This study proposes a minimal modeling magnetic, angular rate and gravity (MARG) methodology for assessing spatiotemporal and kinematic measures of functional fitness exercises. Thirteen healthy persons performed repetitions of the squat, box squat, sandbag pickup, shuffle-walk, and bear crawl. Sagittal plane hip, knee, and ankle range of motion (ROM) and stride length, stride time, and stance time measures were compared for the MARG method and an optical motion capture (OMC) system. The root mean square error (RMSE), mean absolute percentage error (MAPE), and Bland–Altman plots and limits of agreement were used to assess agreement between methods. Hip and knee ROM …

Purpose
Heightened COVID-19 mortality among Black non-Hispanic and Hispanic communities (relative to white non-Hispanic) is well established. This study aims to estimate the relative contributions to fatality disparities in terms of differences in SARS-CoV-2 infections, diagnoses, and disease severity.
Methods
We constructed COVID-19 outcome continua (similar to the HIV care continuum) for white non-Hispanic, Black non-Hispanic, and Hispanic adults in New York State. For each stage in the COVID-19 outcome continua (population, infection experience, diagnosis, hospitalization, fatality), we synthesized the most recent publicly available data. We described each continuum using overall percentages, fatality rates, and relative changes between stages, with …

This is an open access article published under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License. Angiogenesis is essential for cardiac functional recovery after myocardial infarction (MI). HSPA12B is predominately expressed in endothelial cells and required for angiogenesis. Yes-associated protein (YAP) plays an important role in tumor angiogenesis. This study investigated the cooperative role of HSPA12B and YAP in angiogenesis after MI. Silencing of either HSPA12B or YAP impaired hypoxia-promoted endothelial cell proliferation and angiogenesis. Deficiency of HSPA12B suppressed YAP expression and nuclear translocation after hypoxia. Knockdown of YAP attenuated hypoxia-stimulated HSPA12B nuclear translocation and abrogated HSPA12B-promoted endothelial …

Preterm birth is the leading cause of mortality in children under the age of five worldwide. Despite major efforts, we still lack the ability to accurately predict and effectively prevent preterm birth. While multiple factors contribute to preterm labor, dysregulations of immunological adaptations required for the maintenance of a healthy pregnancy is at its pathophysiological core. Consequently, a precise understanding of these chronologically paced immune adaptations and of the biological pacemakers that synchronize the pregnancy “immune clock” is a critical first step towards identifying deviations that are hallmarks of peterm birth. Here, we will review key elements of the fetal, …

The definition of resilience is the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties. Synonyms include toughness, perseverance and grit. Last spring’s severe weather events and this year’s ongoing COVID-19 pandemic are likely testing the resilience of rural Nebraskans. Given that, how do rural Nebraskans rate their communities on dimensions that measure their resiliency? How confident are they that the federal government or local emergency management authorities can contain infectious disease outbreaks? How do they rate their ability to help their community handle adversities? How prepared are rural Nebraskans to deal with financial emergencies? This paper provides a detailed analysis of these …

Vitamin C As An Adjunct Therapy In Sepsis Management, Nicholas Becker
Vitamin C As An Adjunct Therapy In Sepsis Management, Nicholas Becker
Theses and Graduate Projects
In the United States, sepsis afflicts nearly one in three ICU patients, is associated with monumental healthcare costs, and is among the leading causes of death. The burden of sepsis is felt globally, and efforts are underway to discover an effective adjunctive therapy. Vitamin C is a novel treatment showing promising early evidence. Additionally, vitamin C's use in combination therapy with hydrocortisone and thiamine has been postulated. These components are thought to work congruently to attenuate the pathophysiologic process of sepsis.
To answer whether vitamin C improves septic patient outcomes, a variety of methods were used to obtain information. Primarily, …
Combating Bacterial Infections With In-Situ Detection And Antibiotic Technology, Paul James Renick
Combating Bacterial Infections With In-Situ Detection And Antibiotic Technology, Paul James Renick
Biology Dissertations - Archive
Currently, there is a looming crisis in the field of antibacterial drug therapy. The emergence of antibacterial drug resistance because of poor antibacterial stewardship, coupled with booming elderly populations, economic disparity and climate change leading to societal instability is undoing the successes of the 20th century in combating infectious disease. New approaches and methods are needed to reverse these trends. My dissertation focuses on three key areas: (1) develop a better understanding of device-related biofilm infections, (2) the use of a bacterial specific D-glutamine positron emission tomography tracer for the direct visualization of infection, and (3) the development of an …

Learning Dynamics From Large Biological Data Sets: Machine Learning Meets Systems Biology, William Gilpin, Yitong Huang, Daniel B. Forger
Mathematics Sciences: Faculty Publications
In the past few decades, mathematical models based on dynamical systems theory have provided new insight into diverse biological systems. In this review, we ask whether the recent success of machine learning techniques for large-scale biological data analysis provides a complementary or competing approach to more traditional modeling approaches. Recent applications of machine learning to the problem of learning biological dynamics in diverse systems range from neuroscience to animal behavior. We compare the underlying mechanisms and limitations of traditional dynamical models with those of machine learning models. We highlight the unique role that traditional modeling has played in providing predictive …

A Novel Correction For The Adjusted Box-Pierce Test — New Risk Factors For Emergency Department Return Visits Within 72 Hours For Children With Respiratory Conditions — General Pediatric Model For Understanding And Predicting Prolonged Length Of Stay, Sidy Danioko
Computational and Data Sciences (PhD) Dissertations
This thesis represents the results of three research projects that underline the breadth and depth of my interests.
Firstly, I devoted some efforts to the well-known Box-Pierce goodness-of-fit tests for time series models which has been an important research topic over the last few decades. All previously proposed tests are focused on changes of the test statistics. Instead, I adopted a different approach that takes the best performing test and modifying the rejection region. Thus, I developed a semiparametric correction of the Adjusted Box-Pierce test that attains the best I error rates for all sample sizes and lags and outperforms …

Additionally, there is a culture of stigma in the United States towards those with mental health conditions and violent criminal history, contributing to mass incarceration. The present cross-sectional study sought to assess the association between violent criminal history and mental health symptoms among recently incarcerated homeless adults in Dallas, Texas. This study included 230 participants, taking place at The Bridge Homeless Recovery Center, evaluating non-violent versus violent criminal history. Outcome measures of positive screens for post-traumatic stress disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, and depression …
Likelihood Inference For Flexible Cure Rate Models In The Context Of Infectious Diseases With Multiple Exposures, Zachry Joseph Engel
Likelihood Inference For Flexible Cure Rate Models In The Context Of Infectious Diseases With Multiple Exposures, Zachry Joseph Engel
Mathematics Dissertations - Archive
Cure rate models are mostly used to study data arising from cancer clinical trials. Its use in the context of infectious diseases has not been explored well. In 2007, Tournoud and Ecochard rst proposed a mechanistic formulation of cure rate model in the context of infectious diseases with multiple exposures to infection. However, they assumed a simple Poisson distribution to capture the unobserved number of pathogens at each exposure time. In this thesis, we propose a new exible cure rate model to study infectious diseases with discrete multiple exposures to infection. This new model uses the Conway-Maxwell Poisson (COM-Poisson) distribution …

Mathematical Modeling, Analysis, And Simulation Of Cholera Dynamics, Chayu Yang
Mathematical Modeling, Analysis, And Simulation Of Cholera Dynamics, Chayu Yang
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
We propose multiple models to investigate the transmission dynamics of cholera. At first, we consider the intrinsic growth of cholera bacteria in cholera transmission and find that the regular threshold dynamics take place if the intrinsic growth is logistic; there are multiple endemic equilibria if the growth exhibits Allee effects, which may lead to backward bifurcation and forward hysteresis. In addition, we introduce a multi-scale modeling framework. At the population level, a Susceptible-Infected-Recovered (SIR) model for the between-host transmission of cholera is employed. At the individual host level, the evolution of the pathogen within the human body is incorporated. The …
