Cells, Cindy L. Barrett, Cheryl Moore, James Russell Hayman
Appalachian Student Research Forum
Microsporidia are an obligate, intracellular fungal pathogen that can cause devastating, disseminating infections in the immunocompromised. Because of the limitations of current medications, microsporidia’s abundant presence in the environment, and an increasing number of at-risk populations, investigation into decreasing microsporidia infectivity is needed. As an intracellular pathogen, microspridial attachment is a vital first step to infection, and if attachment is reduced, previous work shows that infectivity is mitigated. An in silico analysis of Encephalitozoon intestinalis revealed a predicted protein similar in sequence to ADAM (A Disintegrin And Metalloproteinase) proteins. This predicted protein is termed microsporidia ADAM or MADAM. ADAM proteins …

Rapid Antibiotic Susceptibility Testing Platform For Direct Clinical Samples, Terrance Zhang
Rapid Antibiotic Susceptibility Testing Platform For Direct Clinical Samples, Terrance Zhang
Honors Scholar Theses
Infectious diseases and septicemia are two of the major causes of death in the U.S., necessitating rapid treatment of septic patients with proper, efficacious antibiotics. Unfortunately, the emergence and spread of multidrug-resistant bacteria are continuously being aggravated by an abuse in antibiotic prescription at a clinical and agricultural level. It is known that antibiotic resistance evolves through the sequential accumulation of multiple mutations in bacteria, which is accentuated by prolonged exposure of bacteria to ineffective antibiotics when implementing traditional septicemia treatment. The goal of this project is to develop a novel, easy-to-use AST platform for rapid antimicrobial susceptibility profiling to …

Cancer registries collect unstructured and structured cancer data for surveillance purposes which provide important insights regarding cancer characteristics, treatments, and outcomes. Cancer registry data typically (1) categorize each reportable cancer case or tumor at the time of diagnosis, (2) contain demographic information about the patient such as age, gender, and location at time of diagnosis, (3) include planned and completed primary treatment information, and (4) may contain survival outcomes. As structured data is being extracted from various unstructured sources, such as pathology reports, radiology reports, medical records, and stored for reporting and other needs, the associated information representing a reportable …

How Misinformation And Mistrust Compound The Threat Of Epidemics, William Boyd
Honors Theses
This thesis was conducted to study the effects of misinformation and medical mistrust on the public health field. I use the events of the Chapare Virus outbreak in Bolivia in the summer of 2019 and the public dialogue during that time period to discuss these themes. I used data from market survey's in La Paz, newspaper articles from Página Siete, and Tweets from the time period of the outbreak. My findings suggest that misinformation and medical mistrust affected public health measures, which has major implications for the way the public health field should address future public health events.

Human adenoviruses have many attractive features for gene therapy applications. However, the high prevalence of preexisting immunity against these viruses in general populations worldwide has greatly limited their clinical utility. In addition, the most commonly used human adenovirus, human adenovirus subgroup C serotype 5 (HAd5), when systemically administered, triggers systemic inflammation and toxicity, with the liver being the most severely affected organ. Here, we evaluated the utility and safety of a new low-seroprevalence gorilla adenovirus (GAd; GC46) as a gene transfer vector in mice. Biodistribution studies revealed that systemically administered GAd had a selective and robust lung endothelial cell (EC) …

Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop Blog
Mayday is the international signal of distress, taken from the French word m'aider, meaning "help me!" The day has other meanings, too. Back when the world was quaint, people hung flowers and sweets on neighbors' doors on May 1. Then came the Soviet's parade of military might. In contemporary times, it's the traditional date when students declare where they will go to college (and deposit dollars in good faith). This year, Mayday has taken on yet another meaning: It's now the day when the virus that roared, SARS-COVID 19, has laid waste to all commencement ceremonies, leaving graduating seniors in …

The Censored Bimodal Skew-Normal-Flexible Model With An Application To Plasma Hiv-1 Rna, Germa ́N Moreno-Arenas, Guillermo Mart ́Inez-Flo ́Rez, Artur J. Lemonte
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
We introduce the censored bimodal skew-normal-flexible distribution which can be very useful in dealing with censored data together with bimodality and high (or low) levels of skewness and kurtosis. A simple expression for its moments is derived. The frequentist approach is considered to draw inference, and the traditional maximum likelihood method is employed to estimate the unknown parameters. We also derive the observed information matrix. An application of the new model to the plasma HIV-1 RNA measurement is presented for illustrative purposes.
