Trade And Security Among The Ruins, J. Benton Heath May 2020

Trade And Security Among The Ruins, J. Benton Heath

Duke Journal of Comparative & International Law

The collision of trade and security interests is taking place today in an increasingly fragmented landscape. Governments’ conceptions of their own vital interests are undergoing a rapid transformation as the concept of “national security” expands to encompass issues such as national industrial policy, cybersecurity, and responses to climate change and pandemic disease. At the same time, the system for settling trade disputes is being pulled apart by competing tendencies toward legalism and deformalization. Last year, a landmark decision suggested that international adjudicators could oversee this clash between security and trade, deciding which security interests can override trade rules and which …

In the state of Colorado, a citizen ballot initiative to reintroduce gray wolves (Canis lupus) is eliciting polarization and conflict among multiple stakeholder and interest groups. Given this complex social landscape, we examined the social context surrounding wolf reintroduction in Colorado as of 2019. We used an online survey of 734 Coloradans representative in terms of age and gender, and we sampled from different regions across the state, to examine public beliefs and attitudes related to wolf reintroduction and various wolf management options. We also conducted a content analysis of media coverage on potential wolf reintroduction in 10 major daily …

Shutdown Policies And Worldwide Conflict, Nicolas Berman, Mathieu Couttenier, Nathalie Monnet, Rohit Ticku

ESI Working Papers

We provide real-time evidence on the impact of Covid-19 restrictions policies on conflicts globally. We use daily information on conflict events and government policy responses to limit the spread of coronavirus to study how conflict levels vary following shutdown and lockdown policies. We use the staggered implementation of restriction policies across countries to identify their effect on conflict incidence and intensity. Our results show that imposing a nation-wide shutdown reduces the likelihood of daily conflict by around 9 percentage points. The reduction is driven by a drop in the incidence of battles, protests and violence against civilians. Across actors the …

Presence Of Dirofilaria Immitis In Mosquitoes In Southeastern Georgia, Angelica C. Tumminello May 2020

Presence Of Dirofilaria Immitis In Mosquitoes In Southeastern Georgia, Angelica C. Tumminello

Honors College Theses

Canine heartworm disease is caused by the filarial nematode Dirofilaria immitis, which is transmitted by at least 25 known species of mosquito vectors. This study sought to understand which species of mosquitoes are present in Bulloch County, Georgia, and which species are transmitting canine heartworm disease. This study also investigated whether particular canine demographics correlated with a greater risk of heartworm disease. Surveillance of mosquitoes was conducted in known heartworm-positive canine locations using traditional gravid trapping and vacuum sampling. Mosquito samples were frozen until deemed inactive, then identified by species and sex. The mosquitoes were then either dissected under …

Symposium: Pandemics And The Constitution: Positive Constitutionalism In A Pandemic: Demanding Responsibility From The Trump Administration, Ruthann Robson May 2020

Symposium: Pandemics And The Constitution: Positive Constitutionalism In A Pandemic: Demanding Responsibility From The Trump Administration, Ruthann Robson

ConLawNOW

We have become accustomed to conceiving of our constitutional rights as affording protection only against government infringement, but not as granting us any positive rights to claim government protection or action. The circumstances surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic should make us question this reflexive resort to negative constitutionalism. The numerous failures of the present federal Administration to ameliorate and address the pandemic are startling. Even under current doctrinal limits of negative rights, the Administration’s failures should give rise to individual constitutional claims. Most importantly, we should reorient our constitutional frameworks, theories, and doctrines toward recognition of positive rights to health and …

Symposium: Pandemics And The Constitution: Why The Special Needs Doctrine Is The Most Appropriate Fourth Amendment Theory For Justifying Police Stops To Enforce Covid-19 Stay-At-Home Orders, Henry F. Fradella May 2020

Symposium: Pandemics And The Constitution: Why The Special Needs Doctrine Is The Most Appropriate Fourth Amendment Theory For Justifying Police Stops To Enforce Covid-19 Stay-At-Home Orders, Henry F. Fradella

ConLawNOW

Despite the fact that the steps the federal and state governments take to curtail the spread of the viral infection are presumably taken in the best interest of public health, governmental actions and actors must comply with the U.S. Constitution even during a pandemic. Some public health measures, such as stay-at-home orders, restrict the exercise of personal freedoms ranging from the rights to travel and freely associate to the ability to gather in places of worship for religious services. This Essay explores several completing doctrines that might justify the authority of law enforcement to stop people who are out of …

Numerical Simulation To The Fitzhugh-Nagumo Model With Strong Reaction, Hongsong Feng May 2020

Numerical Simulation To The Fitzhugh-Nagumo Model With Strong Reaction, Hongsong Feng

Theses and Dissertations

The Fitzhugh-Nagumo model is a mathematical model derived from the simulation of propagating pulses in multicellular organisms. Since its creation, this model has drawn great attentions from academics and industry. To better understand the properties underlying this system, suitable numerical methods are needed to study it. In this thesis, numerical methods including the finite difference method, the finite element method, and the least-squares finite element method are applied to approximate its traveling wave solutions. In particular, since the FitzHugh-Nagumo model with strong reaction has a significant role in application, appropriate numerical scheme is designed to study it. Consistency and stability …

The Sir Models, Their Applications, And Approximations Of Their Rates, Christopher Cano

Mathematics Senior Capstone Papers

The SIR (Susceptible-Infected-Recovered) models are used to help predict the spread of diseases. The goals of this paper are: elaborating on the methods of approximating the recovery rate, infection rate, and loss of immunity rate, comparing the SIR models with these approximation methods to real world data, and determining the most accurate combination of the approximation methods for each SIR model. There are several SIR models such as the Kermack-McKendrick, SIRS, and SI models that are designed for specific diseases. Understanding the parameters of these models will assist us in maximizing their accuracy. For example, there is no explicit formula …

The Effects Of Therapeutic Back Massage On Psychophysiologic Variables And Immune Function In Spouses Of Cancer Patients, Linda M. Goodfellow-Kruth

Dissertations

Scant attention has been given to help spouses of cancer patients reduce stress associated with their partner's illness. Stress-induced immune function change may be the link between stress and illness. A significant decrease in natural killer cell activity (NKCA) and a high incidence of stress-related disorders, depression, loneliness, and marital disruption have been reported in spouses of cancer patients. Therapeutic back massage (TBM) is an intervention that may be beneficial in reducing stress in spouses of cancer patients. TBM is a systematic form of touch that manipulates soft tissues of the body to promote relaxation. Interventions that induce relaxation have …

Markov Chain Model For The Spread Of An Epidemic, Abigail Eleanor Bernhardt May 2020

Markov Chain Model For The Spread Of An Epidemic, Abigail Eleanor Bernhardt

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

In this project, I analyze a mathematical model for the spread of an epidemic using techniques from statistics, probability, and differential equations to track and test the severity of an epidemic. I focus on chlamydia and use 2018 data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention which includes prevalence in all genders and ages within the United States. I manipulated MATLAB code for the analysis. The results are examined to understand the stochastic processes which capture the epidemic model. With this understanding, we can map the disease and raise awareness in the populations that are prone to infection, in …

The T, T*, Vi, Vni Model For Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 (Hiv-1) Dynamics, Amy Creel

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

In this research project, I investigated deterministic and stochastic versions of a model for Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 (HIV-1) dynamics. First, an analytical solution to a simplified version of the deterministic model is found. Then, numerical techniques are used to obtain an approximate solution to the deterministic model. Finally, a stochastic version of the model is discussed, and numerical methods are used to find an approximate solution to the stochastic system. These results demonstrate the behavior of HIV-1 in an infected patient under the effects of reverse transcriptase and protease inhibitors, and illustrate how the addition of randomness to …

The gap in practice was the excessive movement through the sub-sterile doors of the operating room. The Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses Guidelines for perioperative practice (2018) was used to guide the project aim; limiting personnel and equipment; patient and large equipment, and door openings at the appropriate times. The PICOT question was as follows: In orthopedic operating rooms' personnel, how does implementing an OR traffic protocol compared to current practice, affect OR traffic and surgical infection rates (SIRs) in a 10-week timeframe?

The Bioethical Implications Of Genetic Screening Programs For Rare Diseases, Ellie Pitcher, Jeremy Mccallum May 2020

The Bioethical Implications Of Genetic Screening Programs For Rare Diseases, Ellie Pitcher, Jeremy Mccallum

Honors Thesis

In the United States, there are currently thirty-five hereditary medical disorders that the Department of Health and Human Services recommends for newborn screening. The early diagnosis of these disorders is critical to the health and well-being of affected individuals. There are many more rare genetic diseases that would benefit from early diagnosis, but which do not symptomatically present until late in life or have low penetrance. Some of these genetic diseases are extremely dangerous, and would massively benefit from the early diagnosis that accompanies newborn screening in the United States. Here the benefits and risks associated with early screening for …

Forgiveness, Freedom And The Inmate Issue, Taylor Smith

Master of Arts in Professional Writing Capstones

Forgiveness Freedom and the Inmate Issue:

It is no secret that the United States has a mass incarceration problem. The war on drugs, traffic violations, and the Three Strikes Law, are just pieces of the systems being used to repeatedly place people behind bars. What we are facing now as a society is the repercussions of reintegrating under educated, digitally literate, mentally abandoned individuals back into society. In addition to post jail operatives like parole fees, fines and probation scheduling are re-sentencing these individuals into a society they no longer relate to, that socially struggle to adapt to and that …
